If Your Website and Instagram Aren’t Portfolios… What Are They? For years photographers have been told the same thing:

Create a beautiful portfolio and clients will come.

But if you’ve been relying on your website and social media to simply showcase your work and you’re still not getting booked consistently, this episode is an important reality check.

Because here’s the truth most photographers eventually discover:

Your portfolio is not a marketing strategy.

Beautiful images might grab attention, but they don’t automatically lead to bookings. People don’t hire photographers just because they admire their work — they hire photographers they trust and feel confident choosing.

In this episode of the Seniorologie Podcast, we’re continuing our Marketing Reality Check series by diving into what your website and social media should actually be doing for your photography business.

Instead of acting as a digital photo album, your online presence should guide potential clients through the decision-making process. When used correctly, your website and Instagram become powerful tools that help people understand your experience, connect with your brand, and ultimately feel confident booking you.

In this episode, you’ll learn how to shift your mindset from simply displaying your work to strategically marketing your senior photography business.

In This Episode We Cover• Why simply posting beautiful images isn’t enough to get booked
• The real job of your website and how it should guide people toward booking
• How social media builds trust with seniors and parents before they ever inquire
• The difference between content that gets admiration and content that leads to bookings
• Why explaining the experience of working with you matters just as much as showing your photos

The Big TakeawayYour website and Instagram should do three things:

Guide people.
Build trust.
Help them decide to book you.

When your marketing starts doing those things, inquiries become easier and your business becomes more consistent.

Listen If You Want To• Book more senior photography sessions
• Improve the effectiveness of your website and Instagram
• Understand how to turn followers into inquiries
• Stop relying on your portfolio alone to grow your business

And if you want more help with your senior photography business, grab one of the last three spots at the Seniorologie Business Retreat in Salt Lake City, Utah July 19-22! Ep 179: What we are not doing in 2026 if we want to get booked by seniorsIf you’re frustrated about not getting booked for senior sessions, this episode might sting a little.

Because in 2026, we are not using our websites and social media like portfolios and expecting inquiries to magically roll in.

Pretty photos are not a marketing plan.

In this episode of the Seniorologie Podcast, I’m breaking down why “just posting your work” isn’t enough anymore — and what senior photographers must do differently if they want consistent bookings, stronger positioning, and real momentum in their business.

We’re talking about:

  • Why passive marketing is costing you inquiries
  • The “Jane had her senior photos taken” caption problem
  • How outdated websites quietly kill conversions
  • The difference between documentation and marketing
  • What to fix today (yes, today) to start building demand

And if you’ve been guilty of any of this? You’re not behind — you’re just ready to level up.

This episode isn’t about shame. It’s about strategy.

Key Takeaways for Senior Photographers1. Your Portfolio Is Not a Marketing StrategyA gallery of beautiful images proves you’re talented.

It does not:

  • Build authority
  • Differentiate you
  • Create urgency
  • Or explain why someone should hire you

Your website and social media should attract, connect, and convert — not just display.

  1. Documentation Is Not MarketingIf your caption says:

“Emma had her senior photos taken.”

That post only matters to Emma.

Marketing explains:

  • Why the location was chosen
  • What made the session unique
  • What nervous seniors can expect
  • What problem you solve
  • How to book

If your content doesn’t provide context or value, it’s not working hard enough for your business.

  1. If You’re Not Getting Booked, Ask Better QuestionsBefore blaming:

  2. The algorithm

  3. The economy
  4. “Seniors not booking early”

Ask:

  • Am I showing up consistently?
  • Does my messaging explain my value?
  • Is my booking process clear?
  • Does my website guide people toward action?

Silence is not strategy. Visibility and clarity win.

  1. Your Website Should Answer 4 Questions in 10 SecondsWhen someone lands on your homepage, they should immediately know:

  2. Who this is for

  3. What makes you different
  4. What kind of experience you provide
  5. What to do next

If they have to hunt for information, they will leave.

  1. What You Can Fix TodayIf this episode felt a little too accurate — good. That means it’s fixable.

Here’s where to start:

  • Audit your Instagram like a senior’s mom researching photographers
  • Rewrite your bio to clearly state who you serve and how to book
  • Update one page on your website with stronger copy and a clear call to action
  • Write your next caption with intention and value
  • Make your booking process obvious

Momentum starts with one decision.

The Bigger Shift for 2026In 2026, we are not hiding behind pretty pictures.

We are:

  • Building brands
  • Clarifying our messaging
  • Showing authority
  • Creating demand
  • And marketing like business owners

Because talent gets admired.

Strategy gets booked.

Sometimes even the best systems can fail, and boundaries you set as a photographer get tested.

In Episode 177 of The Seniorologie Podcast, Leslie shares a recent, real-life example from her business that reminded her why boundaries matter — and how to handle situations when clients push them.

This episode is perfect for senior photographers who want to:

  • Maintain professional boundaries
  • Handle unexpected client situations gracefully
  • Learn from real-life examples instead of theory

Leslie walks through:

  • Her standard process for booking seniors (questionnaire, contracts, in-person ordering sessions)
  • What happened when a senior booked and communicated mostly on their own, bypassing the parent
  • How she adapted to get a positive outcome — while still protecting her time and professionalism
  • The lessons learned and changes she implemented to prevent it from happening again

This episode shows how boundaries aren’t just rules — they’re tools to protect your business, your time, and your sanity — and why even the best processes need occasional refinement.

Episode 173: Kickstart Your Marketing in 2026 by Thinking Like a Marketer, Not Just a PhotographerMost senior photographers didn’t start their businesses because they loved marketing — they started because they loved taking photos. But if you want to build a profitable, sustainable senior photography business in 2026, there’s a mindset shift you can’t avoid.

In this episode of The Seniorologie Podcast, “Kickstart Your Marketing in 2026 by Thinking Like a Marketer, Not Just a Photographer,” Leslie Kerrigan explains why photography is only a small part of running a successful senior photography business — and why embracing marketing is the key to consistent bookings.

With over 15 years of experience building a six-figure senior photography business, Leslie shares what it really takes to grow, stay relevant, and book seniors year after year.

What You’ll Learn in This EpisodeIn this episode, Leslie covers:

  • Why photography makes up only about 20% of running a successful senior photography business
  • The critical mindset shift from “photographer” to “business owner and marketer”
  • Why inconsistent marketing leads to inconsistent bookings
  • What consistent marketing actually looks like on a daily and weekly basis
  • Why waiting until bookings slow down is too late to market
  • How embracing marketing helps you grow and stay booked in 2026

Why Thinking Like a Marketer Changes EverythingMany photographers wish they could focus solely on taking photos and let marketing take care of itself. But the photographers who consistently book seniors understand something important:

Marketing isn’t something you do when you have extra time — it’s something you do because you want results.

Leslie explains why marketing one day and disappearing for a week or two doesn’t create momentum, and how building a simple, repeatable marketing rhythm leads to real growth.

A Fresh Perspective on the ‘Ideal Client’You’ve likely heard “define your ideal client” countless times. In this episode, Leslie offers a more practical way to think about it.

Your ideal client isn’t just someone who books and pays you.
Your ideal client is someone who:

  • Values the experience you provide
  • Trusts your expertise
  • Refers friends like them
  • Helps your business grow organically

When your marketing speaks directly to these clients, everything — from pricing to communication — becomes easier.

Action Step from This EpisodeTo put this episode into action, Leslie encourages you to:

  1. Identify where your best senior clients come from
  2. Look for patterns in those clients
  3. Commit to consistent marketing, even when you’re busy

Small, intentional marketing efforts done consistently will create momentum and bookings in 2026.

Mastering Social Media for Your Business with Lauren CunnighamIn the fast-paced world of social media, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by trends, analytics, and the pressure to stay consistent. On a recent episode of The Seniorologie Podcast, I had the pleasure of chatting with Lauren Cunningham, host of The So Can I Podcast and an experienced social media strategist. Lauren shared invaluable insights on leveraging social media to grow a photography business, avoid common mistakes, and create engaging content that resonates with your audience. If you’re looking to level up your social media game, this episode is packed with actionable advice.

Episode Highlights

  1. A Day in the Life of a Social Media Strategist
    • Lauren works with small businesses, including a med spa, to create content, analyze market trends, and build effective marketing strategies.
    • She emphasizes the importance of trial and error in finding what works best for each brand.
  2. Common Social Media Mistakes to Avoid
    • Lack of a Plan: Many businesses fail to create a structured posting schedule, leading to inconsistency.
    • Ignoring Analytics: Platforms like Instagram provide data on when your audience is most active—use it!
    • Not Playing the Long Game: Social media success doesn’t happen overnight. Consistency over time is key.
  3. Keys to Social Media Success for Photographers
    • Consistency Matters: Posting regularly (3-5 times per week) keeps your audience engaged and helps the algorithm work in your favor.
    • Mix Up Your Content: A combination of reels, carousel posts, and Instagram stories can showcase your work and personality.
    • Use Trends Strategically: While having a plan is essential, leaving room for timely trends can boost engagement.
  4. Creating Engaging Content That Converts
    • Behind-the-Scenes Content: Showing what happens during a shoot can build trust and excitement with potential clients.
    • Short-Form Videos Perform Best: Attention spans are short, so aim for quick, engaging clips instead of long videos.
    • Instagram Stories for Connection: While not a direct growth tool, stories help build relationships with followers and potential clients.

Actionable Takeaways

  • Develop a Weekly Plan: Set aside time each week to map out your content, ensuring a mix of education, entertainment, and engagement.
  • Leverage Instagram Stories: Post behind-the-scenes clips, client testimonials, and Q&As to foster community.
  • Optimize Posting Times: Use Instagram analytics to determine the best times to reach your audience.
  • Repurpose Content: Turn one photoshoot into multiple pieces of content, from reels to carousels to before-and-after transformations.
  • Stay Flexible: Trends change quickly—be prepared to adapt while maintaining your overall strategy.

Final Thoughts Social media can feel like a never-ending task, but when approached strategically, it becomes a powerful tool for growing your photography business. As Lauren emphasized, consistency, adaptability, and connection with your audience are the keys to long-term success. Building a Photography Business on Relationships and Referrals with Jen DentonIn this episode of The Seniorologie Podcast, Jen Denton shares invaluable insights into building a successful senior photography business through authentic connections and strategic marketing. If you’re ready to take your photography business to the next level, Jen’s advice is a must-listen!

Jen is a contributor to The Seniorologie Bundle which includes resources from top industry experts for one low price of only $97! The Seniorologie Bundle will be available for purchase February 10!

Episode Highlights:* Why building relationships and focusing on word-of-mouth is the best form of marketing. * The power of email marketing—why it’s more effective than social media for staying front-of-mind. * The surprising shift in senior photography: increasing numbers of senior boys booking sessions. * Jen’s unique approach to growing her business with a satellite studio during the slow season. * How Jen’s business philosophy prioritizes people over photos and treats each client with kindness and flexibility.

Building a Business Based on RelationshipsJen Denton kicks off the conversation by emphasizing the importance of relationship-building in her business. Unlike many businesses that rely heavily on paid ads, Jen has built her senior photography empire solely on referrals and word-of-mouth from satisfied clients. By focusing on creating meaningful relationships with clients, Jen has seen her business thrive, and it all begins with treating people well.

She reminds us that the most effective marketing tool is how you make your clients feel. It’s not just about the photos; it’s about the experience. Jen states, “How you treat people matters,” and I couldn’t agree more. This philosophy has paid off for her in ways that go far beyond just client retention—she’s built a community that trusts her, which has been crucial for sustained success.

The Power of Email MarketingWhen it comes to marketing, Jen’s approach might surprise you—she hasn’t spent a dime on advertising since day one! While many photographers turn to social media and paid promotions, Jen has found that email marketing is the key to staying connected with clients and prospects.

Jen is quick to point out that the one marketing strategy you have complete control over is your email list. She suggests focusing on nurturing that list through regular, value-driven communication. For Jen, email marketing helps her stay top of mind, even if people don’t always open her emails. In fact, just having your name show up in someone’s inbox is enough to keep you front of mind—whether they open it or not.

But Jen’s approach to email marketing isn’t just about staying visible; it’s about being authentic and engaging. In particular, Jen focuses her email campaigns on parents rather than seniors themselves, because parents are far more likely to read (and act on) emails than the teens who may be too busy to check them.

The Growing Popularity of Senior BoysIn a market often dominated by senior girls, Jen has experienced a surprising trend: more and more senior boys are booking sessions. While she does have more girls in her portfolio, Jen finds that about half of her senior clients each year are male, which is a rarity in the industry. She’s especially proud of her work with senior boys, who often don’t get as much attention in the photography world.

Jen also shares a fun anecdote about how word of mouth among senior moms has boosted her business. She learned about a gathering of senior boy moms who were recommending Jen to others, proving that strong relationships with parents can lead to more business in unexpected ways.

Growing Through a Satellite StudioOne of the most exciting topics Jen discusses is her innovative strategy for expanding her business during the off-season. By establishing a satellite branch of her photography studio in another state, Jen has been able to keep her business going year-round. This strategy allows her to serve clients in multiple locations, giving her a way to maximize her time and revenue during slower months.

This unique approach is something Jen is excited to share, as it’s a repeatable business model that other photographers can implement to grow their business. In fact, it’s the focus of her contribution to an upcoming bundle that will be released in February. Jen will talk about how cultivating a satellite studio can help photographers build their brand and grow during their slow season, all while working smarter, not harder.

The Importance of Flexibility and KindnessThroughout the episode, Jen highlights one last key piece of advice: flexibility. Life happens to everyone, and it’s important to adapt to each client’s needs with understanding and kindness. Flexibility, along with an unwavering focus on people, is what makes Jen’s photography business stand out in a crowded market.

Jen Denton’s approach to building a photography business is a refreshing reminder that success doesn’t just come from mastering technical skills—it’s about creating an authentic, people-centered brand. By focusing on relationships, staying top of mind through email marketing, and diversifying her business model, Jen has created a thriving photography business that continues to grow and evolve.

Actionable Takeaways from Jen Denton’s Interview:

  1. Build Your Business on Relationships, Not Just Photos
    • Focus on building genuine relationships with your clients. Remember, the experience you provide and how you make your clients feel will lead to the most powerful form of marketing: word-of-mouth. Make sure your clients leave your sessions feeling valued and taken care of.
  2. Leverage the Power of Email Marketing
    • Invest in an email marketing system like Flowdesk or Mailchimp and start building your email list today. Regularly nurture this list with valuable content and updates. Even if your emails aren’t always opened, the mere presence of your name in their inbox keeps you top of mind.
  3. Prioritize Parents Over Teens in Your Email Campaigns
    • If you’re targeting senior sessions, focus your email marketing efforts on parents. They are more likely to engage with and act on emails than their teens. Create content that appeals to the parents’ concerns and interests—such as session details, pricing, and the benefits of professional photos.
  4. Diversify Your Client Base with Senior Boys
    • Don’t overlook senior boys in your marketing efforts. Jen’s business has thrived with a balanced mix of male and female seniors. Make sure to market your services to both boys and girls, offering tailored sessions that speak to their different interests and needs.
  5. Establish a Satellite Studio or Multiple Locations
    • Consider expanding your business during slow seasons by setting up a satellite studio in another location or state. This allows you to serve clients year-round, diversify your revenue streams, and maximize your time in the off-season.
  6. Be Flexible and Kind
    • Clients appreciate photographers who are flexible and understanding. Life happens, so be ready to adjust when needed. This could mean rescheduling due to unforeseen circumstances or accommodating unique client requests. Always approach your clients with empathy and a problem-solving mindset.
  7. Stay Consistent and Authentic on Social Media
    • Social media is an important tool, but don’t rely solely on it for marketing. Post consistently, but be authentic. Share behind-the-scenes moments, client stories, and photos that reflect your brand’s personality and values. Use it to stay visible, but remember that it’s just one piece of the puzzle.

By following these actionable steps, you can build a thriving photography business grounded in relationships, marketing that works for you, and a flexible approach to growing your brand. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to level up, Jen Denton’s strategies provide the perfect roadmap to success.

The Business of Photography with Annemie TonkenIn this episode of The Seniorologie Podcast, I had an insightful conversation with Annemie, a seasoned photographer and entrepreneur of This Can’t Be That Hard, about balancing the art and business sides of photography. Annemie shared invaluable tips on marketing, streamlining workflows, and the importance of intentionality in building a successful photography business.

Annemie is a contributor to The Seniorologie Bundle which will be released February 10, 2025. She is contributing The Photographer’s Business Plan Glow-Up and I can’t wait for yall to get your hands on this! Normally this is $97 by itself but with the Seniorologie Bundle you can get this and 20 other resources from educators to help you with your business for just $97!

Episode Highlights1. The Power of Email Marketing
Annemie emphasizes email as the cornerstone of her marketing strategy. * Email allows you to own your audience, unlike social media platforms, which can change algorithms or policies. * It’s a great tool to build trust and stay top of mind for potential clients. 2. Best Practices for Email Marketing * Start an email list as early as possible. * Send emails twice a month to ensure consistency without overwhelming your audience. * Think of your emails as a “billboard” – even if they aren’t opened, they remind people of your brand. 3. Tools of the Trade * Annemie recommends Flodesk for its user-friendly design or ConvertKit for more robust functionality. * Repurpose email content for social media to streamline your marketing efforts. 4. The Role of AI in Content Creation * Annemie uses ChatGPT as a brainstorming tool, not a replacement for authentic writing. * It’s especially helpful for breaking through writer’s block or finding analogies and stories to make your emails and content more engaging. 5. The Donkey, Workhorse, and Unicorn Model
Annemie uses this analogy to describe business models for photographers: * Unicorn: High-end boutique service with low volume and high prices. * Donkey: Volume-based, lower-price model (e.g., mini sessions). * Workhorse: A balanced approach with mid-to-high pricing and streamlined processes.Annemie’s own business operates as a “workhorse” model, combining personalized service with efficiency and automation.

Actionable Takeaways1. Invest in Email Marketing * Focus on building and nurturing an email list as your main marketing tool. * Remember, consistency and quality matter more than frequency. 2. Streamline Your Business * Evaluate your workflows and identify opportunities to automate or simplify processes. * Tools like Flodesk and ConvertKit can help manage your email campaigns efficiently. 3. Leverage AI as a Creative Partner * Use tools like ChatGPT to brainstorm and refine ideas for your content. * It’s a great way to add depth and creativity to your emails without relying on it to do all the work. 4. Define Your Business Model * Determine which business model fits your lifestyle and goals: Unicorn, Donkey, or Workhorse. * Consider how you can align your pricing and volume with the kind of work-life balance you want. 5. Focus on Brand Awareness * Marketing isn’t just about immediate sales; it’s about staying visible and building trust over time. * Ensure your audience recognizes your name and associates it with the services you provide.

This episode is a reminder that successful businesses are built on intentional strategies and alignment with personal values. Annemie’s insights inspire us to rethink how we approach marketing and streamline our businesses while staying true to who we are.

Creating a Well-Rounded Experience for Seniors with Michelle NicholsIn this episode, Michelle Nichols of Michelle Nichols photography shares the importance of creating a well-rounded experience for seniors, not just focusing on photography but on the entire journey – from pre-session communication to post-session delivery.

Michelle started her photography business without a lot of equipment and instead worked hard to build her business, focusing on seniors and working to empower them with body positivity and help her clients feel comfortable in front of her camera. She aims to create not only high quality images but also a boutique experience for each one of her clients.

Episode Highlights: Offer a Replicable Experience Focus on the experience: Michelle suggests that creating an experience for your senior clients—one that is consistent and replicable—is a powerful way to stand out. This helps not only with organization but also ensures that every senior feels valued and special, not just another number. * Pre-session communication:* From questionnaires to Zoom calls, offering personalized prep work helps you understand your clients’ preferences, which contributes to a more tailored and enjoyable experience.

Know Your Ideal Client Who are you attracting? Understanding your ideal client and what they value is critical for effective marketing. Michelle suggests narrowing down your target audience, like athletes or fashion-forward seniors, so you can tailor your marketing strategies. * Not just the photos, but the full experience:* It’s not just about capturing great photos. The senior you attract should be someone who values the entire process, from pre-session to posing to the final product.

Use Testimonials to Gauge the Experience Let your clients’ words do the talking:* Michelle talks about the power of testimonials in your marketing. If your seniors repeatedly highlight how much they loved the experience, this is a strong signal that your marketing is resonating with your ideal clients.

Marketing through the Experience Stand out in a saturated market:* To stand out in a competitive field, Michelle advocates for marketing the experience rather than focusing purely on the final photos. By showcasing the process and how you help seniors feel confident and natural during their shoots, you provide a much stronger value proposition than photographers who focus just on the outcome.

Address Pain Points in Your Messaging Understand your clients’ fears:* Michelle also mentions how understanding your clients’ fears or past negative experiences with photographers can help you address them in your messaging. For example, many seniors are nervous about how to pose, so positioning yourself as someone who can guide them through this can be a key selling point.

Know, Like, Trust Factor on Social Media Building trust through content: When it comes to social media, Michelle recommends using the “Know, Like, Trust” approach: + Know: First, create content that introduces you to your audience. This could be a fun reel or post that introduces your personality and services. + Like: Then, nurture them by sharing educational content that helps your audience feel confident about booking you. This could include tips on what to wear, how to pose, or what to expect during the shoot. + Trust:* The final stage is building trust, where your audience feels comfortable reaching out and booking you.

Promote Your Process, Not Just Your Final Images Highlight your process:* It’s not just about showing off your beautiful photos; it’s also about demonstrating how you help your clients get to that final image. By showcasing behind-the-scenes moments or sharing the steps you take to make them feel comfortable, you can better illustrate the value of the experience you offer.

Mindful Marketing for Photographers with Andrea JonesIn this episode, Andréa Jones, a mindful marketing strategist, shares her expertise on social media marketing and how small business owners, particularly photographers, can create marketing strategies that align with their personal lives and business goals.

With a background in blogging, social media, and personal branding, Andréa discusses how photographers can better use social media to build relationships, connect with their audience, and promote their businesses while staying true to their unique style. Tune in for advice on finding your signature content, choosing the right social media platforms, and creating marketing plans that are both effective and manageable.

Episode Highlights:The Mindful Approach to Social Media:* Understanding and managing the love-hate relationship with social media. * Acknowledging emotions and setting boundaries with platforms to avoid burnout.

Choosing the Right Social Media Platform:* Why photographers should pick platforms they enjoy using rather than forcing themselves onto ones that don’t align with their strengths. * Focus on one platform at first, then diversify once you’re comfortable.

Signature Content and Consistency:* The importance of creating content that’s easy to produce and true to your brand. * Why consistency is key, even if the content feels simple or easy for you to make.

Diversifying Without Overstretching:* How to repurpose content across multiple platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest) without spreading yourself too thin. * Keep your primary focus on one platform but experiment with others as your content grows.

Actionable Takeaways:1. Identify Your Signature Content: * As a photographer, your work is inherently visual, so focus on creating content that showcases your photography style. Whether it’s carousels, reels, or stories, pick what’s easiest for you to create consistently. 2. Choose Platforms That Suit Your Style: * Don’t force yourself onto every platform—pick one that aligns with your strengths (e.g., Instagram for visual work or LinkedIn for written content) and focus on mastering it. 3. Set Boundaries Around Social Media Use: * Limit your time on social media to avoid burnout. Create a set amount of time weekly for content creation and engagement. 4. Repurpose Content Across Multiple Platforms: * When you create a piece of content, share it across several platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) to maximize reach without creating more work. 5. Be Authentic and Consistent: * Find a content style that’s easy for you to produce, stay authentic, and be consistent with your posts. This will build trust with your audience and keep your marketing manageable.

By implementing these strategies, photographers can leverage social media in a way that feels natural, avoids overwhelm, and helps them grow their business effectively.

Leveraging Client Referrals: Turn Happy Clients into PromotersToday, we’re diving into a topic that can leverage client referrals, and turn happy clients into promoters, creating your very own marketing team. Imagine your clients chatting about your amazing work at every brunch, school event, and coffee shop in town. Exciting, right? This topic is so important because word-of-mouth marketing is one of the most powerful tools you can use to grow your business organically. So, ready to turn your clients into your own personal hype squad? Let’s dive in!

Alright, so let’s start with the obvious question: Why are client referrals so powerful? Well, studies show that people trust recommendations from friends and family more than any other form of advertising. You could have the fanciest ads or the most beautiful Instagram feed, but a word from a satisfied client? That’s gold! It’s all about creating that wow factor, staying connected, and making it easy for your clients to sing your praises. So, how do you encourage client referrals?

Providing Exceptional ServiceStep one: Provide exceptional service. I know, I know, you’ve heard this a million times, but let me tell you why it’s so darn important. Imagine you’ve just finished a photoshoot, and your client walks away feeling like they’ve just had the best experience of their life. What do you think they’re going to do next? They’re going to rave about you to everyone they know! Creating that memorable experience is key, and it goes beyond just taking stunning photos.

Here’s a little secret: Over-communicate. No one likes to be left in the dark, especially when it comes to something as important as senior photos. Keep your clients in the loop at every stage. Send reminders, be clear about what they can expect, and always be available to answer their questions.

And don’t forget the little things – a warm welcome, a fun and relaxed photoshoot atmosphere, and a quick turnaround time for their photos. Oh, and don’t forget the power of a handwritten thank you note! It’s those personal touches that make clients feel valued and excited to talk about you.

I’m going to let you guys in on a little secret. I may not be the best senior photographer in the world, but what I am good at is giving my clients exceptional customer service and an exceptional senior portrait experience, so that I get reviews like this one:

“This is our second time using Leslie for senior photos, as we had a graduate in 2020 as well. I couldn’t imagine using anyone other than Leslie to photograph my daughters. The time Leslie spends during the initial session planning the outfits, locations, and what matters most to capture in the photos for both our daughter and us is beyond what anyone could ask for. Leslie is so friendly, helpful, caring, and clearly loves what she does. She made my daughter feel so comfortable and beautiful that Victoria’s natural confidence came shining through. There is no better feeling for a mom than to see your daughter light up and see herself as you do.

Leslie’s attention to details, lighting, hair/makeup, and locations cannot be beaten by anyone else. LKP is, in my opinion, the best there is. Leslie takes the time to listen, answer questions, and responds promptly in everything she does. The reveal that Leslie does when the photos are ready is like a red-carpet moment—you’ll want every photo! She also took the perfect shot of Victoria and our Golden Doodle, Poppy so that she can frame the photo and take it with her to college, giving her the comfort of home. Don’t hesitate to book LKP.”

Creating a Referral ProgramAlright, moving on to step two: creating a referral program. This is where you get to flex your creative muscles a bit. Think about a reward system that would excite your clients. Maybe it’s a discount on their next photoshoot, a free print, or even a gift card to their favorite coffee shop. The goal here is to incentivize them to spread the word about your fabulous services.

But remember, it has to be something they actually want. Giving away a year’s supply of pickles might not be the best choice – unless, of course, your clients are pickle enthusiasts!

Here’s how you can start: after your client’s photoshoot, follow up with an email thanking them and introducing your referral program. Make it super easy for them to refer you – provide a referral code or a simple link they can share. And always, always make sure to thank them for their referral. Gratitude goes a long way in building those lasting relationships.

Maintaining Client RelationshipsSpeaking of relationships, let’s talk about step three: maintaining client relationships. This is probably the most fun part for me because it’s all about staying connected and showing genuine interest in your clients’ lives. Social media is a fantastic tool for this – follow your clients, like their posts, comment on their milestones. It’s these little interactions that keep you top of mind.

You can also send out newsletters or holiday cards. And don’t underestimate the power of a quick check-in email. Something as simple as “Hey, just thinking about you! Hope all is well!” can make a huge impact. When clients feel remembered and appreciated, they’re more likely to refer their friends and family to you.

And let’s not forget about social proof! Encourage happy clients to leave reviews on your website or social media pages. Those glowing testimonials are gold – they build credibility and make new clients more likely to book with you.

Pro tip: Feature your clients on your social media. Share their photos and tag them. Not only will they love the recognition, but their friends and family will see your work too. It’s like a mini portfolio review every time you post!

Let’s recap, shall we? Providing exceptional service, creating a referral program, and maintaining client relationships are your secret weapons to turning happy clients into your biggest promoters.

Sounds doable, right? It’s all about making your clients feel valued and appreciated. When they feel that, they’ll naturally want to share their positive experiences with others. And voila, you have a referral engine driving business straight to your door!

And there you have it – Leveraging Client Referrals: Turn Happy Clients into Promoters

Your happy clients are your best promoters, so make sure you show them the love they deserve!

Balancing Creativity and Business: Finding the Sweet Spot as a Senior PhotographerHave you ever felt like you’re juggling two completely different worlds – the creative wonderland of photography and the nitty-gritty, sometimes tedious, business side? If you’re nodding your head right now, you’re not alone. Today, we’re diving deep into “Balancing Creativity and Business: Finding the Sweet Spot as a Senior Photographer.” Now, I know what you’re thinking – “Leslie, is it even possible to balance these two?” Spoiler alert: Yes, it absolutely is! And I’m here to share some strategies that can help you strike that perfect balance between the two. So let’s dive in!

Time for some real talk. We got into this business because we love photography. Capturing those incredible moments – that’s what fuels our passion. But then, reality hits. There’s the whole business side of things – managing clients, handling finances, marketing, and let’s not forget social media. The question is: How do we balance this? How do we keep our creative juices flowing while also making sure the business side of things doesn’t fall apart?

Time Management TipsFirst up, let’s talk about time management. One of the golden rules is to create a schedule that works for you. And I don’t mean a rigid, military-style timetable—unless that’s your thing, then by all means! I mean a flexible but structured plan that prioritizes both your creative shoots and business tasks. Time management is your best friend when it comes to balancing creativity and business.

  1. Set Clear Goals:

Start by setting clear, actionable goals. Whether it’s finishing a client gallery or drafting your next social media post, break your tasks into smaller, manageable chunks. Write them down and prioritize them. And remember, a goal without a plan is just a wish!

  1. Use a Planner:

Whether it’s a good old-fashioned paper planner or a digital app, having a place to organize your tasks can be a lifesaver. I personally love my color-coded planner – it keeps me on track and lets me see where I’m spending my time.

  1. Time Blocking:

This has been a game-changer for me. Set aside specific blocks of time for different activities. For example, you could reserve mornings for client meetings and afternoons for editing photos. By dedicating specific times to different tasks, you’ll find it easier to switch between your creative and business hats.

  1. Prioritize:

Make a list of your top priorities each day. This can help you focus on what really matters and avoid getting overwhelmed with a never-ending to-do list. Because not every task is created equal!

I recommend using the 80/20 Rule. Focus on the 20% of tasks that bring in 80% of your results. This can help you avoid getting bogged down by less important tasks and keep your eye on the prize.

Delegating TasksNow, let’s talk about delegating. I know, I know—you’re probably thinking, “But Leslie, no one else can do it like I do!” And you’re right. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to do everything. The key is to delegate tasks that are time-consuming but not necessarily requiring your unique touch.

  1. Outsource Editing:

I know your creative soul might scream at this suggestion, but hear me out. Outsourcing your editing to a trusted professional can free up so much of your time. Time that you can use to shoot more, market better, or even (gasp!) take a break.

  1. Hire an Assistant:

Consider hiring an assistant, even if it’s just part-time. They can help with administrative tasks like scheduling, invoicing, and social media management. It’s like having an extra set of hands—or an extra you!

  1. Use Automation Tools:

There are some fantastic automation tools out there that can handle everything from email marketing to social media posting. Tools like Honeybook or Convertkit can streamline your processes and save you valuable time.

Investing in Your Creative GrowthLastly, creativity is the heartbeat of your business. Without it, we’re just another photographer with a camera. So, how do you keep those creative juices flowing while managing a successful business?

  1. Attend Workshops and Conferences:

Invest in your education. Workshops and conferences are not only great for learning new techniques but also for networking with other photographers. Plus, they’re super fun and can be a great source of inspiration.

Speaking of Conferences…If you are looking for an in-person retreat, I’m hosting the Seniorologie Spokesmodel Retreat from November 11-13 in Charleston, SC, and I would love for you to join us! This retreat combines education with amazing styled shoots, networking, support, beautiful accommodations, and more!

You will also have the opportunity to photograph my senior models, so you have content to advertise your program.

This luxurious three-day retreat is the perfect chance to push your creativity while planning a profitable and successful spokesmodel program for your business. There are only 5 spots left, so click here to find out more and apply today!

Click here to register, but hurry—spots are running out fast!

  1. Personal Projects:

Take on personal projects that excite you. These projects can be a playground for your creativity without the pressure of client expectations. They can also add a unique touch to your portfolio and show your clients that you’re constantly evolving.

  1. Stay Inspired:

Finally, keep your inspiration tank full. Follow other photographers, read books, watch movies – whatever it takes to keep your creativity alive. Surround yourself with things and people that inspire you.

Finding the Sweet SpotBalancing creativity and business is a dance, and like any good dance, it takes practice to find your rhythm. The key is to have strategies in place that allow you to nurture both aspects of your business. By managing your time effectively, delegating tasks, and investing in your creative growth, you can find that sweet spot where both your business and creativity thrive.

And there you have it – some solid strategies for finding the perfect balance between creativity and business as a senior photographer.

It’s all about finding what works for you and tweaking as you go along.

How to Make Quarter 4 The Most Successful Yet as a Senior PhotographerToday, we’re diving into one of my favorite topics – How to Make Quarter 4 The Most Successful Yet as a Senior Photographer. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Leslie, how can I top what I’ve already done this year?” Well, let’s just say that Q4 is like the holiday season of senior photography – it’s the perfect time to pull out all the stops and finish the year with a bang! So, grab your favorite pumpkin spice latte, and let’s dive in!

Alright, let’s get right into it. First things first – preparation for peak season. Think of Q4 as your photography Super Bowl. You wouldn’t walk onto the field in sweatpants and hope for the best, right? You’d plan, strategize, and bring your A-game. The same goes for your photography business.

Preparing for Peak SeasonPreparation is key. It’s like charging your phone before a long day – without it, you’re going to run out of juice fast. So, here’s how to prepare:

  1. Review and Reflect: Take a moment to look back at what worked well in the first three quarters. What were your most popular sessions? Which marketing strategies brought in the most clients? Reflect on these successes and think about how you can replicate them in Q4.
  2. Update Your Portfolio: Freshen up your website with recent work. High school seniors (and their parents!) love seeing the latest trends and styles. Make sure your portfolio highlights your best work and showcases a variety of looks and locations.
  3. Gear Check: Just like you wouldn’t want your car to break down on a road trip, you don’t want your camera gear failing during a shoot. Check your equipment, backup your files, and make sure everything is in top shape.
  4. Organization is Key: Your calendar should look like a well-orchestrated symphony, not a chaotic rock concert. Use tools like Google Calendar or a good ol’ fashioned planner to map out your shoots, editing time, and client meetings.
  5. Communication is Your Best Friend: Send out reminders and confirmations to your clients. An organized photographer is a happy photographer, and a happy photographer equals happy clients.

Trends and ThemesNow that we’re prepped, let’s talk trends and themes. Just like fashion, photography trends can change quicker than the latest TikTok dance craze. Staying current will make you the go-to photographer. It’s 2024, so we’re talking TikTok, Instagram Reels, and whatever new social media platform seniors are raving about. They love to be on the cutting edge and want their photos to reflect that.

Here are some of the hottest trends we’re seeing for Q4:

  1. Seasonal Colors and Backdrops: This fall, it’s all about warm tones, cozy vibes, and incorporating elements of nature. Think rustic settings, golden hour magic, and a pop of autumn leaves. And hey, if you want to add a little humor to your holiday sessions, bring out the ugly Christmas sweaters for a fun, quirky twist. Trust me, it’ll be a hit on social media.
  2. Personalized Sessions: More and more seniors want their sessions to reflect their personalities and hobbies. Do they play sports? Do theater? Love to read? Incorporate these elements into their sessions.
  3. Behind-the-Scenes Content: One theme that’s really catching on is the “day in the life” idea. How about sharing a “day in the life of a senior photographer”? This gives potential clients a fun peek into your world and shows them the passion you bring to your shoots. You could also get a member of your senior model team to share what a day in their life looks like, especially when they’re prepping for a shoot. These genuine snapshots create a more relatable and down-to-earth vibe, helping your audience connect with the real people and stories behind your brand.

Key Ways to Market and PromoteOkay, so your calendar is prepped, and you’ve got your trends down. Now, let’s talk marketing and promotion. Because having a full calendar doesn’t happen by accident, it happens by design.

Here are some key strategies to fill up your Q4 calendar:

  1. Social Media Blitz: Think of your social media as your personal megaphone. Use it to announce special promotions, share client testimonials, and post sneak peeks of recent sessions. Add in those seasonal hashtags – #FallSeniorPhotos, #ClassOf2024, and so on. And don’t forget about stories and reels – they’re like the espresso shot of social media, quick and effective!
  2. Email Campaigns: Create an engaging email campaign that builds anticipation. Think of it as a countdown to the holiday season. Offer early bird specials for those who book their sessions in advance. For example, “Book your session now and be entered to win a free mini holiday shoot!” It’s a win-win.
  3. Collaborate with Local Businesses: Consider collaborations. Partner with local makeup artists, and hairstylists. Create styled shoots and cross-promote each other’s services. It’s all about building a community and expanding your reach.
  4. Referral Programs: Offer incentives for your past clients to refer their friends. A small discount or a free print can go a long way in generating new business.
  5. Holiday Mini-Sessions: Offer limited-time mini-sessions for back-to-back bookings. It’s like a photography flash sale – quick, efficient, and super appealing to seniors and their parents.
  6. Leverage Your Senior Model Team: These amazing ambassadors are your secret weapon. Encourage them to share their experiences, tag your account, and even bring friends to shoots. Word-of-mouth marketing through these influencers can make all the difference!

Are you Ready to Scale? – Taking Your Photography Business from Good to GreatHave you ever felt like your photography business is sort of stuck on a treadmill? You’re hustling day in and day out, booking clients, snapping those memorable shots, but it feels like you’re running in place? Today, we’re tackling that exact feeling with our episode: “Are you Ready to Scale? – Taking Your Photography Business from Good to Great.” Why is this important? Well, if you want to elevate your business, attract higher-end clients, and offer premium services, then scaling your business is the next logical step. Trust me, if you’ve been comfortable where you are, that comfort zone is about to undergo a much-needed makeover. So let’s dive in!!

Alright, we’re kicking things off by talking about what scaling your business actually means. Scaling isn’t just about working harder or longer hours. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It’s about working smarter, and creating systems that allow you to grow without burning out.

So, how do you know if you’re ready to scale?

Picture your photography business as a house. You’ve laid the foundation, the walls are up, and things are looking pretty good. Now, you want to add that second story, the pool in the backyard, and maybe even a home theater. Basically, you want to go from cozy to WOW – and that requires strategic planning.

Assess Your Current StateFirst, we need to take a good, hard look at where your business currently stands. Think of this as a wellness check for your business.

Grab your favorite notebook, and jot down some key points about your current situation. Ask yourself:

  • Are you consistently booking clients?
  • Is your business attracting your ideal clients?
  • Do your clients rave about the services you offer?
  • How satisfied are you with your pricing and profit margins?
  • Consider your workflow: Are you spending too much time on tasks that could be automated or delegated?

Okay, if you’re nodding along and thinking, “Yep, I have some gaps to fill,” don’t worry! We’re going to tackle those one by one.

Understanding your starting point is important because it will help you identify areas that need improvement. Trust me, I’ve been there. I started out just taking photos of my kids for fun, and I had no idea it would grow into a thriving business. However recognizing where I was allowed me to pinpoint what I needed to change.

Identifying Your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)Next up, let’s talk about your Unique Selling Proposition or USP. Basically, what sets you apart from every other senior photographer in your area? Is it your editing style, your client experience, the way you capture genuine emotions, or maybe even the little goodies you give your clients after a shoot?

You need to zero in on what makes you, YOU. Here’s a little exercise: write down five things that you think differentiate your business. Then, ask five of your clients why they chose you. Compare notes and find the common threads. This will help you shape your marketing message and attract clients who value what you offer.

Premium Services and PackagesNow onto offering premium services. This is like upgrading from economy to first class. Scaling your business isn’t just about taking on more clients—it’s also about increasing the value of what you offer. Think about what additional services you can offer that would create an unforgettable experience for your clients. Because when they feel special and well taken care of, they are more likely to spread the word about your services.

One way to do this is by offering premium packages. For example, include a pre-session consultation where you chat about outfits, settings, and themes. Clients love feeling pampered and involved in the creative process.

Another idea is to offer professional hair and makeup services as part of your packages. This not only elevates the overall experience but also ensures your photos turn out even more stunning.

Also, consider adding options like personalized photo albums, on-location shoots at exclusive venues, or even a behind-the-scenes video of the photo session. If you’re not already offering packages, now’s the time to start. Create tiered packages that offer increasing levels of value and exclusivity. This not only attracts higher-end clients but also provides options for different budgets.

Don’t forget those thoughtful touches like thank-you notes or small gifts; they make clients feel valued and appreciated.

Attracting and Booking Higher-End ClientsHow do you attract these higher-end clients, taking your photography business from good to great? Well, it’s all about positioning. Your branding, website, social media presence, and even the way you communicate with potential clients need to scream quality and professionalism.

Your website should look polished and easy to navigate. Use high-quality images, and testimonials from satisfied clients, and make sure your contact information is easily accessible. On social media, share behind-the-scenes content, client testimonials, and sneak peeks of your shoots. Engage with your audience by asking questions, responding to comments, and being active on stories. Remember, people buy from people they feel connected to.

Streamlining for EfficiencyScaling your business means working smarter, not harder.

  1. Automation: Use tools to automate your booking, invoicing, and even social media posts. Tools like HoneyBook or Dubsado can be lifesavers.
  2. Delegation: Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks. Whether it’s hiring an assistant, outsourcing your editing, or even getting a social media manager, it’s okay to accept help.
  3. Education: Keep learning! Whether it’s through online courses or attending workshops, the more you know, the more you can grow.
  4. Mindset Shift: Start viewing yourself not just as a photographer, but as a creative entrepreneur and a business owner. Know your worth and don’t be afraid to set higher prices that reflect your expertise and the quality of your services.

Mindset ShiftLastly, when it comes to taking your photography business from good to great let’s talk mindset. Scaling your business from good to great requires a shift in how you think about your time and your worth. Stop thinking of yourself as “just a photographer.” You are a business owner and a creative entrepreneur, and you deserve to be compensated for your talent and hard work.

Don’t be afraid to set higher prices. The right clients will see the value and be willing to pay for it. Remember, it’s not about working harder but working smarter. Focus on high-quality, high-value clients rather than trying to book as many sessions as possible.

Practical Steps to ImplementAlright, let’s wrap up by recapping the steps we covered in this episode that you can start implementing today:

  1. Audit Your Business: Take a good, hard look at your business to identify gaps. Ask yourself: Are you booking consistently? Attracting ideal clients? Happy with your pricing and workflow? This will help you pinpoint areas of improvement.
  2. Update Your Packages: Create tiered packages with clearly defined benefits. Make sure your highest package offers exclusive perks that will attract high-end clients.
  3. Attract and Book Higher-End Clients: Offer an elevated experience from the first point of contact to the final delivery of photos. This could include personalized consultations, beautifully packaged prints and albums, and thoughtful touches like thank-you notes or small gifts.
  4. Streamlining for Efficiency: Work smarter by automating tasks, delegating duties, and continuously learning to keep growing!
  5. Mindset Shift: Start viewing yourself not just as a photographer, but as a creative entrepreneur and a business owner. Know your worth and don’t be afraid to set higher prices that reflect your expertise and the quality of your services.

And there you have it – Taking Your Photography Business from Good to Great.

As we wrap up today’s episode, here’s a final photography food for thought: Scaling your business isn’t just about making more money; it’s about creating an experience that sets you apart and makes your clients feel like a million bucks. When you focus on providing exceptional value, the rest will follow.

Shocking Stats: 80% of Photographers Miss Out on This Simple Marketing TrickToday, I’m sharing something that completely blew my mind—a staggering 80% of photographers miss out on this simple marketing trick. Can you guess what it is? Blogging! Yep, that’s right. Blogging can amplify your visibility and help you create genuine connections with your clients. Curious to know why blogging is such a game-changer and how you can dive in? Buckle up for today’s episode, as we take a closer look at how blogging might just be your secret weapon to boost your photography business!

Let’s talk about something straightforward but often overlooked: blogging. Yes, you heard that right—blogging! You might think it’s something every marketer would suggest, and maybe it feels a bit 2005 to you, but here’s the deal—blogging is an immensely powerful tool that helps build connection, boosts your SEO, and showcases your unique style and expertise.

1. Why Blogging?First things first, let’s talk about why blogging isn’t dead! In the vast sea of photographers, especially in the senior photography market, standing out is key. A blog gives you your very own platform to share not just your stunning images but also your personal voice. It helps you connect with your audience on a deeper level—showcasing your personality, your passion, and your expertise. Imagine your future clients reading your blog and feeling like they already know you before they even meet you!

2. SEO BenefitsFrom an SEO perspective, blogging is pure gold. Search engines love fresh content, and each blog post is the perfect opportunity to optimize for the exact keywords that your ideal clients are searching for. Every time you post, you’re basically telling Google (and other search engines), “Hey, I’m here, and my website is active and ready to be ranked!” It’s like giving your site a little SEO boost every single time. Isn’t that amazing?

3. Showcasing Your WorkEach session you blog about is more than just a post—it’s a showcase, not only for prospective clients but also for their friends and families. When you share these blog posts on social media or when others share them, it amplifies your reach far beyond traditional marketing methods. It’s like word-of-mouth on steroids! Every share is a potential new client who gets to see just how fabulous your work truly is.

4. Building RelationshipsBlogging isn’t just about the pictures; it’s about building relationships. When you share stories about your photo shoots, talk about the experiences, and sprinkle in little details about your wonderful clients, it makes future clients see the personal connection you can offer them. It’s not just about selling a service; it’s about creating a whole experience. People will feel more connected to you and will be excited to reach out!

5. Tips to Get StartedSo, how can you start using this simple marketing trick? Here’s my friendly and super-easy blog starter pack just for you:

  • Set up a blog: You can do this on your existing website or use platforms like WordPress or Blogger. Trust me, it’s simpler than it sounds!
  • Plan a content calendar: Consistency is key. Plan ahead so you always have fresh content.
  • Write about what you love: Feature each session, share personal insights, tips for shoots, and more. Let your passion shine through!
  • Use lots of visuals: Your beautiful photos are what will draw readers in. Make sure to showcase them!
  • Optimize each post for SEO: Choose the right keywords, use meta descriptions, and don’t forget those alt tags on images. Your future clients are out there searching for you!

And here’s a bonus tip: Don’t be afraid to get personal and have fun with your blog posts. Your readers want to see the true you, not just the polished, perfect facade. Share your failures, your learning moments, and the little quirks that make your photography truly unique.

Common Concerns and How to Overcome ThemNow, I know some of you might be thinking, “But I’m not a writer!” or “I don’t have the time to blog!” Guess what? You don’t have to be the next Shakespeare to write a compelling blog post, and you can totally fit it into your busy schedule with a bit of planning!

“I’m Not a Writer”You don’t need a literature degree to blog effectively. Write as if you’re having a conversation with a friend. Keep it light, relatable, and true to your voice. Need a little inspiration?: You can also use AI to help get you started or brainstorm ideas. If grammar isn’t your thing, there are tools like Grammarly to help you out. Plus, the more you write, the better you’ll get at it!

“I Don’t Have Time!”Ah, the classic time crunch problem. But here’s a little secret: You can repurpose your content! Use snippets from your blog for social media captions, create a quick behind-the-scenes video for Instagram stories, or even transform your blog posts into newsletters. It’s all about working smarter, not harder.

Fun and Creative Blog Post IdeasFeeling inspired yet? Here are some fun and creative ideas on how to use blogging as a simple marketing trick:

  • Client Spotlights: Feature a client and their session. Share their story and your favorite moments from the shoot.
  • Behind-the-Scenes: Give a sneak peek into a day in your life as a photographer. People love getting an insider’s view!
  • Tips and Tricks: Share your expert advice on preparing for a photo shoot, posing tips, or how to choose the perfect outfit.
  • Seasonal Themes: Have fun with holiday-themed posts, seasonal shoots, and special event photography.
  • Personal Stories: Share your journey as a photographer, the challenges you’ve overcome, and what keeps you inspired.

Blogging might seem like just one more thing on your already long to-do list, but it’s honestly one of the most important tools you can use to grow your photography business. It lets you connect with clients, improve your search engine rankings, and showcase your amazing work. And remember, you’re not just a photographer; you’re a storyteller, and your blog is your stage.

Blogging isn’t just about writing; it’s about communicating. It’s about turning your silent portfolio into an engaging, interactive format that draws clients in. So, if you’re not blogging yet, why not give it a go today? You’ve got the stories, the expertise, and the passion. Now, it’s time to let the world see it!

And there you have it – Shocking Stats: 80% of Photographers Miss Out on This Simple Marketing TrickI hope you’re walking away with a renewed perspective on the power of blogging and feeling motivated to start or revive your own blog.

How to Be an Influencer for Your Own Photography BrandToday, we’re diving into a super exciting topic: How to Be an Influencer for Your Own Photography Brand. Why is this important, you ask? Well, if you’re not willing to be the biggest cheerleader for your brand, how can you expect anyone else to be? Stick around as we unpack the secrets to promoting yourself and ensuring your brand stands out in the crowded market. Now let’s dive in!!

First things first – if you haven’t had a chance to listen to last week’s podcast episode, “What’s Wrong With Your Social Media Strategy,” hit pause on this and go check it out. The two go hand in hand, like peanut butter and jelly. We tackled common pitfalls and how to revamp your approach to connect more effectively with your audience. Did you do your homework from last week? Quick recap:

  1. Check the last time you posted a picture of yourself.
  2. Stop posting only static photos—experiment with carousels, reels, and stories.
  3. Look at your analytics. They’re there to help you grow! Trust me, both episodes together are like a power duo for your social media game.

So, let’s start with the basics: What exactly does it mean to be an “influencer” for your own brand? Now, when we hear the word influencer, we often think of those social media stars promoting everything from the latest skincare craze to exotic vacation spots. But today, I want you to put on a different hat! Imagine yourself as that influencer—but here’s the twist: instead of promoting random products, you’re shining a spotlight on something much closer to your heart—your photography business!

Becoming Your Own Brand InfluencerBeing your own brand influencer means truly embodying the essence of your personal brand and representing it across every platform you can think of—whether it’s Instagram, Facebook, your blog, or even those face-to-face interactions at coffee shops or community events. It means becoming so aligned with your brand that when people see your amazing work, they immediately think, “Oh, that’s totally [Your Name]!”

Why Is This So Important? If you’re not actively out there promoting and believing in your own brand, why would anyone else? Think about it—your enthusiasm and belief in your work are like a magnetic force. They’re contagious, and they’re key to attracting and retaining your ideal senior clients.

Here’s how you can start being an influencer for your own photography brand today:1. Know Your Brand Inside Out: You can’t promote what you don’t understand. Define what makes your brand unique—your style, your voice, your values. What do you stand for? Who do you serve? Answer these questions with passion and let these answers guide every message you put out into the world.

2. Show Up Consistently: Whether it’s posting on social media, updating your blog, or networking in person, consistency is your best friend. The more visible you are, the more memorable your brand becomes. Think of it like this: every time you show up, you’re planting little seeds in the minds of your audience.

3. Create Valuable Content: Share tips on choosing outfits for shoots, the best locations in your area, or even behind-the-scenes peeks into a photo session. Let your potential clients see and appreciate the wealth of knowledge and the passion you bring to every shoot.

4.Engage Genuinely: Respond to comments, messages, and emails with warmth and authenticity. Show your potential clients that there’s real passion and a real person behind the brand. This genuine engagement helps build trust and loyalty like nothing else.

5. Lead by Example: Show off your success and your happy clients! Share testimonials, client interviews, and those magical before-and-after shots. These are incredibly influential. They not only demonstrate your skill but also the wonderful experience of working with you.

Let’s Take It FurtherTo really thrive as the influencer of your own brand, let’s sprinkle in a few more strategies:

Collaborate with Others: Team up with local businesses, influencers, or even fellow photographers for events or social media takeovers. Collaboration expands your reach and introduces your brand to new audiences.

Stay Authentic: Don’t be afraid to show the real you. Share your journey, including the ups and downs. People connect with people, not just polished pictures. Share the behind-the-scenes struggles and triumphs—it’s all part of what makes your brand relatable and authentic.

Use Video: Video content, whether it’s live streams, Instagram stories, or YouTube tutorials, creates a more personal and engaging connection. Show your personality, and your workflow, or even do Q&A sessions where you answer your audience’s burning questions.

Ask for Feedback: Encourage your clients to share their experiences and suggestions. Not only does this make them feel valued, but it also provides you with insights on how to improve and evolve.

Celebrate Your Milestones: Did you reach a follower milestone? Complete a major project? Celebrate it! Share your successes with your audience and thank them for their support. It makes them feel like they’re part of your journey.

Be a Lifelong Learner: Continuously invest in your own growth. Attend workshops, read books, listen to podcasts (like this one!), and never stop learning. Your passion for growth will translate into a more vibrant and dynamic brand.

Putting it All TogetherBeing an influencer for your own brand isn’t just about showing up; it’s about showing up with intention, passion, and a sprinkle of your unique magic. It’s about weaving your personal touch into every facet of your business so that when people see your work, they instantly recognize and connect with you.

Here’s some food for thought as we wrap up: Being an influencer starts with believing in your own worth and abilities. When you truly believe in the value you bring to the table, that confidence illuminates everything you do. Your excitement becomes contagious, attracting clients who resonate with your vision.

Think of your favorite brands or influencers. What draws you to them? Chances are, it’s not just their products or services, but the passion and authenticity they radiate. You have that power, too!

And there you have it: How to Be an Influencer for Your Own Photography Brand

Being an influencer starts from within. The more you believe in your brand, the more others will be drawn to it. So shine bright and watch as your brand grows!

What’s Wrong With Your Social Media Strategy? Ever feel like your social media strategy is stuck in a time warp? It’s 2024, and if your approach still screams 2015, we need to talk. Today, we’re diving into a hot topic that could make or break your marketing game: What’s Wrong With Your Social Media Strategy? We’ll take closer look at some common pitfalls and how to revamp your approach to effectively connect with your audience.

Stuck in the Past?First up, let’s chat about Instagram. This platform has evolved far beyond a simple photo-sharing app. If your last post was a static photo with a generic caption, it’s time for a reality check. The era of reels, stories, and interactive content is here. Are you using reels to give a behind-the-scenes look at your photo shoots, or utilizing stories for daily updates and client testimonials? If not, you’re missing out on a massive opportunity to engage and attract clients.

Where Are You in Your Posts? Next, let’s talk about visibility. Are you present in your social media? And I don’t just mean your photographs. Your audience wants to connect with the person behind the lens. Showing up in your stories, going live to discuss your passion for photography, or sharing tips for seniors preparing for their shoot day can make a significant impact. Building trust is key, and when potential clients feel they know you, they’re more likely to book you.

Building Real Connections with Your Online CommunityLet’s also address the obsession with followers and likes. Sure, it’s great to see those numbers climb, but what truly matters is interaction. Are you engaging with your audience? Responding to comments, asking questions, and creating content that invites conversation? Social media is a two-way street. Posting and ghosting won’t help you build the relationships that lead to loyal clients. Remember, every follower is a potential client—or someone who can refer you to one.

A Cohesive StrategyNow, let’s talk strategy—because having a game plan is what will set you apart. Think of your social media as a puzzle; every piece needs to fit perfectly to create a cohesive brand. Here’s how you can nail that cohesive vibe:

1. Find Your Brand Vibe Your brand voice is your online personality. Are you the laid-back, fun photographer, or the inspiring, motivational type? Pick a tone and stick with it. And don’t forget the visual side—keep your color schemes and style consistent so people recognize your posts even before reading your name.

2. Show Off Your Wins Got some killer shots or amazing client stories? Share them! Highlight your best work and sprinkle in some glowing testimonials. This not only showcases your skills but also builds trust. Think of it like your highlight reel—your greatest hits album, if you will.

3. Content Buckets Think about the main topics you’ll post about—these are your content buckets. For you, it might be:

  • Behind-the-scenes snaps from shoots
  • Tips for seniors prepping for their big day
  • Showcasing local gems for photo ops
  • Awesome client testimonials

4. Plan It Out Use a content calendar to stay organized. This way, you can ensure a healthy mix of posts. Apps like Trello or Asana can be lifesavers. It’s like meal prepping, but for your social media!

5. Consistency is Key Posting regularly is crucial. Whether it’s daily, every other day, or just a few times a week, consistency keeps you on your audience’s radar.

6. Hashtags & Keywords Think of hashtags and keywords as the secret sauce that helps new people discover your posts. Mix popular and niche hashtags to reach a broader audience. Think beyond #SeniorPhotography—what else speaks to your community?

7. Cross-Promo Fun Don’t hoard all the fun on one platform. Let people know they can find you on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, or wherever else you hang out. A quick shoutout here and there can help grow your followers across the board.

8. Engage with Interactive Content People love engaging stuff—polls, quizzes, Q&As. Not only are they fun, but they also provide great insights into what your audience enjoys and values.

9. Check Your Stats Dive into those analytics now and then. Instagram Insights, Facebook Analytics, and Google Analytics are your friends here. See what’s working, what’s not, and tweak your strategy as needed. It’s like having a map for your social media journey.

Actionable TipsBefore we wrap things up, here are some quick tips you can start using right away:

  • Create a Brand Style Guide: Jot down your brand’s voice, style, and the look you’re going for. It’ll keep you consistent.
  • Batch Your Content: Spend a day creating a bunch of posts so you always have something ready to go.
  • Engage Daily: Take a few minutes each day to reply to comments and messages. It’s your chance to build those connections.
  • Analyze Monthly: At the end of each month, review your analytics. See what’s working and make adjustments.

So, take a moment to analyze your social media strategy. Are you making the most of the tools available? Are you engaging and connecting with your audience? Remember, social media is a powerful tool to showcase your unique style and to communicate directly with potential clients.

Your social media platforms are extensions of your brand. Each post, video, or story is an opportunity to make an impression. So, make sure it’s the right one!

How to Scale Your Photography Business from $300 to $3k Are you ready to transform your photography hustle into a thriving business powerhouse? Welcome to “How to Scale Your Photography Business from $300 to $3K.” Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, this guide is your ultimate resource to boost your income, book more clients, and level up your business model. From mastering the money mindset to offering irresistible prints and products, we’re diving deep into strategies that will not only increase your earnings but also elevate your brand. Get ready to shift your perspective, revamp your offerings, and watch your profits grow—let’s dive in!

Mindset Starts with YouScaling your business in the world of senior photography isn’t just about taking more pictures—it’s about creating more value, both for yourself and your clients. One of the first steps in this journey? Developing a healthy money mindset. It’s essential to believe that moving from making $300 to $3,000 is not only possible—it’s achievable.

So, let’s talk about mindset. It starts with you. Think about this: if you don’t believe in your services and products, why should your clients? To scale your income, start by scaling your beliefs. Visualize that income goal. Picture your schedule filled with bookings. Close your eyes and imagine your ideal workday. What would it look like? How many clients would you be working with? How would you feel knowing that each of those clients values your work to the tune of $3,000? This mental exercise isn’t just wishful thinking; it’s about setting the stage for real, actionable growth, and prepping your brain to recognize and chase after real opportunities, aligning your actions with your goals.

Prints and ProductsNow, onto a personal favorite: prints and products. Adding these to what you offer isn’t just about making bigger sales; it’s about making your client’s experience even more special. When clients see their photos turned into gorgeous, tangible items, they see more than just pictures—they see memories worth holding onto. And guess what? When they love what they see, they’re happy to spend more!

Think about the last time you held a beautiful print or flipped through a beautifully made photo album. There’s just something incredibly satisfying about enjoying photography in a physical form. In our super digital world, this hands-on experience becomes even more special and valuable. You’re not just selling a photo; you’re offering an experience, a keepsake, a piece of art that can be treasured for years to come.

Believing in Your OfferingsBut how do you get clients to go for these products? Here’s the thing: you have to believe in what you’re offering. If you’ve never ordered a high-quality print or a custom album for yourself, how can you show their value convincingly? Be your own ideal client. Get yourself a set of prints, hang them up in your studio, or bring a stunning album to your client meetings.

Create a sample set of these products to showcase during client consultations. Use them in your marketing materials and around your own home. When clients walk into your studio and see these gorgeous pieces on the walls or on the coffee table, it’s easier for them to picture similar items in their own homes. Show genuine excitement and pride in these offerings, and that enthusiasm will naturally rub off on your clients.

You’ll be surprised at how much easier it is to sell something you truly believe in. If you can’t imagine not having these beautiful items in your life, why would your clients feel any differently? Your belief can change their perception and create a sense of urgency and desire.

Educating Your Clients on ValueEducation is key. Take the time to explain the difference in quality between a professional print and something they might order online on their own. Show them the difference with actual samples if you can. Explain the archival quality of professional prints, the range of education involved in ensuring colors are perfect, and the craftsmanship in creating custom albums. Your mission? Make sure your clients truly get the unique value only you can bring to the table.

Marketing Your Elevated ServicesAlright, we’re halfway through, and I hope you’re feeling inspired! Remember, transforming your business from a $300 endeavor to a $3,000 powerhouse is all about mindset, offering more, and believing in what you provide.

Leveraging Social MediaNow, I want to touch on a super important aspect—marketing these products and your elevated services. Social media is a powerful tool. Showcase those stunning prints, share testimonials from clients who loved their albums, and don’t forget to tell the story behind each photo. Stories sell. When potential clients see the care you put into preserving memories, they won’t just want your services—they’ll need them.

Photos alone aren’t enough; it’s the stories behind the photos that engage potential clients. Share the stories of the seniors you photograph—their dreams, their aspirations, their personalities. Use platforms like Instagram and Facebook to go beyond just sharing images: post behind-the-scenes shots of your photo sessions, live videos where you talk about the process of creating prints and albums, and client testimonials.

Email Campaigns and Website UpdatesDon’t overlook the power of email marketing and your website. Why not create an engaging email campaign that shows off your premium products? Include stunning photos of prints and albums, some great client testimonials, and maybe even a limited-time offer to get people excited.

And about your website—make sure it truly reflects the high-quality services and products you offer. Use beautiful, high-res images, detailed but easy-to-read service descriptions, and a simple gallery that shows off your best work. When visitors check it out, they’ll instantly see the quality you provide.

Networking and Community EngagementGet involved with your local community. Team up with other local businesses like florists, makeup artists, and boutiques that cater to high school seniors for some amazing cross-promotions. Offering free mini-sessions at community events can also help you get noticed. The more people see your work and hear about your services, the more they’ll think of you when they need a senior photographer.

Word of Mouth and ReferralsDon’t forget the good old-fashioned power of word of mouth. Encourage your happy clients to spread the word by offering referral bonuses. A small discount or a special gift for referrals can make a big difference and help bring in new leads. Your current clients are often your best marketers.

Business EvaluationLastly, keep an eye on your business practices to make sure they’re helping you scale up. This means checking out your pricing strategy, reviewing your marketing efforts, and paying attention to client feedback. Be ready to make changes and stay flexible. 4 Ways to Get Your Senior Clients Ready for Their Photoshoots Getting ready for a photoshoot can be as nerve-wracking as it is exciting, especially when it comes to senior portraits. These aren’t just any photos; they’re a milestone, a celebration of steps taken and futures bright with promise. So, how do you ensure your clients look and feel their best? By prepping them properly, of course! Today, we’re diving into 4 Ways to Get Your Senior Clients Ready for Their Photoshoots. Trust me when I say, a little preparation goes a long way, transforming a good session into a spectacular one.

1. Review Outfit Choices, Props, and Locations Before Your SessionSo, let’s jump right into our first tip: Kick off your preparation by tackling the basics: outfits, props, and locations BEFORE your session. This is such a game-changer, friends!

This trio can either make or break your photoshoot. I suggest having a pre-session chat to go through various outfit options. Encourage a mix: something casual, something dressy, and something that screams ‘this is me!’ Props play a pivotal role too. musical instrument, sports gear, or something personal that tells their story, these items add a personal touch that captures your seniors’ story!

And don’t forget about scouting locations ahead of time. A great backdrop can be as crucial as the subject in front of it. Familiarize yourself with the lighting and setting so you can spend less time searching and more time shooting.

2. Create a Style Guide for ClientsNow, let’s talk about creating a style guide for your clients. This doesn’t have to be anything fancy—a simple PDF or even a Pinterest board is perfect.

Your style guide should include tips on choosing outfits that complement each other, advice on colors and patterns, and suggestions for accessories. Hair and makeup tips should also make the cut since these elements are essential for a polished look.

Your clients look to you as the expert, so don’t be shy about sharing your knowledge. A well-prepared client is a happy client!

Speaking of guides, don’t miss out on my exclusive style guide and welcome packet templates available inside my Seniorologie Shop. They’re your go-to resource for all things senior photography!

3. Discuss Posing and Expression TipsOkay, onto our third tip: discussing posing and expression tips. You might think this is something to tackle during the shoot, but oh, how a little pre-chat can change the game!

I like to have a little chat with my clients about posing and expressions before the shoot. Explain that they don’t have to be professional models and that you’ll guide them through the process.

Give them a few basic tips, like how to relax their shoulders, where to place their hands, and how to create natural-looking smiles and expressions. It’s all about making them comfortable in front of the camera.

4. Create a Day-of Checklist for ClientsLast but definitely not least, create a day-of checklist for your clients. This is a lifesaver for helping them remember everything they need to bring and do on the day of the shoot.

Your checklist should include basics like outfits, accessories, and props, but also remind them of little things like snacks and water—because hangry clients aren’t happy clients! Include reminders for hair and makeup appointments and any last-minute grooming tips like nails and eyebrows.

Sending the checklist a day or two before the session will help your clients feel prepared and reduce any last-minute stress.

And there you have it – 4 Ways to Get Your Senior Clients Ready for Their Photoshoots.

Prepping your clients is a game-changer! It makes them feel confident, look their absolute best, and ensures they have an amazing experience during their shoot. And the best part? It helps you capture those gorgeous, authentic images that will have them—and their friends—raving about your incredible work! Happy clients mean more word-of-mouth buzz for you. It’s a win-win!

How to Stay Inspired and Avoid Burnout as a Senior PhotographerFor many senior photographers, staying inspired while avoiding burnout can feel like a balancing act. If you’ve spent countless hours behind the lens, perfecting your craft, and meeting client demands, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The good news? Keeping that creative spark alive and sidestepping burnout is totally doable. Today, we’ll chat about how to stay inspired and avoid burnout as a senior photographer. Think of it as your toolkit filled with practical, actionable steps to keep your passion burning bright and give your energy a much-needed boost. So, take a deep breath, relax, and let’s dive into these handy tips!

Understanding BurnoutAlright, let’s talk about something we all face at some point – burnout. It’s that heavy feeling of being drained, uninspired, and just plain exhausted. It can sneak up on you when you’re juggling multiple clients, editing late into the night, and constantly hustling to keep your calendar full. So, how do you avoid it? And more importantly, how do you stay inspired?

How To Avoid Burnout1. Self-CareFirst things first, let’s talk about self-care. Yes, I know, it sounds cliché, but it’s vital. When was the last time you took a break just for yourself? Schedule some “me-time” into your calendar, just like you would with a client. Whether it’s a walk in the park, reading a book, or even a little Netflix binge – make sure you’re carving out time for yourself.

2. Finding Your Creative OutletsNext up, find your creative outlets. Photography is your passion, but sometimes you need to step out of your usual routine to reignite that spark. Maybe try shooting something different – landscapes, food, or even street photography. It’s amazing how a fresh perspective can invigorate your creativity.

Speaking of creative outlets…

3. Connecting with Your CommunityAnother great tip is to connect with your community. Surround yourself with other photographers who understand the highs and lows of this business. Attend workshops, join online forums, and don’t be afraid to reach out for advice or just a friendly chat. The support you’ll get from your peers is invaluable.

4. Setting BoundariesOne of the best things you can do in order to prevent burn out, stress and give yourself the freedom you deserve in your business is to say no and set boundaries!

This is a big one and often the hardest to implement. It’s easy to let work spill over into your personal time, especially when you’re passionate about what you do. But setting clear boundaries – like designated work hours and sticking to them – can make a huge difference. This will help prevent burnout and keep you feeling fresh and ready to tackle each day.

I tackled this topic in depth in a previous podcast episode. Give it a listen HERE!

5. DelegationAnd here’s a little secret from my own experience – delegate where you can. If you’re swamped with editing, consider hiring a part-time editor or using software that can help streamline your workflow. Freeing up your time from the less enjoyable tasks allows you to focus on what you love and what brings in the clients.

6. Continuous LearningAnother way to stay inspired is to keep learning. Attend seminars, read photography books, take online courses (shameless plug… I’ve put together TONS of FREE resources over on seniorologie.com to help you in your business!) – just keep expanding your knowledge. Learning new techniques or even rediscovering the basics can be inspiring and remind you why you fell in love with photography in the first place.

7. Celebrating Your WinsAnd finally, celebrate your wins, big or small. It’s so easy to move quickly from one project to the next and the next without taking a moment to appreciate all that you’ve accomplished. Finished a challenging shoot? Celebrate! Received a glowing review from a client? Celebrate! These little moments of recognition can build your confidence, boost your morale, and keep you motivated.

And there we have it, your roadmap to staying inspired and keeping burnout at bay as a senior photographer. Remember, it’s not just about taking great shots but also enjoying the journey and growing with every click along the way. Keep that passion burning bright, because at the end of the day, it’s your love for photography that will continue to drive your success.

5 Things to STOP Doing as a High School Senior PhotographerEver feel like your senior photo sessions are missing that special spark? Let’s change that. Whether you’re just starting out or are a seasoned pro, it’s time to ditch some habits that might be holding you back. Today, we’re diving into the top 5 Things to STOP Doing as a High School Senior Photographer. By avoiding these common pitfalls you’ll be on your way to creating more authentic, beautiful, and profitable senior sessions.

  1. Stop Over-Retouching Photos

Alright, let’s jump right into it. The first thing you need to stop doing is over-retouching photos. Less is more when it comes to retouching. I know, I know, it might be tempting to smooth out every little blemish and imperfection, but clients want to see themselves, not a plastic version of themselves. Your job is to enhance their natural beauty, not erase it. A little retouching is fine, but don’t go overboard. Your clients will love seeing the best version of their natural selves, and it will definitely make your work stand out.

  1. Stop Using Generic Posing

Next up, number two: Stop using generic posing. One of the biggest complaints I hear from seniors is that they don’t want their photos to look like everyone else’s. Avoid cookie-cutter poses and instead, focus on making each session unique.

Pro Tip: Get to know your client, understand their personality, and tailor your posing to fit them. This not only sets you apart from other photographers but also gives your clients a more personalized experience.

  1. Stop Ignoring Client Input

Moving on to number three: Stop ignoring client input. This is a big one! Your clients want to feel involved in the process. Ask them about their interests, hobbies, and style preferences. Encourage them to bring props or outfits that mean something to them. When clients feel like they’re part of the creative process, they’re more likely to love the final product—and refer you to their friends!

  1. Stop Neglecting Your Social Media Presence

Alright, we’re halfway through. Number four: Stop neglecting a social media presence. In this digital age, social media is your best friend. It’s not just about posting pretty pictures; it’s about engaging with your audience, sharing behind-the-scenes content, and showcasing client testimonials. Make sure you’re active on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, and don’t forget about stories and reels—they’re great for showing your personality and the fun side of your business. You can also use relevant hashtags to increase your reach! Consistency is the name of the game, so make a schedule and stick to it!

  1. Stop Relying Solely on Natural Lighting

And finally, number five: Stop relying solely on natural lighting. Yes, natural light is beautiful and can create beautiful images, but what if the weather doesn’t cooperate? Or what if you’re shooting indoors? Learning to use artificial lighting effectively can be a game-changer. It gives you more control over your shots and allows you to create different moods and effects. Invest in some good lighting equipment and take the time to learn how to use it. Your clients will appreciate your ability to adapt and produce amazing results no matter the lighting situation.

Making these adjustments can give your business a boost and help you stand out in the world of senior portrait photography. When you focus on being authentic, adding that personal touch, and being flexible, you’ll not only pull in more clients but also create experiences they’ll remember forever. Cheers to capturing amazing moments and making each senior’s big year unforgettable!

When To Go Full-Time with Your Photography BusinessWhen to go full-time with your photography business? It’s a question I know many aspiring photographers wrestle with as you dream about turning your passion into a full-time career. Today we’re chatting how to know when you’re ready to take the leap and what steps to take if you’re not quite there yet. So, whether you’re teetering on the edge of making that big decision or you are just starting to dream about it, this episode is for you.

Taking the Leap: Going Full-Time with Your Photography BusinessDeciding when to go full-time with your photography business is a massive step—a dream for many but also a source of sweaty palms and nervous excitement.

I’ve had the joy of helping countless photographers make this transition through my coaching program. And let me tell you, there’s nothing like seeing someone turn their passion into a full-time profession! Some of my students from The Seniorologie Semester have gone full-time within just a few months. They’re not just surviving but absolutely loving it—making a profit, doing what they love, and saying goodbye to old jobs.

If this sounds like something you’re interested in, keep reading. And if you want some one-on-one guidance to make your full-time photography dream a reality, send me a DM on Instagram—I’d love to help you out!

So, how do you know when it’s time to make your passion your full-time career? Let’s break it down.

Signs You’re Ready to Go Full TimeLet’s start by identifying the signs that you might be ready to take the plunge into full-time photography.

  • Consistent Income: Are you consistently making an income that matches or exceeds what you make at your current day job? This is a big one. You need to make sure you have a steady stream of income before making any drastic changes. If you’ve had several months—or better yet, a year—of consistent bookings and income, that’s a good indicator.
  • High Demand: Are you turning down clients because you’re too busy? If your calendar is constantly full and you’re having to turn away clients, it might be time to consider going full-time so you can accommodate that demand.
  • Financial Cushion: Do you have a financial cushion? Having at least six months of savings can give you the security you need to make the transition smoothly. This way, you’re not stressing about money while you’re trying to grow your business.
  • Strong Portfolio: Do you have a portfolio that not only makes you proud but also catches the eye of your ideal clients? If your work speaks to the people you want to attract, you’re on the right track! Preparing for the Full-Time LeapWhat if you’re not quite ready yet? That’s okay! There are steps you can take to prepare for going full-time.

  • Increase Your Marketing Efforts: Start by ramping up your marketing efforts. Use social media to showcase your work, engage with potential clients, and build your brand. The more visible you are, the more likely you are to attract new clients.

  • Expand Your Skillset: Consider investing in education to expand your skillset. Whether it’s learning new photography techniques or brushing up on business skills, the more you know, the better prepared you’ll be.
  • Build a Strong Network: Networking is important. Connect with other photographers, join photography groups, and attend workshops. The support and advice from a good network can be incredibly helpful.
  • Create a Detailed Business Plan: Think of your business plan as your game plan. It’s all about setting your goals, figuring out your strategies, and mapping out your financials. This will be your go-to guide to keep you on track and focused!

Mindset MattersOne of the most important aspects of going full-time is having the right mindset. Your attitude can make or break your journey, so let’s focus on getting your head in the right place:

  • Confidence: Trust in yourself and your skills. Confidence is key. If you believe you can make it, you’re already halfway there. Remember, every pro was once a newbie.
  • Resilience: Get ready to face some obstacles. Challenges will come, but how you handle them is what counts. Stay tough and keep moving forward. Each bump in the road is a chance to grow and get better.
  • Passion: Don’t forget why you started in the first place. Your love for photography will be your biggest motivator, especially during the rough patches. Let that passion keep you going strong.

I remember when I first considered going full-time with my photography business. It was a mix of excitement and fear. I had a stable job, and the thought of leaving that security was scary. But I had a consistent stream of clients, a solid portfolio, and a burning passion for photography. I took the leap, and it was the best decision I ever made.

Were there challenges? Absolutely. But each hurdle was a learning experience, and it made me a better photographer and business owner. That’s why I created this podcast and all of my Seniorologie resources… to help you do the same! Think of it as everything I’ve learned (the hard way) along the way to help you avoid the mistakes and be successful!

I hope you found today’s episode helpful and inspiring! To all my fellow photographers out there, it’s important to remember that going full-time is a journey, not a race. Everyone’s path looks different, and that’s perfectly okay. What matters is that you’re taking steps toward creating the business and life you love.

How To Serve a Client That isn’t a Perfect FitAs passionate photographers, we secretly hope that every client who walks through our doors is a dream come true. But let’s be honest, reality occasionally has other plans and throws us a curveball. Not every client will be a match made in photo-heaven, and that’s perfectly okay! It’s all part of the adventure of running a business. Today, I’m sharing some practical strategies for how to serve a client that isn’t a perfect fit, allowing you to still deliver exceptional service. Let’s turn these tricky situations into winning moments for both you and your clients. So let’s dive in!

Understanding the MismatchFirst things first, let’s figure out why things might not be the perfect fit. Is it because your styles differ? Maybe it’s a budget issue or unmatched expectations? Knowing the root cause helps you tackle the situation with a clear head.

Communication is KeyOnce you understand what’s causing the mismatch, it’s time for a heart-to-heart. Open, honest communication is a game-changer. Remember to be kind and keep it professional.

You could say something like, “Hey, I noticed you’re looking for something that’s a bit different from what I usually do. Can we chat about how we can still meet your expectations?”

Setting Boundaries and ExpectationsWe all need boundaries, right? Make sure to set them early on. Explain what you can deliver and be clear about what might not be possible. If what’s being asked doesn’t match your portfolio, explain your strengths and see how you can still include some of their ideas without straying from your brand’s identity.

Finding Common GroundLet’s find that sweet spot! For example, if a client loves candid shots and you specialize in posed portraits, why not suggest a session that mixes both styles? This way, they get what they want, and you stay true to your brand.

Offering AlternativesSometimes, it just doesn’t work out, and that’s okay. If you realize you can’t meet their needs, recommend someone else who can. This not only ensures their satisfaction but also shows your integrity.

You can say something like, “I think [Photographer’s Name] would be a perfect fit for what you’re looking for. Want me to introduce you?”

Maintaining ProfessionalismNo matter what, always stay professional. Be on time, show respect, and stick to your commitments. A strong reputation can work wonders for your business.

Turning a Challenge Into an OpportunityWorking with clients who aren’t a perfect fit can teach you a lot. You’ll learn about flexibility, patience, and client management. Use these experiences to improve your screening process and sharpen your business practices.

Feedback and ReviewAfter the session, ask for feedback. Even if things weren’t perfect, their insights are valuable and show that you care about providing top-notch service.

You could ask, “I’d love to hear your thoughts on our session and any suggestions you might have for improvement. Your feedback is important to me.”

Dealing with clients who aren’t a perfect fit doesn’t have to be a setback. With the right approach, it can be a chance to grow and learn. By understanding mismatches, communicating well, and finding compromises, you can create a positive experience and even exceed expectations.

Happy shooting!

AI For Photography…Should You Use It or Not?With tech advancing at lightning speed, the question is, AI for photography…should you use it or not? AI is making waves in the photography world. It’s changing the way we capture, edit, and even think about our images. But is it right for you? Maybe you’re curious about how AI can streamline your process or add another layer to your art. On the other hand, you might be concerned about losing that personal touch or navigating ethical waters. Let’s break it down and help you decide if AI is the right fit for your unique photography adventure!

TIP #1: Understanding AI in PhotographyFirst things first, what does AI do in photography?

AI can tackle a bunch of tasks—editing, organizing, even snapping photos! Tools like AI-powered editing software can enhance your images, reduce noise, and boost overall quality with almost no effort. But it’s important to recognize both the power and the limitations of these tools.

They can save you tons of time, but might not always capture your unique creative vision.

TIP #2: Benefits of Using AIOne of the main benefits of using AI in photography is efficiency. AI tools can automate repetitive tasks, so you can focus more on the creative aspects of your work.

One big win with AI? Efficiency! Imagine AI sorting through thousands of photos to pick the best ones or batch-editing images to perfection. This automation frees you up to focus on the fun, creative parts of your work. During busy seasons, AI can be a lifesaver, shaving hours off your workload!

TIP #3: Potential DrawbacksWhile AI offers many advantages, there are also some potential drawbacks to consider.

Relying too much on AI can strip away the personal touch that makes your work unique. Clients hire you for your style and vision, and too much automation can dull that shine. Plus, AI isn’t perfect—it can make mistakes that you’ll need to fix manually.

It’s important to find that balance between using AI while also maintaining your artistic integrity.

TIP #4: Ethical ConsiderationsLet’s talk ethics!

AI can alter images in ways that might mislead clients or misrepresent reality. Always use AI responsibly and be upfront with your clients about any changes made to their photos.

Maintaining honesty and integrity in your work will build trust and uphold your reputation.

TIP #5: Deciding What’s Right for YouSo, should you go for it? The choice is yours! AI in your photography business comes down to your personal preferences and business goals. Think about how AI can streamline your workflow without compromising your style or quality. Test out different AI tools and see how they gel with your process.

It’s all about striking a balance that works for you and your clients.

And there you have it – “AI for Photography…Should You Use It or Not?”

Deciding to bring AI into your photography business is a personal choice that depends on your workflow, artistic style, and business goals.

While AI offers big-time benefits like efficiency and time savings, it’s important to weigh the drawbacks and ethical considerations to make sure it aligns with your values and vision as a photographer.

Thanks for tuning in! I hope this chat sparked some new ideas about AI’s role in your photography journey. Whether you go full AI or stick to traditional methods, the most important thing is to stay true to your creative process and the heart of your work.

Happy shooting!

3 Ways To Market Fall Senior Sessions In SummerThink Spring is the only season for senior photos? Think again! — Let’s defy conventional wisdom and take a closer look at how the fall season can be a game-changer for your senior photography business. Today I’m sharing 3 ways to market fall senior sessions in summer to get those seniors posing in front of your camera this autumn!

We all know the traditional photography cycle – spring frenzy, summer slowdown, and fall catch-up. Many seniors wait until spring to get their photos, making it a hectic season for photographers. But what if we could mix it up? Wouldn’t it be great to have a steady stream of clients in fall, so spring isn’t as chaotic?

When I first started, every client waited until spring, right before they graduated! It was a race against time and weather to get everyone in. I was grateful for their business but, let’s be honest, it was stressful! That’s when I realized the importance of spacing out clients throughout the year. It not only eases the stress but also ensures a steady income flow, rather than a seasonal rush.

This shift didn’t come overnight. It takes consistent client education and marketing efforts. But trust me, with strategic marketing, it’s absolutely possible to have clients throughout the year, including the summer, fall, and spring.

Here’s a pro tip: Start marketing a few months before you want your clients to take action. If you want fall bookings, summer is your prime marketing time. And guess what? Summer is here now! So let’s dive into some strategies that can help you attract clients and make the most of the upcoming season.

Tip #1: Start Talking! The key to marketing fall senior sessions is to start talking about it right now! We need to convince potential clients why fall (or any other season you want to promote) is an excellent time for senior photos.

Remember, clients don’t know what they don’t know. So it’s our job to tell them. If you want them to know that you have slots for fall photo sessions or that fall is the perfect time for senior photos, start talking!

Communicate with your clients, highlight the perks of booking a fall session, show them a glimpse of what a fall senior session looks like, discuss the pros and cons, and share your availability.

The more you talk about it, the more inquiries and bookings you’ll attract! We can’t just sit back and hope that clients will spontaneously realize the charm of fall photography. We need to provide them with compelling reasons why!

Tip #2: Don’t Wait!In marketing, timing is everything. We can’t wait until the eleventh hour to start promoting our services.

Give yourself enough time to reach out to potential clients. You need a few months to effectively convey your message before you can expect clients to react.

Keep reminding potential clients about the advantages of fall photo sessions. Even if you feel like a broken record, keep at it! Not everyone will see everything we share, which is why we need to start pitching our services long before we want the action to happen.

Think of marketing fall sessions as steering a long runway that starts the previous season. Use summer to promote fall and fall/winter to market spring.

Tip #3: Create a Fall Senior Session Guide!Take your marketing beyond social media. Create a comprehensive guide dedicated to fall senior sessions! This could be a freebie to attract people to your email list or a webpage completely devoted to fall senior sessions.

Include outfit ideas, ideal locations for fall, a breakdown of fall months, and what each month offers or lacks. You can also throw in a gallery of specific locations that look gorgeous in the fall.

You can also use your previous work to showcase what actual senior sessions look like at these locations. This will help potential clients visualize what their fall senior session could look like.

4 Strategies for Turning Summer Clients into Long-Term CustomersSummer is a photographer’s busiest season, filled with sun-drenched moments and memories waiting to be captured. As clients book their warm-weather shoots, savvy photographers recognize this as a golden opportunity. When it comes to seniors, that summer before their final year is our first chance to kick off a lasting connection. They are more than just a single session – they’re potential long-term relationships that can keep your business thriving. So today we’re diving into four actionable strategies for turning summer clients into long-term customers for years to come!

By implementing the tips below, you can also nurture that senior relationship and keep it going strong all through their milestone year. This opens the door not only for multiple booking opportunities but also for turning happy clients into powerful word-of-mouth marketers. They’ll be raving about your work to their entire friend group! It’s a win-win scenario that benefits both your business and your clients.

TIP #1:Provide Exceptional ExperienceCreating memorable experiences for your clients is the foundation of building long-term relationships. Make sure every interaction, from the initial consultation to the final photo delivery, exceeds their expectations. Pay attention to the details that matter, like personalized touches, timely communication, and delivering high-quality work. When clients feel valued and special, they are more likely to return and refer you to others.

TIP #2: Offer Exclusive Loyalty ProgramsConsider implementing a loyalty program to incentivize repeat business. Offer discounts, special packages, or early access to your calendar or new services for returning clients. Typically, this means siblings of seniors you’ve photographed before or creating a special offering that allows you to capture the same senior throughout their senior year, giving you tons of opportunity to provide that client with reasons to talk about you. An example may be to create a referral program where existing clients receive a discount or credit toward another photoshoot or products from their senior session. There’s no reason why a senior client can’t be a “rep” for you without being part of a spokesmodel team.

You could also introduce a membership program with exclusive benefits such as priority booking, free mini-sessions like bff or cap and gown minis, or a yearly family portrait session included. This creates a sense of exclusivity and value, making clients feel special and appreciated. They’ll be more likely to stick with you and recommend your services to others.

TIP #3: Stay Connected Year-RoundMaintaining consistent communication with your clients throughout the year helps keep your business top of mind. Use email newsletters, social media updates, and personalized messages to stay connected. Share behind-the-scenes content, tips for preparing for their next session, and updates about your services. Engaging with clients regularly helps build a sense of community and strengthens the relationship beyond the summer season.

TIP #4: Create Long-Term Photography PlansEncourage your clients to think beyond a single session by offering long-term photography plans. For example, offer packages that include multiple sessions throughout the year, such as seasonal shoots or milestone moments. Highlight the benefits of capturing their journey over time and how it creates a comprehensive story of their senior year.

Providing options for ongoing sessions fosters a sense of commitment and ensures they keep coming back for more.

And there you have it – “4 Strategies for Turning Summer Clients into Long-term Customers!”

Remember, building those long-term client relationships is the secret sauce for a thriving photography business that stands the test of time. By rolling out the red carpet with exceptional experiences and irresistible loyalty perks, you’ll turn those summer sessions into the first chapter of a beautiful, lasting partnership. Thanks so much for listening!

What To Do When Your Clients Won’t Respect Your BoundariesWhat do you do when your clients don’t respect your boundaries? This is a topic that many high school senior photographers face. It’s crucial to address these issues to maintain both your sanity and the professionalism of your business. From handling late-night texts to dealing with requests that go beyond the agreed-upon terms, we’ll cover practical steps to help you navigate these challenges effectively. Now let’s dive in!

TIP #1: Be ClearIf you are a photographer, chances are you have encountered clients who ask for more. Or, they try to push you into doing something that is outside of your offerings and/or comfort zone. It is time to respect your boundaries anytime a situation arises that I don’t like or haven’t thought of. This usually means make changes to my policies, offerings etc.

Lately, I’ve encountered some boundary-pushing behaviors from clients that I think are worth discussing. Specifically, I’ve received late-night texts and requests that go beyond what was initially agreed upon. It’s important to address these issues head-on, both for our sanity and for the professionalism of our businesses.

First, let’s get clear with ourselves! Being in business is always a learning opportunity! We can’t possibly predict all the situations that could arise. You have to be willing to learn as you go—and more importantly, make changes as you go. Get clear with yourself on what you are willing to do and what you specifically offer! If you aren’t clear with yourself, then you can’t be clear with your clients. And if they aren’t clear, they won’t know that they can’t ask for or push you to do something else.

Part of handling boundary issues is looking at ourselves. Ask if we’ve truly determined what we offer, what our business hours are, what our policies are, and if we have communicated our boundaries to our clients clearly.

Have we set the right expectations from the start?

Sometimes, a lack of clarity on our part can lead to misunderstandings. It’s essential to be explicit about what you are and are not willing to do.

TIP #2: Set Up Automated ResponsesFor example, I’ve started setting up automated notifications. They state my business hours and inform clients that any messages received outside of these hours will be answered during the next business day. This small step can make a big difference. I had two incidents just this week where parents of teenagers texted me at 10 PM and 11 PM. In both cases, I responded with an automated reply saying, “My business hours are ____. Your message will be answered during the next business day.”

Consider turning on Do Not Disturb mode or setting up automated responses to teach clients about your availability. By responding with an automated response instead of an actual response, you are teaching your clients that it is not ok to text me late at night. Or if you do, you won’t get a response until the next business day. If you respond to these late night texts, you will teach them to continue to disrespect your time and text at all hours. That is not what you want. I get that sometimes we text because whatever it is we need to say is on our minds. You can still teach them to respect your boundaries – even if they do text after hours. Don’t respond until it is during business hours.

TIP #3: Know the Difference Between Exceeding Expectations and Being Taken Advantage OfHere is another important aspect to respect your boundaries. Distinguish between exceeding expectations and being taken advantage of. We often feel pressured to go above and beyond to get good reviews or to make clients happy. But there’s a fine line between offering excellent service and letting clients push your boundaries.

We have to be kind and professional always. It is ok to let a client know your boundaries in a kind and professional way—without feeling like you are being mean. When I feel like I am being taken of advantage of, I first always try to take a breath before responding. To be honest, any time that I have responded right away, I probably don’t come off as professional as I should. So I have learned that taking a breath or a minute to really consider my response is the key to making sure it is a professional response. That helps me avoid a response out of frustration or personal feelings.

Here Is A Personal Example of How I Set BoundariesOne recent time a client took advantage of me involved three separate senior photoshoots with three friends back in the fall. I felt super grateful that all three booked their sessions with me and purchased either the top or next-to-top collection. Since they would have a grad party together and didn’t have their caps and gowns during their individual sessions, I offered a group mini session in the spring to capture their cap and gown photos.

When spring rolled around, the moms kept trying to add outfits and other types of photos. I realized I had not clearly communicated the details of my mini session gift. They were trying to get more out of my kindness.

Here is what I offered: 15 minutes with just their cap and gown, a few photos of each individual, and a few group photos. They wanted cap and gown photos, college tee shirt photos, white dress photos, mom and daughter photos, all individual and groups—far more than a mini session included.

That’s when I calmly and professionally explained what a mini session actually included and informed them that if they wanted everything they were asking for, they would need to book a full session. They did not book a full session and ended up taking away all the extra outfits.

The lesson I took away is that clients don’t know what they don’t know. They think it’s no big deal to just click the shutter a few more times. That’s why we must be very clear about what we offer and what is included so they don’t try to get more for less.

TIP #4: Stand Firm on Service Scope To Respect Your BoundariesWhen it comes to what you offer, be clear with yourself first. Normally we think of a session fee or an all inclusive fee and what that includes. But we also need to put ourselves in the shoes of potential clients and what they may ask for. Sometimes this comes from learning from an actual client who asks for more. But we have to think ahead and determine what we will offer if a client asks for x. Once we are clear ourselves, we can be clear with clients and stand firm on our services.

If you are a senior photographer, some additional requests may be sibling photos, family photos, cap and gown sessions. These are after the initial senior session is done or even a spring session if they did their first session in the fall. Think ahead for these situations and determine how you will handle them. That way when a client asks, you have an answer.

Family photos are a common one for me. And the truth is, I don’t mind taking a few at the end of the session. That only increases the amount of money they will spend at the ordering session because they are not going to not buy some family photos as well as senior photos. But if the client is trying to get a full family session for the price of a senior session, that is too much. So I am very clear with my parameters on what is included and what is not!

Here’s another personal example.I recently had a parent who booked the cheapest session with the least amount of time and recently asked if I could also take family photos. I explained to her that the amount of time for this particular session did not include time for additional family photos. I gave her three clear options:

1- Bump up to the next session option which gave us more time and I would make the last ten minutes family time.

2 – Stick with the session she booked but add on a family mini for additional money.

3- Book a full family session at a later date.

I gave her clear options, what is included in each, and what the cost would be. That set expectations, not be taken advantage of while still delivering professional service and standing firm with my services and what is available.

Make sure you are clear on these options for add ons, additional services, what is included and what is not in your own business so you can be clear when asked for something extra.

TIP #5: Manage Outfit ExpectationsWhen it comes to senior sessions, a lot of times the number of outfits are included in the price. The reason for this is that it takes time to change outfits. The more outfits, the more time. And frankly the more photos too because you have more outfits to capture. So you have to be clear on the number of outfits included in your price so clients are clear on what they are getting.

But we’ve all probably had that client who ignored what was included and booked the session that included 2 outfits but showed up with four! Has this happened to you??

Knowing how to handle this before it happens will help you stay professional and not be taken advantage of. Maybe you don’t care if they show up with more and that is fine! If that is the case then you already know how to handle it. But if you want it to be a strict policy, then knowing how to handle it if they show up with more is important so you aren’t caught off guard. My advice is to politely but firmly ask, “Which two outfits would you like to use for your shoot today?” Or “Which two are your favorites so we can make sure that those are the ones we use for your shoot?”

If on the shoot you realize that there is time to sneak in another of their outfits because maybe you haven’t used up all your shoot time, then great. By letting them know right off the bat that two is what they paid for, you are setting expectations and sticking to the session option they booked. It’s about setting clear, consistent boundaries and sticking to them.

TIP #6: Educate Clients on Photo OptionsAnother common issue is clients who say they just need one photo. While they may believe this, a professional photo session involves providing them with a variety of options. It’s about educating clients on the value of what you offer. Explain that even if they think they only need one photo, having multiple options ensures they get the best possible result. And that you will need to take more than one to get them the “one” they think they need.

You also still have to use the same equipment for one versus 50. You still have to drive to and from the location to actually take the one photo using gas, time, etc. There is more involved in the process than simply taking just one photo or clicking that shutter just one time.

I actually often wonder what a client that asks for just one photo would do if I showed up and literally just clicked the shutter one time! Ha! I would never do that but I would love to see the reaction to doing exactly what they asked for!

Communicate Clearly So Clients Respect Your BoundariesTo wrap up, putting policies in place to clearly communicate what you are and are not willing to do is crucial. Be clear on your own policies and what you offer. This allows you to clearly communicate these to your clients. Make sure that you have everything spelled out in several places. This includes your inquiry magazine, listed on your website, in your FAQ’s, on your contract, and more! And if you speak to your clients in person in a consultation. verbally communicate these things as well. These need to be reinforced so that clients know how to respect your boundaries.

Don’t feel bad about restating your boundaries. Clients need to understand your business hours and the scope of your services. Remember, it’s not about being difficult; it’s about maintaining professionalism and ensuring that you can deliver the best service possible without burning out. Remember, setting and maintaining boundaries is crucial for your sanity and the professionalism of your business. Stay firm, stay clear, and keep delivering exceptional service to your clients.

Senior Mini-Sessions: Do They Really Work?Today, I’m sharing a hot topic: Senior Mini-Sessions. Do they really work?

Well, the answer isn’t a simple yes or no. It depends on how you approach them and what you offer alongside your full senior sessions.

Let’s explore how you can make Senior Mini-Sessions work for you!

Tip #1: Avoid These Common Pitfalls When You Offer Senior Mini-SessionsMany photographers offer mini-sessions as a way to attract clients and increase bookings. However, there’s a growing debate about whether these mini-sessions truly deliver the desired results.

A common concern arises when mini-sessions are offered with full senior sessions. The lines between the two packages might blur for clients. While mini-sessions can be appealing for clients seeking quick and budget-friendly options, offering them alongside full sessions poses certain risks.

Here are some potential pitfalls to consider:* + Too Many Services At Once: This occurs when offering multiple similar services leads to competition between those services within your business.
For example, clients may opt for the cheaper mini-sessions instead of booking the more comprehensive full sessions if you offer both with similar themes or locations.
If the cheaper option cannibalizes the sales or bookings of the higher-priced option, it can reduce your overall revenue. * + Overlapping Offerings: This refers to situations where the content, benefits, or experiences provided in one service are very similar to those in another service you offer. When there’s significant overlap between services, clients may struggle to differentiate between them. This leads to confusion and indecision, and they don’t buy.
It also impact your ability to upsell or cross-sell services effectively. Clients may choose one service over another arbitrarily. * + Dilution of Brand Value: Brand value encompasses the perceived quality, uniqueness, and overall appeal of your brand and services in the eyes of your target audience. When you offer too many similar or overlapping services, it can dilute the distinctive qualities that make your brand stand out. Clients may perceive your brand as less specialized or premium if they see numerous similar offerings. This leads to a potential decline in brand loyalty, pricing power, and overall market positioning.

In the context of senior photography, avoiding these pitfalls is crucial for maintaining a strong market position, attracting ideal clients, and maximizing revenue potential.

Strategically plan and differentiate your offerings. This will ensure each service contributes positively to your brand’s perceived value and overall business success.

Plan mini-sessions carefully to avoid these drawbacks…I’ve got some ideas for how you can do mini-sessions well!

Tip #2: Unique Stand Alone Mini-SessionsInstead of bundling mini-sessions with full sessions, consider offering unique standalone mini-session experiences.

For example, cap and gown sessions provide graduates with an opportunity to capture their milestone and achievements in a specialized setting.

    • They provide graduates with a dedicated space and time to showcase their academic achievements and celebrate this significant moment in their lives.
    • Cap and gown sessions often involve iconic elements such as graduation attire, academic regalia, and props related to the graduate’s field of study or future plans.
    • By offering cap and gown sessions as standalone mini-sessions, photographers can tailor the experience to highlight the pride and excitement of graduation day. It creates meaningful and personalized images for their clients.

Family mini-sessions for seniors allow them to include their loved ones in memorable photoshoots. * + Including family members in senior photoshoots adds a layer of emotional depth and connection to the images. + Family mini-sessions for seniors allow graduates to share this important milestone with their loved ones, capturing moments of joy, pride, and togetherness. + These sessions can focus on family portraits, candid interactions, and group dynamics. The goal is to reflect the support and encouragement the graduate receives from their family. + By offering standalone family mini-sessions, photographers can create cherished memories for both the graduate and their family members, fostering a sense of unity and celebration.

Friend mini-sessions offer a fun and dynamic group experience for graduating friends.

    • Friend mini-sessions provide an opportunity for graduating friends to come together and celebrate their accomplishments as a group.
    • These sessions often feature playful and candid moments, shared laughter. It is beautiful to capture the unique bond between friends who have journeyed through high school together.
    • Friend mini-sessions can include group poses, individual portraits, and creative group activities. Showcase the friendship and camaraderie among the graduates.
    • By offering standalone friend mini-sessions, photographers can capture the spirit of friendship and create nostalgic keepsakes that reflect their shared memories.

Tip 3: The Competitive Edge of Unique Mini-SessionsStandout mini-session ideas can give your photography business a competitive edge. By offering experiences that are tailored, memorable, and distinct, you position yourself as a photographer who goes beyond standard offerings. This differentiation not only attracts clients but also fosters loyalty and word-of-mouth referrals.

Unique mini-sessions offer tailored experiences that resonate with clients’ interests and preferences. These sessions create memorable moments through creative concepts, props, and storytelling elements. They contribute to building a distinct brand identity known for creativity and innovation. They also foster loyalty among clients who appreciate the personalized and memorable experiences. Clients are more likely to return for future sessions and refer others after a positive mini-session experience.

The competitive edge of unique mini-sessions extends to brand advocacy and word-of-mouth referrals. They position your photography business as a leader in offering specialized and standout services. The differentiation from standard offerings helps command premium pricing for your sessions.

Overall, unique mini-sessions contribute significantly to the success and growth of your photography business!

Make Senior Mini-Sessions Work For YouAnd there you have it – “Senior Mini-Sessions: Do They Really Work?”!

My Secret Recipe for a Viral ReelToday, I’m sharing how to create engaging and share-worthy reels that gets everyone talking. I’m breaking down the six steps in my secret recipe for a viral reel. Now, let’s jump in!

Step #1: Grab Attention with a Strong HookFirst things first, your reel needs to grab attention right from the start. The first few seconds of your reel or any social media content are crucial for capturing your audience’s attention. People scroll quickly, so you need to make an instant impact to stop the scroll.

Use a catchy title and captivating visuals in the first few seconds to hook your audience. You can use a stunning senior portrait showcasing your unique style or a behind-the-scenes sneak peek. The goal is to make sure the visuals are eye-catching and intriguing.

Step #2: Keep it Short and SweetOnce you’ve captured your audience’s attention, remember that it is limited. Shorter content tends to perform better on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Concise content is more likely to be watched until the end, increasing engagement and reach.

Keep your reel concise and to the point. Aim for 15-30 seconds max to deliver your message or showcase your work effectively. Remember, less is often more in the world of viral content. For example, you can show off your best work or share a quick tip that leaves viewers wanting more.

Step #3: Show Off Your Creativity and UniquenessNow, let’s talk about incorporating creativity and uniqueness into your senior portraits. In a sea of content, standing out requires creativity and a unique perspective.

To begin, showcase what makes your senior portraits special and why clients should choose you over others. Think outside the box. Experiment with different angles, lighting techniques, and editing styles to make your photos stand out.

Also experiment with different shooting locations, creative poses, or innovative editing techniques. Share before-and-after shots to highlight your editing skills and the transformation you bring to senior portraits. Showcase your signature style and personality in every shot.

Step #4: Create Engaging Content Beyond ReelsWhile reels are fantastic for engagement, don’t forget about other viral-worthy content. Carousels, graphics, and stories are powerful, too! Use these formats to share tips, client testimonials, before-and-after transformations, and behind-the-scenes stories. Variety keeps your audience engaged. Mixing up your content with carousels, graphics, and stories adds depth to your social media presence and caters to different viewer preferences.

Here are some examples:

  • Create a carousel post featuring a series of senior portraits with captions that tell a story or share valuable tips.
  • Design graphics that showcase your pricing packages or highlight client testimonials.
  • Use Instagram Stories to give a sneak peek into your photo shoots or share behind-the-scenes moments.

Mix it up to keep your audience engaged and coming back for more.

Step 5: Craft Strong Titles and CaptionsTitles and captions serve as your chance to hook viewers, convey your message, and encourage engagement. Compelling titles and captions can make your content more shareable and memorable. Use attention-grabbing headlines that pique curiosity and encourage viewers to watch or read more.

Craft captions that share personal stories, client experiences, or photography tips to add value and build connections with your audience. Keep captions concise, relevant, and engaging – ask questions, share stories, and add personality to your brand voice.

Step 6: Harness the Power of Hashtags and TaggingLastly, hashtags and tagging are essential for increasing visibility. That means reaching a broader audience, and connecting with fellow photographers, clients, and industry influencers. By properly using hashtags and tagging relevant accounts can amplify your reach and engagement. Research trending hashtags in the senior photography niche and use them strategically.

Tag clients, collaborators, and relevant accounts to expand your reach and foster engagement. For instance, tag a clothing boutique if you’re showcasing styled senior sessions with their outfits. These are simple and quick ways to increase your visibility.

How Will You Use My Secret Recipe For A Viral Reel? And there you have it – “my secret recipe for a viral reel”! Don’t be discouraged if your first few attempts don’t immediately go viral. Keep experimenting, analyzing what works, and refining your content strategy. Get creative, stay authentic, and watch your content engagement soar!

What Direction to Take Your Photography Business After GraduationToday, we’re exploring an important topic for photographers – what direction to take your photography business after graduation season. The current class has graduated. Now it’s time to switch gears and focus on the newest class coming up this fall. But how do you reach them best? Let’s find out!

Tip #1: Create a VIP WaitlistAs a senior photographer, one of the smartest moves you can make after graduation season is to create a VIP list or waitlist. This allows interested clients to be the first ones notified when your new calendar opens for bookings.

By offering this exclusivity, you create a sense of anticipation. This urgency encourages potential clients to secure their spots early. Creating a VIP waitlist is like rolling out the red carpet for your clients. It ensures they get front-row access to your photography services!

Here’s how this strategy can benefit you as a senior photographer:Firstly, by inviting clients to join your VIP waitlist, you’re signaling that they are valued and important to your business. This personalized approach fosters a sense of exclusivity and makes clients feel special. This enhances their overall experience even before the photoshoot begins.

The VIP waitlist also serves as a powerful marketing tool. It builds anticipation and excitement among potential clients. They will eagerly await the opening of your new calendar for bookings! This anticipation can lead to a surge in early bookings, ensuring your schedule fills up quickly and efficiently.

It also creates a sense of urgency. Clients on the waitlist know that spots are limited and in high demand. That encourages them to act promptly when booking opens to secure their preferred dates and times. This sense of urgency can drive faster conversions. As another benefit, it also reduces the risk of last-minute cancellations or availability issues.

Additionally, having a VIP list allows you to prioritize loyal clients or those who have shown genuine interest in your services. You can offer special perks or incentives to VIP waitlist members. That could look like early bird discounts, exclusive session packages, or bonus add-ons, further motivating them to book with you.

Overall, the VIP waitlist strategy has multiple benefits:

  • Boosts your bookings and revenue
  • Strengthens client relationships
  • Fosters a sense of community
  • Sets a positive tone for future interactions with your photography business

It’s a win-win approach that benefits both you and your clients.

Tip #2: Build An Email Marketing Campaign with a Freebie OfferAnother effective way to reach the upcoming class is through an email marketing campaign with a freebie offer. Consider providing a valuable resource. This could be an e-book or guide titled “Everything You Need to Know for Your Senior Year Photoshoot” or a “Style Guide for Senior Photoshoots.”

Other ideas include: a downloadable “Location Scouting Checklist” that helps seniors and their families find the perfect photoshoot locations. Include criteria such as natural lighting conditions, scenic backdrops, accessibility, and permit requirements for various outdoor locations.

Develop a guide or video series that offers posing tips and tricks for seniors to look their best in front of the camera. Include examples of flattering poses and guidance on body language. Give tips for capturing authentic and candid moments during the photoshoot.

Create a Print Product Showcase. Show them how these photos can be shared more than just digitally. Showcase the range of print products you offer. This could include custom photo albums, canvas prints, and framed portraits, in a digital catalog or brochure. Highlight the quality, customization options, and storytelling aspects of each product. Educate clients about the value of printed memories.

By offering these freebie resources, senior photographers can attract and engage potential clients, demonstrate their expertise, and provide valuable guidance to enhance the overall senior photography experience. This freebie not only adds value for your audience but also showcases your expertise and positions you as a trusted advisor in senior photography. In the email campaign, you can also tease upcoming sessions, promotions, and unique offerings to pique interest and drive engagement.

Tip 3: Speak Directly To The Upcoming Class on Social MediaSocial media is a powerful tool for connecting with the upcoming class of seniors. Start speaking directly to them by sharing content that resonates with their experiences and interests.

Some topic ideas to consider include:

  • Tips for preparing for senior year photoshoots, including outfit inspiration and location ideas.
  • Behind-the-scenes glimpses of your photography process, showcasing your style and personality.
  • Client testimonials and success stories from previous senior sessions to build trust and credibility.
  • Countdown posts or sneak peeks of upcoming promotions and limited-time offers to create excitement and anticipation.

By leveraging social media platforms effectively, you can build rapport with the upcoming class, establish your brand presence, and drive awareness and inquiries for your senior photography services.

One great idea is to offer cap and gown mini sessions. Think about it – some clients might have done their main shoots in the fall. Now they’re looking for a fresh set of photos in their graduation attire. It’s a win-win situation!

What to Do When Things Go Wrong As A PhotographerLet’s face it – no matter how seasoned you are behind the lens, photography mishaps are bound to happen. But fear not! Today, we’re diving into a topic that every photographer encounters at some point: What to Do When Things Go Wrong.

From unpredictable weather to challenging lighting situations, last-minute cancellations, and dealing with unhappy clients, we’ve all been there. In this episode, I’ll share some valuable tips and strategies to help you navigate these tricky situations like a pro.

Let’s get started!

Tip #1: Embrace the ElementsHow and When To Reschedule When Things Go WrongAlright, first up, let’s talk about what to do when things go wrong due to unexpected weather conditions. Always have a backup plan for outdoor shoots!

If there is rain in the forecast, how do you know when it’s time to reschedule or move forward?? For me, I always tell my clients that I will contact them the day of the photoshoot regarding the weather! I tell them not to stress. I will be watching the weather and will give them my best advice for either moving forward with the photo shoot or rescheduling.

My rule of thumb is: if it is a 50% chance of rain or more, it’s most likely going to be rescheduled. That way my clients get the best possible outcome for their photos.

I also look at the wind. I will reschedule if it is above 20 miles per hour. Because honestly, who wants to sit through hair and makeup only to get their hair blown all over the place in their photos?

I also tell them that extreme cloudiness may require us to reschedule. Now could I take photos in extreme cloudiness? Of course. Ultimately I want my clients to have the best experience possible. A dreary cloudy day is not something that makes for the best experience possible. It could be cool if that is a look you are going for. Or if you live in an area where it’s more common than not to have cloudy days, your rescheduling policy may differ from mine. Ultimately as photographers, we have to make sure we clearly communicate our suggestions for our clients and weather-related reschedules.

If the weather turns gnarly with lightning or crazy winds, reschedule that shoot for another day. I was once on a photoshoot with a senior client and it was beautiful and sunny and then out of nowhere, a huge storm showed up! We waited it out for a few minutes to see if it went away as quickly as it appeared. However, I had to call the photoshoot and reschedule the rest for another day!

It’s always a bummer to have to reschedule. However, if I have the flexibility to reschedule, I know that is what is best for my client.

What To Do When Rain Shows UpNow if a reschedule is not possible, you should have a backup plan for rain. For instance, look for places such as a parking garage, overhangs on buildings, indoor spots with beautiful natural light or you may have a studio that you can use if weather doesn’t permit you to take photos outside.

In all my years hosting workshops and retreats, I stress about the weather affecting our styled photoshoots. Of course, stressing about it doesn’t change it but having a backup plan is so important! I have had to think on the fly and find an indoor spot due to rain! We used a parking garage and the public transportation entrance because it was covered to avoid the rain and got some really cool shots!

If rain shows up uninvited, don’t stress! Embracing the elements creatively can turn challenges into opportunities for unique and memorable photos. If rain disrupts your outdoor shoot, integrate umbrellas, rain boots, or colorful raincoats as props. Have these props on hand so you are always prepared. These things not only add a playful and whimsical element to your images but also showcase your adaptability and creativity as a photographer.

Here are some photos from a recent shoot where it started raining in the mid-shoot!

Encourage your seniors to embrace the weather and have fun with the unexpected elements. This results in authentic and candid moments captured on camera. Turn that unexpected downpour into a photo op that’ll be fun and memorable!

Communicate clearly with your clients about the importance of safety precautions and the need for flexibility in scheduling to ensure a successful and enjoyable photo session for everyone involved. By embracing the elements with preparedness, creativity, and safety measures, you can navigate outdoor shoots smoothly and deliver stunning results regardless of the weather challenges.

Tip #2: Mastering Lighting ChallengesNext, take a good look at your lighting situation before you start clicking away. Sometimes clients ask us to photograph in a specific location that you may not always have time to scout beforehand. And even though the client may say, “It has great light!” that may not always be the case. Clients don’t know what we know when it comes to lighting and photography.

Take the time to look at lighting, especially in new locations. Note any potential challenges such as harsh shadows, uneven lighting, or overly bright spots that could affect the overall quality of your photographs. Adjust your shooting angle or position your subject strategically to mitigate these issues and create a more visually appealing composition.

Best Tools For Lighting ChallengesReflectors and diffusers are your BFFs when it comes to taming harsh light or jazzing up those indoor shots with a little extra glow. Reflectors can bounce natural light onto your subject, filling in shadows and creating a more balanced illumination. Similarly, diffusers can soften harsh sunlight or artificial light sources, resulting in a more flattering and even lighting setup. Experiment with different reflector sizes and colors to achieve the desired effect based on your shooting conditions and creative vision.

For indoor shoots or locations with limited natural light, invest in portable lighting equipment. Game changers are speed lights or continuous LED lights. These tools provide additional control over the lighting environment, allowing you to enhance or modify the existing light to suit your photographic style.

Use speed lights to add fill light or create dramatic effects. LED lights offer consistent and adjustable illumination for portrait sessions or studio setups.

By mastering lighting challenges through careful assessment, strategic positioning, and the use of supplemental tools, you can elevate the quality of your photographs even in challenging lighting conditions. Flexibility, experimentation, and a solid understanding of lighting principles will enable you to adapt and thrive in various shooting environments, ensuring stunning and impactful images for your senior photography clients.

TIP #3: Handling Last-Minute CancellationsNow, onto the dreaded last-minute cancellations. We’ve all been there, right? First things first, keep calm and communicate with empathy and understanding.

Understand where your client’s coming from and see if there’s any way to work things out.

Take the time to listen to their reasons for canceling, whether it’s due to unforeseen circumstances, personal emergencies, sickness or scheduling conflicts. Express empathy. Offer to reschedule the session if feasible, showing that you prioritize their needs and value their business.

Outline Your Cancellation Policy In Your ContractHaving a clear and comprehensive cancellation policy outlined in your contract is essential for managing such situations effectively. (Get started with templates from The Legal Paige!) Clearly state the terms and conditions regarding cancellations, rescheduling, and refunds or cancellation fees to avoid misunderstandings and ensure transparency for both parties. This not only protects your business but also sets clear expectations for your clients regarding the consequences of last-minute cancellations.

And hey, if you find yourself with some unexpected free time, use it wisely! Update your portfolio, amp up your marketing game, or slide into those DMs and connect with some potential clients.

Use that unexpected free time productively to benefit your business. Instead of dwelling on the cancellation, use the extra time to work on essential tasks that contribute to your professional growth. This could involve updating your website or portfolio with new work, refining your marketing strategies, networking with potential clients or collaborators, or even investing in self-improvement through online courses or workshops.

By turning setbacks into opportunities for productivity and development, you can transform a last-minute cancellation into a chance to enhance your business and build stronger client relationships.

TIP #4: Managing Unhappy ClientsLast but not least, let’s chat about what to do when things go wrong due to unhappy clients. We never want this to happen, but it inevitably will happen in your career.

Active listening is key here. Acknowledge your client’s concerns and feelings. Show empathy and understanding, even if you don’t necessarily agree with their perspective. And try really, really hard not to take it personally!! I know it is super hard but most of the time it is NOT personal.

Take responsibility for any slip-ups or misunderstandings and work together to find a solution that leaves everyone smiling. Whether it’s offering a complimentary reshoot, providing additional editing, or offering a partial refund, aim to find a resolution that satisfies your client.

How I Handled An Unhappy ClientI remember one particular client who was not happy with her photos. The key to making her happy was talking to her and really trying to pinpoint what it was that she didn’t like.

I had photographed both her older sisters on days that were sunnier than her photoshoot, so it was the lighting and the brightness she was missing in her photos. Her shoot day was extremely overcast. Even though we were in the same field, it takes on a very green cast when the sun is not shining. It’s a location that really needs that yellowness from the sun to cut through all the green and to make other colors pop. That was what she was missing. That was not necessarily my fault. Once I got to the bottom of what the real issue was, I could reshoot on a day that would give her the look she was going for.

Learn from the experience. Use feedback from unhappy clients as an opportunity to learn, level up, and improve your skills as a photographer. Take note of any areas where you can enhance your services to prevent similar issues in the future.

The Business Side of Senior PhotographyToday, we’re diving deeper into the business side of senior photography. Our focus is on pricing, contracts, and customer service. These elements form the backbone of a successful photography business. Mastering the business side can mean the difference between merely surviving and thriving in the world of senior photography.

Tip 1: Establish Your PricingLet’s talk about money! Establishing your pricing as a senior photographer involves several key considerations to ensure you are pricing your services effectively and competitively.

Begin by conducting thorough research on local market rates. This will help you understand the pricing landscape in your area. This research will help you determine a pricing structure that is both competitive and reflective of your skills and experience.

Offer different packages to suit various client needs and budgets. For instance, basic packages for essential services and premium packages with extra features for a more comprehensive experience.

When setting your prices, it’s crucial not to undervalue your work. Take into account your expertise, the time invested in each session, equipment costs, editing time, and other expenses to ensure your pricing covers all aspects of your business and allows for a sustainable income.

Clearly communicate your pricing structure to your clients from the start. This will manage client expectations and avoid misunderstandings. Provide detailed information about what each package includes, any add-on options available. Include any policies regarding payment terms, deposits, and cancellations.

How I Communicate Pricing To My ClientsI personally communicate pricing two ways to ensure that no one is surprised or confused! I don’t really want people booking me that are not fully aware of my pricing because that just doesn’t feel right to me. So I communicate my pricing via a phone call to the parent of the senior because they are the ones who are ultimately paying for it. Then I communicate it again in an email with a full magazine that gives them all the information they need in order to make the decision to hire me.

By establishing transparent and well-defined pricing, you can attract the right clients, build trust, and showcase the value of your services effectively.

Tip 2: Craft Solid ContractsNow, onto contracts – the unsung heroes of every successful shoot. You gotta have these!

Contracts help protect both you and your clients. They also ensure clear expectations and guidelines.

Start by developing comprehensive contracts that detail your services. Include the type and duration of sessions, deliverables, usage rights, and any additional services or products offered.

How To Create A Comprehensive ContractClearly outline your fees, payment schedules, and accepted payment methods, specifying any deposits or installment plans required. Include detailed cancellation and rescheduling policies to manage client expectations and address unforeseen circumstances.

Consult with a legal professional experienced in photography contracts. That way, your contracts are legally binding and comply with local laws and regulations. A great resource for contracts is The Legal Paige.

Require clients to sign contracts before beginning any work or sessions to formalize the agreement and minimize disputes. Regularly update your contracts to reflect changes in business policies, pricing, or services. Your contract needs to remain current and relevant.

I often find that my clients teach me when I need to update a contract! Sometimes that’s good and sometimes its due to something that wasn’t pleasant but I learned from it and added it to my contract. So don’t be afraid to make adjustments as things come up.

Providing clients with well-crafted and transparent contracts demonstrates professionalism, builds trust, and protects both parties’ interests throughout the client-photographer relationship.

Tip 3: Invest in Continuous Learning and GrowthNever stop learning and growing! Stay on top of industry trends, network like a boss, and soak up knowledge like a sponge.

Connect with fellow photographers, seek out mentors, and never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone – that’s where the magic happens!

Investing in continuous learning and growth is essential for staying competitive and evolving in the dynamic field of senior photography.

Start by staying updated on the latest industry trends, techniques, and technology advancements. Attend workshops, seminars, and online courses offered by reputable organizations or experienced professionals to expand your knowledge and skills. For example, consider enrolling in a course on advanced lighting techniques for portrait photography or attending a seminar on marketing strategies for photographers.

Ways You Can Continue To Grow As A PhotographerNetworking with other photographers and industry professionals is invaluable. Join photography groups or forums both online and offline to connect with peers, share experiences, and exchange insights. Collaborate on projects, attend meetups or conferences, and participate in community events to broaden your network and stay inspired by others’ work.

Seeking feedback from mentors, peers, or even clients can provide valuable perspectives on your strengths and areas for improvement. Consider joining a mentorship program or seeking guidance from experienced photographers. We can offer constructive criticism and advice tailored to your specific goals and challenges. Use feedback as a tool for self-assessment and continuous improvement.

Finally, take time to reflect on your successes and challenges regularly. Analyze what strategies have worked well for your business and what areas may need refinement or adjustment. Use past experiences, both positive and negative, as learning opportunities to evolve your business strategies, improve client experiences, and enhance your overall photography skills.

By investing in continuous learning and growth, you’ll stay ahead of the curve and position yourself as a knowledgeable and skilled professional in the senior photography industry.

Tip 4: Market Your Business EffectivelyGet your online presence shining with a killer website and social media.

Begin by creating a professional website that showcases your portfolio, services, pricing, and contact information. Your website should be visually appealing, mobile-friendly, and optimized for search engines to improve visibility.

Active engagement on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest is crucial for building brand awareness and attracting potential clients. Share high-quality images from your photo sessions, behind-the-scenes content, client testimonials, and informative posts related to senior photography. Engage with your followers by responding to comments, hosting Q&A sessions, and participating in relevant hashtags and challenges.

Ways You Can Uplevel Your Online PresenceMaintaining a regularly updated blog or posting consistent content on social media helps demonstrate your expertise, creativity, and passion for senior photography. Share tips, client stories, industry news, and inspirational content to keep your audience engaged and informed.

Email marketing campaigns are effective for staying in touch with past clients, sharing updates, promotions, and special offers, and nurturing leads. Segment your email list based on client preferences and interests to deliver personalized content that resonates with each segment.

Show off your stunning work, share those behind-the-scenes gems, and let your personality shine through – people wanna know the face behind the lens!

And hey, team up with local businesses or influencers to expand your reach and reel in those dream clients.

Collaborating with local businesses, influencers, or organizations can also expand your reach and attract potential clients. Partnering with a makeup artist, hairstylist, clothing boutique, or event planner for styled photo shoots or joint promotions can introduce your services to new audiences and build valuable connections within your community.

By implementing these marketing strategies consistently and creatively, you can effectively promote your senior photography business, attract new clients, and build a strong reputation in the industry.

Tip 5: Prioritize Customer ServiceNext up, let’s talk about wowing your clients with top-notch service! It’s all about going above and beyond to make them feel like royalty.

Be responsive, be attentive, and show ’em some serious empathy – it goes a long way, trust me!

Don’t forget to communicate throughout the entire process – from booking to delivery, keep ’em in the loop every step of the way.

Prioritizing customer service is key to building a strong reputation and fostering long-term client relationships in the senior photography industry.

Start by ensuring that you are highly responsive and attentive to your clients’ inquiries and communications. This includes promptly replying to emails, messages, and phone calls, and being available to address any questions or concerns they may have.

Clearly outline your services, packages, pricing, and policies during the booking process to set realistic expectations. Maintain open and transparent communication throughout the entire photography process. That means keeping clients informed about scheduling, logistics, and any updates or changes.

How To Go Above And Beyond For Your ClientsTo go above and beyond, consider personalizing your services to meet individual client needs and preferences. For example, you could offer customized session packages or provide complimentary extras such as a pre-session consultation, wardrobe styling tips, or location scouting assistance. During the actual photo session, create a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere for your clients by being friendly, encouraging, and patient.

After delivering the final images, follow up with clients to ensure their satisfaction and address any feedback or suggestions they may have. Encourage them to leave reviews or testimonials to showcase your excellent customer service to potential clients.

Use client feedback to improve your services continuously. This includes refining your photography techniques, updating packages, or enhancing the overall client experience – all of which contribute to your growth.

By prioritizing exceptional customer service, you not only meet but exceed client expectations, leading to positive word-of-mouth referrals and repeat business.

Handle The Business Side of Senior Photography with Pricing, Contracts, and Customer ServiceAnd there you have it – “The Business Side of Senior Photography: Pricing, Contracts, and Customer Service.” Remember, success in this industry requires not only talent behind the lens but also effective business management skills.

The Recipe for The Perfect Reel No matter whether you have a love or hate relationship with the newest trend in social media, reels seem to be here to stay! Catch yourself always complaining that the algorithm hates you and no one is seeing your stuff? It could be because you aren’t using what the Instagram algorithm is telling you to utilize – which is reels.

Reels are the fastest way to increase your views, engagement and following on the gram. It’s because reels are actually shown to people outside of your followers. That means more potential eyes on your content!

Reels don’t have to be complicated. They can be a short 3-4 second video that showcases you, your business or your senior clients. That’s right, we’re talking about B-roll, the trend that’s taking the senior photography world by storm.

I recently had a b-roll type reel get over 809,000 views! What? It is literally just a behind the scenes 7 second video of me taking my son’s photos. I added text to the b-roll that says 3 things to do with your senior before graduation then wrote a longer caption that talks specifically to parents about what they should do with their senior before graduation! That’s it! Easy Peasy!

B-roll is a game-changer. It elevates storytelling by capturing the nuances, candid moments, and behind-the-scenes action that breathe life into your photos.

So, how can you effectively weave B-roll into your senior photography reel? Get ready to dive in and learn more. Let’s get started!

Tip 1: Elevate Visual StorytellingB-roll is often misunderstood filler footage, but in reality, it’s a powerful storytelling tool. By incorporating B-roll into your senior sessions, you can add layers of depth and emotion, creating a more immersive experience for your viewers.

Imagine you’re photographing a senior exploring a meadow in a warm glow of light. Instead of solely focusing on static portraits, integrate B-roll sequences that showcase the journey. Start with wide shots of the senior walking through the field. Then, transition to close-ups of wildflowers, the sunlight filtering through leaves, or the senior’s hands brushing against the grass. These moments of intimacy and detail elevate the visual storytelling, drawing viewers into the scene and evoking a sense of serenity and wonder.

B-roll also excels at setting the scene and establishing the mood. Let’s say you’re photographing a senior in an urban environment. Use B-roll to capture the hustle and bustle of the city – bustling streets, flickering neon lights, and snippets of conversations. These atmospheric shots transport viewers into the heart of the city, immersing them in the senior’s urban adventure.

B-roll can show potential clients what it is like to work with you. With visual storytelling you can create the desire to want to be a part of the story you are telling through video!

Tip 2: Add Dynamic MovementOne of the key benefits of B-roll is its ability to add dynamic movement to your senior sessions.

Experiment with different camera angles, perspectives, and movements to create visually captivating sequences that grab attention and hold it.

Try this: focus on interactions. For example, during a senior session with friends, capture candid moments of laughter, shared glances, or inside jokes. These snippets of genuine camaraderie add authenticity, making viewers feel like they’re part of the friendship circle.

For example, if you’re photographing senior models on a road trip styled photoshoot or maybe you are taking your model team on a road trip, intersperse B-roll footage of them singing along to their favorite songs, sharing snacks, or admiring the scenery from the car window. These dynamic and relatable moments showcase the bond between friends and the narrative arc within your photography.

By adding different angles and movement to your videos you can add excitement and energy to your reels.

Tip 3: Capture Authentic MomentsB-roll allows you to capture authentic moments that can’t be posed or staged.

Whether it’s a spontaneous laugh, a heartfelt glance, or a quiet moment of reflection, B-roll helps you capture the genuine emotions and personalities of your seniors.

These candid moments not only result in beautiful photographs but also create lasting memories for your clients. When they look back at these images, they’ll remember not just the poses but the emotions, connections, and experiences captured in those authentic B-roll moments. This emotional resonance adds depth and meaning to your work, creating a powerful storytelling narrative that your clients will cherish for years to come.

If shooting more B-roll is on your to-do list after this episode, I have the perfect resource for you! Check out my 25 B-roll shot list freebie by clicking here for 25 easy B-roll shots you can capture!

Tip 4: Showcase Attention to DetailB-roll is the perfect opportunity to showcase your attention to detail and highlight the unique and personalized elements of each senior session that make each senior session truly special.

Imagine capturing the intricate lace patterns of a senior’s dress, the vibrant hues of a carefully curated bouquet, or the texture and character of a rustic backdrop in exquisite detail.

For instance, during a senior session in a picturesque garden setting, you could use B-roll to focus on the delicate floral patterns of the senior’s dress, capturing the way the sunlight dances on the fabric and highlighting the intricate design. You might also zoom in on the vibrant colors and textures of the bouquet they hold, showcasing the individual blooms and their arrangement. Additionally, you could capture close-up shots of the rustic wooden benches or archways in the garden, emphasizing the natural textures and charm of the setting.

These small but significant details not only add visual interest to your photography but also play a crucial role in telling a more complete story of the senior session. When your clients look back at these images, they’ll not only see themselves but also remember the thoughtfully chosen details that contributed to the overall ambiance and mood of the session. This attention to detail elevates your photography and helps create a unique and memorable experience for your clients.

Tip 5: Enhance Your BrandFinally, B-roll can help enhance your brand and set you apart from the competition.

By incorporating B-roll into your senior sessions, you demonstrate your commitment to creativity, quality, and storytelling.

Consistent use of B-roll sets your brand apart, emphasizing innovation and commitment to delivering exceptional visual narratives, ultimately solidifying your position in the competitive photography market.

These authentic and engaging clips will attract clients and increase visibility. Additionally, they also establish you as a leading authority in senior photography!

The Reason B-roll Works So Well In ReelsThe reason B-roll works so well to create the perfect recipe for a reel is because if you pair it with a longer, value-packed caption, your viewers will read the caption while your b-roll reel plays in the background.

Why is this important? Because we want it looping while someone is reading your caption so that the algorithm sees that viewers are consuming your content. The looping shows Instagram people care enough to watch it or in reality have it loop while reading your content!! The more time people spend on your content the more Instagram rewards you and shows your content to more people!

But the key here is value! Value packed information that your ideal client wants or needs to know! Not just this session was so fun! Nope this means you are going to have to write more than that! Ha! And before you say you aren’t a writer…anyone can write a caption! Write it as if you are talking face to face with your ideal client. What do they want to know or need to know when it comes to senior photos? If they asked you a question about senior photos face to face, how would you answer? That is how you write the caption! I promise it doesn’t have to be hard.

At the end of the day, stop overthinking it and stop making excuses and just start creating content! The more you post, the easier it gets! The more you post, the more Instagram will reward you and the more you post, the more you will increase your chances of being seen by the right person who will start to follow you, get to know you, like you and trust you enough to book a senior photoshoot with you!!

And let’s face it…that’s the ultimate goal!!

The Recipe For The Perfect Reel Includes Trendy B-Roll!And there you have it – “The Recipe for The Perfect Reel” with a closer look at why B-roll is super trendy and how you can leverage it to enhance your senior photography.

I’ve got some homework for you today!! Look at your camera roll and find a 5-7 second behind the scenes video of you doing something such as photographing a senior.

Why You Should Incorporate Storyboarding into Your Photography SessionsToday, we’re uncovering the storyboarding secret every photographer needs. Storyboarding in photography is a must! It’s about enhancing client satisfaction, fostering creativity, and optimizing efficiency.

So what is storyboarding?

It’s creating a visual representation of the look and feel of a photoshoot. It’s like an inspiration board and a visual breakdown of the photoshoot:

  • the shots you want to get
  • the specific poses you want to do
  • the wardrobe
  • the overall aesthetic you want to capture.

It’s like a blueprint of the photoshoot. Have you ever created one? For me, storyboarding allows me to have a plan or a guide. Sometimes I venture off the plan a little but having one to help me accomplish the look and feel of a photoshoot is key. Let’s go through some tips to help you storyboard for your next photoshoot.

Tip #1: Enhance Client ExperienceExplore the process of storyboarding and conceptualizing senior portrait sessions, including how to plan themes, props, and creative concepts to make each session unique. Storyboarding isn’t just about planning out poses and locations; it’s about creating a narrative for each senior portrait session that resonates with your clients.

By taking the time to explore the process of storyboarding and conceptualizing sessions, you’re not only ensuring that each session is unique but also ensuring that your clients feel truly valued and involved in the process. From planning themes to selecting props and brainstorming creative concepts, storyboarding allows you to craft a session that reflects your client’s personality and vision. By discussing the storyline and vision with your clients beforehand, you’re not only setting expectations but also building trust and rapport, making for a smoother and more enjoyable experience overall.

It’s also a great way to take your senior portrait experience to the next level. First, work with you client to find out their vision for the shoot. Then, create a storyboard that represents that vision. When you give it to the client, they will feel like you truly get them. Your photos will capture them exactly how they want to be captured for their senior photos!

Tip #2: Boost CreativityLet’s talk about how storyboarding can ignite your creativity and take your photography to the next level. Storyboarding isn’t just a planning tool; it’s a creative process that encourages you to think outside the box and explore new concepts and themes. It serves as a roadmap for your creativity, guiding you through different scenes, poses, and props to capture the perfect shots.

If you listened to last week’s episode where I gave five tips on avoiding burnout, one of my tips was to do photoshoots just for you. These photoshoots allow you to embrace your creativity and reignite your passion for photography. For these photoshoots that are just for you, the sky is the limit with what you can do. By creating a storyboard for your vision, you can truly accomplish what you want.

For example, I just did a country themed photoshoot with one of my senior models. I created a storyboard for the photoshoot. It allowed me to truly get the most out of this photoshoot because I had a blueprint for exactly the look and feel of what I had in my head. By incorporating storytelling elements into your sessions, you’re not just taking photos; you’re crafting visual stories that evoke emotion and captivate your audience. From capturing candid moments to orchestrating elaborate setups, storyboarding allows you to push the boundaries of your creativity and create images that stand out from the crowd.

Tip #3: Streamline WorkflowLet’s explore how storyboarding can help streamline your workflow and make your photography sessions more efficient and stress-free. Planning ahead with storyboarding allows you to have a clear plan in place, ensuring that you’re prepared for every aspect of the session.

From scouting locations to coordinating outfits and props, storyboarding helps you anticipate potential challenges and plan accordingly. This saves you time and reduces stress on the day of the shoot. With a well-thought-out storyboard, you can focus on capturing moments rather than worrying about what to do next. This results in more natural and authentic images.

Additionally, storyboarding allows you to communicate your vision more effectively with your team or assistants. Everyone is on the same page and working towards a common goal. By streamlining your workflow with storyboarding, you can create a more enjoyable experience for both yourself and your clients. This ultimately leading to better results.

How To Create Storyboarding in PhotographyNow that you have heard why creating a storyboard is great, let’s talk about how to create one.

Step 1 – Determine the vision for your photoshootIf this is a senior session with a client, ask them their vision first. I do this in both the senior questionnaire as well as during the in-person consultation. It is important to listen to their vision, ask questions to clarify and then create a storyboard based on what they say.

For model team photoshoots, it is also a great idea to ask your models for their input! I know a model team is used to help you market your business so some photographers feel like it should be all about what they want the shoots to be and I get that, but you also have to remember the models and creating a good experience for them so they organically market your business. Part of making it great experience is to truly value their opinion and include them in the discussion especially when it comes to the vision for photoshoots. My models always have great ideas that I didn’t even think of so it opens my eyes to what teens really want. So create a storyboard for a model team photoshoot based on ideas from your model.

And if it is a creative shoot just for you, then ask yourself what is my vision for this photoshoot? What do i want to accomplish with this photoshoot? And create a storyboard around that.

Step 2 – Look for inspirationI use Pinterest, fashion magazines, ads, movies, tv shows and more! Finding images that speak to your vision will help you start to create the storyboard. Remember to use these images for inspiration not to copy. You want to include photos that included pose inspiration, mood inspiration, color palette, props, locations and even music to help you fully visualize the photoshoot.

Step 3 – Create the storyboardI use a mixture of photos as well as lists to completely plan out the vision for my shoots. This helps me and the subject fully understand the photoshoot goal. My favorite tools for creating my storyboard are Pinterest and Photoshop plus I have a shoot planning form I use as well. I give both clients and models this storyboard so everyone is on the same page as well as take it with me to a photoshoot to refer to and make sure I am getting all I wanted out of the photoshoot!

Why You Should Incorporate Storyboarding in Photography SessionsBy enhancing the client experience, boosting creativity, and streamlining your workflow, storyboarding can elevate your photography sessions to new heights.

Now, it’s time to take action. Reflect on how you currently approach your photography sessions – are there areas where storyboarding could enhance your process and outcomes?

Take the initiative to integrate this powerful tool into your workflow and watch as it transforms your sessions and client satisfaction.

Today, we’ll discuss how to grow your photography services while preserving your unique niche!

In this post, we’ll reveal how collaborating with niche-adjacent businesses can help you reach new clients and create mutually beneficial partnerships. We’ll also show you how to leverage social media to showcase your niche photography services and attract more clients.

Let’s dive in and discover how to elevate your business with these actionable strategies!

3 Ways to Grow your Photography Services While Still Staying in your NicheTip #1: Expand Your Service OfferingsDiversifying your services beyond your primary niche while still staying true to high school seniors can open up exciting opportunities for growth while maintaining your unique photography style.

One of the ways to expand your services is to offer family sessions for your high school senior clients. Senior year is the perfect time for families to get an updated family photoshoot because it may be the last time they are all together under one roof. As a parent of a senior myself, I know how important it is to capture memories of the entire family before the family dynamic changes a bit!

If you specialize in capturing stunning senior portraits, consider offering your senior clients family sessions as an add on to the senior session or as an additional session. You can even offer family mini sessions to the families of senior clients in the fall leading up to Christmas. They may want not only an updated family portrait, but also Christmas card photos to share with family and friends.

If this is something you want to add to your senior portrait offerings, create an email marketing campaign to your senior clients. Share a story and explain how important family photos are before their senior goes off to college. And if you decide to offer mini sessions, again an email marketing campaign would be great to get your scheduled booked up by existing clients first. Then, if you need to fill more spots, you can use social media to book more!

This expansion can attract new clients who may have different photography needs while still allowing you to specialize in senior portraits!

Tip #2: Collaborate with Niche-Adjacent Businesses To Grow Your Photography ServicesCollaborating with businesses that share a similar demographic or aesthetic can amplify your reach and introduce your services to a broader audience.

Look for local businesses that cater to high school seniors or share your passion for capturing memorable moments.

For example, teaming up with a boutique specializing in trendy clothing for seniors can create synergies between fashion and photography, enhancing the overall client experience.

A great way to team up with a boutique is through your model team! Boutiques are always looking for models to model the clothing for social media. You could work with the boutique to use the models on your model team and you could even take the photos so you get in front of their audience. Your models will love participating in something like this and you will gain more exposure for your business.

Another idea is to work with the boutique on helping seniors with what to wear. You could see if the boutique offers styling services that you could suggest to your senior clients. Or, ask the boutique if they would like to offer a small discount for your senior clients. They could give you a card with the discount code that you could include in your welcome packets to your seniors. This ensures that your seniors know about their business, which will in turn give you a beneficial relationship with another business.

By cross-promoting each other’s services through joint marketing efforts or exclusive offers, you can leverage each other’s customer base and create valuable partnerships.

These collaborations not only help you reach new clients but also reinforce your presence within your niche community.

Tip #3: Leverage Social Media to Showcase Your NicheYou know I love social media and what it can do for your business! And when it comes to the senior niche, the more seniors you show on social the more seniors will want to book you for their senior photos!

Make sure you are showcasing your niche, what you want to photograph in your posts on social! I once had a senior specifically tell me the reason she booked me was because I looked very much in demand. I looked in demand because I was consistently posting senior clients on social!

Even if you have to create the content by using models until you have a full calendar of senior clients, do it. Seniors want to see seniors on your social media to know that you both specialize in seniors and are also in demand!

Make sure you are sharing more than just the final images! Seniors today want to see the process, behind-the-scenes videos of you working with clients. They want to see your face and personality so they can connect with you, client testimonials, and more.

Engage with your audience by responding to comments, hosting Q&A sessions, going live and offering tips to help potential senior clients prep for their session and running giveaways or contests.

By consistently sharing content that resonates with your target audience, you can attract more clients who are interested in your niche.

Easy Reel Ideas to Broaden Your ReachOne tip I want to share with you is to test out reels! This will help you figure out what your audience wants to see from you because we don’t know what will resonate.

Remember: reels get shown to more than just your followers. It is the perfect way to broaden your reach. Just the other day I posted probably one of the simplest reels I’ve ever posted. It was simply two of my senior models twirling on the beach. It has gotten 145k views! Crazy! But it showed me a reel recipe that I should probably repeat to continue to give my audience what they want!

So I created another similar reel that has gotten 33k views! I am getting a ton of new followers because of these two reels! So don’t be afraid to test out different reels to find the right reel recipe to showcase your niche. And feel free to steal these two reel ideas for your own social media!

Grow Your Photography Services While Staying True To YouAnd there you have it – 3 ways to grow your photography services while still staying in your niche!

Remember, staying true to your niche doesn’t mean limiting your growth opportunities.

By expanding your service offerings, collaborating with niche-adjacent businesses, and leveraging social media, you can grow your photography business while still staying true to your unique style and specialty.

Today, we’ll discuss essential strategies to drive traffic to your website. Whether you’re new to photography or striving to boost your online presence, these tips are your ticket to attracting more clients and boosting your business.

Before we get started with tips on how to drive traffic to your website, you first want to know how much traffic your website is getting! Are you getting lots of traffic? Are those visitors converting? How do you know?

Knowing your website analytics is an important piece of information! Google Analytics and Google Search Console are both great options for finding out this information.

Now let’s get to the tips for driving traffic to your website! In this post, we’re diving into a topic that’s essential for every modern senior photographer — 5 Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Website.

5 Ways to Drive Traffic To Your Photography WebsiteTip #1: Master SEO OptimizationOne of the best ways to get more eyes on your website? Make friends with search engines. It’s not as daunting as it sounds.

Start by figuring out what words and phrases people are typing into Google when they’re looking for a photographer like you. Then, sprinkle those magic words into your website’s content. Page titles, image descriptions, the copy on that page, and more. Think of it as giving Google a little nudge to say, “Hey, check out my awesome website!”

Getting your website found in a search starts with naming each page with keywords. Each page is ranked separately by Google, not your website as a whole, so make sure you have names for each page of your site as well as each blog post on your site that are searchable terms.

Tip #2: Craft Compelling ContentAnother key strategy for driving traffic to your website is consistently creating compelling and valuable content that not only your potential clients will want to see but also Google will like so you can show up in searches.

A lot of times, and I’m guilty of this too, is we create our websites and move on to something else, hoping our website is doing the job for us to market our services. But in order to continually get ranked by Google which drives search traffic to your site, you have to consistently create content. You gotta dish out the good stuff. That means regular updates with blog posts, client testimonials, and updated images from recent senior sessions.

If you don’t continually update content then there is no real incentive for anyone to return to your site but if you create compelling content that gives your audience information they are looking for…you guessed it…it keeps them coming back for more.

And spice it up with videos and infographics? That’s like adding extra flavor – it’s bound to get people talking and sharing!

Tip #3: Harness the Power of Social MediaHere we go again …talking about social media but It’s not just for posting your content – it’s a powerhouse for driving traffic to your website.

Pick the platforms where your audience hangs out, then start sharing your awesome content. Throw inconsistent posts, engage with followers by replying to comments, and further conversation by sliding into those DMs. It’s all about building a community and making people feel like they’re part of something awesome. They will start to follow you on social media, then go to that link in bio to learn more and if you have it set up, you will direct them right to your website!!

Pro tip: every time you update your website, change up the design, add a new testimonial, blog, or more…SHARE IT ON SOCIAL!! If you don’t tell people a reason to go check out your website, then they won’t! Be your own traffic director, pointing people in the right direction aka your website!!!

Create screen records of you visiting specific pages on your website, telling your followers what to check out. Show followers via your story what you are working on, and let them see what else you do for your business besides take photos.

If a senior has given you a testimonial, share that you are adding it to your website as a feature and tag that senior so she will share it and her followers will see it!

And don’t forget to use call to actions that very clearly tell people to visit your website!! The sky’s the limit when it comes to creating content for social media that directs people to your website!

So, get social and watch that traffic roll in!

Tip #4: Foster Audience EngagementPinterest plays a big role in potentially driving traffic to a website, yours included. A lot of times, Pinterest is used as a search engine dare I say in place of Google!

I know I use Pinterest all the time to find things I am searching for which tells me lots of other people are as well. Seniors and parents of seniors are using Pinterest to look for ideas for their senior sessions. If a helpful blog post you wrote comes up in that search, guess who is getting more traffic to their site…yep you!

Make sure you not only have a pin it button on your website and blog so others consuming your content can pin things but also be sure to include a Pinterest Graphic in all of your blog posts. Canva has a lot of great templates for these that allow you to create an eye-catching PIN with your photos and keywords someone may search for on Pinterest.

By pinning this graphic yourself to your Pinterest, using keywords in the title of the pin and the description of the pin, you can potentially get eyes on your pin, which leads to clicks on the pin which takes traffic to your website and blog.

Tip #5: Collaborate for GrowthCollaboration can be a powerful way to drive traffic to your website. Partner with local businesses for joint projects, feature local businesses in blog posts or do social media takeovers. By tapping into each other’s audiences, you can expand your reach and attract new visitors to your website. Plus, collaborating with others can lead to valuable connections and opportunities for growth.

Here are a few ideas to get you started…Do you work with a specific hair and makeup artist for your senior sessions? If so, do an interview-style blog post that allows your potential clients to get to know the person they will be working with on photoshoot day!

Another option, create a YouTube video showing exactly what it is like to work with your professional hair and makeup artist. For both of these, be sure to share them on social media, have the artist share it with her audience as well, and boom you are driving new traffic to your website!

Team up with a local boutique for a photo shoot, share all about it in a blog post, link your website in that blog post as well as the boutiques and of course, share it on social media!! Drive traffic to this blog post aka your website by sharing behind the scenes in your story, final images in a reel or carousel post, and ask the boutique to share as well.

Brainstorm some ways and businesses you can collaborate with and let me know what you come up with! I would love to hear from you and offer any advice or suggestions!

In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence and effective marketing strategies are essential for growing your photography business. That’s why I’m excited to share with you five proven tactics that will not only help you expand your email list but also elevate your brand and attract more high school seniors to your services. In this post, we’re diving into a topic that’s crucial for photographers looking to thrive in a competitive market…

5 Tactics that WORK to get Seniors on Your Email ListTip #1: Offer Irresistible FreebiesOne of the best ways to entice seniors and/or parents of seniors to join your email list is by offering them something of value in return. We want their emails for future marketing efforts, follow-up, and client communication.

An attractive freebie serves as a compelling incentive for seniors and parents to join your email list which in turn gives you a chance to market your services and get booked. In a competitive market, offering an irresistible freebie sets you apart from competitors who may not provide such incentives. It distinguishes you as someone who goes above and beyond to cater to their client’s needs.

But what kind of freebies are most appealing to high school seniors? The best thing you can do is brainstorm ideas for freebies and ask yourself three questions about your ideas…

  1. Does it solve a problem for my clients?
  2. Does it answer a question my potential client may have?
  3. Is it extremely valuable to my ideal client? Will they benefit from having this/using this?

If your freebie idea is a yes to all three questions, then that is a great freebie for your audience.

Be sure to cater the freebie to your specific ideal client. Use the freebie to help provide information that will answer a question, bust through a misconception, or help them overcome a pain point.

Some ideas for freebies are:

  • a free style guide to help the seniors feel confident in their session
  • Session planning guide
  • Session packing checklist
  • a posing tips guide so they can feel at ease during their shoot (which leads to great photos!),
  • or even a limited-time discount on their senior sessionBy providing something they find valuable, you’re not only incentivizing them to sign up but also showcasing your expertise and generosity.Through sharing your expertise and showing up consistently in their inbox with valuable content, you are staying front of mind for the subscribers on your email list. That way when they are ready to book a senior session, who will they think of first? YOU!!

Sharing valuable information also enhances the perceived value of your services so that parents and seniors are more likely to share their positive experiences with friends and family, leading to word-of-mouth referrals. This organic marketing can significantly expand your client base and reputation.

Tip #2: Host an Exclusive GiveawayAnother idea to grow your email list is to host a giveaway. Make sure the prize aligns with your target audience’s interests. Then, promote it on social media, and consider collaborating with local businesses to expand its reach. Clear instructions and transparent rules are essential for maintaining credibility and trust with participants.

Tip #3: Create Compelling Opt-In Forms (make it easy to say “yes!” to your email list)The design and placement of your opt-in forms can significantly impact your email sign-up rate. Make sure your forms are visually appealing, easy to find, and clearly communicate the benefits of subscribing. Use photos, your brand colors, brand fonts and speak directly to your ideal client in the copy.

Consider using an email platform that has beautiful templates for pop-up forms, slide-ins, or embedded forms to help you with stand out designs that will capture the attention of your ideal client.

A/B testing different variations can help you determine which ones resonate best with your audience by seeing which version gets more clicks or sign-ups.

And on that note, don’t be afraid to test things! I have tried many different opt in forms as well as many different freebies to determine what works best for my audience. If something doesn’t work, I try something else. It’s all about being willing to look at the analytics, your specific ideal client and testing different things to find out what works best for your ideal subscriber and client.

Tip #4: Provide Valuable ContentIn today’s digital age, people are bombarded with information. To stand out and keep subscribers engaged, it’s essential to deliver valuable content consistently.

It’s also important to tell potential subscribers what that valuable content is so they know exactly what they are going to get by giving you their email address. Be clear in what you will send, what your freebie will help them with and more. And most importantly, deliver this!

The biggest mistake I made when I first started an email list was not delivering on my end. I created a list, asked people to be a part of it and then dropped the ball when it came to sending stuff. I only sent information when I needed something which is the worst way to use email marketing.

You want to send out valuable information that helps your list. You want to use this valuable information to nurture a relationship with the people on your list so that when you want to share an exciting announcement or special, they are actually interested in hearing or actually reading about it.

What do I say in my content?Whether it’s educational blog posts, tips to help them prep for senior year, tips for senior sessions, model team information, behind-the-scenes videos, or highlights of senior photo sessions, make sure your emails provide value and resonate with your audience’s interests. And don’t forget the parents in your email content!! You could run an entire email campaign directed specifically to the parents of a high school senior and provide valuable content for a parent!

Be sure to always include a clear call-to-action in your emails, prompting subscribers to take the next step, whether it’s reading a blog post, booking a session, visiting your website, or following you on social media. Tell them what you want them to do!

Then take a look your email performance metrics, such as open rates and click-through rates, to refine your content strategy and continually improve your email marketing efforts based on what is working.

Tip #5: Talk About Your Email List! All too often I hear from photographers that no one is joining their email list or that they only have a few people on their list. And my first question is….are you telling anyone about the freebie or the email list??

It’s easy to think that just because we create a great freebie, a compelling opt in form and have it on our website that surely people will enter their emails. But unfortunately, it’s not that simple.

As we have heard many many times, it takes someone seeing something over and over before they take action. Most of your potential clients are not going to your website every single day to see that opt in form to potentially enter their email address and get on your list. So that means we have to consistently share about the freebie, share the benefits of being on our email list in order to get get people to join the list! This is not a create it, post it and get results type marketing. It is something we continually have to share about in order to grow it.

Here are some ways to talk about your freebie and your email list:* Social media – I know, I know I talk about social media a lot on this podcast but the reason is…because it is a great way to reach your target audience and tell them what you want them to know! In this case, about your freebie and email list! Or if you are doing a giveaway to get people on your email list as I mentioned above, share that on social!! And this means at the end of your post captions, in specific reels sharing about your freebie, in your bio, in a highlight story under your bio. * Email – in any email communication you send out have your signature share about your freebie. * Your website – This is obvious but have info about your freebie on your website with the email capture form. * Pinterest – Share it on pinterest so anyone using that as a search engine will discover your freebie, follow the link to your website, enter their email and get on your list! * Blog Posts – add the freebie information and a link to the opt in form in all your blog posts

In a nutshell, anywhere you can advertise your freebie, gives you the potential to increase the number of potential clients that join your list! The more that join your list, the more you can build a relationship with, nurture and convert into booked clients!!

Pro tip: add talking about your freebie and promoting your freebie to your content calendar at least 2-3 times a week so that you don’t forget and it becomes a habit.

Grow Your Email List to Grow Your Photography BusinessBuilding and growing your email list takes time and effort, but the payoff is well worth it.

Implementing these five tactics:

  • offering irresistible freebies,
  • hosting exclusive giveaways,
  • creating compelling opt-in forms,
  • providing valuable content, and
  • fostering personal connections

can attract more high school seniors to your email list. This will ultimately grow your photography business!

Today, I’m sharing 5 tips for using the power of TikTok to promote and grow your high school senior photography business! For some of you, diving into the world of TikTok might sound intimidating. And for others, you might already be there and want to take your TikTok content to the next level!

Whether you don’t even have an account created yet, or you just wrapped up completing the latest TikTok challenge, today’s episode will help you make the most out of this dynamic platform. So, let’s jump in!

5 Tips to Catapult Your Senior Photography Business Using The Power of TikTokTip #1: Showcase Your Portfolio Creatively on TikTokTikTok is a visual playground, and it’s the perfect place to give potential clients a glimpse into your photography world. Use TikTok to create and post short and visually captivating videos that showcase the best of your senior photo sessions.

Don’t be shy – use the opportunity to highlight your unique photography style, editing skills, and the overall atmosphere you capture in your senior portraits. This not only establishes your brand but also serves as a virtual portfolio that can leave a lasting impression on your audience.

Tip #2: Behind-the-Scenes ContentBehind-the-scenes content does a great job of removing any mystery behind your business. It allows the viewers to feel more connected to you, too. When potential clients see behind-the-scenes content from you, they can feel like they know you better and trust you as a senior photographer.

As a result, they will be more likely to book you over other photographers that they might not feel as connected to. So don’t be afraid to showcase the magic behind your lens! Use TikTok to share behind-the-scenes glimpses of your photo shoots, your style, your processes, your shooting locations, etc.

You can also take your audience on a journey. From setting up your equipment to interacting with clients and capturing those candid, in-between moments during the sessions, they will love seeing behind the curtain. Adding a personal touch by letting your personality shine through in these videos can help build a deeper connection with your audience as well.

Tip #3: Engage with Trends and Challenges on TikTokNow I know this one might sound a little intimidating, but hear me out! It’s true – keeping up with TikTok trends and challenges can be a game-changer for your business. Start with at least one TikTok trend or challenge that aligns with your business and your style, and see where it takes you! You might just enjoy participating in these trends and challenges more than you think.

So, my challenge to you is to find creative ways to incorporate these trends into your content. Participate in popular challenges or use trending sounds to increase the visibility of your videos. This can attract a wider audience. Most importantly, remember that you are participating to promote your business. Riding the wave of trends can give your content that extra boost and keep your audience engaged along the way. When you have a wider, more engaged audience, more potential clients are likely to stumble upon your page, see all of your great content, and book you as their photographer.

Tip #4: Educational Content on TikTokAnother idea for TikTok content is to position yourself as an expert in senior photography by sharing valuable tips and tricks with your audience. It’s true: TikTok is more than just dances, trends, and challenges! Viewers do like to come to TikTok to learn a thing or two, so showcasing your knowledge could be a big win.

For high school seniors specifically, create videos offering advice on choosing outfits, posing ideas, or tips for capturing natural and authentic expressions. This is the type of content that high school seniors will want to see when it comes to senior photography. Your expertise will not only resonate with your audience but also attract potential clients seeking guidance. Educational content is a powerful way to showcase your knowledge and build credibility in the senior photography niche.

Tip #5: Client Testimonials and HighlightsAnd finally, there’s nothing quite like the power of social proof these days, especially on TikTok. That’s what makes TikTok such a great platform for featuring testimonials from satisfied precious clients! Ask previous clients if they would like to be featured in a client testimonial for your TikTok page.

And for those who agree to participate, let their authentic experiences add credibility and authenticity to your brand through their stories and experiences with you! Additionally, you can also create highlight reels showcasing the diversity of your senior photography work. Through testimonials, you can celebrate the joy, laughter, and unique moments you capture, creating a compelling narrative around your brand.

Use The Power Of TikTok to Promote Your Senior Photography BusinessAnd there you have it – 5 tips for using the power of TikTok to promote and grow your high school senior photography business! Remember, creatively showcasing your portfolio, sharing behind-the-scenes content, engaging with trends and challenges, sharing educational content, and highlighting client testimonials are all things that you can do to take your TikTok, and therefore your business, to the next level.

Incorporating these tips into your TikTok strategy can make a significant impact on promoting and growing your senior photography business. Stay consistent, engage with your TikTok audience, and let your creativity shine through!

Senior spokesmodel teams are one of my favorite things to talk about and teach my students about because I truly believe it’s one of the best things I could have done for my photography business! This time of year is the best for recruiting the next year’s models, so I thought it was the perfect time to share 6 mistakes to avoid with your senior spokesmodel team. Over my 13 years of running spokesmodel teams, I’ve made my fair share of mistakes and I hope these tips help you avoid some of the same pitfalls!

What is a spokesmodel team? A spokesmodel team or program is a group of high school seniors that represent your photography business during their senior year. They help spread the word about your business and help you grow by sharing your name with their community. A team works well for this age group because seniors love sharing about their photos and their experiences! When a senior tells their friends about it, that means more than any marketing we could do on our own. It’s a great source of word of mouth referrals and social proof.

The basic structure of a spokesmodel team is that seniors join the team through an application process, interview and in person meeting. You have a set of incentives such as photoshoots in exchange for their time, photos from the shoots that they can share to help market your business, fun events and group activities to create a bond within the team and more! There are a list of requirements that you give your team or a list of things you want them to do in exchange for the perks or incentives. You and your team work together so everyone gets something out of this program and so that it is a great experience for all!! The exact details will be specific to you and your business.

So now that we know what a spokesmodel team is… let’s dive into some mistakes to avoid!

Mistake #1 – Assuming that models do all the work! This was a huge mistake I made in the beginning. I truly thought that I would do very little and my models would do the rest. But it’s not true. Model programs are work, I am not going to lie to you about that! You have to be willing to put in more work than the models because its our business not theirs. The team will absolutely help you market and create buzz, but we do all the behind the scenes work.

Mistake #2 – Over promising and underdelivering! We want so much for our program to work and for the models to love every minute of it! So we promise everything: lots of shoots, activities, photos, and more. But if we do too much (or offer to do too much!), we may wind up resenting the programs we’ve built. Take the time to only promise what you know you can deliver – and then blow them all away instead of overpromising and not being able to actually do something you said you would. Trust me, they’ll remember that! By underpromising a little bit, you’ll have the capacity to blow them away with something extra later on!

Mistake #3 – Thinking more is better! Here’s the thing: you don’t need a massive spokesmodel team for it to help you out. Instead of getting overwhelmed with a big team that you really don’t need, remember that small can be just as powerful. When I started out in 2011 with my first team, I only had 4 girls and it was amazing! As you grow, future models will hear about the opportunity and become interested! Give those few an amazing experience, have them share that experience with their friends while you share your love of your team and excitement for your program and others will see it!!

Mistake #4 – Just winging it! Going into a spokesmodel program without a plan is a huge mistake! I can attest to that because that is exactly what I did my first year! I had no idea what I was doing, didn’t fully understand the program strategy and just jumped in with both feet and no plan. But it got me started and I learned from that mistake! Now, I make sure there’s always a plan for each group. This makes it so much easier to recruit your models (and get their parents on board). Take the time to plan out incentives, referral rewards, shoots, events, and exceptions from the start.

Mistake #5 – Thinking referrals are automatic! Back in 2011, when I first started my program, I was under the impression that I would automatically get referrals and that referrals was the only way to measure the success of my program. But, the reality is that this isn’t the only goal of a spokesmodel team. For me, one of the biggest rewards is having a creative outlet each year. I can design shoots I might not otherwise have time or energy for. It also means I almost always have models to capture for my outlets – like social media, websites, and blogs. So while a full calendar is definitely a perk – it shouldn’t be the only reason you’re doing this!

Mistake #6 – Not charging enough! When I started my spokesmodel team, I didn’t make anyone pay to be a part of it. And that was a huge mistake! Running a model team can be expensive. When you think about the cost to join, determine (at the very least) the amount it would take to cover your time involved. Remember that your involvement includes planning, editing, shooting, and everything in between. Remember a model team only works if you too are getting something out of it! You do not want to resent the team because you spent all this money and time and got nothing in return for your hard work!

By avoiding these common mistakes you can start a senior spokesmodel program off on the right foot and be successful!! Even with all the mistakes I made in the beginning, I still believe that having a model program is one of the best things I have ever done and continue to do for my business. It has helped establish me as the go-to senior photographer in my area and continues to bring in tons of referrals and book my calendar each year! And I know it can do that for you too!!

When it comes to being a senior photographer, there’s undoubtedly a few things we have to do well. Posing and helping our clients pose is certainly at the top of that list. Seniors want to feel confident and like they know what they’re doing when they come in for their portraits, so it’s important that we can make them feel that way! I’ve always been a firm believer in the idea that the more we can explain, show, and tell them, the more confident everyone will be. One of my favorite ways to approach posing is by mirroring poses to my seniors. So today, I’m going to share some easy posing tips for senior portrait photographers so that you’re comfortable mirroring poses for your seniors, too!

When I say “mirroring poses”, I literally mean that you’re demonstrating exactly what to do for your clients. This allows your seniors to see what you mean and are trying to tell them! You can see this in action HERE. Now, onto the tips…

Practice in a mirror. Yep. It sounds easy, but it’s the truth! You have to be able to do the poses you want your seniors to do! Practicing in a mirror helps you understand what the pose looks and feels like. This makes it much easier to explain and coach your seniors into the right positions.

Break down the pose. While you’re mirroring the pose for a client, break the pose down into smaller bits. When you’re explaining it, start with their feet. Then maybe their hands. Then onto the expression you want. Smaller chunks of direction are easier to digest and process! This will lead to less frustration on everyone’s part!

Encourage them! Everyone feels awkward in front of the camera. It’s a fact of life! So, don’t forget to encourage your clients as they’re working through the pose. If you want them to adjust something, mention it! They want their photos to look good and are trusting you to make sure that happens. Be there for them and help them understand what they’re doing well (or what they’re not!).

What about moving poses? Something I’m asked A LOT is how to incorporate poses with movements? Many photographers will ask how to prompt their clients but also how to make sure the images come out clearly and in focus. My biggest tip for moving poses is to repeat them at least twice, while letting your client know that you’re just taking extra shots to make sure they’re perfect. Some of my favorite moving poses include walking, twirling with a dress and swaying slightly side to side.

If you want more tips on poses with movement, make sure you check out the new Senior Posing Academy! I have so many great tips for posing ideas, how to pose clients, and how to get confident with your posing options. Click HERE to learn more about the Senior Posing Academy.

A bonus tip! While it’s easy to overshoot and overshare final images, I want to encourage you to remember that the more work you do at the session, the more you have to do after the session. Time is money so don’t give away too many images. Set a limit per pose or outfit, only shoot on one memory card and remember that you don’t have to repeat every pose in every outfit! Some outfits will help dictate your posing and it’s okay to follow that – and only that. And, if something isn’t working… move on! You don’t have to make every pose work perfectly every time. It’s okay to try something new.

Need help with posing? I have a brand new course called The Senior Posing Academy (to be released soon)! This course will teach you the importance of posing, the entire posing formula and show you exactly how this formula works on senior sessions! If you are interested in being the first to know when this course is available, be sure to go to the waitlist and add your name so you’ll be the first to know (and get a special discount). And don’t forget to grab my FREE Posing Guide, 1 Pose 50 Ways.
