Joe Rihn is a DJ, musician and writer with endless enthusiasm for his hometown of Los Angeles. His show Audio Days explores the wide world of electronic music and beyond with particular attention to artists pushing the boundaries of sound.

In this special interview episode of Audio Days, influential UK artist Mark Stewart discusses his body of work, his creative processes and the music that has inspired him along the way. After beginning his career as the frontman of Bristol’s celebrated post-punk band The Pop Group, Stewart went on to break new ground in electronic music through his work with dub producer and On-U Sound Records head, Adrian Sherwood, along with drummer Keith LeBlanc, bassist Doug Wimbish and guitarist Skip McDonald. Having performed as members of the Sugar Hill Records house band on early hip hop classics including “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, LeBlanc, Wimbish and McDonald provided the instrumental foundation for Stewart’s 1985 album, “As the Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade,” as well as other projects such as Tackhead and Fats Comet. With his new record “VS.,” which releases April 8, 2022 on Emergency Hearts, Stewart continues in that collaborative spirit. In addition to including names like KK Null, Stephen Mallidner and Mike Watt in its roster of uncompromising artists, VS. features contributions from late musicians Lee “Scratch” Perry and Mika Vainio.

Following the hour-long interview segment, this episode features a mix of industrial, synth-wave and left-field cuts from the orbit of Mark Stewart and beyond.

It was a treat to chat with the minds behind one of the coolest and most significant stores in rave and NYC history. From the early 1990s until the close of its second location in 1999, Liquid Sky was a clothing shop, a record store, a hang-out zone, a permanent art installation—it was a lot of things to a lot of young people, the grandest of countercultural “third places” the 90s saw. Their store merch was home to Claudia Rey’s one-of-a-kind pieces of street fashion (a lot of it predating the term itself), and to Carlos “Soul Slinger’s” expertly curated vinyl selections, much of it exclusive DJ imports that became a ground zero for British jungle and avant-garde breaks for NYC and, indeed, America.

On May 3rd 2023, UCLA hosted a conversation between Xuman (aka Gunman Xuman) and Samuel Lamontagne. Xuman is a social activist and legend of Senegalese Hip Hop, who’s been active for over thirty years. He’s a member of the pioneer group Pee Froiss, and besides his solo career, also created the Journal Rappé for which he’s internationally known.

The conversation happened in Royce Hall and covered Xuman’s roots and upbringing, the history of Hip Hop in Senegal, and how Hip Hop is an important medium to build solidarity across the African Diaspora.

*After Xuman returned to Dakar, Senegal, protests broke out as Ousmane Sonko, the main opponent to the current Senegalese president, was imprisoned. Senegalese people are protesting so that Macky Sall doesn’t run for a third unconstitutional term. The protests were violently quashed by the police, and multiple restrictions have been placed on social media by the government. #FreeSenegal

This is an interview Jana Hunter in the early stages of their music career. Jana is a non-binary indie acoustic/folk musician based in Baltimore and the founder of the band Matty and Mossy. Hunter was signed to Gnomonsong, a record label run by Devendra Banhart and Vetiver’s Andy Cabic. Hunter’s solo debut album Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom was the label’s debut release. In 2007 Hunter founded an independent record label based in Houston, Texas, Feow! Records, with musicians Matthew Brownlie of Bring Back the Guns and Arthur Bates of Houston band Wicked Poseur.

“Legend” is a word that is often too lightly doled out, but today we proudly present an interview with a bonafide LEGEND. Art Laboe is a broadcasting icon who was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2012. This honor was rightly bestowed as he was the first DJ to play Rock and Roll on the west coast airwaves, smashed color lines by presenting mixed race concerts and playlists, coined the term “Oldies but Goodies,” invented the concept of the compilation album and continues to bring joy to generations of radio listeners.

At 87 years young, Art is a sprightly figure, holding one of the top rated slots in Southern California radio, one of the world’s most important markets. He graces the airwaves six nights a week with his Art Laboe Connection program. The show’s format is an exception amongst commercial radio, emphasizing a direct connection with the community. Throughout each show he takes dedications from listeners and sends their songs and kisses over the airwaves to loved ones, many of whom are incarcerated. His radio show is a pipeline through which the emotions and wishes of listeners are transmitted. The songs heard on the Art Laboe Connection are a refreshing and heartfelt break from the glossy buzz flooding much of the dial. While Art plays tried and trued favorites every show his playlist varies widely night to night based on to listener requests and his mood. On any given episode you’re likely to hear rare doo-wop, R&B or sweet soul cuts played nowhere else.

We were honored that Art Laboe opened up his studio and schedule to graciously allow us this interview. Scholar and dublab board member Josh Kun sat down with Art at his Original Sound Studio on Sunset Boulevard to revisit the history of his illustrious career and explore the dynamic of his nightly connection with listeners cruising the California streets or listening close for the voice of a loved one.

Wall Matthews, founding member of The Entourage Music and Theater Ensemble beamed into Celsius Drop to shine light on the obscure yet impactful group’s history. Formed in 1970, Entourage performed long form sets fusing varied sonic elements into their own unidentifiable genre. Weaving together modern dance, poetry, lighting design and flowing sound they created immersive, dream-state environments. The group released two critically acclaimed recordings on Folkways, a 1973 self-titled album followed by The Neptune Collection in 1975, famously sampled by Four Tet on his song “She Moves She”.

Entourage’s sole surviving member Wall Matthews, carries the light forward by honoring the group’s heritage and reviving its innovative spirit through performance. He recently oversaw the Tompkins Square Records album Ceremony of Dreams : Studio Sessions & Outtakes, 1972-1977, a collection of 30 previously unreleased archival tracks. Enjoy this interview with Wall Matthews including a mix of Entourage songs he personally selected and sequenced. What a treat for us, having musician/composer/pioneer Manuel Göttsching up to dublab soon after his first ever performance in Los Angeles. We totally geeked out about analog electronics, his forward-thinking uses of them in the legendary German experimental rock group Ashra Tempel in the 70’s, his experiences creating the E2-E4 piece in the early 80’s (which became a monumental inspiration in the development of late 80’s/early 90’s house music in the U.S.), the cryptic Cosmic Jokers project and so much more. He hasn’t stopped working either, moving into sound installations and film soundtracks. We knew he was a heavy dude but sheesh…

Subhumans are one of the most influential bands from the UK Anarcho-Punk scene of the 80’s, filed right alongside Crass and Conflict, and just as relevant today as they were during the darkest days of Thatcher’s Britain. Take your choice in how to label them – Punk, UK82, Crusty, etc, – there lies the attraction and consequent reason for their popularity, the band epitomizes non-conformity and connects with people in many different scenes.

Launched during the thick of the Covid Pandemic, the Floating series was just what Los Angeles needed—an invitation to come outside and hear the city in new ways. Through a weekly series of roving soundscapes and soundbaths activated in unique and natural spaces, the Floating collective have opened up Angelenos’ ears and spirits to the wonders of the environments around them.

Brian Eno and Beatie Wolfe talk Art and Climate on dublab for this Orange Juice for the Ears special that marks Earthday 2022. Their conversation was recorded live in Austin where it was SXSW’s Featured Session for the day art/climate converged.

As one of the pioneers of American electronic music from his earliest self-released cassette in 1977 up through his 2021 Beyond Earth & Sky collaboration with Steve Roach, Stearns creates engaging textures melding with soaring melodies. He has created music for NASA, Laserium, Disney Films, HBO, 20/20 and the Berkshire Ballet. His award-winning scores for Ron Fricke’s non-verbal global film masterpieces Chronos, Sacred Site, Baraka and Samsara have been heard by audiences around the world. Stearns creates at his The Guest House studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

This year marks the rerelease of Stearns’ groundbreaking and long out-of-print Planetary Unfolding (1981). Featuring the sound of the Serge Modular Synthesizer in 6 movements, the slowly evolving atmospheric swirls of this early spacemusic classic are a journey within inner and outer space.

Chances are pretty good we don’t have to explain who Tangerine Dream are. You already knew they’ve been cemented in the annals of pioneering electronic music for their mastery of transportational soundscapes, crafted from the early 70’s on. Perhaps behind only Pink Floyd or the Grateful Dead are they considered universally as the quintessential stoned-with-headphones experience. Well, founder Edgar Froese never really stopped creating. 40+ years later Froese and his current band-mates aren’t hauling the same humongous walls of modular analog synths on the road with them, but they are on the road. In July 2012, they played the 2,300 person-capacity Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

We won’t lie. It wasn’t exactly easy to arrange this interview. After much rescheduling and thumb-twiddling we were ushered backstage into Edgar’s velvety dressing room nearly an hour before the venue’s doors were to open. His friendly assistant asked if we could keep it to 10 minutes. Sure that seemed tight, but we were happy to do whatever. Then Edgar proceeded to bleed the history of the band all over us, in a super-relaxed manner, as if he had all day.

Alan Vega’s Mutator out now on Sacred Bones

The visual artist, musician, and poet Alan Vega was born in Brooklyn in 1938. He co-founded the massively influential avant-garde band Suicide with Martin Rev in 1970, with whom he performed off and on throughout his life. Vega would go on to have a prolific career as a solo artist. His hit song “Jukebox Babe” led to a contract with Elektra Records, who released two albums including the cult classic Saturn Strip, produced by Ric Ocasek. From there, rejecting the commercial machine, he went back to his roots, doing a deep dive into experimenting with sound in the studio. This era resulted in new solo records coming out consistently throughout the next several decades; starting with Deuce Avenue, continuing through Dujang Prang (on Henry Rollins’ 2.13.61 imprint), and culminating with his masterpiece It. Vega considered the albums from this period the audio counterpoint to his visual art that reflected the world around him while simultaneously delving into universal themes. It makes his work as relevant today as it was then.

It was during this period that he began working with Liz Lamere, who became his wife and the most crucial collaborator of his solo career. Lamere, along with fellow Vega collaborator Jared Artaud, discovered in 2019 the lost Vega album, Mutator, which they co-produced and mixed. Along with creative director Michael Handis, they are now spearheading the Alan Vega Vault project, which aims to bring rare and unreleased work from throughout Vega’s career to the public for the first time.

Mutator was recorded with Lamere at Vega’s NYC studio from 1995-1996, and it serves as a document of a particularly fertile time in his creative life. He had 11 full-length solo albums come out during the ‘80s, ’90s and ‘00s — plus numerous collaborations, and Suicide records: A Way of Life, Why Be Blue and American Supreme. Mutator wasn’t shelved intentionally, but Vega’s back-to-the-grindstone M.O. meant that he had moved on to making his next record before this one was finished.

At the time of the Mutator sessions, Vega was massively inspired by what was happening in the streets of New York — not only the hip hop scenes that were exploding throughout the outer boroughs, but also the literal sounds of the streets, the traffic noise and industrial ambience of city living. That influence trickled into the sounds he and Lamere captured in those sessions. That sensibility, paired with Vega’s unmistakable voice and force of personality, is what made it the great album it is now. The final piece was the production job, completed by Lamere and Artaud 25 years after the songs were first captured.

One of the most inspired of producer Adrian Sherwood’s many collaborations is the early-’80s dub project New Age Steppers – a loosely-configured collective of British and Jamaican musicians that primarily centered on Sherwood’s studio alchemy and the distinctive singing of Slits vocalist Ari Up. The project mixes up bright reggae songs and experimental zoners and helped pave the way for the most adventurous sounds of the ’80s and ’90s. Sherwood went on to work with Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Lee Scratch Perry, Sly & Robbie, KMFDM, Cabaret Voltaire, and many others.

This year marks the reissue of all four New Age Steppers releases, along with the odds-and-ends package Avant Gardening, in a single package titled Stepping Into a New Age 1980-2021 on Sherwood’s storied label On-U Sounds.

John Girgus from the bands Aberdeen, Languis & Legendary House Cats had the opportunity to “interview” John Cooper Clarke for dublab. Here is what he had to say:

What hasn’t already been said about the great John Cooper Clarke? What already hasn’t been asked? More in the UK, but here to a degree, there has been no recent shortage of interviews with the original Punk Poet. So instead of a safe and formal interview, the idea was to try a get a more informal banter, something maybe any sensible fan would do if given the opportunity.

What I was admittedly a little too nervous to convey at the start of this phone call from the man who’s works span five decades, was that I grew up an inherent fan of punk, post-punk, more importantly big hair and black jeans (values I hold dear to this day). I thought I had most of Manchester’s major exports covered… Maybe partly due to the fact that he wasn’t really making records for the period I began buying them, I completely missed him. So when the the black clad mess of hair and shades graced the screen for the 2007 Joy Division biopic, ‘Control’ later on, I was an instant fan. The look and the style adopted by the icons of my formative years with intelligence and realism to which I can still relate. And I laughed at least every minute. Everything I have ever heard anybody say since, proven true in that moment. I Googled clumsy terms ‘spoken word control joy div’, and found handfuls of stray mp3s, videos, but even eBay could be scant. I listened to what I could find, and as they say, when you met someone who knew, they knew…

By then, from what must surely be a mix of pure will, luck, raw talent, and a great PR team, the poet was enjoying a full renaissance at home and recognition as a national treasure. He’s on tests, talk shows, and the Arctic Monkeys turned on of his well-known pieces into a #1 chart hit, and plays the Royal Albert Hall. Last year, when his first US visit in my lifetime touched down at Downtown LA bar La Cita (a place I’ve DJed) it was nothing short of a miracle. Lucky for us, that turned out not only to be a one time occurrence, and with an 11 date US tour, dublab’s Alejandro thought for some reason, the two of us might have an interesting conversation. After nearly chickening out (pun so intended), I instead just dialed the number with a degree of fearlessness deserved by someone who used to open punk shows with nothing but a microphone. A graciously casual conversation from the rackety Mob Museum in Las Vegas followed… I really couldn’t have hoped for a nicer legend to get the chance to chat with.

To coincide with the opening of the Mixing Colors Installation at Jerry Moss Plaza at The Music Center in Los Angeles & the announcement of ‘A Quiet Scene: LA’ film project in collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon, dublab welcomes Brian Eno and Roger Eno to it’s airwaves for a special interview hosted by Liz Warner about the Mixing Colours + A Quiet Scene projects.

Inspired by the Enos’ Mixing Colours project, the installation will feature 100+ short films to be shown daily at Jerry Moss Plaza at The Music Center in Los Angeles from 8:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. (PST) from January 22 – February 21, 2021. The experience will transform Jerry Moss Plaza into a tranquil and meditative space. Visitors can enjoy the short films and ambient, soothing music from a safe outdoor location. This installation is free and open to the public. Masks and social distancing are required.

A Quiet Scene: L.A. is a free film project and screening initiative that encourages professional and amateur filmmakers alike to create a short original film that is an authentic reflection of Los Angeles during current times. Each short film should use one of the seven tracks featured on Roger and Brian Eno’s Luminous EP as its soundtrack and will be evaluated based on interpretation of “a quiet scene,” interpretation of Los Angeles, and creativity and originality of the work. Production quality and value will also be taken into consideration.

A Quiet Scene: L.A. provides a Los Angeles perspective to the highly successful 2020 public audio-visual project—A Quiet Scene—created by Deutsche Grammophon and the Eno brothers in 2020 in support of their Mixing Colours album; this program featured short scenes shot by people from their newly found confined spaces at home in the first wave of the global pandemic.

The competition/screening project is presented by The Music Center, Los Angeles’ performing arts center, and dublab, a community supported radio station based on Los Angeles, and in collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon.

San Cha is a singer-songwriter, based in the City of Angels, increasingly known for her visceral and explosive live performances. Her name, derived from the Spanish word sancha, which translates to ‘mistress’, is a mischievous reference to the title of ‘San’, given to male saints in the Catholic tradition. Fans of cumbia and punk, bolero and electro, flock to see San Cha’s emotional renditions of traditional Mexican rancheras and original songs that are queer conventions of identity, power and love. Her latest album, La Luz De La Esperanza is written in the form of a surrealist telenovela and sounds like what Pitchfork described as ‘modernized ranchera with a rock edge and goth sensibility’. Effortlessly mixing Spanish and English, La Luz De La Esperanza calls for a bold confrontation of tradition while respectfully honoring it.

Matt Black of the pioneering electronic band Coldcut stopped by dublab in 2000 for a far reaching talk with Mark “Frosty” McNeill. He also performed a short set to demonstrated the sampling software they created and used for their live shows. The band integrated this technique along with live video sampling to create a set that was groundbreaking and unique for its time. Along with producing tracks with a storied list of collaborators, including the Eurythmics, Steve Reich, Queen Latifah, and The Fall, touring, and recording, Coldcut also started their own label, Ninja Tune. Rhythm and Blues hero, Big Jay McNeely, was famous for whipping audiences into a frenzy. Known as the King of the Honkin’ Sax, his guttural, brassy blasts coupled with an intense onstage presence blew down walls the world over. McNeely’s hits on wax were equally potent. 1949’s “The Deacon’s Hop” is a lasting R&B instrumental and 1959’s “There Is Something on Your Mind” can eternally be found in cars cruising low and slow.

In 2001, our friends at Canongate Books presented a concert with Gil Scott-Heron in Scotland. Jamie Byng from Canongate was a longtime friend and supporter of Scott-Heron. In this recording, Scott-Heron exudes a sense of comfort from performing in the company of friends, including the percussionist Larry McDonald. Mark McNeill welcomed MJ Lallo onto his show Celsius Drop for some conversation and cosmic cruising. Working as a voice over artist for NASA and the Vatican Observatory, Lallo created soundtracks for the swirling stars of the Milky Way. These space fueled explorations were only part of her pioneering experiments into creating compositions with her voice and early effects processors.
