A personal journal where I, Vincent Ritter, talk about things I’m working on, the up and downs of freelancing and finding more independence.
Life changes! Not. Ah yes, bliss.
I basically ramble about my project called tinylytics. And at the same time unable to talk or make proper sentences.
That's it... nothing more. You should subscribe.
Oh wait, and shoutouts... but really, I just mention it. Wait, is this episode a shoutout?

Short and sweet, it's back to school for the kid.
So what now? I've been up to a lot, but I won't cover it in this one.
Trying out new things and starting a new work and life balance. Will it stick?
Recorded September 5th, 2023
Gluon gets a new homepage, in preparation of some changes coming your way. Oh and it also got a dedicated update blog!
Next up I introduced data export for shoutouts.lol and looking at changing payment provider.
Looking forward to WWDC (The Apple developer conference).
Recorded June 5th, 2023
Finishing up the release for the new iOS app for Micro.blog. Working on Micropub and XML-RPC, and trying to get through it.
Talking about shoutouts.lol and the theme section, as I'm not really happy with it. Any ideas on what I should do? I certainly have some ideas. Adding support for more image formats.
Then I move from Bunny DNS back to Cloudflare for shoutouts.
And it's Micro.camp time this weekend! Check the link for details.
Recorded Monday, 15th of May 2023.
I talk about Micro.blog and getting it ready for the 3.0 and what remains.
Thoughts on digital "social" media and my decision to close Mastodon and not going down the route of hosting it. Writing for my self for "therapy".
Exploring the idea of having a central place for everything, like update blogs, newsletters and more.
Then randomly I talk about moving back to Overcast for my podcast needs, and supporting some new podcasts I've been enjoying over the years. That pretty much sums it up.
What should I do about Sublime Ads? I don't know...
Sorry, no meaningful show notes this episode as I wanted to get this out for your listening pleasure.
I touch on Micro.blog, the web and the app we’re building. Then I touch on Gluon, what I’ve been changing (like push notifications) and why – teasing some new features. And of course I forget to talk about the other features I added to Gluon, like pinned profiles 🙃 Oh and I touch on plans on monetising Gluon somehow… somewhere…
Next on the list a quick update on Sublime Ads and how I spun it off to create shoutouts.lol – and I tease a few ideas I have, even though I think it’s one of those well rounded 99% done projects, meaning I don’t want to change too much.
To finish the year I bring back apps from the dead and perhaps something new I might pick up.
Recorded December, 23rd 2022.
In this episode I talk about taking what I made for Sublime Ads and making it even simpler, in effect copying my own idea - because who needs GitHub Copilot?
So, introducing shoutouts.lol.
My journey to why I did it, like playing with the new Ruby on Rails 7 and import maps (huh?), and tell you more about shoutouts.
On why I kept it simple and building a base for my... next... project...s 😅

This week I talk about new things I worked on for Sublime Ads the past few weeks: Clients and Client portals for the PRO plan.
As I worked on it, I came to realise that there could be a much easier way to get started, so I’ve been working on something on the side.
Sunday was my day for Micro.blog and continued work on the app… including allowing to zoom the web view depending on your dynamic font size in iOS.
Overall just a quick update and more on it later.

We've been busy working on the Micro.blog iOS app for a few weeks, bringing a new update (version 3) to TestFlight, to you your favourite fruit company.
It's a long beta and will run along the releases of the Android version.
I cut a lot of this episode because of a car that started parking right next to me... I left some of my comments in. Then I tried talking more (not present in this episode) but more and more people started parking... so I gave up.
Thanks for listening. If you like the show, feel free to support me.

It's the first episode after the school holidays... and yes, just got around to editing it, so it's WAY out of date.
First off I welcome ya'll back and touch on trying to do a little less technology. You can skip this section...
Now to the juicy bits. Micro.blog App and recent Android changes and moving onto making it cross-platform (as in... get it ready for iOS release)(finally). And as you might be aware, we've come quite a long way since this episode.
I touch on profile pop ups that we introduced on Micro.blog.
Oh and Gluon... poor app.
Then I touch on my blogging habits in August and trying to stay offline a little more. You may also skip this section.

I've been working on a few updates to Gluon and I talk about slowly catching up with an Android release for those also. It's harder than I wanted because the past me was a little bit stupid.
A glimmer of hope for Sublime Ads? It's still at $0 MRR. Yay!

I'm planning a little code challenge, for Sublime Feed, but at the beginning of the next day... after recording this episode... I go completely against what I said here. Have a listen. Good for the record.
But anyway, Sublime Feed, a week to build something... but a week is not enough... as I tell myself over and over again.
More to come.

After weeks of behind the scenes tweaks to Sublime Ads, I finally announce what I've been working on. Image resizing. And no... image resizing wasn't the reason for all the changes... in fact it was figuring out pricing changes to keep it sustainable.
Changes to Micro.blog for much better responsive layouts. All in all I am super happy and it was well received. Manton is great to work with! I tease some other changes I'd like to do.
Planning a new Gluon website with new images and perhaps some snark... because everyone needs a bit of March.

The past few weeks I have been on the hunt for a time tracking app... and this is my journey what I found and how I use it, and why.
There was a deep itch I had to scratch, doubting my own ability to do what I am set out to do, so I try and get into the habit of time tracking... something I never really did and also pushed aside as a "this is a corporate thing".
But I out found something interesting...

Client work you say? Yeah, that didn't happen. I did jump from one task to another to keep my interesting going for a change of scenery. It's good to allow yourself to do that.
I tease a small code challenge, but I put it off for now, and it'll probably come a little later after I finished my client work.
A few tweaks to Gluon in this episode... mainly about the timeline and fixing a few bugs. Oh and adding Focus mode (mental health mode).
Then I tackle something I wanted to do for a while, which was adding a rudimentary timeline marker sync on Micro.blog. Nothing too complicated, but now it marks the last item you scrolled to on the main timeline - which means apps can make use of this! Deployed last week, before I could release this episode.

Micro Camp was over the weekend and I am happy the way it went in general. A lot of good things to take away with and improve on for Micro.blog.
Also announced the official app for Micro.blog.
Not everything was peachy with the platform of choice, so I had that spark of creativity to make something of my own, naturally expanding an old project of mine - even though I announced it was end-of-life. Good for keeping creative and experimenting.
Creativity comes and goes... so you need to keep your options open.

Welcome to another episode. Sponsored by... Hemispheric Views... no, just kidding.
School holidays are finished, so I'm trying to find my mojo again... always a little difficult when you have your kid at home.
Micro.blog for Android app is getting close to finish, which means I can work on the iOS portion of it (slowly). Looking forward to it.
Taking into account the state of the Micro.blog app, I will continue working on Gluon with the same codebase. And yes, it's React Native.
Sublime Ads upload forms... but wait... I kinda lost it and decided to work on smaller features. Trying to keep the momentum moving and help my productivity.
Oh and some changes to the podcast perhaps. Maybe I will start sponsorships.
Oh and Micro.camp is happening on March 11th.

Wait… this is not episode 36… it’s 38.
Ah yes, the world is an interesting place... and so is developing for the big bullies with native apps. So I am torn if I should continue with it. Is it worth it? Probably not...
"Safetyism"... no thank you!
I move onto working on the Micro.blog for Android app and enjoying working with Manton on it.
I reveal my word of the year...
To finish I give a quick update on Sublime Ads, now that we passed 1 year since launch.

Ah yes, it's the new year. The year of possibility and perhaps for people to start liking each other again? (please). Oh wait, this is not what I'm talking about.
I touch on the official Micro.blog app, for Android, I am working... and how happy I am with it. Will it replace Gluon? I don't know.
Sublime Ads turns one year old (from the public release). It makes zero money right now, but that's fine with me.
Then we go deep into my brain about Gluon... nah, not really... but I also mention it and my plan for that. No promises.
Then I start rambling about new years resolutions, nature, frogs mating and living in a sandwich.
Happy New Year everyone ✌️❤️

Sharing is caring, right? Yeah. I had some bad interaction with someone which brought me down.
I was put off from sharing more and just staying quiet... do what I do.
But it didn't feel right, after all, no one should make me feel that way.
A short episode to talk about that.
Recorded December, 6th 2021.
Yes, here I am again after some months of downtime. And yes, I probably get all the months wrong in the episode.
A quick update on my relationship with Micro.blog, what I'm working on... and the lack of updates - thank you screenshot crash on Android.
Diving into hybrid app development... liking it.
I realised that recording at home is somewhat difficult. So I'm back in the car with my trusty phone and terrible acoustics.

It's been nice and warm, but that means my brain just doesn't work. So, it's been a bit of a slow week.
Trying to reset my mind by trying to go away for the weekend.
I tease some new client venture... but not telling you just yet even though we all know about it already I guess haha.
More promoted content in Gluon and how I am not managing that. Trying to keep it fresh.
Sublime Ads had a little outage... which is incredibly shocking. And nope, I didn't work on it - didn't even take my laptop to my remote work location (but I didn't know that when I recorded).

We drove to the Masurian Lake District in Poland for a short holiday, which was really amazing... except the place we stayed at. At least our daughter had a great time!
On the drive I had much time to reflect on what I want to do next and how I approach things.
Oh and phones just rub me the wrong way.
Side track a little on playing games, or how I don't.
I hint at Gluon's future... and perhaps another side project to do with Micro.blog (a simple app for replying). Should I uninstall it?
Discord... hmmm, no thanks. So I'll be closing it down for Gluon, email is the way!
I talk about my other in progress app that I never work on... Status for updown.io.
And then something AMAZING happened, but I won't talk about it yet.
A tiny update on Sublime Ads and what I want to add to ads. Switching the Status page to updown.io.
OH and a super massive sorry for cutting the ending a little. I was disturbed, things were said... I was sad... feelings were hurt (for me). WHAT CAN YOU DO?

This is episode 30, which means... nothing really. However, I did get myself a dedicated microphone. So this is the first test for that. Don't mind the fan noise... it's keeping me cool!
Then I ramble on about some client work that didn't go so well, but we all moved on and made things better.
Which brings me to a segment on how I manage my time, or don't actually. Yes, I'm weird... but it works for me. Perhaps it'll work for you.
And no... no "watch buzz" was heard!

Getting an update ready for Gluon... oh and I started a Discord server just for giggles.
Thinking of a new podcast just specific to Gluon releases... because that is all I seem to do here on this one... blah blah blah.
Talking about Gluon. It's become apparent that a lot of people seem to use the app, more than I have initially thought. Which is nice of course.
A side project has landed on my desk. Hooray. Building it in Ruby on Rails. It's motivating me to start my other personal side project to take on HEY World. And nope, not talking about Basecamp.
And then we're back talking about... YESSSSSS... Gluon! My internal struggle with adopting SwiftUI or not continues, especially with everything going on in the Apple world these days.
And nope, interstellar travel does not exist.
Client work is important, but more important is family life... which sometimes I just mess up. I touch on this a little and give myself a financial check where I'm at if everything just went south.

Sometimes client work is fun... this is one of those where it is.
And yeah, I sound groggy in this one... just one of those things.
A quick teaser on my new idea... and should I go down the route of creating a social network for families? Probably a bad idea.

Oh my, recorded 3 times to make this episode. I give you a small peek into what I was talking about in those unreleased episodes...
Sublime Ads is launched and that means a huge weight has lifted off my shoulder allowing me to get going with other things.
Client work is coming in and I'm trying to find time to make other plans go forward.
HEY for Work is great. That's all I'm gonna say.
Did I mention the Apple documentation is bad? Nope? Well... it is. I talk myself into something LIVE on the podcast, as I talk. Internal conflict galore!
I may or may not be talking about SwiftUI.

Today is the day I finally release Sublime Ads for general sign up, so everyone can use it. I'm not expecting much however it's nice to formally allow anyone to register.
My mind was racing about changes that I wanted to make, but I'm holding myself back.
Is required two factor authentication set up too much for just getting people through the door? I'm torn.
I mention that this is a MVP and that I'm not stopping there of course.
I tease a few features planned already, because I want to use it in Gluon.

Hello everyone, a new episode for you enjoyment. I cover being on the mend after nearly two weeks of being ill. I missed my exercising routing, so it's good to be back.
On February 1st, 2021 I am planning to launch Sublime Ads to for general sign up, after nearly a year of development. I was bed bound, so I worked on it to polish a few things.
HEY for Work has infiltrated my mind and I am hooked! A tiny little review on why it's helping me.
A new version of Gluon is teased, but nothing concrete just yet.
SwiftUI woes... Gluon will stay on React Native for this next version... because the documentation for SwiftUI basically doesn't exist.
Continuing that, I dream of being "Accepted" for a job at Apple to get that documentation sorted.

The holiday plans were just plans after all. Nothing happened, but that doesn't mean you failed. Family time is important.
January is the month I plan for something new I want to pursue over the course of the year. From ideas in the shower (and other places) it goes to my notebook. First physical and then digital.
It's important to pursue your own ideas, no matter if someone else has done it. Don't be put off by it.
But first, I want to launch Sublime Ads in Q1 - I also talk about more tax/vat related stuff... boring. Did I say it's boring?
Designing in code... it's just easier for me. I prefer it from head to code. I'm just one person after all.
Did I mention Gluon? Nope.
And then I try not to spill too much on my new project idea.

This episode is full of self promotion. Hooray!
I start with motivation to restart my writing process when I'm working on a personal project.
Then I go ahead and blurb about Sublime Ads for most of it. So if you're interested you can see what it's about in the link below. Mainly talking about my latest changes and getting it ready for a public release. Super happy that a few folks are already using it. Certainly need to work on more documentation, although early feedback has been good!
Billing is boring. Probably chose the wrong domain name...
Video tutorials anyone?
Slowing down client work, even more is a must.
Then I mention that THIS year I wrote about slowing down... but because 2020 was a time warp it ends up I wrote it 2 years ago... pfff.
I hate the word "marketing" website... but I don't know a better way to describe it.
Should I live stream a frontend build??? Would be kinda fun.
A failed episode that I recorded, so I decide to mention it.
Do some stuff for yourself, it's important... even if you work for the "man".

Hello dear listeners, it's been a while. So last time I recorded and released it was in July... woah!
Anyway, here I am rambling away as usual. Am I selling it yet? Probably not.
I talk quickly about Gluon and the rewrite for SwiftUI... I've not been doing much here yet. Then I mention trying to release an update for Android "today". Let's see.
I talk about playing more games and less coding. Don't get me wrong, I love coding - it actually replaced my game playing for a long time.
Whilst on the topic on SwiftUI, later on in the episode, I mention picking up an older project and re-write it.

Hello dear listeners. It's been a while, and yeah... I recorded 3 times before releasing this one over the past few weeks. No pressure.
In this episode I talk about balancing client projects and personal ones... and how I find it difficult, but getting used to it.
I then dig into planning a small holiday... but not Disneyland... because it just wouldn't be any fun or have good memories associated with it.
Personal projects have been somewhat slow (don't forget I'm balancing stuff)... so some updates on my plans for Gluon and Sublime Ads.
Then I talk about sleeping... a lot.
That's it.
Thanks so much for listening.

Hello and welcome to another episode of me blabbing away, getting it all out there.
Late June we had the Apple Developer conference, also known as WWDC. I get totally excited about wanting to really get into SwiftUI and embrace the native platform as best I can.
Of course I don't want to loose sight of other platforms, so in a way this is ideal to really focus on each.
Then I talk about Picard.sh and what I have planned for that. Perhaps I'll explore a totally different galaxy instead.
To finish off I touch on Sublime Ads and getting it ready for public launch.
Oh and I now have a "Buy me a coffee" page allowing you to support my work, blog and of course this very podcast!

It's hard being a developer. It's hard to please the gods that are Apple. People bend over backwards for them and don't speak up.
The start of the episode is a bit gloomy and full of random thoughts. I left the blank gaps in there for effect...
I touch quickly on wanting to concentrate more on cross-platform services for my business... instead of concentrating on just one - I fight for the user!
Some Gluon updates. And then some Sublime Ads updates.
Random show title for sure, stick right to the end for the drama (not really).

In this episode I take a de-tour and install Windows on my machine via BootCamp after watching some of the Microsoft Build conference.
Setting up PHP, Ruby, databases and other things seemed pretty straight forward - although pretty alien to me...
I figure out that Windows runs pretty quick and I'm getting annoyed by the continued poor Apple software quality and the lack of anything "Developer" focused.
Apple certainly needs to do something in this space.
Oh and I mention "Rails" a lot... I actually meant Ruby! Brain = another dumpster fire 🤯

Hello, another episode for you listening pleasure. If I sound funny, I was actually lying in bed… less echo and I was a bit tired but felt like recording.
My daughter went back to Kindergarten this week, after 10 weeks away (due to… you know what). Then I concentrate really hard on playing games and see how Windows is so much better at games than the Mac (although I don’t go into detail).
Client projects galore, thankfully, so I need to get back into shape and do it.
To finish off, I give you a small update on personal projects… and wanting to write documentation. Yay.

I'm in the car, in the countryside. Warm weather, tired arms from meeting a tree with an axe.
I talk about how I concentrated just on my own personal projects the past few weeks whilst totally neglecting the client projects. Although this time it's fine due to relaxed timelines.

Yes, I just released an episode, but here is another one. Funny fact, I didn't like Episode 12 on the day so I decided to start with "Episode 12" instead of 13. So today I recorded the correct intro, whilst in the car for Episode 14.
Also featuring my daughter, left it in there for fun.
Anyhoo, I talk about a few more things on Sublime Ads and then I go on about my longterm goals with my apps and ideas.
A bit longer than usual but I hope you get the gist. I do repeat myself a bit just to bring home my points hehe.
Oh and I mention Sublime Feed... my long lost project. Hope to get back to it as it's something I'm certainly interested in. Perhaps in a different form.
I should named this episode: "It ticks the box"... Oh... I did!

Better late than never... this was recorded last weekend, so excuse me if it's a little out of date. Oh and I launched the Gluon update last week!
This episode I talk about re-integrating payment providers as I wasn't happy with my first choice, due to very poor API documentation and the lack of anything great concerning testing, and other pain points.
Then I talk about VAT... and why it's important when you're based in the EU.

This episode was recorded on Sunday night... and yeah, I'm just getting around to it. It's been a busy week with Sublime Ads and other commitments.
I kick off talking about that silly App Store Review rejection for the Gluon 2020.3 update... because Apple is being very Apple.
Then I talk about Sublime Ads, my little project that I'm working on to keep my mind off a few things. I go into a little more detail what it's about. Excuse the rambling, I'm pretty excited about the Settings screen! Just one of those things you got to do.
Oh and when I say "last Friday", I mean March, 27th.
Thanks for listening.

Episode 10… 🥳
In it I talk about that secret, invisible, project that I’ve started last week. Even though it’s been on my mind for a while.
Perhaps I will announce it “tomorrow”, but let’s see. I’m having fun.

Thanks so much for listening everyone!
Hello. It’s been a while since I last released an episode. There is just too much going on right now on planet Earth to be able to concentrate. However, I won’t talk about it.
In this episode I talk about changes to Gluon and starting yet another project, on the side, just to keep my mind busy. Not revealing it just yet though.

Wishing everyone good health!
Sometimes you just should take a few hours, or a few days, off to recharge. In this episode I talk about exactly that. After years of self sacrifice to get where I am now, I see the importance of taking time to just do nothing.
I’m going to be honest, it’s hard to do it at first. So taking small steps is key.
My health is so much better now, compared to a few years ago. Yes I still get stressed, but it now affects me differently than it did when I wasn’t taking time for myself. <- That didn’t make it into the podcast, so I’m hoping to blog about it too.
After two weeks with no podcast, I took the opportunity to finally record and get something out again.
I finished my big client project and talk about that it went well in general. Then I touch on starting the 2020.3 update to Gluon and adding Pins to the profile page.
Are testers annoyed by the amount of TestFlight builds?
Then I go ahead and share that I want to take a small break from Gluon and concentrate on Picard.sh and finish the registration flow and login.
I also quickly touch on payment providers and why I’m choosing Paddle.

Hope I can do another, better, episode soon.
Welcome to another episode! This week Gluon launched on iOS, so I’m happy to share the good news on the podcast and thank everyone for using the app and giving me your feedback.
I touch on one of the client projects that is finishing and then looking ahead for March and April on my freelance projects.
To round it off I want to re-focus on blogging about my other projects that I’m slowly working on, namely Status and Picard.

Thanks so much for listening!
In this episode I answer the following question from Ingmar:
have you ever had to sub-contract someone when you ran out of time? Would you be willing to do this at all?
In other exciting news Gluon was rejected once again with app review… and I record the podcast at home (so I may sound more nervous than usual).
Note to self that I need to make sure not to move the microphone from one location to the other. You’ll know when you hear it.
To round it all off I quickly think about using DigitalOcean Spaces and touch on Picard, my server management project.
Thanks all for listening. If you anyone has questions, please let me know.
Another week, another episode… no matter the weather!
This week I try and talk about taking it slow when it comes to project work and how easy it is to rush things. Then I go ahead, then I go ahead, then I go ahead and repeat myself a few times… I guess practice makes perfect!
And the worst part… I never got that coffee.
If you want to send in questions you can find me here on my website or on Micro.blog, or if you really must… on Twitter:
And in this episode I touched on the following projects:
In this episode I talk about getting Gluon ready for another dose of app review (again). Third time lucky?
I touch on adding a proof-of-concept Gluon blocking API, built on Ruby on Rails, that complements the app if so needs be and talk about adding post draft support for hosted Micro.blog blogs.
Towards the end I quickly talk about that my daughter has been home, off sick, since around Thursday and working around it when you have many things on your plate - and how I deal with it personally.

Thank you all for listening and I’ll see you next week.
Another episode for your listening pleasure 😃 Recorded on the 7th of January.
I talk about planning for the future and touch on what my plans are in terms of passive income. I also reflect on the holidays, which was nice and quiet, and also about starting to meditate - specifically how it’s helping me, day to day, to deal with life in general.
This episode was recorded before I wrote my post about Gluon after the phone call with the Apple review team.
I touch on taking on a little less client work that I wrote about last year and how that’s working out so far.
And to finish I talk about my plans for some of my projects:
Thank you so much for listening.
Hey, I’m Vincent and this is my new podcast Abstract Development. A personal journal where I talk about things I’m working on, the up and downs of freelancing and finding more independence.
This is my first episode, recorded on the 9th of December whilst waiting for my wife and daughter. Yep, I just managed to listen to myself and cut it up to make it bearable.
In this episode I just say hello and talk a little about myself and a few tiny bits of my history leading up to now. I don’t go too far. I probably make many mistakes, but that’s fine. I’m learning! I do say “microcast” but it certainly turned out longer at 21 minutes.
This is nothing professional yet and just getting a feel for it. I do want to explore another medium, so I think podcasting is the way to go.
Hope you enjoy it and thanks for listening to my slightly German accent.
