Hello and welcome to The LKN Experience Podcast! This podcast is being presented by Mike Bagwell of Enders Insurance and Hanna Schoenrock of WriteWell Services. Scroll down for our episode library or listen anywhere podcasts can be found.
Mike Bagwell sits down with Treehouse owner, designer, and builder, Tim Thomson, to talk about his Lincoln County-based and AirBNB-featured Crooked Shutter Treehouse.
Tim shared his motivation for designing and building his treehouse in Lincoln County. He talked about the (very creative) design aspects of the treehouse, the treehouse space (inside and outside), his inspirations, the time it took to complete the project, some suggestions for others considering this type of a project, and of course, the science behind the use of trees as a building foundation!
We talked about what Tim learned during the design and construction phases; including assuring the safety of his guests and the positive interactions with the County zoning department. Tim also gave us a glimpse into the future of other exciting things that he will be taking on through his business!
Lastly, Tim shared his admiration and thanks for the many people and businesses that provided their guidance and support throughout the journey. A few of the businesses that Tim worked with include Kyle Bender, Realtor, Heavenly Maid Cleaning Service, Wheelhouse Media, Intelligent Design Engineering, Nelson Treehouse and Supply, and the Lowe's located in Denver, NC.

Teenagers shut away from the rest of family, sitting alone in a dark room in front of a monitor with a headset... every parent's worst-case scenario, right? That narrative is changing, folks! Owners of Level Up Esports, Matt Phillips and Jim MacDonald, sat down in their recently outfitted, state-of-the-art gaming facility in Cornelius with host Hanna Schoenrock to talk about how their vision became a reality and what the future holds for gamers (it's really cool!).
For parents who've wished our kids would get outside and off the couch and away from the gaming screen, this story is a positive, exciting one. Last year, Matt and Jim decided to create a space for kids to come to a safe place, participate in a sport (gaming), be on a team, have the opportunity to win trophies and make new friends, and get coaching and mentorship. Oh, and some of these kids are preparing to enter college on esports scholarships! That's a thing!
You'll hear more about how Level Up Esports became a reality--including when they initially had to set and up and tear down computers and headsets and other equipment like a pop-up business. The current facility is high-end, but their prices are not. They work hard to make it possible for anyone aged 7-15 to participate. There's even a Club option for kids over 15 who want to play and compete.
Level Up Esports offers recreational gaming, coached gaming, team competitions with national teams, tournaments, Club-level competition, and camps. The kids--some with disabilities, some who are not drawn to traditional sports, others who play traditional sports during some seasons and game in other seasons--are all gamers, and they've found a place to make friends, learn life lessons, play games in a safe space, and compete if they want to. The parents tell amazing stories of the positive impacts this organization has had on their kids.
This is a feel-good story. Enjoy!
And a huge THANK YOU to sponsor 760 Docks!

In this community-centered episode, host Hanna Schoenrock sits down with Denver residents Bud and Ann Cesena. Bud is currently a Lincoln County Commissioner and is seeking a second term in the upcoming election, and Ann is president of the Westport Association. Hanna, Bud, and Ann talk all things community. If you live in Lincoln County, don't miss this one!
Bud talks about how his 30 years as a police officer in Mecklenburg County and Ann's various roles in the public school system (including being one school's disciplinarian) ensured that neither are bashful about much of anything. They've been serving their communities for many years; it was a natural next step for Bud to dive into local politics and for Ann to serve Denver's largest neighborhood as President of its Homeowner's Association.
On the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners, Bud has accomplished a great deal with his colleagues, and he looks forward to accomplishing even more next term. He talks about the projects that he hopes to tackle and the issues that affect Lincoln County residents. Early voting begins on April 28, and the primary is on May 17. If you're interested in supporting Bud, you'll find all of his contact information below in these Show Notes.
Ann talks about how rewarding it is to be involved with her neighbors and with the community. Both she and Bud stress the importance of getting involved, making a difference, and building community. Civic-minded and incredibly friendly and fun, Bud and Ann are tremendously involved and invested in Denver and Lincoln County. Enjoy the episode!

In this episode, Derek, son of Kevin and Maria Dunn, talks about how Complete RV was started over 35 years ago and has remained local and in the family the entire time. Derek is a great storyteller--and not surprisingly, he loves all kinds of camping!
Derek tells the story of how his dad Kevin started in the business and eventually decided to open his own shop in Denver, NC. In 1998, at the age of 15, Derek joined the family business, helping with repairs and maintenance. Derek's mom Maria brought her extensive knowledge and talent of interior design to Complete RV in 2011. As the business has expanded, offering partial and complete RV renovations to the service line has provided Complete RV with the opportunity to serve even more customers by partnering with them to create their dream RVs.
While Complete RV began with a focus on service and maintenance, the Dunn family has expanded the business model to include renovations, a fast-growing market and one that boomed during the Covid quarantine. People realized they could work and do school from anywhere, so they packed their bags, hopped in their RVs, and hit the road.
The crew at Complete RV stand ready with experience and love for what they do to service your RV, maintain it, or glam it up! You can check out all they offer at their website: https://completervnc.com/

Our guest for Episode 64 is Patty Korn, a Denver local, a valuable asset to the Lincoln County Community, and an all-around selfless, fantastic person. If you've driven around Denver, you've most likely seen her; she's on the side of the road or on a median, dressed in safety gear from head to toe, picking up the trash that people throw out their windows or that blows off vehicles. And does it for free.
You'll love hearing Patty's story of how she got from Illinois to Denver, of spending 20 years in the Air Force, of working in corporate after her years of Air Force service, of retiring to care for her elderly parents, and of deciding to make her community beautiful. She just gives. And she works really hard. You'll find her on roadsides, waterways, and medians--wherever she sees the need. You'll also find her at County Commissioners meetings and at the Sheriff Department, asking for their help and building relationships that result in willing cooperation with her and her mission.
Patty is President of Keep Lincoln County Beautiful, and she has tremendous support from Hessed House of Hope (to clean the railways), DABA (Denver Area Business Association), LKN Realty, and ELBA (East Lincoln Betterment Association), in addition to some loyal friends who volunteer to pick up trash on roadways and medians with her and to drive boats to clean up waterways. She's always looking for volunteers. She advises against small children helping with the roadway cleanups because "it's gross and it's dangerous" -- but she welcomes everyone else.
Patty spends a lot of her own money on her mission. Her safety gear was donated to her, and the Department of Transportation donates official roadside cleanup bags. But she buys the black trash bags, the litter pick-up tools, push brooms, shovels, and "lots of Gatorade." She has a GoFundMe called Litter Free Denver NC. Please consider donating to this worthy cause. You can also donate to Keep Lincoln County Beautiful, which The LKN Experience podcast is supporting for the month of August. Let's show our appreciation to this Beautification Warrior and fill her coffers so she can focus on doing what she loves--making Lincoln County beautiful!

Our guest for Episode 62 is Esther Alcamo of Esther and the Exiles, a local band that plays around the Lake Norman area. This is Part 2 of the conversation with Esther; you can hear Part 1 by listening to Episode 61. Singer/songwriter/pianist Esther and host Hanna Schoenrock had a great conversation at the D9 Brewery in Cornelius--however, the brewers were doing their brew thing and the brewery sounds took over. This is Take 2! We so appreciate D9 allowing us to use their space to record! Go check them out; they’ve got excellent brews!
In this episode, Esther talks about the art of music and how it moves people. She shared about her many influences--mostly amazingly talented women who sing and play piano--and she talked about some of the great concerts she's attended. She also talked about the band's sound and about their creative process. And the best part of this episode is that listeners get to hear Esther play the guitar and sing an original song she wrote during 2020 (in the midst of a pandemic).
Esther, her husband Sal, and their friend Jon Strickland are the constant 3. The Alcamos met Jon when they moved from NY to Cornelius and their kids played together. You'll love hearing about the fantastic dynamic of a husband and wife plus a friend who create together, travel to gigs together, play together, and hang out as friends together. The band also works with drummers Elliott and Mike. They play mostly around the Lake Norman area, but you can also book them for private events.
Check out this episode, and then go find Esther and the Exiles at one of the many cool venues they play at and listen to some awesome live, local music. Enjoy!

We so appreciate D9 allowing us to use their space to record! Go check them out; they’ve got excellent brews!
In this episode, Esther talks about growing up with a love of music. She and her sister sang and played together, she performed at church, she plays a variety of instruments (but mostly piano with the band), and she attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of the Arts, known as the "Fame" High School in New York City. She even admitted to having danced on tables in the lunchroom. She shared about her many influences--mostly amazingly talented women who sing and play piano--and she talked about some of the great concerts she's attended. Zach talked about what brought him to Denver, NC, the Young Professionals Group, a few of his hobbies, and of course investment strategies and investment vehicles.
Zach also reviewed a lot of very informative and timely “Educational Topics” including his role as an Advisor and Fiduciary, the importance of understanding the Stock Market at a young age, and also shared information about Compound Interest, IRAs, and Roth IRAs.
I was really impressed with some of the creative ways that Zach educates his clients and how he serves them throughout the year. And whether you have been investing for a long time or if you’re new to investing (or want to encourage your kids to start learning more about the Market and how it works), Zach is a great resource.
And I couldn’t help it; I also asked him a question about Game Stop!

If you love all things creative and beautiful, this episode, showcasing a local business with a mission statement that begins with "Our primary goal is to honor creative expression," is a must-listen! Pam Hess, owner of Albertine Florals, Wine, and Gifts in Denver, NC, shares with this episode's host, Hanna Schoenrock, about how and why she and daughter, Kate, decided to buy the floral and gift shop.
Kate, an artist who was already working at Albertine for former owner, Judy Armstrong, had a vision when Judy decided to sell her shop. Together, Pam and Kate bought the shop and jumped in eagerly to learn about everything from store signage to permits for selling wine to arranging flowers to creating custom silk arrangements. And then they expanded the space and made room for local artists to bring in their wares and for local groups to hold events.
Pam and Kate work with around 18 local artists regularly--potters, painters, wood turners and wood workers, jewelers, quilters, gnome creators, candle makers, and metal workers among them. Some of the artists have their works displayed daily, and some participate in twice-per-month pop-up events that include wine tastings. In addition to the pop-up events, you can find (socially distanced) book launches and book signings, paint-your-wine-glass events, networking events, make-your-own-bouquet events, and meet-and-greets with local groups.
