Odd Reform: The Creativity Podcast: Recent Episodes

Kate Shriner

Calling all creatives and oddballs - yep, I’m talking to you. Ever felt like you lost your inspiration? Or have you ever been stuck in an indefinite “creative block”? Well, I’m here to take a giant burden off your shoulders by debunking all the depressing myths surrounding creativity. You’ll learn how to listen to it, harness it on command, and use it anywhere and everywhere. You'll see how creativity is the heartbeat in your business, your job, your side-hustle, your hobby, and all the in-betweens.

Let's start this Odd Reform.

Oh, and by the way, I’m your host, Kate.

For the final episode of The Odd Reform Podcast we’re covering the concepts that we saw pop up over and over throughout most of the episodes. Addi and I first discuss the three negative themes that we need to avoid (auto-piloting, influence and pendulum swinging) and then jump into the the positive themes that we’d like o grow in (intentionally, community, discernment, and balance).    We’ve had an absolute blast chatting about all these topics and we hope you’ve enjoyed them and gleamed from them as well.    The podcast may be coming to an end but Odd Reform is very much alive. To stay in touch, follow us on Instagram @oddreform.   Keep on thinking odd.

So if you haven’t heard by now, it has been three years since the start of the Odd Reform Podcast and after a ton of consideration and reflection, it's bittersweet to announce the podcast will be coming to an end. I’ve learned and grown so much, I hope you have too. But I’m also very excited for this new chapter. Odd reform is still very much alive and you can follow along and see what we’re up to on instagram @oddreform.

We still have a topic for today (our second to last episode), which is all about absolute truth versus “your truth” and how “your truth” is extremely problematic. Keep listening to hear Olivia and I break it down.

View Details

Today’s topic is one that has weaseled its way into every area of our lives and it can take over if we’re not careful. It’s the enticement of convenience. It’s so tempting and we all struggle with it even if we’re not aware. It makes life so easy, so much more efficient — but at what cost? That’s what Addi and I will be discussing today. We’ll look at tons of examples of where we can find it (a.k.a. pretty much everywhere) and it can be really overwhelming. Hence why we have spirals of thoughts because it’s embedded into every single thing we do. So prepare your self as we take a closer look.

Following your heart sounds like the sweetest cutest thing, but the heart is actually one of the most unreliable intuitions we have. It's today’s version of living your truth and really it's the pretty way of letting your emotions dictate your actions. In today’s episode Addi and I will break down even further what following your heart means, what can make it dangerous, what we should be doing instead and obviously not without a few tangents thrown in there.

Are you a fan of New Year's resolutions? If your answer is “yes", “no" or “I don’t care”, then this episode is for you. Olivia and I go into this episode blind meaning neither of us knew how the other felt about the topic until we started recording!    We have a blast chatting about what we don’t like about New Year's resolutions, why one of us loves them, why people fail at them and some tips on how people can actually have success with them.    SNEAK PEAK: we found out we have opposite opinions on the topic — take a listen to find out who loves them and who hates them!

It's officially our last podcast episode of the year (MERRY CHRISTMAS), so in light of that I wanted to chat about neutrals. And more specially why there’s no such thing as a neutral especially starting with our thoughts. Everything is either good or bad. And the better we can identify the good and the bad the easier time we have identifying and controlling what influences us. A neutral is just another way of saying “an influence”, because thats exactly what a neutral will do if we’re not careful. We classify neutralities as “harmless”, “no big deal” “comfortable” to justify it. But we’re just digging ourselves a deeper hole. Addi and I chat about what this looks like in real life — from childhood, to parenting, to the media and tons more. Take a listen to hear it all.

Todays episode is a little different. There’s no perfect solution or black and white formula. It's really more of a discussion on a very culturally prevalent value that none of us seem to question or even consider as an influence. We’ve normalized it so much that it permeates into the core of our identity. And that is this concept of "loving yourself". Where did it come from? Does it actually work? How does the concept tie in to your faith as a Christian? These are all questions Addi and I mull over in todays episode. Keep listening to hear more.

As humans we tend to be very black and white with how we judge people. The bad vs the good. And we tend to be very cut and dry as to what that looks like. Mean people are bad, nice people are good. But I think its actually much more complicated than that. The nuances of intention and interpretation have so much to do with it and we’re gonna use some of that today as Addi and I discuss what we’ll call the "helpful person” and how they tend to be one of the more misunderstood types of people. if you are the helpful person — We’ll look at your strengths as well as what challenges you. OR you may be the person who KNOWS the helpful person and well see how you can make sure you're not taking advantage of them but instead finding ways to help them. whether you identify as the helpful person or the person who knows the helpful person this episode will definitely get you thinking — so keep listening to get the full scoop.

Everyone wants to be unique and stand out, especially nowadays where individualism is a fundamental principle for most of us. While every human is special and does bring their own twist to the world, We’ve started to lose the luster of relating and understanding others. We have so much in common with the people around us and its actually good for us to be aware of that. It unifies us and humbles us. So today I’ll be sharing the five signs to detect if we think we’re more unique than we really are.   Primally Pure code: ODDREFORM

Feminism has brought about so many necessarily and long awaited rights for women. But what has started as a positive movement has slowly morphed into the thing it was fighting against. yes we still want to make strides forward and we want women to be valued as equal to men. But NOT at the cost of being hypocrites with a double standard.   We, as women, are striving for equality not dominance and control of power because that would just be a reverse loss.   Today my friend Olivia and I dive in head first into how our culture has sadly stripped feminism of its integrity and why this new version can be so harmful.

Big personal update: On April 23 this year I finally had my baby - her name is Beverly Wilde. and I'm finally doing an episode on some of the crazy things I just did not see coming and some real good lessons I’ve been learning from it. From realizing birth was not the hardest part of having a kid, to being okay with feeling two seemingly opposing feelings at once, to loving a baby human a scary amount you didn't think was possible — and so much more that my friend Addi and I will fully unpack in today’s episode of the odd reform podcast.

Usually we divide people into two groups: adventurous or cautious. But in reality most of us are a mixture of both — it just depends on the scenario.    Olivia and I break this down to the nitty gritty and look at the importance of being open to new things because learning to see where we enjoy risks (i.e. food, travel, conversation etc) and where we prefer safety and security is so helpful with our quest in growing as people. We'll give tons of examples to show you what both can look for different people in different circumstances.    But as always there’s pros and cons everything and we’ll see exactly where the pendulum swings can bubble up.    Calendar: https://oddreform.com/

Today I get to interview one of my good friends and mentors — Jess Penner. She is an all encompassing musician who specializes in licensing her music and has found success through all her hard work. She’s had placements for H&M, Days Inn, Sharpie, Payless Shoes, Disneyland, BMW, JC Penny, T-Mobile — the list goes on of companies she’s gotten to work with. Jess is seriously one of the most talented people I know with an incredible story (which you’ll hear all about on todays episode) of how she got to where she is.    She is full of wisdom and insight and gives really practical advice on what it actually takes to make it in the creative industry. And also fun fact: our podcast intro and outro song is actually from the album that her and I recorded together. This one right here:

The word nice and kind get interchanged all the time and it feels like people legit do not see a difference or cant articulate a difference which is absolutely terrifying to me since one is basically an insult. I am super passionate about the difference bc people can just assume that upfront, assertive people are “not nice” and write them off. Well it’s true, a lot of times they aren’t nice, but niceness, once you really uncover what it is, has virtually zero value to it. I have absolutely no desire to be nice and every desire to truly be kind and think of others. On today’s episode addi and I divulge all of this. We define what nice really means and what kind really means and see how they surface in all different kinds of situations. We’ll see how niceness is self-focused while kindness is others-focused. This is one of my favorite things to talk about as you’ll see, so make sure you keep listening. Calendar: https://oddreform.com/

I have a big announcement for the podcast that addi and I will be discussing on todays episode. When you start something from scratch its hard to fully project what it will look like consistently over time, bc sometimes you just need to start it and do it, and let it play out to really be able to hone in on an explicit direction.    And that’s exactly what’s happening with our podcast, I started it over two years ago primally as a resource for Odd Reformers to really learn more about creativity and all the concepts that intertwine with it.    I don't see this next step as a change or switch but as a honing in on our direction that better services you the audience with even higher quality, more substantial content.   I’m also really excited bc this update will also allow me to develop other areas of Odd Reform that I haven’t been able tend to.   And don't worry the podcast isn’t going anywhere! But you’ll def wanna keep listening to hear all the details.

I have some big news — I'm having a kid! It's cool, exciting, super weird, terrifying.
We see the two extremes - women who grow up wanting to be a mom OR women who don't want to kids at all. But there's a group of us in the middle who maybe want kids but who aren’t really "kid people".
My friend Olivia and I both fall in this middle category and discuss this even though neither of us have kids — yet, haha!

There’s two types of people in the world. The people who deal with things immediately and those that put things off to the last minute. The interesting part is both have equal amounts of strengths and weakness. We all gravitate more towards one (as it should be). The trick is understanding and appreciating what you bring to the table PLUS what the other sides does too. Addi and I discuss all the things.

I actually know you CAN do that thing you're thinking of right now. The biggest obstacle is your mindset and that’s exactly what were addressing in today's episode. Even though this season is a wild ride, I always want to make sure of three things: I'm getting things done on time, I'm spending quality time with my friends and family, and I'm getting enough rest. So here are my 5 quick tips of how I make that happen.

Nowadays, we are able to excel in an industry without any formal training, we can rely primarily on our creativity and intuition, which is invaluable. However, the challenge is then that you’re relying essentially on your own instincts which in some cases can misguide you or confuse you.

But how can we tell the difference in the moment? And what does this have to do with confidence? Well I highly recommend listening to this episode to find out.

Lets face it, the first time we try something - most of us suck. And to be honest we probably don't show the outside world what sort of mishap we created. At least speaking for me. But I'm guessing that may be you too. So why is it so hard for us to push past that, to be patient with ourselves and to remember a masterful beginner isn’t a thing.

We become experts, masters, and professionals by trail and error, practice and more practice.

I’m so excited to introduce to you Faith Bullard who is an incredibly talented artist that is experienced in many mediums. She talks us through how she learned to push past the beginner phase, and that she even kinda enjoys the beginner phase. We’ll also get to see the beauty in creating simplicity and how that can actually be more difficult than creating something complicated. And how she building a community around her artwork changed the game for her. Let’s dive in.

Pricing is such a touchy subject. But one that needs to be discussed. Too many people emotionally price their product and tend to under value their work. We think we’re doing people a favor or straight up we just lack the confidence to think people would actually spend that kind of money on what we do or make. Well that is a complete lie. To find out why AND to hear what 10 factors you need to be including in your pricing - take a listen.

Are you able to acknowledge your strengths without feeling like your being cocky or arrogant? Are you able to see your weaknesses without being self deprecating and feeding insecurity? Most people have a hard time with one or the other or both. It just gets awkward. And worst yet, we can only go as far as planned. Meaning, if you can’t tell where you excel and where you fall short, you’re gonna cap out from just winging it or guessing. Eventually it will catch up with you. Either your weaknesses will sabotage things, OR your strengths will fail you because you’re not fully utilizing them.

Today’s discussion, Addi and I are diving in deep to strengths and weaknesses. Tap to play.

We all compare ourselves, all the time. The thing is, we do it primarily by finding differences which is as easy as ..we'll finding differences. We all do it. All the time.

We’re gonna first look at comparison and how that actually effects our work. We’re gonna set a foundation, and then we’ll further look at comparison and break it out into two ways it can be done. Mindless comparison and intentional comparison. We’ll see how mindless comparison is causing quite a bit of damage in your life and how we can pivot to intentional comparison - which leads to no longer crossing your fingers that your work is unique but intentionally seeing exactly how you can set yourself and your work apart. This is a game changer.

We all have at least someone in our life that has a hard time seeing our vision or potential dreams and goals. One of the biggest downers we face as creatives, is people not believing in our vision. And if we’re not careful we can allow this to do some damage. Today I want to explore why this is so common, let you know that you’re not alone, and even gain some perspective and compassion towards those we don’t feel fully support by.

You may think this is about poking holes in your vision but it’s actually to look at how certain types of people can have a hard time seeing potential goals, ideas and visions. I separate people into four categories and give insight into why they may have a hard time jumping aboard the vision train.

Community is one of the most overused words but one of the most powerful concepts. Addi and I plunge head first into what TRUE community looks like and how sometimes we settle for a false sense of community.    We see how coming at it with a “take” mentality (how does community benefit, serve, help me), fuels a false sense of community and get’s you nowhere fast.    True community is an investment that takes time, energy and sacrifice.    Every single one of us needs it, regardless of how “introverted”, “non-peoplely” you might be. Has doubt or questioning gotten the best of you during a project? I recently just finished my bathroom remodel and it was a rollercoaster of emotions. Doubt and questioning almost ruined my project. But thankfully I overcame and used these four tips to finish the project better than I had even anticipated.

Hint: I learned to use doubt and questioning to my advantage, take a pause to reflect, know my strengths and weaknesses and was able to confidently pivot midway - making my project turn out better than I could of imagined.

If you’ve ever felt doubt before - this is for you.

A lot of times we distill being an extrovert or introvert to one question: do people energize or drain you? But that’s just one small variable in what plays into being extroverted or introverted.

Addi and I have a casual chat about how most people are somewhere in the middle and it actually depends on the type of environment you are in. Social gathering, party, tight knit group, emotional processing, thought processing, productivity, collaborative, explorative and so many other areas that may provoke a different reaction from ourselves.

We talk about the pros - the cons, weaknesses and strengths and how everyone has something to bring to the table.

Creativity is confusing, I get it. So let's strip it down and focus on two angles - the big picture and the small picture.

We first take a look at how the big picture is mysterious and how we need to be okay with that. We also see that far too many people over-focus on it. And then we look at the small picture - where we can actually get practical and make results happen!

We learn why we NEED to acknowledge both angles to thrive, but how one deserves more focus than the other.

Let’s get weird.

Working in a corporate or traditional environment is usually the stepping stone to another dream for most people. We start to think that being our own boss is the only way we can be happy.

Well, that’s not the case with Mandi Johnson. She spent 10 years working for herself and came to realize, not only was it not for her, it was actually causing more harm than good.

We discuss her journey as an interior designer, her transition from working for herself to working in corporate, how we need to view education, and how creativity (or lack of) is a lot of times routed to deeper things in our lives.

So I first zoom out and look at why we’re all feeling similarly, then I give you 3 steps (or options) to move forward. We’ll cover why we first need to take a consumption break, how we find our specific role, reorienting our content, and then… MOVE FORWARD.

We get into the pros and cons of working from home versus working in an office. Especially in light of current events, a lot of us are working in environments we’re not used to. Addi and I are complete opposites but the thing we have in common is that we both worked in an office and we both now work from home, but we each responded completely differently to these changes. So we have a casual chat on the challenges, benefits, lessons learned, and some tips and tricks that might help you!

Sometimes we confine creativity into this finite box that we only use in specific areas of our life can only use one specific way. Is that the truth? Today, interior designer, Alison explains how creativity has so many different forms and how we can start to incorporate it differently into our lives depending on what part of our live needs what. And we’ll see how this actually can eliminate creative blocks or exhaustion.

She also fills us in on how the interior design industry and home decorating has exploded over the past few years and what the advantages and consequences of that can be. She walks us through how you can design your living space without giving in to the culture of mass consumption. And she also gives us some great advice for finding your style as well as how to stay creative while working a creative job.

Over-simplification of concepts tends to lose the original intent. Before we dissect the phrase “done is better than perfect”, we need to first:

Take a deep dive into the struggles and strengths of the perfectionist AND corner-cutter bc the harmonizing of these two contrasting groups is what makes that phrase TICK.

Then we’ll re-examine AND rework the phrase so no matter who you are, you can learn from it and utilize it in your work.

We’re switching up the format today and doing something in-between my regular solo shows and an interview. We’re calling it a discussion and I’m bringing my bestie Addi Black on board to have a light-hearted super casual chat about saying no, so we can say yes.

We’re complete and utter opposites so we come at it from two different perspectives - both totally valid. From people-pleasing to piling too much on to your plate, we all end up saying yes to things we shouldn’t.

Here’s what we learned.

We’ve all done it. We’ve all gotten caught up and headed down a direction and next thing we know we wake up to find ourselves super unsatisfied and wondering how we get to where we are.

Or maybe you just have a weird feeling you can't shake about what you're doing.

Or maybe you’re having a hard time even know what you SHOULD be doing.

This can be an indicator that you need to shift. Maybe you need to shift what you're doing, maybe you need to shift your mindset, or maybe you need to shift your mission altogether.

We get to hear from Olivia Corin and how she did just that. She made a huge pivot in her business. She gives the nitty-gritty of exactly what that looked like and how much of a difference it made in her business and how you can have the courage and the insight to navigate pivoting in your own life.

We're gonna look at the creative cycle and all of the challenges that come along with it — doubt, questioning, exhaustion, stagnancy. Why do we all experience these feelings? Could it be that they’re here for a reason? We’ll deconstruct the creative cycle and learn how to shift our perspective from a backward outlook to a forward outlook. And we’ll see how we can fully take advantage of every stage of the process.

In this first-ever episode, I'll give you the vision for this podcast, what it WON'T be about, and what even is Odd Reform as a company and what we have planned for the future.

THEN in the meat of the episode we'll dissect the two major stages of creativity and get some clarity on how we can better identify what is holding us back. Then we can really begin to use it in our everyday lives.
