There is now strong evidence that the virus AAV2, alongside an underlying genetic predisposition, played a key role in cases of acute hepatitis in children, according to a new study published in Nature – the first detailed research investigation into the worldwide outbreak.In this podcast, host Stephen Devlin takes a deep dive into this new publication with lead author Dr Antonia Ho, Bioinformatician Dr Richard Orton and Pathologist Dr Vanessa Herder.The peer-reviewed study, which was led by researchers at the University of Glasgow in collaboration with the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, Public Health Scotland (PHS) and ISARIC (International Severe Acute Respiratory and emerging Infections Consortium) WHO Clinical Characterisation Protocol UK (CCP-UK), found that the common virus AAV2 (adeno-associated virus 2) was present in a range of different samples taken from children with acute unexplained hepatitis. In contrast, AAV2 was not found to be commonly present in samples taken from children in the control groups. New research from Professor Daniel Streicker and colleagues has revealed that vampire bat culls may actually exacerbate rabies transmission, rather than reducing it.In this podcast, Anna Kirk chats to Daniel Streicker and Megan Griffiths about their research around vampire bats and rabies virus. Listen to the 2022 Stoker Award Winner, Professor Christian Drosten talk about his coronavirus research, challenges of science communication and the song that a German punk band wrote about him!On Monday 9 January, we welcomed 2022 Sir Michael Stoker Award winner Professor Christian Drosten to the CVR.This annual award is awarded to a highly reputable scientist to honour their significant contributions within the field of virology who have excellent transparency with their research, regularly engaging with both the public and within the research community.Candidates are nominated and voted for by students, postdocs and technical staff within the CVR - and winners are invited to the CVR for the day to receive the award, meet with our early career researchers and give a seminar.The winner of the 10th edition of the award, Professor Drosten is the director of the Institute of Virology at the Charite University Hosptial in Berlin, and is an instrumental figure in the field of coronaviruses , particularly in the areas of cross-immunity and host adaption.Some of his career highlights include the co-discovery of SARS-CoV, development of the first diagnostic WHO-approved RT-qPCR against SARS-CoV-2 and the development of RNA and antibody assays against MERS-CoV, which first implicated camels as the primary reservoir.Christian also has a general interest in the evolution, epidemiology and host-adaption of many other emerging viruses such as Ebolavirus, Avian Influenza and Zika Virus.

In this special edition podcast for world hepatitis day Anna Kirk interviews John McLauchlan, a Professor of Viral Hepatitis at the Centre for Virus Research. John is an expert in hepatitis C virus, a bloodborne virus which can often result in chronic infections. Globally there are an estimated 71 million of these chronic infections which can result in cirrhosis or liver cancer. Today, the development of antivirals against hepatitis C virus enables this infection to be cured in more than 95% of cases however, access to diagnosis and treatment is low and there is currently no vaccine available. We discuss this and more in the episode as we look back on John’s successful career and celebrate his many achievements.

It is almost one year since the first positive case of COVID-19 confirmed in Scotland, and in this episode we talked with Clinical Research Fellow James Shepherd about how COVID-19 was introduced in Scotland from mainland Europe (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41564-020-00838-z). Prof Nic Stonehouse from the University of Leeds talks to us about her career and how the right mentorship led her to a professorship studying picornaviruses. She also tells us about the exciting projects currently being developed in her lab looking at the replication of foot-and-mouth disease virus and the develop of empty viral capsids as potential vaccine candidates for poliovirus and enterovirus 71.

In this episode, ex-postdoc Dr Connor Bamford will be speaking with Dr Rachel Ulferts from the Francis Crick Institute in London after she came to Glasgow recently to present her fascinating work.

Dr Ulferts is currently a postdoc in the lab of Dr Rupert Beale at the Crick where she works on influenza virus and a cell process known as autophagy - or 'self eating'.

Previously Rachel worked on a number of RNA viruses, like coronaviruses or picornaviruses in labs across Europe, including Northern Ireland and The Netherlands, before coming back to the UK to work at The University of Cambridge and then onto London.

In this episode Connor talks with Rachel about her work on autophagy, her interest in fundamental virology, and her exciting plans for the future.

Today, postdocs Connor and Elihu talk with Dr. Robert Gifford, CVR’s resident evolutionary virologist and senior research fellow. Rob’s lab combines sequence data and software development to explore virus genomics and coevolution of viruses and their hosts. He applies virus genomics to help and guide treatment of HCV-infected patients; support genomic surveillance and outbreak response for bluetongue and rabies; and explore the diversity of endogenous viral elements in published genome sequence data, just to name a few of his projects. Season 2 Episode 7: Today Connor's following on the theme of innate immunity started by Greg and Adam in the last two episodes and is joined by Dr Marlene Dreux, Team Leader in immunovirology at the Centre International de Recherche en Infectiologie (CIRI) in Lyon, France.

Marlene combines cell biology, viruses and immunity to find out how our cells sense viral infections, like dengue, chikungunya and hepatitis C virus, to keep us safe. The Dreux lab very recently published a study identifying a new cell communication structure, the 'interferogenic synapse' that acts to block viral infection. I hope you enjoyed last week’s episode with Jack, Douglas and Greg Towers because now we’re continuing on that theme and speaking with Dr Adam Fletcher, a fellow innate/intrinsic immunity enthusiast, like Greg.

Join Connor Bamford and Andrew Shaw for this week’s episode where we’re thinking bigger than we have before this series. Think about how influenza virus and similar viruses like varicella zoster virus - or the chickenpox virus- behave on the global scale.

In this episode we're joined by Dr Kevin Bakker, a postdoc in the lab of Dr Daniel Streicker here in Glasgow who currently works on how vampire bat rabies spreads between animals.

You might remember Kevin from an earlier episode where he and Daniel explained to us all about their work on vaccinating vampire bats against rabies virus. But today Kevin talks about some of his earlier work during his PhD at the University of Michigan on finding patterns in how viruses infect people and populations around the world using something called digital epidemiology with tools like Google trends. This analysis revealed a pattern dependent on the mating schedules of humans.

Kevin also has a particularly noteworthy career path that he’ll tell us about.

These barriers are important for dictating which hosts can be infected by different types of influenza virus. In the first episode of our new series, Jack is joined by PhD student Bernadeta Dadonaite from the University of Oxford to hear about how the flu virus arranges its genome inside the virus particle. Bernadeta studied the flu genome structure by using a technique called 'SHAPE-Map', which stands for: Selective 2'-hydroxyl acylation analyzed by primer extension - Mutational profiling. This is essentially a tool to figure out how a molecule like RNA folds.

CVR Contagious Thinking Episode #24: World AIDS Day with HIV expert Professor David Robertson, PI and head of bioinformatics at the CVR.

Today, the 1st of December marks World AIDS day. A day designed to raise awareness of those 37 million people infected with HIV (and the potential for that number to grow) and this year aims to end Isolation, Stigma, and Transmission, under the umbrella of a ā€˜right to health’. This day is one of 9 Global Health days of the World Health Organisation alongside other infections like Tuberculosis, Malaria and Hepatitis.

AIDS - or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome - is caused by HIV or human immunodeficiency virus. HIV is a kind of virus called a retrovirus, which means it can stick itself into our own DNA making it extremely hard to get rid of. There is currently no vaccine to stop you from contracting HIV and there is no cure if you do get infected. Those people infected can never rid themselves of the virus but can stop developing AIDS by taking medicine, known as antivirals - that blocks the virus from growing inside them, and those them getting sick.

This medicine is now a combination of different drugs referred to as highly-active anti-retroviral therapy, or HAART. A combination of medicine is needed because if only a single drug is used, HIV can easily become immune or resistant to it. HAART must be taken for the life of the patient or else HIV will begin to grow again and can lead to AIDS.

Some of the antivirals are so effective that they can be taken by an uninfected person to prevent HIV infection. This is known as pre-exposure prophylaxis or PREP. Other things like using condoms during sex or not sharing injecting drug paraphernalia can reduce the chances of spreading the virus.

While developments like HAART, PREP and rapid diagnosis are making global control of HIV/AIDS more of a reality, there is still work to be done. Making World AIDS day all the more important.

Nothing in biology makes sense except in light of evolution and HIV and AIDS is no exception. Questions like: Where did HIV come from? When did people first get infected? Why does HIV cause AIDS? And how likely will the virus become resistant to our antivirals? Can all be answered by looking at how the virus changes or evolves over time.

To explore this important area and mark World AIDS day, we talked with Professor David Robertson, principal investigator and head of bioinformatics at the CVR. David has dedicated his career to understanding HIV evolution and how it interacts with our cells and he does this through the power of computational biology and bioinformatic approaches. Happy Halloween from all at the CVR!

About this time last year in 2016 we made an episode of Contagious Thinking (which I encourage you all to have a listen to/see link at the end) about vampire bats and the deadly rabies virus that they can carry and spread across Latin America.

Vampire bats can carry the rabies virus and pass it to a person or a farm animal such as a cow when they bite to feed on their blood. If bitten by a rabid bat the infected animal will probably die.

Here we talked with Dr Daniel Streicker (a research Fellow who works between the CVR and the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine in Glasgow) and Julio Benavides, a postdoc in his lab about their recent studies on tracking and predicting how and when vampire bat rabies will move through Peru, from the Amazon in the East to the Pacific Ocean to the West.

One point raised in this episode was: what use is a prediction if you don’t act on it?

In this latest seasonly-inspired, follow-up episode of the CVR’s podcast, Andrew Shaw and Connor Bamford, both postdocs, return to darkest Peru and catch up with Daniel again along with Kevin Bakker, a new postdoc in his group about using a vaccine against rabies, for wild vampire bats.

We discuss why you need a vaccine, how would you vaccinate wild bats, and how do you make sure you’re doing it in the most effective way possible. A vaccine has been used to combat rabies in pet dogs and in wild foxes. Vaccinating wild bats might sound impossible at first but you can rub a vaccine into an individual's fur and it will be groomed off and spread when the bat returns to roost. Daniel's team are currently doing field experiments and computer modelling to see what the best way to do this is: for example, how many bats should I rub vaccine on?

In this episode of Contagious Thinking Elihu and Connor talk with Steve Polyak from the University of Washington in Seattle USA about how some drugs stop viruses from infecting us. In particular we chat about his work on a drug Arbidol that can block many viruses and is actually an over-the-counter medicine in Russia and China.

All life lives in a sea of viruses, and some of those viruses can make us sick. Humans have thus developed many ways to stop these rare viruses causing illness. One major important example are vaccines. Another are a class of medicines called antivirals that stop a virus from making new viruses when they get inside our cells.

Some of these antivirals can control an infection successfully for the lifetime of an individual, like with HIV and others - like for hepatitis C virus, an important longterm infection - can cure an infection so that there is no more virus in your body.

But have you ever wondered what it takes to make antiviral drugs? Steve gives us a glimpse of the work scientists worldwide do to understand how small molecules can mess with viruses.

In the latest episode of Contagious Thinking, join CVR PhD student Jack Hirst and postdoc Connor Bamford as they chat with Dr Charles Masembe about his work on some of Africa's most important animal viruses.

Charles works currently on a virus called African swine fever virus (ASFV), which causes a deadly disease in domestic pigs that can cause great economic and political turmoil in affected regions. ASFV is a fascinating large DNA virus that is spread by wild pigs and the ticks that feed on them. The virus can move between the wild pigs and farmed domestic pigs. Understanding this movement is a major focus of Charles' work.

Charles is a veterinarian and molecular epidemiologist by training and is an associate professor at the College of Natural Sciences at Makerere University in Uganda. He is working in a collaboration with scientists at the CVR to sequence ASFV samples from pigs across Uganda. His work is funded by a recently awarded Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellowship in Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

Welcome to Contagious Thinking, the podcast from the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research. In this episode 20, we’re discussing the respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, a virus which will infect all of us before we’re three years old and can be deadly in the very young or old. Moreover, RSV has a particularly high burden of disease across the developing world.

Jack Hirst(influenza virology PhD student in the Hutchinson lab) and Connor Bamford (postdoc in the McLauchlan lab) are joined by Professor Jürgen Schwarze of the University of Edinburgh - following his seminar at the centre, who explains what RSV is, how it could be tricking our immune systems, and why parasitic worms and our gut microbes may hold the key to preventing damage from RSV infections.

Every year the CVR's postdocs and students award the 'Sir Michael Stoker award' to a leading scientist in virology who comes to our institute, meets with students and staff and gives a lecture. Past winners include Vincent Racaniello, Peter Piot, Francoise Barre-Sinoussi, Beatrice Hahn with this year's winner being David Baltimore.

In 2015, Jon Yewdell was the Stoker prize winner and he came to the CVR and delivered his famous 'How to Succeed in Science Without Really Trying' lecture. We were lucky enough to record it for Contagious Thinking. Listen here to Jon's wisdom and get excited for science again!

Join Andrew Shaw and Connor Bamford – CVR postdocs - for a chat with Professor Jan Rehwinkel from the University of Oxford and MRC Human immunology unit in this recent episode of Contagious Thinking. Following Jan's recent seminar at the CVR, he talks with the podcast about his lab’s work on understanding how our cells ā€˜know’ they have been infected and how they kickstart an immune response that’s going to stop us getting sick.

Viruses and other microbes are all around us and some are just waiting to infect and cause disease. Why then don’t we get sick more often? Why – when we do get sick – do we not succumb to disease more often? Why then if we survive that infection are we usually protected from it in the future? The thing that’s helping us out and stopping us from getting sick is our immune system, the amalgamation of defences that millions of years of evolution has gifted us.

Most people will recognise antibodies and T cells, the immune responses with memory that are the basis of all of our vaccines. But people will be less familiar with the concepts of innate immunity? Interferon? or intrinsic immunity, which are all important in our defence against viral infection. Find out all about these under-appreciated immune response in this new episode.

Every year (it's happening as we speak!)the CVR holds an exciting competition called the "Sir Michael Stoker Award". This prize is unique in that the winner is selected by the junior members of the CVR: the PhD students and Postdocs and is an excellent opportunity to meet our virology idols and all nominees for the prize are established, outstanding virologists who have made a significant contribution to their field.

In previous years we have had Mike Malim, Francoise Barre Sinoussi, Vincent Racaniello and Peter Piot. Beatrice Hahn won the 2016 competition and came to the CVR late last year.

Professor Beatrice Hahn who is based at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, was 2016's winner of the prize and while she was at the CVR she recorded a podcast with the Contagious Thinking team.

Beatrice is most well know for her work on the zoonotic nature of HIV and understanding the origins and evolution of modern human infectious diseases (http://www.pnas.org/content/110/17/6613.full). Here, she talks to Yasmin Parr, Joanna Crispell and Steve Larcombe (from IBAHCM) about her fascinating science and career.

Here, Josie - our undergraduate honours student - asks, "What can virologists do to combat antibiotic resistance?". To answer this, she talks with Dr Neil Ritchie, an infectious diseases clinician in Glasgow, about the looming, real-world problem that individuals face when the bacterial infections they have are not able to be treated easily with routine antibiotics.

Building on this, Josie then speaks with CVR scientists Dr Sema Nickbaksh, a postdoc, and principal investigator Dr Pablo Murcia, about their work on understanding the common respiratory viral infections in people and their epidemiology, that may mimic a bacterial infection. Better and more rapid diagnosis of a viral infection would prevent the unnecessary prescription of antibiotics in the clinic.

In preparation for the Northern hemisphere's 'flu season, Josie speaks with the CVR’s Dr Ed Hutchinson – an MRC career development fellow – and Dr Swetha Vijayakrishnan, a postdoc in the group of Dr David Bhella for our latest episode and asks them about a mysterious aspect of influenza biology.

Ed and Swetha share a fascination with the reasons why viruses such as influenza and ebola produce very, very long and thin particles and here they tell us about how they're using state-of-the-art proteomic and molecular techniques in combination with advanced 'cryo' electron microscopy to understand the biology of these amazing filamentous structures.

In this episode, join Josie and Connor who talk with Drs Daniel Streicker and Julio Benavides about their work on preventing the spread of vampire bat rabies across Peru.

The 28th of September marked the 10th World Rabies Day, and this year's theme was "Rabies; Educate. Vaccinate. Eliminate." While most global efforts aimed at rabies control focus on spread by dogs and other carnivores, the Streicker lab working in the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research, and the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine at the University of Glasgow, are looking at how the rabies virus is transmitted from blood feeding vampire bats across Latin America.

Vampire bats are the major source of rabies in this region and Daniel and Julio hope that by studying closely how the virus interacts with these bats they can establish more effective strategies to prevent rabies transmission, which will aid global efforts to eradicate the virus as a public health concern.

In this episode, Connor chats with two CVR scientists, principal investigator and director of the institute, Professor Massimo Palmarini, and PhD student and vet, Eleonora Melzi. Eleonora and Massimo explain to us a bit about their work, which has recently been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

Their paper provides new insights into how bluetongue virus evades the immune response of its host by drastically altering the workings of the lymph node, a critical organ of the immune response. Bluetongue is a very serious infection in sheep and other livestock animals and is an arbovirus, spread by midges. Climate change and global warming are making bluetongue outbreaks more common in Northern Europe and the UK.

In our 6th episode, Dr Andrew Shaw, CVR postdoc, chats with Professor Dave Evans, (@evanslabuk) a virologist from the University of St Andrews, about bees and their viruses.

Dave visited the CVR last year where he talked about his lab’s work on studying the replication and recombination of positive sense RNA viruses, like hepatitis C virus and polio virus. But for the podcast we chose to ask him about his other interest: beekeeping, which he combines with his love of virology in his lab-turned apiary in St Andrews.

In episode 5 we talk with Dr Mike Weekes, a clinical consultant and Wellcome Trust Senior Clinical Fellow at the University of Cambridge about his lab’s work on using a technique he pioneered called ā€˜quantitative temporal viromics’ (which is a kind of proteomics). The Weekes lab uses this method to understand infection by human cytomegalovirus (HCMV – also known as human herpes virus 5) with an overall aim of discovering novel antiviral targets, which are required urgently.

In episode 4 we meet four members of the CVR who went to Sierra Leone to help out with the ebola virus epidemic during 2015. Ph.D students Caroline Chauche and Navapon Techakriengkrai along with postdocs Agnieszka Szemiel and Chris Davis all worked in diagnostic labs in the West African country at different times during the outbreak. Here they tell us their story about what it was really like to help out during the peak of the epidemic.

Here, on World AIDS day, we meet Dr Clare Jolly, HIV virologist, about her work and her groups work on how HIV spreads from cell-to-cell and what this means for antiviral treatment and vaccination.

Clare is a Senior Research Fellow in the Division of Infection & Immunity at University College London and was at the CVR earlier this year to give a seminar on her work

Importantly, Tuesday 1st December 2016, marks world AIDS day, which (as their website says) is an is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public and Government that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.

Like the Jolly Lab, CVR investigators carry out comprehensive research on HIV and related retroviruses, looking at HIV evolution in patients, animal retroviruses, cancer-causing retroviruses and how our innate immune system defends ourselves against them. These labs include, the Neil, Gifford, Hosie, Thomson, Willett and Wilson labs.

The CVR meets Mary Collins who talked to us a bit about the past, present and future of gene therapy and how we are using viruses to cure human disease. Mary is Professor of Immunology in the Division of Infection and Immunity at University College London, the head of the Division of Advanced Therapies at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control, and the Director of the Medical Research Council Centre for Medical Molecular Virology.
