A short essay on learning a second language as an American high school student. This is a translation from last week's Hungarian episode into English.
This week's episode is about a certain 20th century Hungary writer named István Örkény. He was born in 1912, which puts his youth straight through the two world wars and the handful of regime changes that transfigured Hungary and ultimately settled as the communist regime under János Kádár, which was still in place when Örkény died in 1979. He was a shockingly prolific writer and dramatist, even by Hungarian standards. He worked in many genres, but what makes him singular from other Hungarian pens, is that he concocted a genre of his own: The One-Minute Story.

This week's episode is with Daniel Oross, a political scientist whose research primarily concentrates on political socialization, youth politics, and democratic participation and innovation. He finished his doctoral dissertation at the Budapest Corvinus University, and two years ago spent a year in the United States on a Fulbright scholarship. He was an assistant scientist in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and is now a research fellow at the Center for Social Sciences.

This week's episode is with Ian O'Sullivan, a musician originally from Ireland based here in Budapest. Ian plays upright bass in the roots and alternative rock band Mongooz And The Magnet and leads his own trio called the O'Sullivan Three. He is also a Ph.D student the University of Pécs, where he also did his MD. His research concentrates on x-ray methods for measuring skeletal growth in children, but for the last number of years his heart has been in music.

A 2017 American Literary Translators Association Travel Fellow, her translations have appeared or are forthcoming in The Offing, Two Lines Journal, Waxwing, Split Lip Magazine, Arkansas International, and the Wretched Strangers anthology from Boiler House Press, among others. Her debut original short story was published in Juked magazine and was nominated for a PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers. She has stories forthcoming with Prairie Schooner and Passages North and poems forthcoming with Homonym Journal. Come September, she will study literary translation at the Balassi Institute in Budapest.

This week we talk with Alan Mackey, a mathematician currently working on statistics and machine learning at Google. Before joining Google he earned his PhD in Mathematics at UCLA in 2015. Alan used to be heavily involved in music but these days spends his free time in the outdoors climbing, running, and backpacking. Alan studied math in Hungary in the fall of 2009 with the Budapest Semesters In Mathematics Program, and returned again to the country in 2011.

This week we sit down with Daniel Vattay. Daniel started training as an engineer and very early on got into leadership positions, specifically learning teams, and realized that leadership was the core of his interest. He then moved into coaching and consulting, first agile practices and then leadership coaching. Later on he developed certifications in Gestalt and Body Oriented Psychotherapy, Ericksonian Hypnosis, and he is a master practitioner of NLP. Currently he does private therapy, and team coaching. His work boils down to working with people and aiding them in growth and self-transformation.

Galen holds an MA in Public Policy from Central European University, an MA in Development & Public Policy from the Institute Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals, and a BA in Global Studies from Arizona State University. He is in the class of foreigners from whom the life and fate of Hungary is very dear to their hearts.
Today we chat with the renowned poet and translator George Szirtes. George was born in Hungary in 1948, and emigrated to the UK at the age of 8. In the course of his career he has produced English translations of some of the hallmarks of Hungarian literature, including Imre Madách’s Tragedy of Man, Gyula Krúdy’s Adventure of Sinbad, many works by Sándor Márai, and perhaps most notably, several novels by the esteemed contemporary writer, László Krasznahoraki.
