Emotional flooding is a common experience for HSPs and neurodivergents. As it sounds, we can become flooded with challenging feelings and emotions which trigger immense discomfort. This can occur not only in “expected” stressful situations, but also “everyday” situations which may not at all feel uncomfortable for the non-HSP.

In this episode, I speak about:

  • What emotional flooding is, how it occurs and how to identify it
  • The impacts of emotional suppression
  • Seeking psychological safety for healthy emotional expression
  • How to plan for aftercare of emotional flooding

In today's episode, I speak to "the productivity myth" and how deeply we can attach our self-worth to our ability to produce and create. Not only is this unhelpful (and a myth!!) but it may be part of the reason why you experience ongoing, recurring or frequent exhaustion.

I get a little vulnerable and share my challenge with productivity, self-worth and chronic fatigue along with an incredibly simple yet effective strategy to better manage by energy through a system called "energy pacing." If you would like to practice this strategy yourself, download my FREE worksheets HERE to get you started.

Exciting news... I have something really fun coming up this year that I've never done before (crafted especially for the HSP), and would love to invite you to be part of it! We're already mid-January into 2023, and I know that there can be a lot of pressure to have our plans and intentions for the year all sorted and under way! This pressure is a strain to the highly sensitive nervous system.. which is why I created my own 8-Step Sparkle Formula, based on evidence-based science and intuition to create plans and intentions that suit my energy levels as an HSP!

In this solo episode, I share with you my 8-Step Sparkle Formula for you to design your own meaningful and energetically sustainable year that lights you up (grab a pen and paper so that you can take notes)!

This week I had the pleasure of diving into the topic of The Mother Wound with New York-based writer, creative consultant, and trauma-informed relationship coach- Julie Nguyen. Julie so beautifully explains the complexity of The Mother Wound and how it shows up in our personal relationships. We explore...

  • The connection between The Mother Wound and female oppression
  • Adaptive survival strategies that we may develop as a result of The Mother Wound
  • The connection between our Mother Wound and attachment styles
  • How to begin to address and heal our own personal Mother Wound and in turn, address our relationship with ourselves and loved ones
  • A fascinating dating experiment that Julie was involved in creating called The Long Second Date
  • What the path of healing means to Julie

Let's talk survival mode, the impact it has on our daily lives and how we can restore a sense of safety through nurturing the nervous system (my favourite topic)! Many HSPs often feel as though they are chronically and/or easily exhausted; in this guest episode with holistic counsellor and somatic coach Dvonne Loring, she explains how this often partly arises from being in a chronic state of survival mode.

Dvonne shares her wisdom around:

  • What is “survival mode” including signs we may be in the midst of it, and how it affect our day to day lives?
  • The types of people more likely to find themselves "stuck" in survival mode and how it shows up through behaviours such as perfectionism and people-pleasing
  • Examples of what lack of safety might mean and how we can restore a sense of safety
  • Key practices to support the healing journey
  • Dvonne's unique framework to support women to embody their authenticity

Are you a city dweller that has a dream of packing up and leaving it all in search of a slower pace of living in the country? I certainly felt this way living in Melbourne; life had become a bit too rushed, busy and overwhelming (which was not great for my high sensitivity)! During this time, I came across the work of non-fiction creative writer Lucy Anna Scott who beautifully reframed the joy of urban living in her book Mindful Thoughts for City Dwellers, and how we in fact can cultivate more mindfulness and connect with nature in the city.

Lucy’s writing has been featured in BBC, The Times, The Guardian, The Mail on Sunday, Metro and The National, and she also co-created Lost in London, an indie magazine which explores and celebrates nature in the city. In this episode, Lucy speaks about:

  • What it means to be an HSP in the city
  • The inspiration behind Mindful Thoughts for City Dwellers
  • Why we often romanticise the idea of escaping the city for country living
  • Ways we can cultivate greater mindfulness and connect with nature in the city
  • How we can enhance our sense of community and belonging in the city

In this episode, I sat with Brisbane-based clinical psychologist Shannon Swales to have a deep conversation about her breakdown as a result of burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma, which then led to taking a year off (aka "gap year") to focus on her recovery and healing. Through this journey, she found that blogging, podcasting and being open in sharing her experience to be a therapeutic process.

Shannon describes herself as "a person who never knew what she wanted in a career and only started studying psychology in her early 20s because she wanted to understand why people behaved the way they do; little did she know that it would send her on her pathway to discover herself..."

Welcome BACK for Season 3 of The Gentle Living Podcast! After a longer than expected break from podcasting, I’m excited to bring you a wonderful guest episode to kick off the season with Rebekkah LaDyne (M.S., SEP). Rebekkah is a somatic therapist, self-regulation specialist and author of The Mind-Body Stress Reset, which Rebekkah describes as a guide to self-administered first aid for stress.

In this episode, Rebekkah so generously shares her knowledge and wisdom, discussing:

  • Her personal story on uncovering somatic memories and traumatic imprints and shifting from a baseline or “norm” of stress, anxiety and overwhelm through discovering somatic therapy and connecting with her physical body, “relearning” patterns of the nervous system and self-soothing
  • Why understanding nervous system dysregulation and is not enough to overcome chronic anxiety and how the practice of somatic therapy can support the highly sensitive person (HSP) to feel safe and soothed in oneself
  • The premise of somatic therapy as a modality to restore a sense of safety in the physical body
  • The impact of somatic imprints formed in childhood and how they can affect us in the present day to feel anxious or unsafe
  • The function of shame as a behaviour modifier, how it affects the inner child and how to disrupt the ongoing shame cycle
  • Embracing the trait of high sensitivity
  • Practical tools within Rebekkah’s Mind-Body-Stress reset framework

Getting really honest with yourself; what is your relationship with social media like? Is it uplifting and supportive or is it draining and damaging? We can often over-emphasise the benefits we obtain from social media and dismiss or disregard its consequences on our mental wellbeing.

In this episode I get honest about my relationship with social media and why I've decided to take a break from it until at least January 2022, what this means for my business and for me personally! I also share why social media can sometimes become overwhelming and particularly exhausting for the highly sensitive person (HSP).

Hello and welcome back for another solo episode! We're almost in summer here in Australia and about halfway through this episode the cicadas in my garden (who are most active in the hot summer months) decided to chime in, so I hope you'll enjoy their ambience!

In this episode, I speak about the concept of compassion fatigue (what happens when caring becomes exhausting). This is an especially important topic for the highly sensitive person (HSP), because as an HSP you have the gift of deep empathy. Yet, at some point it is likely that this has been taken advantage of by others and over time, becomes energetically depleting.

Find out about the signs of compassion fatigue in yourself so that you can aim to prevent and/or manage it whilst also taking care of yourself!

Imbalanced hormones are often a product of our environment and the stressors we face in modern-day living. This imbalance can lead to common issues such as digestive issues, brain fog, low energy and fatigue. However, by addressing the root cause of these imbalances, we can restore and improve our hormonal health! This week, I speak with board certified integrative and functional nutritionist Erin Holt on all things hormonal health!

Erin explains:

  • What functional nutrition is
  • How her work evolved from her personal experience and through supporting women who may have had their health issues as being dismissed as "normal"
  • The fear and shame that women can experience around their bodies
  • Hormones role in stress and which key hormones are involved
  • Key tests to uncover hormonal imbalances
  • The relationship between gut health and stress
  • The importance of boundaries in supporting wellbeing

Welcome back for a solo episode this week! Nervous system regulation and balance have been central to my healing journey and enabling me to flourish as a highly sensitive person (HSP), and are also fundamental to the work that I do today.

I wanted to share with you some simple and accessible tools that are part of my nervous system balancing "toolkit" to inspire you to try out some new practices and create your own toolkit! In this episode I explore:

  • Top-down vs. bottom-up approaches to healing
  • Why nervous system regulation is so important for the HSP
  • How an imbalanced nervous system often manifests through physical ailments and mental distress
  • Practices/tools that I implement to balance my nervous system
  • Ideas for you to explore and experiment with for your own healing

Common struggles of the highly sensitive person (HSP) are understanding how they can tap into their unique gifts whilst sustainably managing their energy. Human Design can help the HSP with these struggles and facilitate growth! It is a deeply insightful spiritual tool which combines the chakra system, kabbalah tree of life and astrology. Sound too "woo"? Keep an open mind, you may be surprised how accurate Human Design is!

This week, I am SO excited to bring you a fun and uplifting conversation with the beautiful Rachel Onojafe; a cosmic coach and fellow highly sensitive empath who has a gift of unpacking and explaining Human Design in a relatable, practical way within the HSP context (I was astounded by her insights)! In this episode, Rachel shares:

  • Her experience of intense stress and anxiety, and journey from overachieving people-pleaser to following her dreams and calling
  • How learning about astrology, working with the lunar cycles and Human Design facilitated her healing and growth
  • How Human Design can support you to enhance your relationship with yourself
  • The 5 Human Design types and their associated auric fields (what they mean!)
  • How you can balance and honour your energy according to your unique Human Design make-up and what this means for the HSP

For this episode, I recommend researching your Human Design type if you don't already know it. You can find out your type at either of the websites below for free:

Recently I've been having more conversations with people around what high sensitivity is and even more so, high sensitivity is not! It seems that the label of "sensitivity" certainly gets a bad rap, and although we may not explicitly endorse a perception that sensitivity is a "weakness," it can very well be an unconscious belief that we hold. These unconscious beliefs then shape our experience of not only the world around us, but our beliefs around who we should be! So if sensitivity is a weakness, why would we want to associate ourselves with high sensitivity!?

These conversations have reminded me that I too still hold negative unconscious beliefs around sensitivity which were developed in childhood. Yet, if I could go back, there are six key things that I'd like to tell my highly sensitive younger self. In sharing these things, I hope that they will also support you to identify any limiting beliefs that you hold around sensitivity.

Find out what these 6 things are in this episode!

It's no secret that we are often our own worst critics! The practice of self-compassion can transform that harsh and judgemental inner dialogue about ourselves into one which is more compassionate and understanding. This enables us to befriend ourselves through extending the same kindness to ourselves as what we would a dear friend or loved one. Self-compassion is not some "fluffy" ideal, but a practice grounded in evidence-based research which has the power to transform the way you relate to yourself and the world around you.

In this week's episode, I speak with Kate James about how to create a self-compassion practice and why this is especially important for the highly sensitive person (HSP). Kate is an author, coach and teacher of meditation, mindfulness and self-compassion. Kate explains:

Although there have been such wonderful advancements in science and healthcare, there remains a considerable gap between mind, body and spirit. We often focus on addressing or suppressing physical health issues and symptoms without considering the whole individual and their unique root causes.

In this episode, I speak with nutritionist, holistic health coach and fellow HSP Pavlina Jirouskova, to discuss how the highly sensitive person (HSP) is often more susceptible to chronic health issues and how to address these issues through a more holistic framework. We explore:

  • Pavlina’s story, the work she does in holding space for women with chronic health issues and her own eczema healing journey
  • Why the HSP often experiences chronic health issues (e.g. pain, menstrual problems, inflammatory, digestive issues)
  • Learning to slow down and listen to the body to understand what our physical symptoms are communicating to us
  • How inherited/ancestral patterns may draw our attention to unresolved issues that require healing
  • The mind-body-spirit connection and why it’s important to address all components on the healing path
  • Simple and practical strategies for individuals experiencing chronic health symptoms

The highly sensitive person (HSP) experiences emotions deeply and can often fall harder in love than the non-HSP! This doesn't always mean we're quick or transparent in sharing our honest feelings though! Sometimes navigating the world of dating and relationships can become an overwhelming minefield for the HSP.. but it need not be if you can understand how high sensitivity and intimate relationships intersect.

In Episode 26 released today, learn more about how to navigate the world of dating and relationships with less overwhelm! Join me as I explore:

  • The key lessons I've learnt in navigating dating & relationships as an HSP
  • How your attachment style can impact how you show up in relationships (avoidance vs. co-dependency)
  • Identifying and communicating your HSP needs
  • Cultivating courage and vulnerability to share your authentic self
  • Making sense of your unique "love language" in the context of high sensitivity

It can be challenging for the HSP to identify their needs and assert boundaries; quite often the HSP will ignore or suppress their own needs which leads to overwhelm and exhaustion! Having a conscious awareness of your needs can support you to create loving boundaries that enable you to be more present for what's important.

In this solo episode I explore...

  • Why having an awareness of your needs can allow you to create loving boundaries
  • Why the HSP can often dismiss or suppress their needs and how this shows up
  • Boundaries are not "walls" to keep others out, but foundations to enable a sense of safety and stability
  • How to communicate your needs and boundaries
  • How I assert my boundaries and needs in four key areas; physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual (and how you can too!)

We all know that sleep is important and essential to our functioning, but the reality is that we often neglect it or take it for granted. As highly sensitives, we are particularly sensitive to the effects of poor quality sleep and sleep deprivation thus it is especially important that we take it more seriously and ensure it is TRULY restorative!

This week I speak with holistic health coach Victoria Massey to explore HOW we can prioritise and implement healthier sleep habits and routines that truly nourish and support our wellbeing! Victoria explains:

  • WHY sleep is paramount to wellbeing (and often a missing/overlooked part of our health)
  • How we can implement better sleep habits whilst navigating modern-day living
  • What healthy sleep actually looks like (I share a bit about how sleep was problematic for me during my hospital nursing days)
  • Practical tips on how to create a nourishing sleep routine (hint: it begins well before bedtime!)

  • Why intuition doesn't always make sense but is deeply affirming

We've seen a "boom" in positivity across social media; from the power of positive thinking, to positive affirmations to shift negative states of being.
