In this episode, Dan & Ian are giving you a simple explanation of how to report your gambling activities for your 2021 tax return.
COMPLIANCE STATEMENT: Any income is taxable, not just money that is reported on your W-2G. All income is taxable unless exempt by Congress, even if you make $1. This video is strictly for entertainment purposes. This is not financial advice or recommendations.
Step 1: Receive Your W-2G statement
----Generally, you'll receive an IRS Form W-2G if your gambling winnings are at least $600 and the payout is at least 300 times the amount of your wager. If not, it is up to the individual to self-report their winnings and loses.
Step 2: How to Report Them (Federal)
-----Gambling losses are allowed to be deducted up to the amount won. There is no deduction received even if your losses far outpace your winnings (you cannot receive the additional deduction or carry forward that amount to subsequent years)
----You may deduct gambling losses only if you itemize your deductions
----You can only take this deduction if you keep detailed records based on your gambling sessions. ----Gambling is a high priority during personal audits. (i.e receipts, tickets, statements, or other records that have winnings and losses)
----Claim your gambling losses up to the amount of winnings as Other Itemized Deductions
Step 3: How to Report Them (State)
----IMPORTANT PA NOTE: Gambling winnings are fully taxable by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. State residents must pay state income tax on all gambling and lottery winnings from any source, except for non-cash prizes from playing the Pennsylvania State Lottery. As a resident, you must include lottery winnings from other states and countries.
----No, expenses attributable to gambling and lottery income are deductible, such as: parking, postage, entry fees, meals and lodging or travel.
----You can offset your winnings with losses up to the amount of winnings in PA

In the return of short form episodes, Dan & Ian give you a guide to purchasing NFTs.
Step 1: Purchase Ethereum
Step 2: Set up an ERC compatible crypto wallet. We suggest using MetaMask, it is the best and most popular option
Step 3: Secure your Seed Phrase. A seed phrase is a unique set of 12 words. This is unique to you and you should never share it. Store your seed phrase somewhere securely.
Step 4: Copy your Ethereum address from your Metamask account. It will begin with a 0x and be followed by 40 characters. Send Your ETH from Coinbase to Metamask.
Step 5: From Metamask browse to opensea.io or other NFT marketplaces to connect your wallet and purchase.
Words of Caution: Only buy with money you can afford to lose, spend hours educating yourself and be aware there are a lot of bad projects. Spend time in discords learning about the project and their build strong communities.

Welcome back to another week of the Small Business Experience podcast! Today, inspired by some personal events, we have decided to dive into the growing prevalence of monitoring by employers. We had an exploratory conversation about the effects, motives and implications of this monitoring. Where do we feel like this monitoring crosses the line? Where do we feel like it has its place? Please feel free to engage, as always, this is meant to be an introduction to a conversation.

In this episode, Dan & Ian dive into a hot topic. Do employers have the inherent right to dictate employee appearance? Where is the line between business decisions and discrimination? These are intense and deep moral discussions that need their time to work-through. This video is not meant to express our opinions, but rather to create & facilitate meaningful conversation. Discrimination in any capacity is completely inappropriate and destroys an environment safe for all. We hope you have gained some insight into important topics and we hope this will be continued to be talked about. It starts with acceptance and ends with respect.

In this episode, Dan & Ian breakdown ETFs and mutual funds. This broad diversification approach to investing allows for people to obtain dollar-cost averaging objectives. ETFs and mutual funds have many similarities, but we illuminate the differences and bring to light our opinions on these investment vehicles. Investing is a tricky game; however, understanding your goals and objectives can be a linchpin in your investing profile.
We do not believe that this type of passive investment techniques replaces speaking to a financial professional. Financial advisors create personalized plans and understand the full person behind the finances.

In this episode, Dan & Ian bring to light a new investing app, Grifin. Grifin is a passive investing app that allows you to buy stock in companies you shop at. Their tag line, "stock where you shop," refers to their methodology of investing $1 for every purchase. For example, when you make a purchase at Starbucks for $4.95, Grifin will automatically invest $1 into Starbucks stock. If you purchase an item from a company who is not publicly traded, it will still put that $1 into the Grifin app and you decide where it goes.
Grifin is an acronym that they claim stands for "greatest revolution in finance now." They have taken steps to change the way people invest. Dan & Ian breakdown this methodology and give their long-term look on the true application of this company.

In this episode, Dan & Ian breakdown the two different types of 401ks. They explain the differences and give their opinions for people based on their circumstances. They explore the psychology of money and stress surrounding financial literacy. Their goal is to bring financial knowledge and accessibility to all those who choose to listen. Thank you for being apart of this community.
Regular 401k Taxation:
-Lowers the amount of your taxable income by the amount that you contribute
-If you are in a high tax bracket this may be attractive, because it reduces your taxable income
-Pay the tax on the money contributed and the gains when the amounts are withdrawn
-Usually withdrawal will be during retirement so you will be in a lower tax bracket which will decrease the amount you are taxed on the money
Roth and Traditional 401ks have a contribution limit of $19,500 and you can add an extra $6,500 if over the age of 50 for "catch-up" contributions
-Any amounts withdrawn will be fully taxed and subject to 10% penalty (if it doesn't fit the few exceptions)
Roth 401k Taxation:
-Money goes into account is after tax dollars
-So your income is fully taxable and you are contributing with money that is all yours
-All withdrawals after age 59.5 are completely tax free (basis and gains)
-Also can withdraw your basis in the account at any time, since you already paid tax on it

In this episode, Dan & Ian breakdown the recent market phenomenon, SPACs. SPAC stands for special purpose acquisition company. These companies are referred to as "blank-check companies," in which they raise capital and attempt to execute a reverse merger. After a SPAC announces a target and signs a definitive agreement (DA) the original ticker symbol of the SPAC begins to trade under a new ticker symbol. For example: IPOB now trades under the symbol OPEN. Shareholders will vote on the DA and give their opinions on where they want the SPAC to go. Please continue to do your own due diligence and review management teams extensively prior to making any investments.

In this episode, Dan & Ian discuss a new social networking app. Clubhouse is gaining national media attention as the next social media channel to take over the atmosphere. Dan & Ian give their opinions on the platform and potential pitfalls they see in the platform. They offer a walk-through of the exclusive platform, Trojan Horse style.
Clubhouse is a social networking app that allows people to gather in audio chat rooms to discuss any topics they desire. The app was unveiled last spring by two tech industry veterans, Paul Davison and Rohan Seth. Clubhouse is an invite-only platform. Meaning you need to know someone who is already on the platform to provide you a link to join it. Invitations are going for between $30 and $20,000 on eBay. In this episode, Dan & Ian compare and contrast the two types of IRAs. Traditional IRAs provide pre-tax deductions, which lower your taxable income. When required minimum distributions begin at age 72, the money in your account will be taxed when distributed. In contrast, Roth IRAs are contributed to with after-tax dollars, meaning you already paid tax on your money. Since there are no RMDs for Roth IRAs, you may begin withdrawing the money in your account completely tax free after turning age 59.5. Dan & Ian begin exploring behavioral finance and the psychology of money, which leads to an interesting discussion about personal financial goals and outlooks.
Please be aware that the contribution limits for both Traditional and Roth IRAs are $6,000 per taxable year and $7,000 if you are over the age of 50. However, you begin to phase out of Roth IRA contributions when you make over $125,000 (single filer) and $198,000 (MFJ). Also, you completely phase-out of Roth IRA contributions when you make more than $140,000 (single filer) and $208,000 (MFJ).

In this episode, Dan & Ian discuss the process of self employed retirement plans. There are four options available for setting up retirement plans: SOLO 401k, SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA and Regular 401k. As a self employed individual you are still able to enroll in a Traditional IRA or Roth IRA; however, these self employed plans usually provide higher contribution limits and tax-advantaged savings.
Dan's top three questions for finding the right plan for you...
1. How much can I save? Create a budget
2. Do you have employees? Evaluate staff
3. Are you a participant or eligible for a retirement plan for another job? Side hustle or full-time
SOLO 401k (Individual 401k, One participant 401k): reserved for sole proprietorship, with no employers other than a spouse.
Employee contribution limits = $19,500, or $26,000 if age 50 or older.
Employee & Employer contribution limits = $58,000, or $64,000 for people age 50 or older as of 2021
SEP IRA: best for sole proprietor, gets expensive when you have employees
-The employer alone contributes to the fund, there is no annual funding requirement, but when you do contribute, you will need to do so for all of your eligible employees—up to 25% of their compensation, limited to $290,000 annually
Contribution limits = maximum of $58,000 in 2021.
SIMPLE IRA: (savings incentive match program for employees): best for mid-sized businesses, regular 401k with training wheels. Employees and employers can contribute to the plan
Contribution limits = $13,500 in 2021, plus an additional $3,000 if you are 50 or older.
With the SIMPLE IRA, you are 100% vested whenever the employer deposits that into your account. This is definitely a huge difference than the 401k
Regular 401k: the most popular retirement savings plan, typically used for larger businesses
CON: Filing fees, set up trust
CON: Form 5500 - annual filing requirement for 401k
PRO: Roth option, picking investments, salary deferrals,
PRO: Contribution limits much higher ($19,500 in salary deferrals) than SIMPLE IRA ($13,500) and catch up ($6500 for 401k vs $3000 for SIMPLE IRA)
Customized vesting schedule: EXAMPLE
After one year of service: 0% vested.
After two years of service: 20% vested.
After three years of service: 40% vested.
After four years of service: 60% vested.
After five years of service: 80%vested.
After six years of service: 100% vested.

In this episode, Dan & Ian help clarify the confusion surrounding Health Savings Accounts (HSA). Also, they dive deep into the requirements and contribution limits to the plan. Furthermore, they explore Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) which allow for another option of healthcare savings. Below there is an outline of the episode and further information regarding health savings.
KEY POINTS: Health savings accounts (HSAs)
-Are like personal savings accounts, but the money in them is used to pay for health care expenses. You — not your employer or insurance company — own and control the money in your HSA. The money you deposit into the account is not taxed.
-To be eligible, you must be enrolled in a High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). Contributions to HSAs generally aren't subject to federal income tax, and the earnings in the account grow tax-free.
-Contributions can come from you, your employer, a relative, or anyone else who wants to add to your HSA. The IRS does, however, set limits. In tax year 2020, for example, the limit is $3,550 for individuals and $7,100 for families, plus an additional $1,000 "catch-up" contribution for anyone age 55 or older by the end of the tax year.
KEY POINTS: Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
-Same thing as HSA, except you do not need to be part of HDHP
-Employee of an employer who sponsors the plan
-Can be used for additional medical expenses not covered or explicitly mentioned in HSAs
-Limited to $2,750 per yr per employer
-Spouse can contribute $2,750 to their own as well
-HSAs are more flexibility than Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), which can only be carried over in an amount up to $500 or 2.5 months into the following plan year

In this episode, Dan & Ian debate the most well-known retirement savings plan. 401k's are employer sponsored plans that allow you to contribute pre-tax dollars to a retirement plan. This plan is either actively or passively managed by your employer who chooses the investments for you. Since the money is deducted from your paycheck, it reduces your taxable income. Below is some additional information about 401ks.
2020 Contribution Limits
-19,500 for under the age of 50
-26,000 for those 50 and up
If your employer matches as well the max amount that can be put in is:
-58,000 for under age 50, or 100% of employee compensation whichever is lower
-64,500 for over the age of 50, or 100% of employee compensation whichever is lower
Option of Traditional or Roth 401K:
-Traditional allows you to reduce your taxable income now and therefore decrease the amount that you will owe in taxes: In traditional you pay all the tax on the back end
-Roth is contributed with after-tax dollars and then is not taxed on its withdrawal: In Roth you do not pay taxes on earnings or contributions when you withdrawal

This is important information for anyone with dependents, grandchildren, etc. Below will include a more detailed outline for the episode.
What is a 529? An investment account that offers tax-free earnings growth and tax-free withdrawals when the funds are used to pay for qualified education expenses.
Coverdell Education Savings Account (ESA), formally called "Education IRA" : A Coverdell education savings account is a tax-deferred trust account created by the U.S. government to assist families in funding educational expenses for beneficiaries who must be 18 years old or younger when the account is established. The age restriction may be waived for special needs beneficiaries. In this episode, Dan & Ian expand on the recent market volatility, driven by wallstreetbets and institutional investors. This episode details the investing platform, Robinhood, and their recent woes. Robinhood was created to “democratize investing for all” by allowing the regular person access to the financial markets. Unfortunately, Robinhood walked-back this statement by restricting access to certain securities on 1/27/2021. Robinhood disabled the buy button relating to GME, AMC & NOK due to the large volatility resulting from the popular Reddit forum, wallstreetbets. There are claims that Robinhood was influenced by hedge funds and clearing houses to restrict retail investors from using their money how they see fit. Robinhood could be facing class action lawsuits and potential SEC violations. We will continue to follow this situation as new information develops.

What is wallstreetbets? It is a forum on Reddit that has 7.5 million members
