Today's guest on Cyber Security Matters is Adam Shostack. After working at Microsoft for close to 10 years, solving important security problems and influencing the design of products such as Microsoft Windows, Office & Xbox, Adam became a cyber security advisor for startups and SMBs.
Adam speaks in plain language about his simple approach to cyber security, using models to help non-technical business decision makers think about cyber security. He leads organizations to ask:
What are we working on? What can go wrong? What can we do about it? Did we do a good job?
Using Zoom as a recent example, Adam explains that the lesson to learn is to shift the cyber security conversation to the beginning of building and securing products, services and business processes. Pay the cyber security debt early on (do security by design vs. bolting it on after the fact) so that you don't have to be paying it over and over again down the road and end up paying so much more than what was necessary.

Ransomware keeps going strong for cyber criminals. Are businesses doing enough to prevent it from happening, detect when it's happening and handle it if they do get hit with ransomware?
In this episode of Cyber Security Matters, Dominic and Christian hammer into the harsh realities for businesses that fall victim to ransomware attacks. Ransomware is a threat which must be taken seriously.

Today's guest is Raquel Borras,Chief Excitement Officer of True To You Branding.
Raquel’s expertise in social media and branding started with LinkedIn, where she studied other social media moguls and influencers. Raquel believes that bringing valuable content, authenticity and vulnerability to your social media is the key to gaining a strong following and presence.
Raquel explains that if you want people to listen to what you have to say, you need to be consistent with putting out content that adds value. Central to that value is that people need to connect with a person.
They want to see the face and the personality behind the brand. A lot of brands forget that there are humans with feelings and emotions interacting with your content. You will never be able to connect with them if you're not being authentic.
Raquel had a major turning point in her approach to social media. She took a big risk and did a video, sharing her story about how she suffered from depression and attempted suicide. It encouraged people to come out and connect with her and celebrate what she shared. It was the best thing she could have done. It resonated and it helped people because she was being authentic.

For cyber criminals, it's getting cheaper and cheaper to successfully hack organizations. Cyber Crime has become more lucrative than drug trafficking & human trafficking.
Society is largely uninformed and uneducated on cyber risks. Tech people have created a strange mystique around technology. As a tech person himself, Scott Madsen, CEO of Cingo Solutions, believes that we need to do a better job so that businesses can properly understand the risks and protect their investments. Technology and cyber security professionals need to break down the communication barriers starting with removing acronyms and tech jargon.
Executives should not be told: ""It's too difficult for you to understand."" Business leaders are smart and they are where they are because they've earned it. They need to be armed with the right information to better understand the threats to their organization, properly train their people and make business decisions.

On today's episode of Cyber Security Matters, Christian & Dominic speak with Michael Leung, a cyber security practitioner bringing you accurate information from the front lines.
Michael explains the importance of understanding your data flow, where your crown jewels (most valuable data) are and the power of cyber risk assessments. A Cyber Risk Assessment will unearth weaknesses in a company's policies and in their cyber security awareness training of their people.
These are often more critical to an organization, and, therefore, more urgent to address. An assessment can also highlight some of the good things an organization is doing - in particular, some of the good things that IT is doing but haven't communicated. People outside of IT often have no idea of these achievements so it's an eye opener for them and something tangible for the organization to build upon.
Some organizations are just looking for a check mark in the "cyber security box." Michael says: "You get what you pay for!" If you budget $500 for cyber security, that's the level of quality you will get. Beyond setting an adequate budget, Michael covers proper handling of incidents, strong cyber security leadership and a healthy culture which starts at the top of an organization.

March is 'Fraud Awareness Month' and this episode of Cyber Security Matters is about fraud prevention. Our guest today is Steve Wilson, Cybercrime, Digital Investigation and Technology Consultant at The Digital Society Org. Steve has a compassionate approach to preventing fraud. Rather than shaming victims, he gives some good lessons learned about how to avoid being taking in by sophisticated fraudsters.
Steves career has gone from being in the military, to law enforcement with the police department, to banking, to working with accounting firms to contract work with BCIT. On top of doing fraud prevention and digital forensics, he is working on is PhD. in the United Kingdom. It seems he does everything except for golf.
The three biggest fraud scams of 2019 were: Identity Theft, Ransomware and Phishing with fraud losses in the billions of dollars. Steve explains that technology has made it easier for fraudsters to perpetrate their scams agains unsuspecting victims, lowering the barrier for people to commit fraud. In romance scams, highly sophisticated social engineering often lasts months as fraudsters build a relationship, and millions of dollars have been lost in this way.
People don't want to report this because they're embarrassed and there is absolutely no recourse because the fraudsters usually can't be traced. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Steve believes that it is helpful to report an incident to the authorities if you happen to fall victim to any kind of fraud. It can become a political issue and affect change on a political level as well as raise awareness to prevent other people from going through the same thing.

In today's episode of Cyber Monday, Dominic & Christian lay down the bottom line of what companies are doing wrong and how cyber security should be properly handled.
It's not about getting caught up in the latest news story or oversimplifying security into just one micro-aspect of the subject. If cyber security matters to your company, there are basics that every organization can start with.
If you've neglected your cyber security until now, you will want to tune in as Christian & Dominic lay out exactly what your cyber security 'bootcamp' should look like to get you started on the path to reasonable, legally defensible security.
In many previous episodes, Christian & Dominic have discussed the relationship between Information Technology and Cyber Security, as well as the distinct differences between these two business functions.
Now, for the first time on the show, they put an IT Managed Service Provider on the hot seat to get clear answers directly from an IT perspective.
Important questions are answered including:
What questions should a business ask when selecting an IT provider? What are some things to avoid and some red flags to watch out for? What does a healthy relationship between IT and the business look like? And finally: What is an IT provider's perspective of, and approach to cyber security?
Enjoy today's episode of Cyber Monday with guests Mike Romaniuk & Ray Raggett, directors of Rent-A-Nerd Computer Services Inc.
Hopefully you never have to experience a nasty cyber attack on your business or your family. In the event that you do end up in this predicament, sometimes the situation can escalate quickly.
Under these circumstances, it's good to have an experienced crisis negotiator on your team who can help you manage the human element, including the inevitable stress and emotions, as well as the cyber criminals that might be holding your company's data ransom.
In this episode of Cyber Monday, Dominic & Christian interview Calvin Chrustie, Senior Partner at, InterVentis Global. Calvin lays out his lessons learned from 25+ years of dealing with criminals and terrorists around the world. He gives insights into the criminal elements that target organizations of all sizes. These cyber criminals range from 'Lone Wolves' to transnational organized crime groups and even nation-states.
You will enjoy this conversation as Calvin speaks from real-world experience with law enforcement, the United Nations and business.
In this episode of Cyber Monday, Christian and Dominic have a very pointed conversation about cyber security.
Why do organizations reach out for cyber security help?
The reasons are either reactive (they had a data breach, got hit by ransomware) or proactive (a current or future client relationship is at stake). This second category is directly tied to a business reason - Perhaps their client has been clamping down on vendor risk management and they've been asked to provide proof that they have a cyber security program. There are very clear business ramifications and motivation for this one in that they stand to lose a big client or prospective client.
What's the difference between Cyber Security and IT - Doesn't IT handle our cyber security?
IT and cyber security are both separate, distinct functions within an organization that help the business run. Yes they intertwine, but they are NOT one and the same. There can be a misalignment and miscommunication between the IT department and the business.
Cyber security can play a role to facilitate that communication and create a harmonious relationship between cyber security, IT and the business.
In this episode of Cyber Monday, Christian & Dominic speak with Mike Knapp, Business Growth Coach & Advisor at Incrementa Consulting Inc. Mike calmly and methodically unpacks critical business subjects such as business growth, the difference between strategy and execution, managing business risks (including cyber risks) and mindfulness & meditation.
Hear about Mike's (un) consulting approach to helping businesses scale and succeed and allow it to provoke change and improvement in your organization.
In today’s episode of Cyber Monday, Christian & Dominic speak with Neil Belenkie. Neil is the CEO of $2,000 Coffee, the Co-Founder of Sploda.com and the Mayor of the Village of Belcarra. Neil breaks down the world of business & investing and gives a refreshingly authentic perspective on politics.
Why are founders in need of raising capital often unsuccessful? - Neil explains that a founder needs to communicate to a funder how that funder is going to make money. A founder needs to explain to a funder why the opportunity isn’t risky. Investors invest in business opportunities, not ideas. You need to show investors how much money they will make, in what time frame, at what risk tolerance. Without this data an investor cannot complete their own investment diligence process.
When looking for an experienced business advisor, what should business owners look for? - When it matters most, you go to the medical specialist to cure the people you love. In the same way, if you love your business, you should have the same standard and go to the experts who have solved that problem over and over.
When it comes to cyber security, why would you want someone to be learning on your dime? - You bring in a specialist when it matters. Data is what gives many companies their value. But your data assets aren’t worth what you think they’re worth unless they’re properly protected. Cyber security due diligence is something that Neil recommends when evaluating a business or investment opportunity.
Today's episode of Cyber Monday is about CYBER INSURANCE... the most exciting thing to happen to the insurance industry since Lloyds of London was founded in 1686!
Dominic & Christian speak with Derek May of HUB International about today's biggest cyber threats and the role of cyber insurance in managing your company's cyber risks.
Compared to other insurance categories (property insurance, general liability, errors & omission and directors & officers insurance), cyber is a relatively new category of coverage. It will be interesting to see how cyber insurance evolves over the next few years as cyber attacks and cyber insurance claims become more frequent.
Once your organization has assessed your cyber risks and put proper cyber protections in place, take advantage of the risk transfer options available through cyber insurance policies.
In so many ways, cyber security is a competitive advantage for your business. Besides just protecting your data, cyber security can speed up sales cycles, improve the customer experience and help you make better strategic decisions.
Dominic and Christian have a value-packed conversation with Heidi Martin full of strategic and tactical tips for leaders of organizations to better implement effective cyber security. Heidi goes in depth on topics such as what makes business leaders, corporate cultures and cyber security policies effective.

Today’s Christmas edition of Cyber Monday is a review of 2019. In this mini episode, Christian & Dominic reminisce about the past year and honor previous guests of the show.
Since the show began in September, some key themes have emerged that include: how to get started in cyber security, the importance of the role culture plays in cyber risk management and some myths that were busted. Among those myths are that cyber criminals don’t target smaller businesses.
2019 was a year with no shortage of cyber attacks and data breaches in the news. Dominic gives a public service announcement not to buy into the sensationalism often portrayed in the media, but to look at the facts from reliable sources.
The episode concludes with a ‘holiday message’ to take your cyber security seriously over the holidays and always (cyber criminals sometimes work evenings, weekends and holidays)!
Merry Christmas!
