According to the National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) 7-8% of the population is suffering from this malady. It is often ignored, misunderstood, and often attribute other reasons to the behavior of those with PTSD. For sure those men and women who are or were combat veterans, first responders, and Covid front line workers have the greatest potential to develop PTSD. The statistics for combat veterans that suffer from PTSD is between 11 -20% The fact is not everyone has it, and it looks different in each person who does have it. It surrounds us everyday, but we ignore it. People you work with, people you manage, people that live right next store can be suffering from it, but because of shame and embarrassment they keep it behind closed doors. It affects their job, their spouses, their children, and their friends and family. But thankfully on this episode of A New Direction Author Jen Satterly wife of Delta Force Command Sergeant Major Tom Satterly who suffers from PTSD after 20 years of deployment gives you insights and tactics to give you hope for those who deal with PTS...because it truly is not a disorder.

Jen Satterly's book entitled "Arsenal of Hope: Tactics for Taking on PTSD, Together" is a vulnerable look inside at what it is really like to live with someone who has PTSD. She also reveals as a coach to many veterans the journey, and the hard work it takes to make even a small step in recovery from PTSD. And yes people can and do recover. As Jen Satterly explains it is a biological problem from years of training to be an elite fighting machine, meant to protect others and rid the world of evil. "Arsenal of Hope" is powerfully insightful and filled with practical information to help those who have PTSD, and help them get help. Jen Satterly along with her husband Tom Satterly are co-founders of the All Secure Foundation which helps our veterans and first responders overcome their PTSD and find the right resources to help them live the thriving life after the military. There is so much written on company and corporate culture that it would be impossible to read it all in a life time. Most of what is written can be classified as "pop culture". We often get clever sayings like, "culture eats strategy for breakfast". But does it really? To start with what is culture when it comes to a company? Do we really understand it? We assume that we control it, but do we really? Is it made up of values? Who's values? Is it employee well being? What does that mean? Can we measure it's effect on business? Can we change it? How?

With all that has been written the truth is we have more questions than answers. What is more the whole field of culture lacks one important dynamic...an empirical scientific approach. That is why in this episode of A New Direction Cognitive Anthropologist Dr. David G. White enlightens us with his scientific insights about what culture really is and how it can be affected as well as the limitations.

Dr White's book Disrupting Corporate Culture is more of an academic book. It is not a lay person's read, but none-the-less it is an important read when it comes to understanding what culture is. Dr. White in this episode helps us break down the jargon, move from the academic view and helps us get a perspective of how we are thinking about culture in the wrong way, dispels the myths and gives us insight into how are brains create culture. So forget what you thought you knew about company culture, because the science of Disrupting Corporate Culture is about open your eyes as to what it really is and the difficulties in changing it.

We all will experience conflict, but how do we handle it? Are you a conflict avoider? Hoping the problem will go away. Maybe you are a conflict enforcer? Where you take control of situation and it is your way or the hi-way. Perhaps your a conflict manager? You just want to manage the conflict not really dealing with the issues in an attempt to smooth it over. There is a better way! And it is called "reconciliation". What does it take to get to reconciliation? Dangerous Love. In this episode of A New Direction Former ESPN NBA analyst and Conflict Specialist Chad Ford joins us again. We talk about why Dangerous Love is not a "Kumbaya" moment. Why Dangerous Love requires truth, mercy, and justice. We even go into specific situations where we ask how do you practice Dangerous Love in an abusive relationship.
Dangerous Love: Transforming Fear and Conflict at Home, at Work, and in the World is simply a great book into how we can best handle conflict. The fact is we have to take responsibility for our part of the conflict. We can easily be self-deceived into believing it is the other person's fault. And we neglect to look at how we may have contributed to the problem. Dangerous Love makes us take a close examination of ourselves, remove the emotions, and take action and make the first step toward being reconciled. Great Book!
Thanks to our sponsors we are able to bring such great guests as Chad Ford on A New Direction. Please go to their Facebook and Instagram pages give them a LIKE or a FOLLOW just to say thank you!

There was a time when men and women had specific roles in their relationship. Typically the man worked at his job, and the wife stayed at home. While that seems archaic by today's standards the fact of the matter was it actually made the relationship much easier and steadier because everyone knew their role, and as we often say today, "they stayed in their lane".

Today's relationships are much more challenging. More and more couples have their own careers and their own dreams and goals, they try to share not only the financial burden, but the responsibilities at home. While it is what we are accustomed to the fact of the matter is our ability to stay together in the relationship has suffered as we see a higher break up and divorce rate. Why? With all the sharing of responsibility how come it is not producing greater happiness and togetherness within the relationship?

It comes down to our male and female biological differences, mainly our hormones. The fact is men have 10 to 30 times more testosterone then women and women have 10 to 30 times more estrogen than men. We produce both, but when we are out of balance, meaning when men are producing to much estrogen they get stressed and angry. And when women get stressed it is because they have too much testosterone. How does this happen? Because as men and women are both working they are put in position where the women in her job starts producing more testosterone throwing her out of balance, while a man in his job is producing more estrogen throwing him out of balance. The result: A new dynamic in our relationship with each other. What are we to do? Thankfully Dr. John Gray the world's #1 relationship expert (And author of "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus") joins us no A New Direction to help us get not only our hormones in balance, but also our relationship.

His latest book entitled "Beyond Mars and Venus: Relationship Skills for Today's Complex World" is stellar. It is an eye opening look at how our biological differences, combined with our work, combined with our other relationships affect us both negatively and positively. Dr. Gray also provides solutions to helping your relationships not only grow and thrive, but take it to the next level. "Beyond Mars and Venus" is in my opinion as absolute must read! If you want your relationship to grow and be out of this world, listen to the show, and get your copy of "Beyond Mars and Venus".

The Sponsor of A New Direction are so important to bringing great guests like Dr. John Gray to the show! Please reach out and thank them for their generous support.

Did you that more than 17,000,000 employees this year will experience some sort of loss that will lead to their grief? Meaning that 47,000 employees today are walking into work in grief having experienced some tragic loss in their life. Did you also know that grief costs companies around $75 Billion in productivity loss a year. The fact is friends our leadership is failing those who grieve in our businesses. Most businesses have some sort of a bereavement policy, but what is it 3 days? I cannot imagine losing a child, or the love of one's life and expect to be back at work, much less be at the same productive rate prior to my loss. If you are in

leadership and you have any thoughts in your head like, "well, that's the policy", or "they need to

suck it up", or "that's not my problem"...then you as a leader are the problem. We can do better dealing with those stricken by grief due to tragic loss, and honestly we must do better! In this episode of A New Direction we are joined by two brothers, Guy and Anthony Casablanca. Guy is a licensed mortician and funeral director, and Anthony is a Leadership trainer and consultant. Together they have formed a powerful team to help us lead our employees while they are in grief.

Guy and Anthony have written what I consider to be the quintessential book on leadership and grief entitled, "The Dying Art of Leadership: How Leaders Can Help Grieving Employees Excel at Work". This is an absolute must read for every leader regardless of leadership role in the company. It should be read by every business coach and consultant to better advise their clients. It should be read by every employee as a tool to evaluate the company they work for. The fact is we will ALL experience grief from tragic loss, and how leadership handles it will tell you all you need to know about the people that lead and the organization they represent. The Dying Art of Leadership contains even such practical things as "what and what not to say to those in grief", "the do's and don'ts of leading a grieving employee", and so much more. Get yours here!
