I met Matt Dawson and Jay Jablonski at a charity golf event for Hope for the Warriors – a charity that helps war vets get back into life.
And when they told me about Dawson’s Peak project, I said we need to talk.
So here they are.
Matt Dawson – who goes by Dawson -- is a successful investment banker who changed his unfulfilled life by finding a purpose – not just to navigate the world, but to provide purpose for others.
And Jay Jablonski is an actor/producer. You know him from films such as Take Me Home Tonight, the Big Short, and my favorite Everyone Wants To Be Italian. He is the Director of Operations for Dawson’s Peak.
Along with vets and some celebrities, Dawson will climb seven of the highest peaks on each continent, circumnavigate the world in a single engine plane, cross the Mojave on motorcycle, and row across the Atlantic.

We are taking you to Ireland. Our expert Trina Vargo has an Undercover Jetsetter tour.
Trina is the founder and president of the US-Ireland Alliance. www.us-irelandalliance.org She is the author of a new book called Shenanigans The US-Ireland Relationship in Uncertain Times. And she has spent years visiting Ireland.
We talked about the tournament she held at the K-Club outside Dublin. Those were Ryder Cup format tournaments where we had 12 Americans playing against 12 Irish. The last one we held was just before the economy crashed around 2008. As the economy is coming back, if we find sufficient interest from sponsors, we would look to bring them back – people really enjoyed them. Those tourneys led to a lot of craic.
Any chance The Open will be held in Ireland?
Other courses we discuss: Old Head; links courses like Lahinch and Waterville; the buzz now is the golf course at Adare Manor, which is outside of Limerick which owner JP McManus has put a lot of money into the course and it will host the 2026 Ryder Cup.
What is best time of year to visit Ireland?
Where to stay in Dublin? Westbury Hotel in the center of Dublin.; walk nearly everywhere you want to go, they have two restaurants in house, a great bar and afternoon tea … it’s an easy place for people to meet me there. And they have great concierges who have been there forever and really know the city. It’s just become a home away from home.
First-timers to Dublin should see: Guinness Storehouse, the Book of Kells at Trinity College, and Kilmainham Jail to get your head around Irish history in about two hours. Writers Museum at Parnell Square, Hugh Lane Gallery, and art gallery, which has Francis Bacon’s studio, home of James Joyce is also nearby. For many years there has been an exhibition of the poet W.B. Yeats at the National Library of Ireland which is also worth checking out, EPIC Museum. It is a museum about Irish Emigration and it’s interactive, very well done, a great spot for the whole family, see plays at The Abbey and The Gate theaters.
Where to eat? Dunne and Crescenzi which is an Italian place with great coffee excellent food and good prices. For authentic Irish cuisine, you could try the Winding Stair. And there is a new great Asian place called Pickle. Bewley’s Café on Grafton Street is an institution and it was closed for years but when it reopened, they really retained what was special about it. There is no shortage of good restaurants in Ireland. The Irish cuisine is excellent … a foodie culture has definitely developed. Immigrants from around the world have brought their traditions and dishes to Ireland and that’s made it all the better. Gone are the days of only fish and chips. Go to Burdock’s if you want good fish and chips.
How about hiking?
About 40 minutes outside of town you can do a cliff walk from Bray to Greystones, which is lovely on a nice day. It’s not strenuous, it’s pretty flat. And the gardens at the Powerscourt estate are nearby and a nice place to find a quiet spot, as well as grab a bite.

off the beaten path: Lough Hyne. Lough is the Irish word for lake and this lake is not far from the town of Skibbereen. You can do a night kayak trip there from about 9 p.m. ‘til midnight. It’s magical. The lake is bioluminescent. incredible meal at O’Connors Seafood Restaurant in Bantry in West Cork. The Chef there, Anne Marie Butler, is one of Ireland's finest.

I was fortunate to graduate from Providence College in Providence Rhode Island. I also was a reporter and anchor at WPRI in Providence.
So over the years I have spent a lot of time there. It has a salty reputation from back in the 70s as a home for The New England mafia. In fact, I was there as the feds were cracking down on the Patriarca crime family.
Providence also had its political characters like former mayor, and convicted felon, the late Buddy Cianci. In fact, there is a play coming up – on buddy’s life -- at Trinity Rep – one of the great playhouses in the US – you should take in if you visit the Ocean State.
Providence has its own New England accent. Unless you lived in New England you would have a difficult time differentiating it from a Boston or a New York accent.
Providence also has its own language. A milkshake there is called a cabinet.
In Rhode Island and in Providence, it’s a quahog – not a clam.
And while driving, a rotary is known as a round-about.
Providence is also a rebuilt city that is a joy to visit with a great waterfront on Narragansett Bay. It’s food culture comes from the mix of Italian and Portuguese immigrants who make up a lot of providence and Rhode Island throughout the 20th century.

Miami and South Beach were devastated by Hurricane Irma. How can all of us help even if we live outside the area or we just love to visit?

Let’s bring in our friend and contributor -- Kelly Edge. She is a celebrity interior designer. You’ve seen her on HGTV. You also saw that she helped Undercover Jetsetter on our tour of Miami and South Beach. And she plays in a lot of Celebrity-Golf events with me.
Kelly talks about how things are improving. Most of the buildings, she says, survived without much damage. the problem was the trees knocking out power lines. And so far, the electricity is not back on. Still, she thinks Miami and South Beach will be ready for tourists by the time winter tourist season begins.
We did this interview on Wednesday September 13.
She also filled us on on a great restaurant she took us to -- the restaurant in a gas station -- El Carajo International Tapas and Wine. It is still there serving wine and tapas, but because it is at a gas station so many folks are trying to fill up but can't because there is no gas.
We hope to get down there once South Beach Miami or back to show how people can support the area.

Eric Snyder is the author of a book on the Oakland Raiders. So lo and behold, the Raiders move to Las Vegas.
Eric analyses the good and the possible bad for Las Vegas as they get theri first NFL franchise, a team that has moved from Oakland and LA before.

They’re called the Mitchell Scholarships – named after former Senator George Mitchell who was instrumental in bringing peace to Northern Ireland.
Each year the brightest students compete for 12 spots to study post-graduate in Ireland.
How prestigious? The Mitchell Scholarship has attracted students who have chosen it over the Rhodes Scholarship.

Benghazi NY Times Report Reveals US Ignorance and Opportunism
The New York Times has completed its investigation on the attack on Benghazi. It does not put this controversy to rest. We will try here, though.
It is Thursday January 2, 2014, coming to you from Sunset Beach, NC.
Read the Times report. It was out Sunday. But I am only reporting now because I wanted more time to read and think about it.
So far, the Times piece offers the most credible response to the right-wing takes on the attack that killed four Americans including Ambassador Chris Stephens.
You need to read other reports too – with the Times piece. The Weekly Standard also had a good piece rebutting the talking points in the Times piece.

Obama Care Distortions to ring in the New Year – before you want to ring someone’s neck.

OK, I’m conservative. No wait I’m liberal. Huh? Maybe I’m libertarian.
This is the funny, much contrived, and funny conversation I have with myself – when people who try to label me.
It get this a lot.
A friend who identifies with the Republican Party will say to me, “you are so liberal.”
A half-hour later, a friend who leans Democrat says, “you are such a conservative.”
When I tell another friend about those two earlier conversations, that friend says, “you’re a libertarian.”
And although I agree with Ron and Rand Paul on some things – I am no follower.
In fact, I follow no one.
Now, I love these reactions. It means I am waking up people. But granted, I like to challenge my friends’ beliefs – and see where they really stand.
And that’s what you should be doing. But if you say to someone, “you are so liberal” or “Good God, you’re conservative” and you leave it there – most times you are trying to divide or denigrate someone – who doesn’t believe what you believe.
I have a confession. I sometimes post on social media just to see the diversity of reactions. I consider it testing for Informed Not Inflamed.

I posted an article about Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s remarks -- opposing Obamacare. Primarily, he – and the Church – are against businesses being forced to push no-cost contraception – something Catholic institutions would be against – due to Catholic teachings – in the health care policies they have to offer now under Obamacare.
I said that Dolan’s remarks defied logic. I wrote:
So you’re against abortion. Ok. But you’re against contraception too? Talk about either/or stupidity. You want to believe it, fine. We don’t. We want a reasonable society.
Someone said that seemed a little inflamed, on my part. Maybe so. I would consider it impassioned – as were the responses.
The most impassioned were for those in favor of Cardinal Dolan and the Catholic Church position.
One person wrote it is about not having sex before marriage. Another wrote that Dolan has to defend Church teachings. And some felt my comments were pro-abortion.
When it comes to foreign policy – Americans are speaking out quietly and loudly.
Unfortunately, our political leaders and the media elite seem to be listening to foreign money – and not us.
Here’s what we’re saying. We have had enough. Look at the reaction to these recent events:
The interim nuke deal with Iran.
The US reaction to the Syrian chemical attack.
Now look at the polls. The most recent was the Reuters poll a week ago. By 2-to-1 Americans are in favor it.

It’s called Blessings in a Backpack.

We’re talking Obamacare Distortions again. The web page screw ups have led to more political wrangling that only helps politicians on both sides of the aisle raise money, while leaving many Americans scratching their heads.

First, cancellations went out because current or old policies did not meet the requirements of the new Affordable Care Act. People could still get a policy – on the exchanges -- that will be better but not necessarily cheaper or more expensive. The problem is getting on the website to get to those newer policies.

We’re focusing too much on investor value and not on American value – or jobs.
Two stories might prove this. First, the Affordable Care Act. Sure, it is a debacle. But it was a debacle from the start when the Obama Administration made a deal with the health insurance industry. They make profits. Cutting costs for them does not lead to profits. Thus you see policies being cancelled. It was inevitable.
The second story is the merger of American and US Air. The new airline will be the biggest in the world. DOJ forced the new airline to give up some routes so there would be more competition. The truth is the airline stocks soared. What we haven’t seen yet – are job layoffs and increased fares for travelers. Granted, DOJ had no real case to stop the merger – because of the precedents set with United and Delta mega-mergers before.
The system is gamed against workers – and entirely for the investor – because of big corporate and special interest money.

It’s called the Simpson Bowles Plan. The official name is National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. Google Simpson Bowles PDF and you can read it there.
The Commission was headed up by former Republican Senator Alan Simpson and former Democratic White House advisor Erskine Bowles.
It lays out a plan for spending, taxes, and entitlement reform. Since most politicians won’t pay attention to it – because it will hurt many special interest groups – it is up to the people to push for this.
It is essential to our survival as a country.
And it will help us all individually too – in the long run.
