This is the 4th episode of the Survivors Have Paid Enough series, where we explore eight areas of health and dive into how survivors of sexual violence have all areas of their lives impacted by the trauma they’ve experienced.

We started this series by exploring how mental health is affected by sexual violence. We started by taking a deep dive into PTSD. We followed up with last month’s episode, where we explained what some symptoms of PTSD look like.

This episode, we are specifically looking at another facet of impact to mental health through two PTSD symptoms—anxiety and depression. We’ll look at how these manifest, the interplay between the two, and what it looks like to take steps to address them.

We’re going to look at some additional ways mental health is impacted as a result of PTSD. We’re going to look at the prevalence of nightmares and flashbacks, catastrophizing and feeling an impending sense of doom, and harmful or unsettling fantasies. We’re going to chat about how these things directly impact a survivor’s everyday life and how a person can manage in a healthy way.

This is our last episode of the Understanding LTS Workshops series. Each month, we are going through the topics that we discuss in our workshop sessions as a way to help supporters understand our experiences and survivors of sexual violence to feel heard.

For this episode, we are discussing the concept of restoration and what it looks like to have a good life. We’ll look at why many survivors struggle to navigate what it is that they want for themselves and don’t have a clear picture of what the end state is that we are working toward. We will explore what it means to keep taking these steps and what we can hope for along the way.
