American Fundraising Foundation and Weiser Strategy Group on Georgia Podcast

Kalley Dunn
American Fundraising Foundation

Kalley Dunn is the Director of Strategic Initiatives for The American Fundraising Foundation. The American Fundraising Foundation (Amfund) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a Platinum rating from Guide Star. It has been serving other nonprofit organizations for over 20 years and has distributed over $33 million for worthy causes.

Each year Amfund’s Board of Directors carefully selects organizations to support through sponsorship of their events.

In recognition of its 20 year anniversary, Amfund unveiled a new logo that includes its signature tree and a Golden Pear. The tree has always stood for growth and deep roots. The newly added golden pear is symbolic of the extra touch that Amfund brings to each of its nonprofit partners.

The history of the pear is extensive and best described as symbolizing wisdom, good health, longevity, and prosperity — all the things Amfund sees in the organizations it serves and the causes each represents.

And behind every golden pear is a great story. It may be the story of a child receiving special literacy assistance, or a woman finding shelter from an abusive relationship or an animal being rescued.

Every time Amfund helps an organization it is helping others. Each person has a “golden pear story” to share. That’s Amfund… The nonprofit with the golden pear

Calvin Gray with T-Mobile Talks Future of 5G on the Georgia Podcast

Atlanta is known as the cradle for wireless communication. In our studio is ‘the man behind the mobile network’. Calvin Gray was the first of four engineering employees for T-Mobile. He will tell us about T-Mobile’s advanced technology, 5G and the future of wireless communications.

Calvin Gray is the Senior Director of Engineering and Operations at T-Mobile and is often known as the “man behind the mobile network.” He fell into the wireless industry by luck in 1984 and moved to Atlanta in the ‘90s, where he became one of the first four engineering employees for T-Mobile. His ingenuity helped to build the very first network site in 1996-97 – long before it was mainstream – and he has since helped the company build 2,300 cell towers and make significant enhancements to local networks ahead of the Super Bowl. To ensure the strength of the network, they enhanced it in a way so that it would cover way more people than T-Mobile currently serves and made it a point to leave the infrastructure in place to continue to serve Atlanta – a game-changer for residents as they prepare for the launch of 5G.

Topics:

You’ve been called the “man behind the mobile network” here in Atlanta. Tell us a bit about your long tenure with T-Mobile. How did you get started? What do you love about working with the company?
You are also an Atlanta resident. How has your work in Atlanta made a difference to your own community?
Tell us a bit about the work your team did to prepare Atlanta for the SuperBowl – and how you ensured the results of that work would remain for residents and visitors?
Why is Atlanta such an important market for T-Mobile?
What is the craziest memory or story you have of working in the field?
The launch of 5G is just around the corner. Can you tell us a bit about what 5G will look like for businesses here in Atlanta? How will it make things easier for consumers?

Health Insurance Alternatives and Well-being Benefits on Georgia Podcast

Robert Steele
My passion is helping companies grow revenue. Taking a company with $600,000 of revenue to a successful close on a $35 million dollar valuation, building the sales for a company with $6 million in revenue to more than $80 million in revenue or designing, building and deploying a product where we were able to license the product for $90 million dollars are the type of projects that excite me.

I have served as President, CEO, Founder and business leader at various companies and bring a record of success and expertise helping craft the strategic vision behind challenging initiatives and high-impact organizations. Creating startups to working with the Fortune 100, I love being the person that makes things happen. I enjoy speaking to groups, mentoring people, being a trusted advisor to other start-ups, writing articles or books on subjects I am passionate about and enjoying the journey we call LIFE!

I excel at transforming innovation into high value businesses, building and developing global organizations, and positioning my companies at the forefront of their category. Beyond expertise, I have an ability to get things done regardless of the internal or market challenge-this highly driven leadership style consistently inspires standout contributions from top-performing teams.

Veronica Twombly, Head of Small Business Communications at Facebook on Georgia Podcast

Facebook brought its global Boost with Facebook event back to Atlanta and the event was a huge success. Facebook welcomed over 1,500 Atlanta community members to the Southern Exchange Ballroom and kicked off the two-day digital skills training event to empower small-business owners with the tools and resources they need to build their business.

While at the event we interviewed Veronica Twombly, Head of Small Business Communications at Facebook.

Facebook is excited bring Boost with Facebook back to Atlanta.

There are more than 1 million small businesses in Georgia.

99.7 percent of companies based here have fewer than 500 employees

94.1 percent have less than 50

As part of our pledge to train 1 million small business owners and individuals by 2020, we want to make sure each and every one of them has the tools and tactics to succeed in today’s competitive marketplace.

When we spoke to the Georgia small business community about the most important factors when hiring employees, more than 8 in 10 (81%) said an individual's digital skills were important.

More than 6 in 10 (64%) said that Facebook is essential for their business. More than 5 in 10 (51%) said that the platform has helped them hire additional employees and nearly 8 in 10 (79%) said that Facebook allows them to reach more customers outside their city, state, and country.

We're inspired by what small businesses have been able to do using Facebook, but we want to do more – particularly for those who are transitioning to work requiring more digital skills.

o If you're looking for a job, we'll provide training to help you sharpen your digital and social media skills. According to the research, 62% percent of US small businesses using Facebook said having digital or social media skills is an important factor in their hiring decisions — even more important than where a candidate went to school.

o If you're an entrepreneur, we'll have training programs on how to use technology to turn an idea into a business or show you ways to create a free online presence using Facebook.

o If you're a business owner we're going to offer ways your business can expand its digital footprint and find new customers around the corner and around the globe.

o If you're getting online for the first time or you want to support your community, we'll provide training on digital literacy and online safety. And we'll also help community members use technology to bring people together, with features like Events and Groups.

General U.S. Findings:

o 80% of US small and medium businesses on Facebook say the platform helps them connect to people in their local community. o One in three US small and medium sized businesses on Facebook say they built their business on the platform; and 42% say they’ve hired more people due to growth since joining Facebook.

o Businesses run by African Americans, Latinos, veterans and those with a disability are twice as likely to say that their business was built on Facebook, and one and a half times more likely to say they’ve hired more people since joining the platform.

o 56% of US small and medium sized businesses on Facebook say they increased sales because of the platform; 52% of say Facebook helps them sell products to other cities, states and countries.

A panel of Atlanta small businesses walked through their own experiences and shared how they use these skills every day in their business. Panelists included:

Joes Gourmet- Maranda Walker-Dowell
Maranda came up with the idea of packaging a ready to cook breading mix about three years ago and the business has been growing ever since. Facebook and Instagram have been key to their growth, as they are trying to drive traffic to their e-commerce so they can sell their 12 oz fish fried package nationwide. They use advanced tools to target their audiences, the Facebook Pixel and Dynamic Ads being the most notable. Creating Custom and Lookalike audiences have made it easier to reach the right audience. Thanks to their success and community involvement they have been featured in Shark Tank and Good Morning America.

Magnolia Room Tucker - Nate Martin
Magnolia Room Tucker was created to pay homage to a restaurant called “S & S Cafeteria”, which the owner was a patron for 15 years. Nate said that the owner saw that people were going to lose a great restaurant to visit and work at, so he bought the business, moved it to Tucker, and even hired on at least 20-25 of the staff. While they have some local competition that has been in business for over 60 years, and Nate says that if it wasn't for Facebook, Magnolia Room would not have survived.

Seven Sisters Scones - Farrah Haidar
Seven Sisters Scones started their business in 2015, when one of seven sisters (who was actually a chef) decided to start selling her delicious scones. The business has expanded from selling simply scones to a cafe where they have a full breakfast and lunch menu. The scones have become so popular that Farrah decided to build an ecommerce business to start selling nationwide.

A Facebook representative also presented the latest tips and tricks for businesses on the platform. Participants learned best practices on connecting with more customers, creating ads to increase conversions, managing a digital presence and building awareness of a brand.

When my husband (boyfriend at the time) needed his apartment cleaned, I discovered an opportunity to better help serve someone just like me. That's when The Moxie Maids was born. About Our Chamber
Our Role in the Community
How We Serve Our Members

There is a battle happening in your community. Communities, towns, & cities need to be economically vibrant to provide services and environmental aesthetics and there is competition from other communities for businesses to invest in development to provide the ever-increasing revenue source required.

Your community Chamber of Commerce is on the frontline promoting your community to be more advantageous to business and development than the next community.

Atlanta is the fastest growing metro area in the U.S. and Alpharetta is the fastest growing city in the Metro Atlanta area.

Our guest on the Georgia Podcast is Nancy Hoehn, the CEO & President of Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce is here to share what the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce is doing that is making it one of the fastest growing cities in America.

Personal

She was also Executive Director/CEO position of a Toastmaster District Director and led a team of 70 providing support and guidance to the 200+ clubs and over 4,000 members in the in Central and Northern Florida.

Chamber:
Most of us know something about our community Chamber of Commerce.
But most of us do not think too much about why it is important to our business and quality of life.
A little history about Chambers of Commerce:
The first chamber of commerce was founded in 1599 in Marseille, France and the 1st in the U.S. was in NY 1768.

A chamber of commerce, also referred to as a board of trade, is a business network, whose goal it is to advance and promote the economic environment for business and general welfare of the community they serve. They are usually independent and sometimes quasi-government organizations that have influence on legislators by lobbying to have laws passed favorable to businesses.

A brief introduction to Alpharetta:
Money Magazine selected Alpharetta as the #1 City in GA
Southern Living magazine listing Alpharetta among the top 15 Friendliest Towns in the South.
Alpharetta has become the “Technology City of the South”, home to more than 700+ technology-based corporations enjoying one of the most robust and redundant fiber infrastructure networks in the southeast, along with a series of redundant electric/power networks. Alpharetta has more than 20 million square feet of office space,

How does the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce help the City of Alpharetta to be successful?

The Chamber connects the community by supporting businesses and entrepreneurs that, working together, will continue to strengthen this sustainable network.

Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce is in its 6th year and has grown to over 400 members.

Companies join the Chamber voluntarily; they are not obligated to become chamber members.

The Chamber works hard promoting the benefits of membership.

What are the benefits for joining a Chamber of Commerce?

The Chamber is an advocate for responsive government and quality education, while preserving Alpharetta’s unique community characteristics.

The Chamber Advances and promotes the economic environment for business, and to advocate responsive government and quality education, while preserving Alpharetta’s unique community characteristics.

In a very real sense Chambers of Commerce stands at the junction for government, business and residence interests.

The Chamber serves the interests of business and the community. However, it means that they must strive to balance the best interests for both business and residences when what is good for one may be detrimental to the other.

How does the Chamber do that?

The Chamber leads, grows membership, improves retention and educates the community on the value of Chamber membership

Can you give us an example how the Chamber aligns the interest of business and the community?

Alpharetta has an Economic Development Director. The goals are similar to the goals of the Chamber.

How does the Chamber coordinate with the Economic Development Director?

“The City brings them in – the Chamber inspires”

Chambers are businesses, competing against other chambers for investments

What is the value proposition?

What are its challenges?

What specifically needs to be done to make it grow?

At the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce, the voice for business and serving our business community is top-priority.

Chamber would like to have large corporations become more involved in the Chamber.

It would bring a consensus of what business thinks would be good for business and become the voice for the community.

A Council of large corporations would have access to the Mayor

What are the challenges facing the growth of the Chamber?

What is the Chambers growth focus – its target markets?

The Chamber is ready to grow to the next level and I look forward to working with the Board of Directors, the City and County Officials and the business community to make Alpharetta a much-desired destination and the Chamber a much-valued resource in the community.

What would the chamber do if it had a larger budget?

Increase staff to accomplish more
