In today's podcast, Gregory chats about spiritual bypass.  What do we do when we touch down on a something largely distressing in our meditation practice, but we don't address it head on?  Perhaps we tiptoe around it, like a sleeping dragon.  Maybe we even deny that something needs to be worked on, or because it doesn't come up for a while, we believe we've healed it, only to find it was sleeping and awakens later.  Spiritual bypass is a tricky and very common occurrence - tune in to today's episode where Gregory gives examples of what to look for, and how to address the sleeping dragons head-on.

Buddhagosa outlined three different personality types based each on craving, aversion, and delusion. It's more involved than taking a fun personality quiz to find out (although that does exist- see below!) While different selves arise at different times, this can be helpful way of discerning and reflecting on how you operate in the world - how you work, your eating habits, how you walk, your posture... even how you make your bed. Find out about your Buddhist personality type and how it applies to creating more wise and positive life choices in this week's talk.

What does freedom and intentionality have to do with your practice?

In American culture, freedom is often defined by going with the flow – full spontaneity, no calendars, no rules, no goals.  In Buddhism, going with the flow has a very different flavor.  Perhaps one should consider going against the flow?  From Gil Fronsdal’s essay, Skillful Ways to Evaluate Your Practice - “Our practice flourishes when we have intentionality.”  Tune in to this week’s episode as Gregory chats intentionality and our concepts of freedom, and how that applies to your spiritual practice.

Meditation Teacher, Nonprofit founder, and published author Caverly Morgan joins Gregory in studio to chat mindfulness, activism, spirituality and her new book, The Heart of Who We Are: Realizing Freedom Together.

When Caverly Morgan reentered society after eight years as a Zen monk, she was confronted with a question many of us are asking these days: When faced with the enormity of the collective problems before us, how can one individual’s spiritual practice make a tangible difference in our world?

Check out Caverly's new book and this engaging episode of Wednesday Wake-Up!

You can learn more about Caverly through her website. Follow her on Facebook and Instagram.

This week we explore the challenging subject of judging our success as meditators. How do we really know that we are gaining wisdom? How can we be certain that we are not only heading in the right direction but are gaining the necessary skills to reach our spiritual goals? We explore how 'progress' works in the Dharma, what signs to look for as you mature in practice and what specific changes you can look for as markers of success.    ABOUT HOST GREGORY MALOOF

This week we explore why a commitment to non-violence is the bedrock of the Buddha's teachings. We use stories from the ancient Pali suttas to shed light on exactly how the Buddha describes non-violence and the origins of non-violence in the ancient Indian concept of 'Ahimsa'. We also explore the Buddha's understanding of the limits of non-violence in householder life.    ABOUT HOST GREGORY MALOOF

Why is it that mindfulness practice and spiritual development can be so challenging? What is it about the human heart-mind that makes giving up harmful habits so difficult. Why is it that we struggle to let go of unhealthy relationships and harmful ways of being even when we know they are not good for us? This week we explore the foundational nature of human behavior in order to gain the wisdom necessary to begin our journey out of suffering and into the light of awakening.

When the Buddha reflected on his awakening, he recalled the ability to use mindfulness to notice when his thinking was imbued with sensuality, ill-will, anger, hatred, and cruelty.  Conversely, he was able to discern when his thoughts were imbued with the heart-mind qualities of letting go, good will and harmlessness. In this episode, we explore the positive and negative impacts of our inner dialogue and 3 meditation practices to decrease negative self-talk and increase loving self-reflection.

This week we discuss the incredible creative power of the heart-mind to bring together the raw material of the present moment in order to give us a sense of self, a sense of the world, and the feeling of becoming. The Buddha refers to this creative act as fabrication or Sankhara. One of the primary goals of insight meditation is to gain a deeper understanding of this creative process so we can un-fabricate suffering and fabricate a sense of ease and well-being in our lives. In this episode we explore why this concept of Sankhara is so important and how we can use the heart-mind qualities of Mindfulness, Equanimity and Investigation to establish the foundation for freedom in our lives.

This week we explore one of the most important distinctions between these two practices- what is the balance between Engagement and Equanimity? How do we know when to bring a calm, equanimous, non-reactive mind to the present moment versus a mind that curiously engages present moment reality to gain deeper wisdom? Understanding how to approach these two heart-mind qualities is one of the keys to deeper meditation practice.

In this episode we look at the political, environmental, and societal upheaval that took place in the United States and around the world in relationship to the Buddha’s invitation to use the stress in our lives as a gateway to freedom. In this talk we clarify what the Buddha really meant by the ‘acceptance’ of suffering and how the universality of the fickleness and unpredictable nature of our world must first be honored before it can be used as a vehicle for transcendence.

Without a clear understanding of how meditation works it is very easy to get side tracked or lost in our practice. When this happens meditation can quickly become routine, boring and dare we say, mindless. In this week’s talk we discuss how to keep your practice on track by gaining a deeper understanding of what skills you are developing, how healing and growth takes place in meditation and how heart/mind qualities are awakened during practice.  This talk includes a special guided body scan meditation and instructions on how to engage in Metta with full-body awareness.

Today we conclude our 4-part series exploring how we can access the interconnectedness of the past, present and future to free ourselves from stress and suffering while planting seeds of joy and awakening. In this episode we specifically explore the myth and drawbacks of the stereotypical ‘going with the flow’ framework and discuss ways to harness the power of intention, wakefulness, aspiration and fabrication to open the future to the grand possibility of our own imagining.

This is the first part of a four-part series on the power of presence. In this talk we reviewed the various ways that mindfulness can be used to enter the present moment as a dynamic way of changing our relationship with both the past and future. By understanding intimately how the past conditions our present experience and how the present is connected to our future, we are able to heal from deep wounds while simultaneously planting seeds of an awakened life filled with joy, wisdom and compassion.

We are living through an unprecedented time of loss. Loss of jobs, loss of health, loss of connection and belonging, loss of confidence and loss of trust just to name a few.  It is an ideal time for deep self-reflection and much needed self-compassion. This week we explored the power of honoring the First Noble Truth and the inevitability of impermanence as opportunities to lessen suffering and live with authenticity and grace.

This guided meditation was made collectively by the Wednesday Wake-Up group that met 3/11/20.  Participants were asked to offer a loving-kindness phrase for themselves and the world.  Phrases were written on flash cards then read as the guided metta meditation for the group.  (Reading done by Dharma Teacher Gregory Maloof)
