VODKAST RECORDS
Vodkast Records is made of a record and audio shop, DJ mix series, club nights, and a record label from Tbilisi.
It started in 2010 as the first DJ mix podcast by Gio Bakanidze - our friend and one of the pioneer DJs in Georgia. Before Gio's tragic passing in the same year, six podcasts have been recorded by Georgian DJs posted as ‘oldies’. Vodkast has been re-launched in 2011 by Gio’s friends through posting weekly DJ mixes of local and foreign artists. Since 2012, Vodkast club nights are being held across various clubs and festivals in Georgia, among them the lovely 4GB - annual dance gathering as a tribute to Gio, which has been growing ever since Gio's friends launched it in 2011.
Later in September 2015, Vodkast Records - a vinyl record shop opened its doors in Tbilisi and restarted the underlying culture since its disappearance from the recent past. Same year saw the first release of Vodkast record label which was followed by couple more limited vinyl releases of local musicians.
We are grateful to all of our friends, artists, listeners and everyone who has supported Vodkast throughout the years.
Cigar Galaxy is a newly discovered orbit within the Vodkast Records universe, transmitting dancefloor-focused edits from the outer edges of the cosmos.Its first signal, CG1, emerges from the depths of the Tbilisi underground. Last summer I received the Krebuli compilation from Vodkast, and I must admit it's hard to go through so many tracks digitally as I'm very much a hands-on record person. While checking the 21 tracks and taking note of what grabbed me I wanted to make a better connection with the music, and instantly decided to make a Techno-Tool remix of every single track. It took me about 12 hours straight to make 21 remixes, and I produced them in the same manner as I play techno, heavy handed, ruff, gritty, but always with something to hold on to. Having my 6 hour techno set at Bassiani (2019) fresh in mind, and also the Wania nights I do at Tresor (basement), it felt alive, fresh, impulsive and energetic to grab-tweak-and-punch-out some solid tools for those endless DJ sets. Knowing these type of tools would usually only stay in my own archive it's a pleasure to hand them over to the Vodkast crew, hoping they'll reach out to hungry Techno DJ's, ready to flip & play them skillfully in-the-mix! – DJ SOTOFETT

Sad sunday mix incoming by a special guest Sven von Thülen aka s:vt. The mix was recorded at Garden Opening Staub in September 2019. There is much to be said about Sven, so please dive in and read through the below:
Since moving to Berlin in the mid-nineties, Sven von Thülen immersed himself in all things club culture. In the Spring of 1999, he started working as an editor at De:Bug magazine, while also writing for other magazines and newspapers.
As a DJ, he has been a club fixture since the early 2000s, holding residencies at various locations throughout the city and playing regularly at Berghain/Panorama Bar since its inception. He is and has been touring extensively as a DJ, playing hot spots like Concrete in Paris, Robert Johnson in Offenbach, fabric in London or Golden Pudel in Hamburg, as well as festivals like Glastonbury, Nation of Gondwana, Fusion, Garbicz or Melt!. Currently he can be regularly found behind the decks at Heideglühen and STAUB.
He has released various house and techno records both solo and in groups on labels like Spencer Parker's Work Them Records, Ellen Allien's Bpitch Control, John Osborn's Dred Records and his own labels Expansion Unit and Constant Variables. Sven von Thülen has remixed (solo and in groups) A-list DJs/producers like DJ Hell, Ellen Allien or Radio Slave. He continues to work as a DJ, producer and writer.
He co-wrote (alongside Felix Denk) the oral history Der Klang der Familie - Berlin, Techno und die Wende, an in-depth look at the beginnings of Berlin's techno scene in the late eighties and early nineties, which was published in March 2012 by renowned German publisher Suhrkamp. In 2013 a French translation was published, and in October 2014 Sven von Thülen and Felix Denk self-published an English translation called Der Klang der Familie - Berlin, Techno and the Fall of the Wall, followed by a translation into Spanish in November 2015. A Russian translation will be published in late 2019.
The book was turned into a TV documentary called "Wendeklang"/"In This Place Called Techno", for which Sven von Thülen co-wrote the script. He also curated the soundtrack, which featured two of his own original compositions. The documentary was aired on French-German TV station ARTE in July 2014. New music and a new music related film projects are on the way for late 2019 and early 2020.

While based out of Berlin, in the successive years the pair have teamed up with Altered Soul Experiment to co-curate a bi-monthly night at OHM, inviting a broad range of local and international guests. Since 2010, mostly on sad sundays, we have been sharing DJ mixes and now have reached our 200th edition with the spontaneous anniversary mix by JD J, Nika J and Vakho. Recording is taken from the Vodkast night in wonderful Ciskari sometime in August, 2019. Its a compilation of different songs, grooves and melodies which have been with us for a long time now...

Third release from Vodkast Records by V.C.V.S.
V.C.V.S. was founded by Irakli Shonia and Sandro Kozmanishvili in Tbilisi, in 2016. After spending considerable time together in the studio, the debut CD album "Sections from the Imaginary Future" was released in May 2017 on label “Hanker”, containing more ambient/experimental music. After two intense years, Irakli and Sandro found new inspirations and ideas, which led them to return to the studio and record the EP called HUM in August 2018.

We are kicking off our Soundcloud premieres with the B-side of Abstand’s debut record “Opek".
Abstand is a duo of Brugger and Simon Popp, both members of the Munich-based jazz group Fazer. On their debut 12" Opek they provide of-kilter polyrhythmic percussion psychedelia, layering live and unedited drum tracks blended with sparse electronics that add a subtle Middle Eastern tint.
The B-side, which we are premiering now, comes with a remix by Stefan Schwander aka Harmonious Thelonious. The Salon des Amateurs denizen serves us a pulsating and more club-leaning take showing why he can always be trusted with turning live percussion into bold, hypnotic jams for the perceptive clubgoer.

Our next podcast features Bazhanov Brothers - |Roman Bliznetsov| & Konstantin Shvydko, DJ duo from Almaty, Kazakhstan. Friends for 25 year and record spinning partners for more than 15 years. Roman was a soloist player in project called AkkordIon (with K. Timoshenko) where both investigated & experimented with natural acoustics of instrument (accordion) and combining it with field recordings & concrete sounds in ambient & drone structures with huge dub influences. Roman passed away after two years of fighting cancer. Mix was recorded on May 18, 2017 as a test version for Vodkast mix series in one take without editing. The set can be described as an unstable spring weather, when through the rainy grey clouds on the transparent blue sky one can see the rays of the gentle May sun. Due to many mistakes in transition and gain level, the Duo decided to re-record the session, but due to deteriorated health of Roman it was never done. So, please, don’t judge strictly the technique and take it as it comes! Enjoy!

DJ Babba, familiar amongst many Tbilisi DJs as a tutor of the art has been around since early 2000s. He was the inspirator of the first record shop and DJ school Capsule till 2003 and then moved to a similar establishment Louder and supported DJ Bero and MixO in running a DJ course till 2004. Then was one of the organisers of Kiketi Open Air - a famous festival of the 'early days'. Lived in Moscow in 2011-2014 performing in venues such as 16 Tons, Propaganda and Denis Simachev Bar. In 2015 returned to Tbilisi and till present is heading a DJ course at Creative Education Studio. Musically, Babba is all about classic disco, soul, dub and deep house but lately is diving deep into a so called American sound.
