On this week's Mind Your Business, we visit with Dr. Jim Street, Curriculum Coordinator for the Watauga Leadership Institute and Founder of Ridgeline Leadership. He'll preview this year's Encore program, and we'll talk about the value of team and individual skill development, and how that applies to work, life, and helps define ones sense of community.
Encore is a cohort-style course offers attendees the opportunity to expand their leadership knowledge, mindset, and skills. Each two-hour session will examine a specialty topic that builds off the core elements of the Watauga Leadership Institute curriculum, while encouraging the self-renewal of your guiding leadership principles.

It doesn't take long to think about someone in your life that has stayed in the working world for longer than they may have liked. The retirement dream and target has changed a lot over the years, and that exit from the daily grind becomes more complicated when retiring from a business you own, and that entity has a less than certain future. How do you step away while still providing employment opportunities for your team? How do you get the full value for decades of hard work?
On this week's Mind Your Business, we unlock Employee Ownership, not only as an exit strategy for business owners, but also as an employee incentive for small businesses that dream of seeing their company and its culture survive for generations. Illa Burbank, Executive Director of the North Carolina Employee Ownership Center (NCEOC) is our guest this week, and she'll help provide a definition to employee ownership as we explore the different tools within this strategy. We'll also talk about how entrepreneurs can use this ownership system at the start of their business journey, giving them more options for their eventual exit.
The NCEOC is hosting the North Carolina Business Continuity & Employee Ownership conference in Raleigh on Wednesday, September 16th, where business owners can learn more about these strategies, and how employee ownership can be positioned as a unique employee retention incentive.

It's been almost 21-months since Hurricane Helene's impact was felt across Western North Carolina. While the region has largely recovered from some of the notable physical aspects of the story, the economic recovery will be going on for quite some time.
Last week, Governor Stein's Advisory Committee for Western North Carolina recovery met in Boone, where the draft version of the region's Long-Term Economic Recovery plan was discussed. While the full version has not yet been released, valuable feedback came from this discussion that will inform the full report, set to be released later this fall.
On this week's Mind Your Business, we visit with Sharon Decker, Governor Stein's Senior Advisor for WNCs Long-Term Recovery. She and the GROW NC team have been hard at work, collecting data and experiences from across the region, with the goal of leaving Western North Carolina in a stronger position than what existed pre-Helene. We'll discuss how this plan will be communicated and how existing assets can prepare the region for economic growth in popular sectors.
To advance this work, it's been made abundantly clear from lawmakers at the State and Federal level that additional funding will be required. Earlier this week, Senator Ted Budd testified before US Senate colleagues, and we'll hear exactly what he shared as he works to keep the voice of Western North Carolina alive in Congress.

The Federal Reserve System is the central bank of the United States. Its mandate is to promote the effective operation of the U.S. economy. Sometimes such high-flying agencies or policy influencing organizations can feel detached from the day-to-day experiences that make up the High Country economy. However, the Federal Reserve uses a network of economists and data analysts to ensure the voice of Main Street is being heard and helping inform Federal policy and direction.
On this week's Mind Your Business, we visit with Bethany Greene, Regional Economist for the Charllotte Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Bethany monitors regional economic trends through data analysis and engagements with the business community in North and South Carolina.

July is prime time for tourism season across the High Country. As the calendar flips, vacationers flock to the area, especially those melting in the record heat off the mountain.
On this week's Mind Your Business, we will discuss the intentionality that goes into creating the visitor experience, and what July means to both the anchor attractions as well as other businesses that benefit from increased traffic. As we move through the month of June, the Mountaineer 10-miler, High Country Jazz Festival, and Boonerang are among the summer events that are officially in the books.
On this week's Mind Your Business, we dive into the early numbers regarding the economic impact of the Mountaineer 10-miler and Boonerang.
Charlie Mercer, CEO of Capstone Event Group rejoins the show to discuss the post-race survey results from over 850 participants in the Mountaineer 10-miler, which includes a breakdown on runner demographics, lodging impacts, shopping and dining activity, and likelihood of repeat trips to the High Country.

Earlier this month, the Hunger & Health Coalition welcomed Lindsey Sullivan as the organization's new Executive Director. A landmark childcare partnership arrived in the High Country last week — one designed to stabilize two different workforces at once. On Friday, May 15th, UNC Health Appalachian officially announced their participation in the North Carolina Tri-Share Child Care Program, becoming the first healthcare system in Western North Carolina to do so.
On this week's Mind Your Business, we were at Friday's press conference and have the audio. This week, UNC Health Appalachian became the first healthcare system in Western North Carolina to launch a partnership with the North Carolina Tri-Share program — a childcare cost-sharing model that splits tuition three ways between the employer, the employee, and the state.

This week marks the 3rd annual Fairway Fore Foundation Golf Classic at Jefferson Landing. Earlier this week, FEMA announced its allocation of $103 million in Hurricane Helene related Public Assistance funding across 50 projects throughout Western North Carolina. Watauga County schools is set to receive over $28 million for the repair and repurposing of the old Valle Crucis School site.

As we have discussed over the last several weeks, restoration work tied to the Great American Outdoors Act of 2021 has resumed along in the Blue Ridge Parkway in Watauga County. Road Ready: Food Truck Fundamentals is an upcoming workshop for those seeking to grow or sustain a food truck business. This two-day experience will be held March 25-26 and is organized through the Small Business Center at Caldwell Community College at Technical Institute, in conjunction with AppHealthCare, Empowering Mountain Food Systems, and the Watauga County Cooperative Extension.

Workforce Development has been a popular topic of focus for the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce as 2026 gets started. While we celebrate programs tied to the recruitment and retention of talent, we must not take for granted the system that creates the classroom experience that seeds important workforce pipelines.

In late 2025, Jon Dalton George was sworn in as Mayor of the Town of Boone, succeeding Tim Futrelle. In making this move, George vacated his seat on Town Council to assume the Mayor's chair. The town has recently opened the application process for those who wish to be considered for that vacant seat.

Organizations strive to stay true to their mission.
The Watauga Land Trust was formed in 1995, established by Appalachian State University students concerned with protecting Howard Knob, a mountain adjacent to the Town of Boone.
The new organization raised local awareness about the unprecedented pace of development not just around Boone, but across North Carolina’s northwestern mountains. These concerns galvanized the local community and in 1997 the Watauga Land Trust changed its name to High Country Conservancy and expanded its jurisdiction to include Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties. The organization’s mission was “to protect the natural resources of Appalachia by conserving land with significant ecological, cultural, recreational, or scenic value in the North Carolina High Country.”
In May of 2010, Blue Ridge Rural Land Trust based in West Jefferson, North Carolina and High Country Conservancy, based in Boone merged to create Blue Ridge Conservancy, a private, non-profit organization that has protected over 22,000 acres in Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey Counties.
In early October 2025, Blue Ridge Conservancy announced after 30 years of effort, it has secured the opportunity to purchase 73 acres on the north and east side of Howard Knob. This property adjoins the existing 5-acre park owned by Watauga County, and will protect the land forever and provide public access for nature-based recreation, including hiking and rock climbing.

We'll hear about how the organization's persistence saw them achieve their founding objective. We'll also discuss BRC's plans to enhance public access to this property in a manner that enhances outdoor recreation opportunities in storied area of Watauga County.

On September 5th, the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation reopens its High Country Business Disaster Grant Program, which has been in place since September 2024 to support businesses in Watauga, Ashe, and Avery counties impacted by Hurricane Helene.
On this week's Mind Your Business, we will explain the criteria for the fourth funding round of this program, which will be centered around revenue loss for hurricane-impacted businesses.

Fall is inching closer and that means college football season is just around the corner! As App State kicks off another season, it's football program has placed Boone under the college football spotlight many times over the years. Fans bring renewed energy to The Rock each fall, and their gameday visits to the High Country make the Mountaineers a key economic driver in our region.

Phase I of Hurricane Helene repair along the Blue Ridge Parkway continues in Watauga County, but we are getting closer to completion of a key stretch of roadway between Parkway Elementary School and Bamboo Gap.

Over the years the types of health care offerings in the High Country have continued to evolve. The Middle Fork Greenway is one of the most significant ongoing economic development projects in the High Country, connecting the towns of Boone and Blowing Rock by 6.5 miles of trail. Celebrated for its scenic beauty and connections to Appalachia culture, the Blue Ridge Parkway stretches 469 miles through Virginia and North Carolina and serves as the longest linear park in the United States. While its footprint is massive, it's impacts are felt on a hyper-local level, with communities uniquely imprinting themselves toward the 16.7 million visitors that pass through the park each year.
After years spent gathering support, the Blue Ridge Parkway was granted $127M of the $1.3 billion Great American Outdoors Act, which was passed by Congress in 2022. This established the opportunity to complete decades-long deferred maintenance along the Parkway's entire corridor.
The combination of these planned projects and the necessary detours, partial, and full road and feature closures in areas now impacted by Hurricane Helene have communities, visitors, and residents concerned about the short and long-term impacts of these necessary projects.
On this week's Mind Your Business, we set the context for the economic and community impact of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and provide an update on what comes next in terms of decisions about current repairs and long-term infrastructure upgrades. Agriculture has always been an influential contributor to Watauga County's economic performance.
In its 2024 statistics report, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture reported $13.85 million in cash receipts generated by Watauga County farms, with an additional $5 million in economic impact coming from Watauga County Christmas Tree growers. The business of farming has changed a great deal over the decades. Now agritourism is counted on to keep many of these multi-generation family-farms producing.

On Friday, January 31, 2025, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein was in Boone and announced the creation of a pool of $30M for the Western North Carolina Small Business Initiative II, a grant program for eligible businesses in Helene-impacted counties.

BONUS CONTENT ALERT!! The North Carolina General Assembly is in recess and we have a few short updates about what has transpired in Raleigh over the past few weeks and months.
The main focus of this bonus installment of Mind Your Business centers around Early Childhood Education, and action taken by the NC House and Senate to extend compensation grants, or stabilization grants, to the end of the calendar year. The Round-Up for the Greenway is an annual community-wide fundraiser partnering with local Watauga County businesses to help fund the continued construction of the Middle Fork Greenway, a project of the Blue Ridge Conservancy.
During the month of July, businesses ask their customers to Round Up to the nearest dollar. Last year, 56 local businesses, plus hundreds of individual community donations, raised a total of $252,576. These funds were matched by state grants for the construction of Boone Gorge Park, which is slated to begin later this year. Once developed, Watauga County will own and maintain this park along the Middle Fork Greenway.

Positive connections between communities make a region like the High Country stronger. Partnership on one project can lead to future dialogue about other collaborative opportunities. The more we work to connect our local towns, counties, and their governmental entities, the better the chance for businesses and individuals to find similar ways to work with one another.
The Blue Ridge Conservancy works each day to protect and preserve the places we love throughout the High Country. Unique projects like the Middle Fork Greenway, which will connect Boone and Blowing Rock with 6.5 miles of greenway trail along the middle fork of the New River, bring a physical connection to two towns that already work with one another on a variety of projects. The physical linkage between the two will only enhance the case for future partnerships between Watauga County's two largest municipalities.

This project includes the permanent protection of an important High Country viewshed and will foster more access points to public lands that include several of the area's most scenic settings. During its scheduled meeting Tuesday, October 3, the Watauga County Board of Commissioners granted approval for the Watauga Economic Development Commission to conduct a comprehensive study and analysis of childcare in the county.
The study will be conducted by Dancy Research, a North Carolina-based economic development research firm, who recently conducted a similar study for the Wilkes County Economic Development Commission. Cyndi Dancy, Owner and Principal, will team with Dr. Pamela Shue, an Associate Professor for in the Department of Family and Child Studies at Appalachian State University to conduct the research. They will use a collaborative and economic approach to gather pertinent information from statistical sources and stakeholders, identify gaps in service, and make recommendations of action steps to fill those gaps. The full study is projected to take seven months to complete.

She'll also outline how data will be collected and ways for the community to engage in the process.

On Friday, September 22nd, the North Carolina General Assembly have final approval to NC House Bill 529, the Current Operations Act of 2023. More commonly referred to as the 2023-25 NC State budget, this document includes a number of well publicized spending priorities, like raises for State employees and educators, early childhood development, and affordable housing. The passing of the budget also triggered Medicaid Expansion for North Carolina, which will go into effect December 1st, and stands to benefit patients and heath care providers across the State.

In 2018, Brad Moretz and Brenda Speckmann of Appalachian Ski Mountain initiated the Round-Up for the Middle Fork Greenway - a way to engage businesses in a month-long fundraiser for the up-and-coming Greenway project. That first year was a success, and since then, community businesses and individuals have rallied behind the Round-Up for the Middle Fork Greenway to raise nearly $700K.
This money has leveraged over $5.5 million in state grants and Tourism Development Authority funding for land acquisition, trail construction, trailhead development, design, engineering, permitting, and feasibility studies. The funding has also helped protect 47 acres of land along the greenway, including pocket parks, trailheads, river access, and trail. This year's Round-Up for the Greenway proceeds will go toward constructing Boone Gorge Park.

Energy costs more right now, a statement we can across multiple sectors. Whether it's at the gas pump or the thermostat, we've seen higher prices throughout 2022. While gas prices have been moving in a downward direction over the last couple of months, other energy sectors are still dealing with high production costs, meaning that change is passed along to the consumers of those services.

Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, few experts could have accurately predicted what was about to happen to the entrepreneurial landscape in North Carolina and across the nation. While the early days of the pandemic saw many businesses shutter and close their doors, few expected that over the next two years new business formations in North Carolina would be at an all-time high.
Since 2020, the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State has reported over 300,000 new businesses registered. In 2021 alone, the 178,300 new business creation filings were more than double the amount registered four years prior.

As we continue our series on housing needs, challenges, and opportunities in Watauga County, we spend this episode of Mind Your Business on the numbers.
Beginning in early 2021, the High Country Association of Realtors, the North Carolina Association of Realtors, and Bowen National Research commissioned a research study and needs assessment for the High Country and its individual counties. The data set that came from this research helps tell the story of how the housing market is performing in these areas, both from an affordability standpoint, but also from an inventory perspective.
A comprehensive 400+ page report on housing needs specifically for Watauga County came from this work, and is the perfect data collection project to time with the Watauga Housing Forums, which start in March. We will talk more about that specific effort next week, but for now, let's dig into the numbers with Michael Cooper and Patrick Bowen, and hear just how Watauga County's housing needs have evolved over the years.

Recruiting and retaining quality employees has never been more important. While some small businesses are not in position to offer a full suite of health care benefits, it costs very little to a business to arm their employees with information about the latest affordable options on the market.
Due to COVID-related funding enhancements provided through programs such as the American Rescue Plan, access to and plans offered under the Affordable Care Act have changed over the last two years. The open enrollment period to access ACA plans has been extended to January 2022, meaning people are once again looking for answers as they navigate available plans and options before the deadline.
On December 8th, the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce hosted ACA 101 on the Keep Boone Healthy Community Information Channel.
