UNDER CONTRACT "Covenant Love" Lakeshore Gastonia Campus Pastor: Robert Rosales

4 Words to Portray Love

1st 2 rooted in MERCY - Showing leniency by not imposing deserved consequences. 1. (hb) ahaba - Describes intense emotion of favor or affection that one person has for another; husband/wife; parent/child; etc. 2. (hb) hesed - Arguably the richest Old Testament word describing a covenant type of love. Conveys the idea of love in action; consistently demonstrated; always ready to overcome any obstacle. Also translated as mercy; loving-kindness; goodness; faithfulness.

2nd 2 rooted in GRACE - Freely bestowing a benefit that could never be earned 3. (gk) charis - Mostly translated as grace in the New Testament. Describes a divine goodwill that could never be earned, but is freely bestowed to benefit the recipient, regardless of the cost to the one allocating the benefit. 4. (gk) agape - Describes what occurs when an individual recognizes and appreciates the value of another to the point they are compelled to bypass any and all limits or boundaries that try to constrain the demonstration of their love. This extends even to the point of sacrificing oneself for the other person with no strings attached and no guarantee of anything in return.

  1. Covenant love impassions God to keep His promises.
  2. Covenant love moves God to be tenderhearted and extend mercy.
  3. Covenant love inspires God to give grace and act with redemptive action.

3 Keys from Galatians 3:13-14 1. I am redeemed from the curse of the law. 2. I have the blessing of Abraham. 3. I have received the promised Spirit.

Promise Contains 2 parts: Refers the both WHAT God promised and THE ASSURANCE that the "promised things" will be done.   General Promises vs. Specific Promises General: Broad categorical commitments given by God to every believer in every age. No limitations on recipients or time period. (ex. Phil 4:6-7) Specific: Detailed, personal commitments made to specific people on specific occasions. (ex. 1 Kings 9:5)

3 Guiding Principles Regarding God's Promises 1. God's promises are sometimes conditional. 2. God's promises are designed, in part, to help us submit to His will and to trust Him. 3. We can't presume to know when, where or how God's promises will be fulfilled in our lives.

We Have This Hope As An Anchor

Joni Brockelbank

Why Anchor our Ship? To keep from being wrecked, lost or totally destroyed. Matt 8:27 - “Who is this that even the winds and seas obey Him” Mark 4:39 - “He rebuked the wind and said to the sea Peace by still and the winds ceased and it was calm

Benefits of an Anchor An anchor is used to keep a vessel from being wrecked, lost or destroyed, and brings comfort and assurance to those aboard they aren’t being controlled by the storm or at its mercy. Is 25:4 - “He is a shelter from the storm” Phil 4:7 - “He gives us peace that passes all understanding” Eph 2:14-16 - “He Himself is our peace”

The Strength of an Anchor Anchors are made of heavy materials that enable it to bear the strain of a storm and wont corrode from the elements. 1 Pet 1:3 - Because of Christs resurrection from the dead He is our living hope.

What Do We Do With an Anchor? We hold tight -- not to the WHAT, but the WHO. Jesus. He is our hope. Ps 91:14-16 - "Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.”

The Anchor Holds Isaiah 43:2 - “When you pass through the waters I will be with you, and when you pass through the rivers they will not sweep over you.”

The Bible makes it abundantly clear that God's plan is for Christians to be victorious in every area of their life by understanding and applying the finished work of Jesus Christ. But too often we don't see that victory come to pass. This series will demonstrate the victory that Christ has already paid for, what we have access to because of His finished work, and how we are then intended to live as a response to this.

Scriptures

  • Revelation 12:11 (NKJV) - And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.

  • Matthew 22:1-11 (NLT) - Jesus also told them other parables. He said, 2 “The Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a king who prepared a great wedding feast for his son. 3 When the banquet was ready, he sent his servants to notify those who were invited. But they all refused to come! 4 “So he sent other servants to tell them, ‘The feast has been prepared. The bulls and fattened cattle have been killed, and everything is ready. Come to the banquet!’ 5 But the guests he had invited ignored them and went their own way, one to his farm, another to his business. 6 Others seized his messengers and insulted them and killed them.

7 “The king was furious, and he sent out his army to destroy the murderers and burn their town. 8 And he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, and the guests I invited aren’t worthy of the honor. 9 Now go out to the street corners and invite everyone you see.’ 10 So the servants brought in everyone they could find, good and bad alike, and the banquet hall was filled with guests. 11 “But when the king came in to meet the guests, he noticed a man who wasn’t wearing the proper clothes for a wedding.

  • Luke 14:15-24 (NLT) - Hearing this, a man sitting at the table with Jesus exclaimed, “What a blessing it will be to attend a banquet in the Kingdom of God!” 16 Jesus replied with this story: “A man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations. 17 When the banquet was ready, he sent his servant to tell the guests, ‘Come, the banquet is ready.’ 18 But they all began making excuses. One said, ‘I have just bought a field and must inspect it. Please excuse me.’ 19 Another said, ‘I have just bought five pairs of oxen, and I want to try them out. Please excuse me.’ 20 Another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

21 “The servant returned and told his master what they had said. His master was furious and said, ‘Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ 22 After the servant had done this, he reported, ‘There is still room for more.’ 23 So his master said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full. 24 For none of those I first invited will get even the smallest taste of my banquet.’”

What are the areas of pride, preoccupation and presumption that are blocking what God wants to do in your life?

Scriptures (All NKJV)

  • Revelation 4:1-11 - After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.” 2 Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. 3 And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. 4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. 6 Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back.

7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. 8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!” 9 Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying 11 “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.”

  • Revelation 5:1-5 - And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it. 4 So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it. 5 But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.”

  • 1 Corinthians 1:25-29 - Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26 For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence.

  • Revelation 5:8-14 - Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation 10 And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.” 11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands

12 saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!” 13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!” 14 Then the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever.

-  Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (NKJV) - “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

  • Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV) - And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

- Matthew 6:5-15 (NKJV) - “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. 13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. 14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Scriptures

- Matthew 1:18-23 (NKJV) - This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. 20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet:

23 “Look! The virgin will conceive a child!
She will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel,
which means ‘God is with us.’”

- Matthew 2:1-2 (NKJV) - Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, 2 “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.”

- Psalms 99:5 (NLT) - Exalt the Lord our God!
Bow low before his feet, for he is holy!

- Isaiah 53:6a (NKJV) - All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord [a]has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

- Romans 3:23 (NKJV) - for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

- 1 John 1:8 (NKJV) - If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

- John 10:10 (NKJV) - The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

- Romans 5:17 (NIV) - For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

- Galatians 3:13-14 (NKJV) - Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

- John 3:16-17 (NKJV) - For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

- Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV) - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

- Luke 9:23-24 (NKJV) - Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.

Scriptures

- Ephesians. 6:10-18 (NKJV) - Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—

- Matthew 4:4 (NKJV) - But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”

- John 6:63 (NKJV) - It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

- Romans 8:26-28 (NLT) - And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. 28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

- Romans 8:18 (NKJV) - For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Message Points

1. THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS GUARDS MY IDENTITY

Righteousness = The quality of being right both in position and in relationship with God. Righteousness is both judicial (Declaring of righteousness) and gracious (Gifting of righteousness). God has declared and imparted to believers righteous and has acquitted them of their sins through the finished work of His son.

“The Devil” is not the enemy’s name; it is his title and the description of who he is and what he does.
Devil = Means to slander, accuse falsely, oppose the cause of God with words, to author evil, to persecute good men, astringing mankind from God and enticing them to sin.
Slander = The action and the crime of making a false spoken statement damaging a person’s reputation.

2. THE SHOES OF PEACE GUARD MY PATHWAY

The devil wants, through fear, intimidation, and anxiety, cause you to GIVE UP, GIVE IN, and GET OUT of God’s will.
God wants you, through faith in the finished work of Jesus, STAND STRONG, STAY FAITHFUL, and STAY in His will.

3. THE HELMET OF SALVATION GUARDS MY MIND

Salvation = Means complete deliverance, preservation, soundness, prosperity, happiness, rescue, and general well-being. It is used both in the material temporal sense and also in the spiritual and eternal sense. Salvation is a present possession with a fuller realization in the future.

WE CAN STAND STRONG, STAY FAITHFUL, AND STAY IN the will of God by using God’s Word to put on the Breastplate of Righteousness, Shoes of Peace and Helmet of Salvation

- Matthew 16:18 (NLT) - Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.

- 2 Timothy 3:16 (NKJV) - All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,

- Numbers 23:19 (NKJV) - “God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent.
Has He said, and will He not do?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

- Psalms 119:89 (NKJV) - Forever, O Lord,
Your word is settled in heaven.

- Matthew 24:35 (NKJV) - Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

- Joshua 1:8 (NKJV) - This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

- Joshua 24:14-15 (NKJV) - “Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! 15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

- 2 Corinthians 10:1-6 (NIV) - Now I, Paul, myself am pleading with you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—who in presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you. 2 But I beg you that when I am present I may not be bold with that confidence by which I intend to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

Message Points

1. WE ARE IN A BATTLE

2. IT IS A BATTLE OF WORDS

Wiles (Gk.)- methodeia = Meta-"after & Hodos- "a way"
Taken together these words describe a specific “way after” in which the devil operates. It’s his “MO”…the way he does things

3. THERE IS STRENGTH FOR THE BATTLE

Scriptures

- Romans 12:1-2 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

- Acts 17:10-11 - Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. - John 15:7 - If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
