How we own things, how we possess things, how we accumulate things is a common practice. We get to survive the moment, to enhance the moment, and to save the moment, but that's all very common.

God calls us to something more, to be UNCOMMON with our treasure. To create spaces and occasions that honor God and help others.

God tends to talk in binaries regarding our relationships with others. Wives and husbands, children, and parents. God also talks about the boss and employee relationship in the book of Ephesians.

This week we are discussing how to approach our jobs in a Christ-honoring way. The good jobs, the bad jobs, the temporary jobs, the job searches, etc. We want to explore what Jesus says about our work because it matters to Him. We want to be set apart as employees and bosses and bring about the Kingdom of God in our workforces.

When we keep using the same resources to fix the same reoccurring issues in our live, the problems are not only repeated, but the ineffective solutions are also. Same status quo problems, same status quo solutions, same status quo lives. But calls us to more. He calls us to be 'of Him.' To walk and follow Christ and to become of His way.

The way that lives with UNCOMMON compassion, UNCOMMON character, and UNCOMMON courage. Today we take a look at UNCOMMON relationships and the number one thing that will get in the way of having them, how we think about ourselves.

We were created out of mission, with a mission. To 'be fruitful and multiply'. To make spaces of flourishing. As image bearers, created to live out God's mission. Living with mission is one of the ways we express the image of God. But the mission becomes even better when it becomes UnCommon. Whether it's with your family, or your workplace, or any relationship, God wants you to bring UnCommon Hope and Compassion to your world, in the midst of your story, no matter what the chapters hold and what's yet to be written.

Up until the 1500's, the common view of the universe was that the Earth was the center of the Universe. Along comes Nicolaus Copernicus, mathematician and astronomer, who formulates that Sun is the center of the known Universe and that the Earth and the other Planets revolved around it. Followed by Edwin Hubble and his renown telescope which showed that we're not only not the center of our solar system, our solar system is not even the center of our galaxy. Carl Sagan then writes book entitled Pale Blue Dot based upon a Hubble Telescope image of Earth taken Feb. 14, 1990, by NASA’s Voyager 1 at a distance of 3.7 billion miles (6 billion kilometers) from the Sun, which leads us all to the face that Earth is not the center of the universe, and that, as observers, we don't occupy a special place.

But it turns out, there is something better than being the center of the universe, and that's being a place where LIFE HAPPENS. Because in actuality, there are an astronomical number of things that had to be just right for any kind of life to happen on Earth. Clear atmosphere. The moon being just the right size and distance. Our position in the galaxy. The mass and composition of the sun. The habitable zone we occupy. Oxygen in appropriate the range. The internal heating of the planet. Plate tectonics to make magnetic field possible. A magnetic field to shield from charged particle radiation. Moderate axis tilt and the right size moon to maintain the tilt. Just to name a few.

Because ultimately, it is not your position on the earth that defines you. It is your position in Christ that not only defines you, but also brings flourishing.

We have been called to live beyond the Common. To be a kind of people that organizes our hearts and thoughts with God's thoughts. As we continue in our UNCOMMON series, we do so by focusing on Character.

Character is like a mini-culture within you. It is your personal culture of values, passions, ethics, morals, and modalities of relationship. The common structure of character comes from your family, your society, your behavioral predispositions, but for the Christian, we are called to the UNCOMMON character of God.

A.W. Tozer once said "what comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”

Our status quo looks different than God’s. His status quo is “otherly.” The Bible uses a very controversial word to describe this strange status quo - HOLY. I encourage you to strip away all those preconceptions of the word Holy and let’s get back to the basics. Holy means “otherly, different”. It implies the opposite of things common.

God is Holy. He is different from us. Isaiah 6:3 says, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” His character is always good, just, honorable, and loving. His motives are always pure. He defines morality itself, and it is perfect. But as corrupted, imperfect beings, our characters are not always good, just, honorable, and loving. So when we compare the status quo of our lives and the status quo of God, we should find a different status quo than that of the world. I know my motives are not always pure, and I could never define perfect morality. So while we are made in God’s image, the holiness of God is one of those attributes that set us apart from Him. Or at least it did. But the story doesn’t end there.

Through the Cross of Christ and embracing a relationship with Him, He has now called us Holy. He has invited us to live differently. Through our relationship with Jesus, we have been given the holy position. God challenges us to a life of differentness because we are no longer commoners of this world. Rules of dos and don’ts do not restrict us. We are called to represent Him by being different. Uncommon. Set apart. He has called us holy through Jesus.

“This is it,” we declare, “this is the Christianity I will settle for.” Sure we go to church, but our lives look the same as the atheists.” Our parenting is identical to those who don’t follow Jesus. We have our “salvation stamp,” but the world’s solutions solve the problems of our lives, not God’s solutions for life. Maybe we were baptized at 14 years old and never missed a Sunday, but we still watch the same TV shows as our non-Christian friends. We are still drinking more than we should simply because it’s “what you do,” says the world.

If you put some of us Christians side by side with “the people of the world,” you wouldn’t be able to tell any difference between the two groups. There would be no uncommon Christ-likeness about us. No one would wonder what was different about us in our character and lifestyle. Why? Because we settle for less in our Christian walks. We settle because we don’t want to be weird Christians. We settle because of complacency. We settle because of ignorance. We settle because of disappointment in God. We settle for the common religious experience but then become angry with God because nothing beyond the ordinary ever happens to us. We expect Him to change the state of the earth, but we don’t want Him to give any input into our individual lives. Or, at least, not too much input.

Rather than seeking to be uncommonly Christ-like, we go back to our old source...the world. The world says to be “the best version of yourself.” So we tidy up that ideology and slap a Jesus sticker on it, declaring the idea Biblical. But God called us to live uncommonly, remarkably, set apart, and much more than what we settle for.

Drones are blast to use, but there's always the fear that you could lose it. That the communication could be lost between you and your, sometimes very expensive, piece of equipment. But there's a feature that a lot of good drones have one them called RTH or Return to Home.

Imagine it's nighttime and you're trying to capture the moon over the water in 8k, but there's one problem, you've lost sight of your drone or got confused about the directional orientation of it. All you have to do is push RTH and the drone will automatically rise to a safe height and return to the spot it left from based upon the coordinates it's recorded, even if it's lost contact with the control pad.

In the Christmas story, "rejoicing" is that tether, that RTH mechanism that even when we're lost, reconnects us back to where we came from, back to the one belief, the one idea that gets us home, Jesus. We all have moments when we've felt lost, alone or abandoned, but the question for ua today is, what is our RTH? Is it found in Jesus or is it tethered to things that much like the season of Christmas, will fade?

The story of Mary and Joseph is often times overly romanticized as a story without conflict and struggle. A story where everything worked out just like it was supposed to. A story where the miraculous virgin birth was just a part of the good times they were experiencing as Jesus’ earthly parents.

In actuality, things didn’t work out that way at all. There was murder in their story. There was running in their story. Their was death in their story. And there still is for us today. But as we’ll discover, following the plan of God in our lives and trusting Him with it, though it may at times not be what we envisioned, is the only way the something better of His kingdom can flourish in our lives.

One of the best parts of this time of year is seeing all the inflatable decorations of cartoon characters past and present in peoples yards as you drive around town. But have you ever noticed that when they deflate they it can be a little scary, especially once they’re inflated again and all the things that lay lifeless now start to take on shape, slowly, and sometimes to the terror of young children watching it happen?

How we view God is sometimes done much in the same way. We see certain aspects of Him and reject it or run before the whole thing is blown up to its actual inflated beauty and intention. Welcome to our journey through the gospel of Luke where we are learning about the Certainty of the life, mission, and message of Jesus. Over the past few weeks we've seen the challenge He presents to us in following Him, but today we're going to take a moment to discover what He thinks about us.

Join us today as we journey through Luke 15 and discover that though our certainty in this life is found in Him, there is also one thing that's certain about how He sees us, with an unrivaled love that meets us right where we are.

Last week we talked about being Certain about Jesus. Jesus, with charity and clarity laid out what that relationship was to be shaped like. A certainty response to Jesus called for action ‘towards’ Him. Today, we are going to see that certainty response to Jesus includes action ‘towards’ people. Action that shifts the load of another person onto our animal. That receives mercy to give mercy. This is the kingdom Jesus so desires His people to be a part of and it’s what we’re invited to today.

To mince words means to speak vaguely or indirectly about a subject or to speak in a way that avoids conflict and solicits approval. It's something we've all done at one point or another to avoid a situation we don't want to be in or not get cancelled, but as we'll see today, when it comes to things that really matter, clarity is charity.

It's how Jesus spoke with those who followed Him, where mincing His words would have been easier and arguably more profitable for His ministry, but He chose to speak with clarity out of His great love for them, and the language, and challenge, remains the same for us today. Will we continue to expect God to bless our minced obedience? Or will we repent, and follow Him with our whole-heart and mind and bring Heaven to earth right here and now.

If we want to look into the future with a sense of confidence and hope, it must be built upon something reliable, something certain. Such was the case for the men who lowered the paralytic down through the roof to be healed by Jesus. Several years ago technology made a huge advancement by providing a piece of equipment that would all make our lives easier, or at least it was supposed to, it was called the Roomba. As we quickly learned though, it mostly navigated based upon a bump into stuff and hopefully not fall off the stairs to it’s doom approach. But as the technology advanced, so too has its mapping system which allows the device to do it’s job more quickly and efficiently with far less time getting stuck on cliffs and under chairs.

Much like the Roomba, the more certain you are about God and Jesus, the more effectively you can move throughout the spaces of your life. For God wants each of our stories to be remapped and filled with the confidence that comes through certainty in Him. Certainty about who we are, about Jesus can do, and about who we can trust when we lose what’s certain around us.

When we think about blessings and curses, most of us rely on past usages of the word. Blessings tend to fall into the realm of happiness or pleasure (more money, more expensive vacations, parking spots close to the door, etc.), while curses tend to fall into the realm of wands and spells (dark arts, ill intent from the spiritual realm, the devil, etc.). But as we'll discover today, they have less to do with that and more to do with whether or not we'll choose to interact with the plotline of God in our life or impede its flourishing power.

Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. Most of us remember the scientific classification, or taxonomy, in which we categorize all living things. It’s a part of the fabric in which we live, all the way from the largest creatures down to smallest ones we can barely see under the most powerful of microscopes.

Is it possible that this reality, in which no one would dismiss as irrational, is a shadow of one present in the spiritual world as well? Could this possibly be found in the One that is out of creation, yet within creation? Could this be found in the One that is beyond the list, is on the list, and created the list, Jesus of Nazareth?

Join us today as we continue our Plotline series by looking at how He flipped the script on what was expected, not just in the physical world, but in the spiritual and how we all can be found by the One who is unrestrained by any category or taxonomy.

Throughout Scripture we see the concept of Temples carried out. From the Garden of Eden, through the life of Jesus, and now into our own lives. But this concept was always meant to be so much more than just an idea, or a phrase we hear uttered. It was meant to transform our lives into the people God made us to be. In Scripture we hear about Old Covenants and New Covenants, about believing in God, but there is so much more that we have been invited to and that’s Covenant Lordship Partnership.

It’s not a broad brush concept that universally includes everyone, though it universally invites everyone. It’s not simply affirming a list of agreed upon beliefs. It’s not something we drift in and out of based upon our behavior or something we use as an excuse to do whatever we want. It’s entering in to partnership with God. Something that was made possible through Christ, and only through Him, even to broken, mistake prone people like us. That’s why Jesus is such a big deal! For through Him we’re invited into the covenant of God’s family! Into fellowship with Him in an unbreakable partnership with love, forgiveness, truth, and encouragement each and every day. Have you ever wondered why the Bible seems to always be filled with killing things and blood? From the Old Testament, all the way through the death of Christ, it seems to be a pretty big trend in Scripture, but why? Well as we'll learn today, there are few plot lines more powerful, that give us more hope in the midst of a fallen world than the plot line of atonement.

Though we all contribute to the problem of evil in some way, God's solution of atonement screams in the midst of the plot line of history, in the middle of our story, that with God, we have a better one.

This series is about reconnecting to the plotlines of God’s story for us. We will look at stories, events, and ideas that all make up the story of God and His good plan for our lives. We will be partnering with the Tim Mackey and Jon Collins from the Bible Project to help bring these concepts and stories closer for our understanding.

So today we are going to start with an overview look of the plotline of Eternal Life. It's a concept most of us have always combined with life after death or Heaven. But really, it is something we can be a part of right now. Being aware that we live in an age is so important. An age is a period of time with some common attributes that remains constant or more so, that we can live in two overlapping ages.

I think we all are aware of the age of humankind. History tells us the stories of our activity on the planet, but we all experience smaller expressions of this idea of ‘common attributes’ in our lifetime. Just think about, we have seen a lot of different ‘age’ fashions. 1950’s through today. All kinds of trends and fashions, for a short time, emerge and help define that time. We are all born into this age of mankind and likewise experience the ‘common attributes’. Challenges, hopes, cultural values, pain, loss. But it is so important to see and be aware of the contrast between the age of mankind and the eternal life-age that God invites us to.

The story of Adam and Eve wanting an Age that is defined by them is so alive today. But God is inviting us to so much more. Jesus says it this way in John 10:7-10:

“I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

Scripture later reiterates this in 1 John 2:17: "And the world and its cravings are passing away, but the person who does the will of God remains forever."

See, we are invited to live in an age, that overlaps this world, but goes on in perfect love, truth, and goodness and it's something that we can all too easily forget. We get bogged down, we fail to see anything beyond our current circumstances, we live afraid and if we're honest, probably all want to return to some other age.

Scripture speaks to this when Jesus says in Matthew 6:

“Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

The challenge for us is that we need to realize that Jesus is greater than the Age we live in. As Paul states in Ephesians 1:18-21:

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.”

But then we must realize that we are now a part of a new age, Life unto the Age. We still experience the age events of mortality, but we are ‘seated’ in the Eternal age of God, which is a HUGE concept for us to understand. It will change how we look at events around us and it should affect how we live now. For when we see that we are part of something that is ‘forever good’, it changes how we live in a place that is ‘frequently bad’.

See, eternal life is not so much a measure of time but a statement of quality. We don’t live to please God to get it, we live to please God because we have been given it!. So, are you a part of ‘Life Unto the Age’? Are you stuck with your head down? Are you trying to live this age on your terms? Seizing life for yourself, living only for this age. Are you trying to go back to a past age? Or are you living as if the kingdom of Heaven is right here and now?

Jesus calls us to ABIDE. Abide in His story, abide in His words, abide in His promises, abide in His empowerment, abide in His example, abide in His principles and abide in His mission. These things are so essential to Jesus, they become the faithful things we ABIDE in.

When we think about abiding in the mission of Christ, we tend to think of Christianizing the world. It’s easy for us to think the mission of Christ is to rid the earth of addiction, racism, abortion, sexual compromise, greed, poverty, and [along the way] save the planet. Those are cool and good agendas, but there is so much more to ABIDE. There is so much more to MISSION. The mission of Christ is not the establishing of a world religion, it may have parts of that, but Jesus summarized it this way: “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” Luke 10:27. His mission very much involves where I am directing my heart, my action, and mind! And as we conclude our series, we'll focus on that last area, the mind.

Scripture speaks of being ‘mindful’ in a holy mindful way:

David said: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14.

Isaiah said: “Those of steadfast mind you keep in peace— in peace because they trust in you.” Isaiah 26:3.

Paul said: “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus…” Philippians 2:5 “To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.”

Romans 8:6 “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:4–7.

Peter said: “Prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 1:13.

It’s time to take our minds back to the mission of God, to being mindful of the Mission of Christ in all things and that involves ‘mindfulness’. It’s not just knocking on doors or handing out tracks, but it could involve that. It’s not just serving at the soup kitchen and then heading back to the suburbs with a good feeling, but it could involve that. It’s not just traveling to other regions of the world for a week and building houses… but it could involve that. It begins with the remapping of our minds with His mission. It's involves thinking differently about power. Thinking differently about possessions. Thinking differently about purity. Thinking differently about people. Thinking differently about persecution.

It involves us having a mind that sees mission in every experience, not just with our kindness (acting missionally – responding in the moment), but beyond that, with us being thoughtful (thinking missionally – creating future moments and spaces for kindness to happen.)

You see, being missionally minded is not just the ‘answer in the moment’, it is the mindfulness and thoughtfulness to create future moments of encounters with God. It's in a conversation at the coffee shop. It's right there as we tuck our little one in with a prayer at night. It's choosing to end a conversation that has turned septic. It's giving more to the needs of someone who just lost their job. It's spending less time celebrating yourself and more time celebrating others. It's seeking righteousness and purity with God in the hidden spaces. It's what Jesus said the world needs, and it's what He's called us to be.

Jesus calls us to abide in His story and in His words above all the other stories that are a part of our lives and the words that have been spoken about us, but how do we continue to do that on a day in day out basis? How do we know when we've begun to abide in another story or allow words that are spoken over us to shout louder than the voice of God? The answer lies in the next area we're called to abide in, and that's His empowerment, specifically the power of the Holy Spirit.

He's not a what, He's not a power, He's not an energy or some other cosmic goo, nor is He merely a symbol or an "it." He is God and He is someone, that as a believer in Christ, not only reveals the truth of God to us, but the sin that easily holds us back, all the while pointing to Christ, the author and perfector of our faith. The question for us is, will we tap into the incredible power that's been offered to us, or will we keep the check in our back pocket?

We learned last week that we abide in Jesus’ story over others because He is supreme in our MCU. He is the George Lucas of our Star Wars. He is the author and most powerful character in our story, no matter what’s been a part of it or what will be. Today we take that truth and zoom in even further by focusing on abiding in His words, more specifically, valuing His over every other thing that’s being spoken to us. For no matter what episode of life we’re in, an opinion is being spoken to us by someone, the question is, where’s the volume of that in relation to the life giving words of Christ?

Last week we learned that Jesus is a better story than many of the others we’re tempted to abide in and in the end, it’s only out of His story that we better understand, better fulfill, and have a better ending to our own. But the question is, why abide in His words? Why abide in His story when there are so many other stories we can follow? The answer lies in where we rank Jesus amongst the other stories. Is He just another character similar to something we find in the MCU or Star Wars? Or is He something so much more? Join us today as we explore who Jesus really is and why He is the better story we can abide in.

Working the System. It's a phrase that can have positive and negative connotations. Most of the time it’s used in a negative light and as we learned last week, it can be true of our approach to Christianity where Jesus can become more of an idea to be implemented, rather than a person to be followed.

As we continue our series this week, we take a look at the way Jesus describes a healthy understanding of the relationship system, and that’s through abiding. For christians it’s almost a cliche’ term, but as we’ll discover today, Jesus is a better story than many of the others we’re tempted to abide in and in the end, it’s only out of His story that we better understand, better fulfill, and have a better ending to our own.

Working the System. It's a phrase that can have positive and negative connotations. We use it in business, investments, politics, college, and even our approach to Christianity. We have systems in place that say things like "real Christians don't drink," or "you can't be an evolutionist and be a Christian," or "real Christians don't get depressed" and so on and so forth, but as we learned today, Jesus is not a system to be worked, He is someone to be followed.

Over the course of this series we’ve been learning a lot about air-flight, specifically the turbulence that we experience as a part of it. Today we shift our focus to frontal-wave turbulence. This type of turbulence is the result of the lifting of warm air by cold air, which is heavier and denser. As air rises it expands and cools losing its ability to hold moisture, as a result, a band of clouds and precipitation form along a cold front, producing abrupt wind shifts and significant turbulence.

This is exactly the type of turbulence Jesus caused during his earthly ministry. He came in like a cold front and flipped the tables on the culture he was a part of and the expectations they had for who the Messiah should be. But this isn’t just an example of a story that happened back then, it’s something we experience today as well. It may not have been us who yelled “crucify him!'“ but how often do we find ourselves crucifying Him in our hearts when our expectations of Him aren’t met? Join us today as we take an honest look at our expectations and in how in releasing them to Him and opening our eyes to His kingdom we can see Him do abundantly more than we ever thought possible.

Over the course of this series we’ve been learning a lot about air-flight, specifically the turbulence that we experience as a part of it. Today we look at a different type of turbulence that correlates perfectly with our faith, mountain-wave turbulence.

This type of turbulence is the result of wind passing over the mountains which, in turn, creates vortexes and standing wave walls that can be particularly dangerous for underpowered aircraft. It doesn't matter how high or low the mountain range is, or how young or old it may be, they all create turbulence and here’s the thing, they’ve been doing that for awhile, far before our time, and will continue to do it long after we’re gone. The choice for us is will we let the mountains be the end of our journey. Because we all have things in our lives that pre-date us or situations that have become mountainous, whether it’s culturally or something we’ve been born with or into, but through Christ and the principles and promises he’s given to us, we’re able to rise above them and fly.

As we learned last week, of all the things that unnerve us about flying, it's the turbulence that affects us the most. But we also learned that even though it may feel otherwise, the wings are not going to fall off. The faith correlation for this reality is massive for us because even though we have turbulence in our lives, God is able to protect us through the journey...as long as we are in the fuselage of relationship with him, on the plane He's flying.

Join us today as we focus on arguably the largest area of turbulence in each of our lives, self-induced turbulence. This type is the one we stir up ourselves, the one we have, as a species, historically been able to churn up rather easily. But as we will discover today, whether the self-induced turbulences of anxiety, compromise, or unforgiveness have caused our lives to seem out of control, we're not alone and our flights don't have to end there.

One of the biggest fears of flying in an airplane is turbulence. It’s not just the spills it causes. It’s not just the physical discomfort it causes. It causes speculation to ensue. What’s going on? Can the pilot handle this? Are we going to have to turn around or make an emergency landing? And the big one, are the wings going to fall off?

It's an inevitable part of flying in an airplane, but it's also an inevitable part of life. Whether it's at 15,000 feet or on the ground, turbulence is with us each and every day, but as we discover through this powerful metaphor, the good news for us as children of God, is that even though we will experience all kind of different turbulences along the way, as long as we're in Christ, on the airplane He's designed and is piloting, the wings aren't coming off.

As we've learned throughout the course of this series, the way you think determines the way you feel and the way you feel determines the way you act. So much so, that if you want to change something in your life that you don’t like, you don’t start with your actions, you don’t even start with your feelings, you start with your thoughts.

Today as we conclude our Transformed series, we do so by looking at the story of Jacob, a man who wrestled with God, was wounded, but came out blessed and with a new identity. Though Jacob’s story reads more like a scene from a marvel movie, it is in fact the journey for the believer. The only question for us is, will we leave changed or exit the moment when it gets too difficult? Will we take these seven principles, throw out the ones we don’t like and keep the ones we do? Or like Jacob, will we have the power to endure with patience, the power to endure with joy? That’s the transformed life.

In America we believe a lot of things about our jobs and we put a lot of pressure on getting something out of them. We believe it should benefit us financially, we believe it should make us happy, and in some cases, we believe it should be the thing we're most passionate about. Unfortunately when we don't meet those metrics we live with a sense of unfulfillment and disappointment that morphs to animosity.

We may go from job to job, city to city, uprooting our families in pursuit of the perfect job situation, the perfect boss, or the perfect work to pleasure ratio. But what if instead of constantly looking at what we can get out of our jobs, we instead focused on what we can BRING to our jobs? What if we were the kind of people that did excellent work out of the love we have for God, no matter the situation? What if we were the kind of people that brought heaven into our jobs, rather than hell? What if we were the kind of people that weren't focused on being "great" in how the world defines it, but simply good and faithful servants? The kingdom of heaven might just come to earth...

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” As we learned last week, the key to transformation starts not in your actions, not in your behavior, not in your body, it starts with your thoughts. For how we think determines how we feel, and how we feel determines how we act.

As part of our 8 weeks of Transformation, we spend time this week looking at renewal through physical health. Specifically the impact that stress is having in all of our lives and the challenge it presents to the renewal of our minds. For as Proverbs 14:30 says, “peace of mind makes the body healthy.”

Join us today as Pastor Paul breaks down this idea and how God’s design for rest can lead us into a life of goodness and mercy, in full abundance both in the present and into the future.

The key to transformation starts not in your actions, not in your behavior, not in your body. It starts with your thoughts. As Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

As we learn from the story of the prodigal son, or better titled, the loving father, that renewal, and all of its transformational power, directly correlates to our closeness with God. A closeness that all of us at times struggle to maintain or feel, but a closeness that comes as we get fed up with our lives, own up to our faults, and offer up ourselves to Him.

It's not something that happens overnight, but the great news is, we have a loving Father who waits for us, just as we are, to decide that being closer to Him is better than where we are now.

Our future experiences are, to a degree, dependent on how we live in the moment. The unexpected can always happen, but beyond those instances, we can expect certain outcomes based upon our decisions in the moment that go far beyond wishing and chance.

As Pastor Paul shared with us in this message, we're able to INSPECT to arrive at our EXPECT. Meaning, we're all able to look at the things we're doing, "inspect" them, and then affirm or change them to arrive at our expectation, but we have to be willing to go into the basement, get on the elliptical and do the work in order to be truly transformed.

To “behold” something is different than to merely just “see” it. It goes beyond the mere collection of facts or the observation of an event and speaks into the soul, prompting a response as a catalyst to action. To put it another way, it is an invitational moment established by God where the seeing and implication of what’s being seen, go hand in hand.

There are elements of the BEHOLD of Christmas that get us to notice them. A celestial body moving into place after hundreds of years of foretelling. A virgin woman having a baby. Events such as the birth location being prophesied in advance. The arrival of the mysterious magi. Once you add in all the visitations of angels and shepherds, the behold really takes shape.

But it’s when we look at the heart of the Behold we see what is in it for us. We will probably never stand in a Bethlehem field on a starry night. We will probably never meet prominent wisemen from a foreign country. We will probably never encounter a real virgin with a child. We will probably never own a lot of gold, frankincense, or myrrh, so the Behold for us must be something else. Something that was included with all of that for them, but is just as included for me today, and that's the "Inclusio of Emmanuel."

It's something we use in language all the time where ideas said a different way are part of a greater idea that was expressed. In literary terms it's referred to as an "Inclusio literary device." We see it when Disney World is referred to, for example. When someone mentions they're going there we automatically associate it with Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Epcot, but it's all included in the name Disney World.

Such is the case with the declaration of Emmanuel, where there are things that are inclusio to the BEHOLD of Christ. Things such as Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace, all parts Emmanuel, God is with us, that are as much for us today as they were back then in Bethlehem.

But if we’re honest, the Christmas story and all the implications it brings, can become over familiar to us. We get busy, we forget, and at times we leave it behind. But the good news is this, much like Mary & Joseph went back to get Jesus in the temple, we too can go back and get what we’ve left behind. We too can behold that He is a light of revelation, the glory of His people, and salvation and redemption for all.

To put it another way, it is an invitational moment established by God where the seeing and implication of what’s being seen, go hand in hand.

In the story of the Magi or wise men, we see two behold moments happen, but with different responses to them. The Magi not only observed the moment, but understood the implication of the observation as Jesus as King, Ruler, Shepherd and were willing to make the journey because of it.

Herod was presented with his own behold moment, a moment loaded with the same implications, but was unwilling to make the journey, refusing to be ruled by any other King and seeking instead to kill the Behold of God. In the end he fails, but the challenge is there for us to observe today. Will we just be mere stargazers unwilling to do anything else but observe? Will we be like Herod and try to kill the story in our hearts? Or will we be like the wise men who embraced the behold moment, full of all its implications, and respond with worship.

BEHOLD. Part 1.

Behold is not a word we use often. It doesn’t fit with watching sports, or Halloween. It’s not something we say when we find bacon at the grocery store or casually utter in conversations with out friends. We most of the time just use the word “see".”

But to “behold” something is different than to merely just “see” it. It goes beyond the mere collection of facts or the observation of an event and speaks into the soul, prompting a response as a catalyst to action. To put it another way, it is an invitational moment established by God where the seeing and implication of what’s being seen, go hand in hand. It’s a journey not everyone completes, but to those that do, to those that discover the intention of God within the story, to those who behold the resounding implication of the gift of Jesus, he gives the power to be the very children of God.

As we conclude our Learner, Lover, Leader series, we do so by looking at two leaders that we might not automatically categorize as such. Join us today as we explore the stories of several Old Testament characters. Characters, that if we’re honest, often mirror own stories, and in the end point to a God who’s in the midst of them all, never leaving, nor forsaking us.

Framed. Part 9.

The Royal Gorge Bridge is a marvel of engineering. Built in 1929 for a mere $350,000, it is one of the highest suspension bridges in world. Built into the surrounding granite walls, it is made out of steel and is covered with wood planks. In the 1980’s it was renovated with new cable anchors and suspension rods. And since its opening, park officials estimate that more the 26 million people have visited the bridge. The question is, would you cross it?

See we have a knowledge of the bridge, we then are able, with that knowledge, to intelligently evaluate the data about it, but we’re left with a choice, walk forward or just stand there.

Faith in God operates in the same way and is so important in how frame His trustworthiness. From the story of Exodus, to Peters encounter with Jesus on the water, God has laid the stones to look at and remember that He is indeed worthy of our trust and is inviting us to cross the bridge.

We live in a world of constant threats, most of them hypothetical projections of events that have yet to occur, seeking to stop the good work we’re doing. For Nehemiah, the threats were just as real, just as loud, and happened just as frequently, but he refused to cease in building the wall.

Join us as we see the courage Nehemiah led with to not only continue to do the work, but to protect it.

Framed. Part 8.

From manger to cross, cross to grave, and grave to resurrection, the goodness of God is lived and bled for rest for our souls. Regardless of our experiences, other stories concerning God, and actions of His followers, His intentions towards us are perfect. Perfect with goodness, prefect concerning evil we may experience, perfect when we walk through the shadows, perfect when we face our enemies, and perfect even when we face death itself.

So what about all those other stories in Scripture? What about judgement and justice? And how do we make sense of a good God who is also just? Join us today as we look through the frame of the perfect intentions of God toward us and how his justice, through perfect eyes, is not the opposite of goodness ,but the expression of it.

Distractions and daily discouragement are everywhere. All you need to do is open Facebook or turn on the news for 5 minutes and you’ll find a plethora of different things that can do both for us. For Nehemiah, things weren't much different either in his pursuit of rebuilding the wall. Sure, he didn’t have a phone to worry about, but there were plenty of detractors and surrounding noise that could have caused him to abandon the consecrated work set before him, yet he stood his ground and never came off the wall.

Join us as we continue our journey of discovering how we can become the leaders God desires us to be and how through Jesus, the ground we stand on can be unshaken.

Have you ever seen an image that’s been zoomed so far in on that what it is has become unclear? If not, a quick Youtube search will show you hundreds of things, that in the right perspective we realize immediately what they are, but when hyper focused in on, we lose the clarity we once had. This isn’t just something reserved for an afternoon on Youtube though, it’s something we do with God as well. Join us today as we continue to see how He’s chosen to frame Himself for us and the perspective we can have to see Him rightly.

Nehemiah used the clout of the king to establish his credibility with those around him, but the wall still needed to be built. The materials had been supplied, and the plan was set, but someone still had to do the hard work of constructing it. Join us tonight as we look at the people who made this happen, how they intentionally “set their minds to do the work” that was in front of them and how we have this same call on our lives.

A.W. Tozer said, “what comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” In other words, how we frame God is so important in light of the window through which He’s framed Himself. Join us today as we look at some of the ways we’ve framed Him, correctly or incorrectly, and how the truth may be trapezoidal, not square.

It’s a phrase that sounds right, but as we’ll see, it is a phrase that seeks to reduce the objective standard in the attempt to silence the scream of our own human insufficiencies.
