Women have, both willingly and unwillingly, taken on masculine roles. It is not easy to remain connected to our femininity.

The word feminine is still connected to connotations women are admonished against. To some, it means weakness, to others, it’s a perception of inferiority to overcome.

Femininity is strength fueled by love. It’s a flowing power to transform, heal, create, and recreate. It’s as potent as any masculine power, and often it exceeds it.An obstacle to living immersed in the power of the feminine is a deep societal belief that the ideal woman is a superwoman workhorse fueled by self-sacrifice, competition, and disciplined deprivation. She’s a “beast.” Successful in her attempts to be like men and do everything a man can do, she starves her feminine aspects.

Something has to give, and it’s usually self-care softness, sweetness, and sensuality. The loss is tragic. Blocked from the wellspring of the feminine, she becomes a celebrated automaton. Everyone praises her superhuman efforts, high productivity, and how she thrives under stress. It’s a formula for burnout and disease.

Healing comes when she breaks down and is forced to take care of herself. The price is the loss of her hard-won superwoman title and the upset of all who no longer benefit from her overperformance. The ache for the healing powers of the feminine is subtle. It lingers in the recesses of our minds, rarely acknowledged. I’ve witnessed it most in small, intimate, and unstructured gatherings of women. These gatherings create a safe space for women to confess another unpopular desire: a hero, a man who will love, protect, provide, and worship her. This desire is expressed in hushed, apologetic tones, as though at any moment, secret agents will burst in and take her away for failing as a woman.

Embrace your authentic truth and accept yourself completely. It’s okay to tell your truth and to want what you want. Invariably, heroes abound when they do. They are desperate to be adored by Venus and to live in your tenderness. Give in to your deepest feminine desires and needs. Nurture your creativity. Write, paint, sing, talk, dance, plant, cook, and celebrate life.

Channel your inner Venus by honoring and approving her desires and expressing them in your life.

Connect with Your Inner Goddess Meditation

When Resurrecting Venus was published in 2012, I set out to share my writings, learn to host a radio show and take my life in a new direction. Everyone told me what I needed to do to succeed and balance my family life. It was overwhelming. Much of the advice I received was well-intended and good but not good for me. I have always known that the ultimate wise woman in my life is my higher self, my inner Goddess. You may call this your soul, spirit, God, energy, or something else. The important thing is that you know there’s a power in you that knows what’s best for you. Then you must learn to access it. To help you do this, I created this meditation. Bookmark this page and return to it regularly, especially when you need a wise answer. Enjoy.

Do you say yes when you really want to say no?

Do you say yes even if it may cause you upset, discomfort, or financial or emotional harm?

If so, you’re among a vast group of women who want to please others and struggle with setting or upholding healthy boundaries.

You want to be liked, and you worry that saying no will disappoint others, and they won’t like you.

I know just how it feels. I’m a recovering yes-aholic.

The need to please is often rooted in childhood. It comes from the deep desire children have to please their caregivers. It’s important to recognize that survival is the ultimate motivation behind the desire to please. Immature child minds reason that if their caregivers are happy, they will care for them, and they (the child) will live. If the caregivers are unhappy, they will withdraw or express displeasure causing the child to feel abandoned and her perception of survival threatened. Many of us are still moved by this old wiring.

For some women (men, too), disapproval is almost unbearable.

Thankfully, as adults, we can see this dynamic clearly and let go of the need to please. Our survival does not depend on pleasing others. In fact, it’s far more likely to depend on us making intelligent choices and upholding healthy boundaries so that we can invest our energy in life-enhancing activities.

Another barrier to saying no is worrying about what others might think. Here’s what you need to know:

–The people who love you love you, and they want you to make the best decisions for your life.

–The people who love you only when you do what they want are teachers here to motivate you to set healthy boundaries.

–You don’t know what other people think. You’re thinking for them.

–What YOU think of YOU matters more than anything anyone else thinks.

Consider the following questions:

What do you think of yourself when you go against your true desires? What do you think of yourself when you fill up your time with things that prevent you from doing what really matters to your life? What do you think of you when you can’t trust yourself to only make decisions that improve your life?

And here’s another good one:

When you meet someone who is happily in control of their commitments, joyfully agreeing to the things they choose, and graciously declining unwanted requests, what do you think of them?

I respect and admire them for living on purpose. I also feel comfort and ease because when they say yes, I can count on them to show up eager and content to be there.

I have little confidence in someone who goes against their own desires.

If you’ve struggled with setting boundaries, you can choose to end that era right now. You can choose to love, honor and support yourself.

How you treat yourself teaches others how to treat you.

Setting boundaries does not mean being rude, selfish, or acting like a jerk. It is a generous act that results in less stress, increased happiness, and more time for what matters most to you.

The next time someone:

–asks to stay at your house, and you don’t want them to
–asks for a loan $___ (btw, never make a loan, make it a secret gift, if you can’t gift it, don’t loan it)
–calls you incessantly to wear you down
–attempts to guilt you into doing something you don’t want
–solicits for the greatest cause ever
–hard sells you on what you don’t want
–you get the idea . . .

Remind yourself: It’s okay to say NO.

Next, kindly and firmly—using as few words as possible and little to no explanation—decline the request, set a boundary, or offer what you are willing to do.

If it makes it easier, use words like unable, can’t, or say you have other plans. It’s okay.

If you must, silently finish your boundary-setting statement with your truth: I cannot let you stay at my house (without feeling unhappy with myself).

Imagine all of the things you could enjoy, accomplish, and avoid if you said NO whenever you wanted to say it.

Everyone with a life you admire has learned this vital skill. It’s your turn.

Begin today. Leave me a comment and tell me one or two things you’re going to flex your NO muscles on.

1. Only YOU can define what success means to you. Success is achieving something that is deeply fulfilling for you. It doesn’t have to include wealth, recognition or acclaim, though it can. The girl in the picture above looks pretty successful to me.

2. Successful people doggedly pursue their interpretation of success. They do so without regard to what others think of them. Did you know that when the show Seinfeld debuted audiences, focus groups and critics hated it?

3. People who are successful know how to fail. Failure is an inextricable part of success. Accept it and expect it and you’ll handle it better. Did you know that Stephen Spielberg was rejected by both UCLA’s & USC’s film schools?

4. Successful people know to count the “no’s” they receive because they bring them closer to “YES”. Requests for assistance, work, representation and consideration hinge on two things: 1) the quality of your offering (you, your idea, item or product) and; 2) the ability to persevere. There will be at least 10 no’s for every yes. Depending on the industry, there can be hundreds of rejections before success. Jack London received more than 600 rejection letters.

5. People who are successful pursue their passions. Persevering through the challenging times requires real love; if you don’t love what you’re working for, you won’t have what it takes to stick it out.

6. Successful people delay gratification. The ability to delay your comfort, desires, and rewards is strongly correlated with the amount of success you’ll achieve. Instead of having a little now, put your head down and focus. Work smarter and harder now and you’ll have a lot later.

7. People who are successful feel worthy of succeeding. If you don’t feel worthy of your dreams you’ll sabotage yourself. Jumpstart your self-worth and personal power.

8. Success is usually guarded by a paper dragon –a fear that proves impotent when faced. Acknowledge the fear and walk through it.

9. Successful people take consistent action toward desired outcomes. All things are created in thought first, but it takes ACTION to manifest the non-physical in the physical realm.

10. Successful people protect their dreams from people who undermine, predict their doom or criticize them. They know that other people can only speak from their beliefs, perspectives, limits and fears, not yours. Seek out supportive people and communities that encourage and motivate.

Cheers to your success!
