this downtempo, soulful, underground, all-vinyl dance music mix (recorded in 1997) is a tribute to DJ Pernell Morrison.
that came about when i decided to upload some of my vinyl mixes to the internet & figured I'd start with my "Slo-dance" series. reading the tracklist on the J-card for vol. 1, i realized pernell gave me 2 of the songs i'd included on the 90-min tape (this is SIDE A). cool, i thought. let me call this one a tribute mix.
who is DJ pernell?
his impact on the scene is significant. he is a key player who, in fact, helped shape NYC/NJ's soulful underground dance music scene when he started the colony/black underground dance parties. his crew, i believe, is the 1st mobile DJ crew to bring the truly unadulterated sounds of the NYC/NJ underground music scene outdoors to the coney island boardwalk. at some of his earliest parties console & even speakers were actually set up on the sands of the beach. recognize the history. respect always, to my brother, dj pernell.

also wanna thank phil d for the consignment oppty for this & other mixtapes i had recorded to sell at NYC's dancetracks records store.
Mid to late 80s house jamz from the era when vinyl and turntables still ruled. This is 4 true fans, dancers, and students of NYC/NJ's soulful underground dance music scene. Hella fun recording this one. A nice trip down memory lane. Features 15 Club Zanzibar Jams nicely blended into 47 minutes... or the approroximate time for recording and playback on one-side of a 90-minutes "TDK" or "Maxell" tape... like how we used to do back in the dayz.
DJ Tony Humphries. The master. Nuff said.
I recorded this tribute mix on 11-28-2016. Contains new and a few classic tunes. The vibe is type MELLOW and STOMPING!!!, yet very energetic, reminiscent of how Tony Humphries sometimes used to put it down on his 98.7 Kiss FM radio mastermix show and live at the legendary Club Zanzibar.
Dope vocal house grooves. I didn't go too deep with this mix so even those who don't (necessarily) like "house" music but could get with uptempo R&B should enjoy it.
Length of mix = 60-minutes or one side of a "Maxell" or "TDK" 120-minutes cassette. Like how we used to do. Sometimes, anyway. Those 120-minute joints used to pop too damn easily. LOL, LOL!
