Melksham Town made it two from two as they visited Paulton Rovers for their first away trip in the Southern League First Division. After a goalless first half, Neikell Plummer scored his second goal in as many games to help Melksham to all three points in a victory that was much more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.
My World Radio Day interview with goalkeeping legend, Steve Phillips, covered a number of subjects, including his big break at Bristol City, his current role at Yeovil Town and his involvement with the Seniors World Cup.

On Saturday April 22nd I made a brief return to the Somer Valley airwaves, to talk about the Roger Stone Memorial Cup Final. I very much enjoyed my interview with Richard Burgess and it was good to have a chance to reflect on last weeks Radstock Town performance, putting into perspective their defeat at the hands of Clevedon Town. Midsomer Norton Rugby Club met Chippenham Rugby Club in the Final of the Bath Combination Cup on April 19th. Norton have narrowed the gap on their Wiltshire rivals in recent years, now playing at the equivalent level in the league pyramid.

Football Association Chairman, Greg Clarke, has described the football child sex abuse scandal as one of the biggest crises in the history of the FA. I spoke with Jon Pike, Chief Executive of the Somerset Football Association and Shirley Needham, the FAs Welfare Officer in Somerset & Wiltshire, to understand more about how this scandal is effecting grassroots football in the county and what those affected can do to get support.
As part of our 50th Anniversary celebrations of the day Welton Rovers played Bournemouth & Boscombe in the FA Cup, I was lucky enough to speak with Bournemouth Club Secretary, Neil Vacher, about their memories of the game and how the Club has evolved since the 1960s.
Saturday the 26th of November marks the 50th Anniversary of the day Welton Rovers played Bournemouth and Boscombe, now known at AFC Bournemouth, in the FA Cup First Round. The Somer Valley Sport Show produced a special programme to celebrate Welton's hero's of that day - the Class of 66.

This weeks Bath Rugby Press Conference was a hurried affair, with Bath beating Exeter on Sunday only to play Leicester Tigers in the LV Cup this coming Friday. I spoke to England U20 International Zach Mercer who was looking forward to taking the field against Tigers under the Friday Night lights! We also had a chat about Zach’s pathway from schoolboy rugby to Premiership Rugby.

In the wake of the FA's latest Grassroots Football Survey, I enjoyed a really disvussion with Ian Lanning, Manager of Radstock Town's Under 18s, Martin Cox, Manager of Farrington Gurney FC and Bryn Hawkins Chairman of the Mid-Somerset League.
Fog stopped play at Paulton Rovers last night, although the visitors enjoyed the better of the early exchanges. Stay tuned for an enjoyable exchange with Paulton's Ibrahima Diallo and Joe Chandler.
Its been a while since we had a musical compilation to shout about, I think Radstock Towns Under 18s victory at Woking probably deserves one!
The second half may have started without the fireworks of the first, but the game was still end to end, with Morgan Skipp’s long range effort only narrowly missing the target after two minutes and the impressive Delan Appau going close for Woking, four mutes later.
Radstock took the lead for the first time in the game on the hour mark, when another long range effort from Skipp managed to sneak into the bottom left hand corner. Woking were looking increasing troubled at the back, with a series on lengthy cramp related stoppages involving centre half, Charlie Hester-Cook, finally leading to his substitution after 65 minutes. Two minutes later Radstock had their fifth goal, when Sobers turned provider with a wicked cross from the left, that was smartly put into the net by Lewis Blannin.
With only five minutes to go, Woking’s frustrations finally boiled over and an ill-tempered exchange between both sets of players resulted in both sides being reduced to ten men. As the seconds ticked by Radstock manager, Ian Lanning, emptied his substitutes bench, packing the defence to hold out until full time. Woking threw everything they had at the Miners, but could only find a consolation goal with the last kick of the game, Radstock securing a famous victory by five goals to four.
Radstock’s young side were well supported on their trip to Surrey by a vocal Miners contingent, yet their pre-match optimism turned to trepidation within seconds of the kick-off when a high ball over the top of the Radstock defence left goalkeeper Jack Scrivens in no man's land, gifting Josh Greenleaf the opening goal. Matters went from bad to worse when Woking scored their second only two minutes later, Greenleaf cutting in from the left wing and beating Scrivens with a shot from the edge of the area.
It looked like the Miners were in awe of both their hosts and their surroundings, the Laithwaite Community Stadium every bit the stage for a National League football club. Yet Radstock showed a resilience that belied their years, Morgan Skipp conjuring a thunderbolt from 30 yards that the Woking keeper, Sam Mason, could only pick out of the back of his net. With less than five minutes on the clock the game had already produced three goals and the fireworks decorating the nights sky behind the Chris Lane Terrace, were being more than rivalled by the action on the pitch.
Having got themselves back into the game disaster struck again for the Miners on 22 minutes when Radstock Captain Tyler Bryant brought down Greenleaf for a penalty, which he duly converted for his hat-trick. Greenleaf could have had a fourth on the half hour, only to be denied by the linesman’s flag.
Yet Radstock weathered the storm and on 35 minutes snatched a goal back through the excellent work of Olav Haugerud on the left wing, conjuring up a defence splitting pass that found a smart finish from Rico Sobers. Woking were visibly rattled by Radstock’s unlikely fight back and failed to deal with an excellent move between Skipp and Sobers that saw the latter net his second goal of the game on the stroke of half time.
Radstock Town's Under 18s prepare for a historic game in the FA Youth Cup this Thursday, away to Woking. No Miners side has made it to the 3rd qualifying round of this competition before and hopes are high that Radstock's young guns can make it to the 1st Round proper.
I caught up with Ian Lanning, Manager of Radstock's U18s, and asked him what the game means to the Club as well as getting his take on the state of Youth Football in this country.
This week I caught up with Bath Rugby second row, Charlie Ewels. We looked back at a big win against local rivals Gloucester and Charlie's inclusion in the England development squad.
Last month the Football Association launched the 2016 Grassroots Football Survey, gathering much needed feedback from players, coaches, referees, staff and volunteers on the state of the grassroots game. At a time when the professional game is in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, grassroots football continues to represent what is pure about our National game, but is it getting the support it deserves?
This is the second year the Football Asscoiation has run a survey collecting feedback from the general public on the work that it does, primarily through its County Associations. Last years survey was completed by nearly 30,000 people involved with football, across the country. Facilities, the state of pitches and changing rooms, were the focus for many respondents.

On Tuesday we chatted to Timsbury Athletic first team manager Dom Eatherden. As well as talking about how the team are doing this season we also talked about the close relationship that exists in the village between the football and cricket club.

Paulton Rovers entertained Evesham United at Winterfield Road in the Southern League Division 1 South and West. After an equally indifferent start to the season, both teams were looking for a win the would reinject much needed momentum back into their respective campaigns. Somer Valley FM’s Sports Show is named the national Sports Show of the Year.
The show, which has been led by Ian Nockolds for eight years, was given the Gold award for sports broadcasting at the Community Radio Awards. The inaugural awards took place at Birmingham City University, on Saturday 10th September, to a sold out gala with over 35 community radio stations being recognised for their broadcasting excellence.
The Somer Valley Sport Show has broadcast weekly, promoting the news and fixtures of sports clubs across North East Somerset. Ian Nockolds has been involved with sports broadcasting on Somer Valley FM since the station was piloted at Somervale School in August 2006. He said,
“As the Sport Show has evolved, it has been our mission to provide local sports coverage, focusing on participants and clubs overlooked by commercial and public service radio, produced by amateur broadcasters to a professional standard”.
The Sports Show has engaged volunteers across the generations, not only those involved with the Clubs they cover, but everyone from school students to retired former players. Today, the Sport Show team includes Allan Trinder and Evan Dando, with Saturday Live produced and presented by Richard Burgess.
The awards were hosted by Somer Valley FM’s manager Dom Chambers, “As I was hosting the evening you can imagine my pleasure at the announcement and welcoming Ian on to the stage to collect the award. Ian’s work with our Sports programme has been a considerable personal achievement. It is exemplary community broadcasting from empowering local clubs with a voice, to the skill building of young volunteers and the live match commentaries. Ian has brought local clubs together on the central platform of the Somer Valley FM studio. This recognition is richly deserved and my hearty congratulations to Ian and the team.
On receiving the award Ian Nockolds thanked all the volunteers who have been involved with the Show since it began, before making special mention of the Clubs, without whom there would be no content.
“This award isn’t just about the quality of our sport coverage, it’s about recognising the hard work and commitment of the volunteers at every Club we cover including Midsomer Norton Rugby Club, Welton Rovers Football Club, Radstock Town Football Club, Paulton Rovers Football Club, Midsomer Norton Cricket Club, Writhlington Tennis Club and many more. Looking to the future, the Somer Valley Sports team are hoping to build upon their success and encourage more local Clubs to get involved so that even larger audiences can celebrate and support local sport.

We don't normally do book reviews on the Sport Show, but I made an exception for Nige Tassell, author of The Bottom Corner: A Season with the Dreamers of Non-League Football. Nige told about his love for non-league football and his expereinces researching his book.
On Tuesday, September 6th I had the pleasure of meeting Bath Rugbys new Director of Rugby, Todd Blackadder for the first time. We looked back on a historic win over Northampton and considered what it meant in the context of Baths season.

Non League Day 2016 saw a Western League First Division encounter between Radstock Town and Roman Glass St George, at a rainswept Southfields Recreation Ground. The Miners were still looking for the first home win of the season, but would it come against Roman Glass?
Midsomer Norton Rugby Club travelled to Trowbridge to continue their pre-season preparations. Despite the balmy August climate, it was rainy season in Wiltshire, making it difficult for rugby players and commentators alike!

English World Cup winners are few and far between, so to find one in Midsomer Norton is a rare treat indeed! Steve Phillips, the former Bristol Rovers and Bristol City goalkeeper, currently plying his trade at Bath City, told me about what it was like to represent his country at the recent Seniors World Cup tournament in Tailand.

On Tuesday, June 28th, I met up with an old friend of the Sport Show, Malcolm Tucker, one of the great characters of Timsbury, to talk about the fortunes of the village cricket club. We talked about Malcolm's role at the Club, as well as some of the teams recent results as well as their aspirations for the season.
Summer is here and what better way to spend an evening that going out for a bike ride. Robert Weeks from Somer Valley Cycling Club, joined us in the studio for a chat about the Club, the variety of activities they organise and the range of abilities they cover.
Celebrating its 40th season, Mendip Hockey Club welcomed over 60 members to celebrate its annual awards evening, recognising many of the years contributions from the 3 ladies teams and 2 men’s teams.
We were joined by Mike Bristowe in the studio, who told us about his time at the Club, his love for the game and explained the “Back to Hockey” initiative, designed to get people of all abilities interested in the game.
We marked Local Radio Day with a Special Sport Show featuring many of our usual contributors and some new ones. Nick Potter from Midsomer Norton Cricket Club kicked off the show, followed by Tony Walsh from Paulton Rovers and Jack Rowles from Midsomer Norton Rugby Club. In the second half of the show we welcomed new contributors Ian Alexander from Camvale Tennis Club and Robert Weeks from the Somer Valley Cycling Club, along with long standing contributor Gareth Paisey from Welton Rovers.
Ultimately, Paulton Rovers fightback this season proved too little too late, but the man who gave the Paulton faithful hope of an unlikely great escape was Tony Ricketts. We caught up with Tony to get his thoughts on a difficult season for Rovers and to ask the all important question about whether he'll remain at Winterfield Road next season.
Welton went into the break 1 nil up. For much of the first half the Green Army had been treated to a fine display, although a sluggish finish to the half didn't augur well. Could Welton keep Gillingham at bay and finish their season at West Clewes on a high?
Welton Rovers entertained Gillingham in their final home game of the Western League Premier Division season. Having been relegated on Saturday, Welton were playing for nothing other than pride, but would they finally be able to give the Green Army something to shout about?
Second half action from the Southern Counties Play Off Final. Midsomer Norton RFC and Aylesbury RFC locked at 17 all at the break. One of these teams was only 40 minutes from making history, but who would it be?
Midsomer Norton RFC entertained Southern Counties North runners up, Aylesbury RFC, in a winner takes all play off showdown at Norton Down. For the visitors, this was their third successive year in the play offs, but Norton had never been in a position to play for South West Division One Rugby. Today history would be made - for someone!
Second half action from the Tatnam Ground where Poole Town restart with a 1 nil advantage. But will it be enough to secure the victory that will take the Southern League title and with it promotion into the National League South.
Poole Town entertain Dunstable Town in the Southern League Premier Division. A crowd of over 1000 packed into the Tatnam Ground to see if Poole could secure the victory they needed to guarantee the Championship and with it promotion.

With six game to go, Paulton needed to take maximum points from every game to stand any chance of retaining their Premier League status. Title chasing Poole needed the points for very different reasons, as they look to secure National League football for the first time in the Club's history. Paulton Rovers travelled to local rivals Frome Town on Easter Bank Holiday Monday, looking to repeat their victory in the first leg of the Elgraphico, from earlier in the month. Following that victory Frome had gone on a winning run that has seen them all but secure their Premier Division status for next season. Paulton desperately needed to take something from this game as they look to keep their own survival challenge going for a few weeks longer.
Half time at the Paulton Hospital Cup Final and I caught up with Mid-Somerset League Chairman, Bryn Hawkins. Bryn talked about the league structure and the army of volunteers who make it possible for the league to funtion.
After a highly entertaining first half, Coleford Athletic had a slender one nil lead. Chilcompton Sports Reserves had fought back from conceding early in the game and were dominating possession in the midfield, but could they turn possession into an equaliser, or would Coleford see out the final 45 minutes and retain their title?
This years Paulton Hospital Cup Final saw Coleford Athletic look to retain their title against Chilcompton Sports Reserves. Chilcompton of the Second Division would need to play at their best to have a chance against Premier League leaders Coleford.

The Melksham Mourinho speaks to Somer Valley FM ahead of the game that wasn't against Welton Rovers. As always, Darren had something for everyone - Paulton Rovers, Frome Town and of course Melksham Town.
On Tuesday we spoke to Nick Dewfall about the Walking Football group he's organised at Welton Rovers, every Thursday at 12 noon. With the New Year on the horizon walking football is a great way for the more mature gentleman to keep fit and make friends.
An injury stoppage during Paulton's encounter with Stratford Town gave me the chance to ask Ian Wainwright, a Producer at the Royal Shakespeare Company, about the work they are doing with the Premier League's Elite Coach Apprenticeship Scheme.
Paulton endured a difficult day in Stratford and I endured a difficult day in the commentary box! Neither of us were helped by the weather! I've salvaged as much of our commentary as I can, not that I'm expecting many listeners in Paulton! That said I'd like to thank Tony Walsh and Royal Shakespeare Company Producer, Ian Wainwright, for their support in difficult conditions.

Welton entertained Wells City on Tuesday night at West Clewes in the Somerset Premier Cup. Welton's league form has been woeful, but the Cups have been a different story. Which Welton side would the Green Army see tonight?
On Tuesday I spoke to Elinor Evans from Bath Rugby Ladies, on the eve of the Bath Chronicle Sports Awards and I was pleased to be proved right!
My latest visit to Farleigh House came in the week that Sam Burgess decided to leave Bath Rugby and return to Rugby League. Unsurprisingly, it was one of the busier press conferences I'd attended. However, it was also November 10th, the day before Remembrance Day and I was offered the chance to speak with Lance Corporal Semesa Rokoduguni. In this week, of all weeks, if we were going to talk about anything off the field, it wouldn't be Sam Burgess!
After an enthraling first half, Radstock were left to rue missed opportunities, having had the bulk of possession and a man advantage for much of the first 45 minutes. However, the loss of George Pawley before half time meant both sides were equal with 10 men. Keynsham has weathered the storm, could they push on for the win?
Radstock travelled the short distance to Keynsham for the second round of the Somerset Premier Cup. The Miners came into this game of the back of three straight league wins. Could they continue their good form in the County Cup competition?
Following a disappointing start to the Southern League season, Richard Fey announced he was stepping down as Paulton Rovers manager on October 21st. I spoke with Richard about the challenges he'd faced during his short time at the club and the circumstances leading up to his decision to resign.

Welton Rovers difficult season continued at home to Cadbury Heath on Tuesday night. Depletted by injuries, Welton made a positive start, but still managed to fall behind. Not dampened by the weather, Welton fought back in this exciting first 45 minutes of Western League football.
Paulton Rovers entertained St Neots Town on Saturday October 10th - Non League Day! Paulton still looking for a first win this season went into this fixture with hopes of taking all three points, but when you find yourself at the bottom of the table, luck is rarely on your side.
Paulton's difficult season continued against a youthful Yeovil Town XI in a game that should have restored some much needed confidence to the embattled Southern League side. Full match commentary comes from me and a rather reluctant Tony Walsh.
Bath Rugby Ladies have started their RFUW Championship South West 2 campaign in good form, as Elinor Evans told us on the weeks show. In an interesting interview that touched upon more than just the Clubs start to this season, we learnt about where the Ladies play and train and their interest in recruiting new players.
The Green Army travelled to Western League Champions, Melksham Town. On a baking hot day in the heart of Wiltshire , I suffered a technical meltdown - quite literally! At half time my ipad issued an overheating warning and promptly stopped broadcasting!
Fortunately, we managed to capture a thrilling first half of end to end action. At the final whistle Melksham ran out the winners, but the story of the first half is one that desperately needs telling! Enjoy - we did!

Earlier this month the Football Association announced that more than a quarter of a billion pounds would be invested in grassroots football over the next four years. In Somerset this will see just under £1 million spent on developing football across the county. The custodians of this investment are the Somerset Football Association, charged with delivering the FA’s National Game Strategy.

Last week Radstock Town Football Club announced plans to develop Southfields Recreation ground for the benefit of both the club and the local community. Concernewd their facilities are growing tired, the Club have put together an ambitious plan to completely reinvent the grounds for the community, working with the FA, Sport England and the NHS to and to develop the land around the site into a 'health campus'. I spoke with Club stalwart Dave Wilkinson about the plans and the presentation he gave to Radstock Town Council.

Midsomer Norton Rugby Club capped of an impressive end to their season with a second Vase Final appearance, this time in the Bath Combination Cup. I was joined by Nortons Alex Davis and guest summariser Dan Warren from Old Sulians, in the press box at the Rec, to see if Norton could secure a historic Cup double.
Welton secured the points they needed to gain promotion to the Western League Premier Division with a 3-1 win at Cheddar. Needing only a point Welton secured all three in dramatic fashion, reminiscent of how they've performed throughout this season. Welton dominated the game for long periods scoring two great goals and a penalty, yet they had to navigate a full hour of the match with a stand in goalkeeper after Andy King was taken to hospital with a serious facial injury, sustained in the first half. A game to remember to complete a season the Green Army will never forget.

Paulton Rovers aren't the only local footballers starting a Premier League campaign this season. Former Paulton striker, Ashley Barnes, is preparing for life in Englands top division with newly promoted Burnley, having gone close to achieving promotion from the Championship with Brighton and Hove Albion in recent seasons.
Ashley's first appearance on the Somer Valley Sports Show was back in January 2012, when he talked about his continued family links with his old club. Now a Premiership footballer, Ashley still looks out for the results of his old team mates and was particularly delighted for his former colleague, Nick Bunyard, the manager who masterminded Paulton's dramatic play off victory at Merthyr Town.
Ashley talked about the players he lined up with at Paulton, as well as the teams he'll now face in the Barclays Premier League, argued by many as the best in the world.

Paulton Rovers made history on Saturday August 9th, when they kick off the first Southern League Premier Division campaign, in the clubs history. I was reunited with Paulton's Press Officer, Tony Walsh, for our first League commentary since the triumph at Merthyr Town in May.

Paulton Rovers recent trip to Melksham Town pitted the old Master against his young apprentice. Current Paulton Manager, Nick Bunyard, played for Darren Perrin when he managed the Paulton side that gained promotion to the Southern League. Nick has since surpassed this feat, taking Paulton into the Southern League Premier Division for the first time in the Clubs history.
I managed to catch both managers together, at the conclusion of an enthralling pre-season friendly. Rovers ran out 2 nil winners, but Melksham could count themselves unlucky not to take a memorable victory, with an impressive second half display.
Paulton traveled to Melksham for their third pre-season friendly on the 2014/15 campaign. I made the short journey round the corner from my house to cover this match for Somer Valley FM, flanked by my wife, daughter and an entourage of in-laws and neighbours!

Midsomer Norton Target Shooting Club made history this year when they claimed Somerset Division 1 title for the first time in the Clubs history. The A Team triumphed in the winter league, which involves firing .22 caliber target rifles indoors and in the prone position.
Teams from across the county compete in a postal league, where cards at shot at each Clubs home range and collated by an independent County official.
The Clubs success has been made complete by A Team member, Dan Warren winning the Somerset Open competition, which will see him representing the County at the Champion of Champions event held at the National Championships in Bisley, later this year.

Larkhall Athletic completed a League and Cup double at the Hallen Centre on Sunday May 11th. Two first half goals from Jamie Lyons was enough to see off Western League 1st Division side Cribbs FC, as the Larks lifted the Les Phillips Cup for the first time in their history.

After the heroics of their mid-week visit to Tiverton, Paulton Rovers travelled to the Cigg-e Stadium for the Final of the Southern League Division 1 South & West Play-Offs. Hosts Merthyr had gone undefeated at home throughout the normal season and backed by crowd of more than two thousand, where strong favourites to clinch the last promotion place.
Following a ten minute delay caused by crowd congestion, I was joined in commentary box by Paulton Media Officer, Tony Walsh.
Following last nights dramatic play off semi final victory at Tiverton Town, I caught up with Paulton Rovers manager, Nick Bunyard to reflect on an epic performance. However, with the job only half done, I started by asking Nick how he intends to prepare for a difficult trip to Merthyr Town on Bank Holiday Monday.
Bath Rugby triumphed in their Amlin Challenge Cup semi-final, after a hard fought match against London Wasps. The victory was certainly one for the forwards, and none were happier than Leroy Houston. Bath's No.8 talked to me about the prospect of Bath's first Cup Final appearance of the season and a look ahead to Friday nights dress-rehearsal at the Rec, when Bath's Amlin opponents Northampton Saints visit for the final league match of the season.

Paulton Rovers travelled to Tiverton Town in the Calor Southern League Division One South & West play off semi final, winning 3-1 and finishing the match with 9 men. It has to be heard to be believed!
Paulton Rovers closed their Calor Southern League Division One South & West regular season campaign, with a trip to North Leigh, on April 26th. With one eye on next weeks Play Off semi final, the Paulton faithful could have been forgiven for thinking their trip to Oxfordshire was nothing more than a necessary evil. Yet, with a home tie in the Play Offs still a mathematical possibility, Paulton were playing for more than just pride.
Tony Walsh joined me at the picturesque Eynsham Hall Park Sports Ground, where Nick Bunyard had shuffled his pack and given youth a chance.
Sadly, our 1st half commentary never made it out of Oxfordshire, but with the score at nil all at half time you could be forgiven for thinking that you'd missed nothing. You'd be wrong! Paulton missed a penalty, whilst North Leigh crafted two chances across Paulton's open goal.
Special mention should be made to North Leigh's excellent hospitality and Paul Milsom's late cameo!
Melksham Town retained their Wiltshire County Senior Cup, eventually defeating Bradford Town in one of the most entertaining and intriguing Cup Finals its ever been my privileged to watch, let alone cover.
Self appointed underdogs, Melksham Town of the Western League Premier Division spent much of the game on the back foot, but never let their First Division opponents and League Champions, Bradford Town, get out of sight. Melksham twice pegged Bradford back to finish normal time at 2 all. Melksham took the lead for the first time in the first half of extra time, only to be taken to penalties by a last gasp Bradford equaliser.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man and after misses on both sides it was left to Melksham keeper, Tom Drewitt to make a name for himself, saving from Bradford Captain Tom Evans.
From Lowbourne to Bowerhill, they'll be dancing in the streets of Melksham tonight!
Midsomer Norton Rugby Club fought for their Tribute Western Counties North League future on Easter Bank Holiday Monday. Promoted only last season, Norton entertained Barton Hill at Norton Down in a must win game, needing a bonus point win, scoring at least four tries, to secure their league survival.

Bath's play-off ambitions are still very much in their own hands, as the Premiership season hots up to a thrilling climax.

The Miners have been in patchy form of late, as they look to secure the last few vital points that will ensure their Premier Division survival. Yesterday I spoke with Bath prop Nathan Catt about a tight game against Newcastle at the Rec. We also looked ahead to the West Country Derby away at Exeter on Saturday and the part the weather was likely to play.
Welton Rovers made the hour long trip to Wadworthshire to see if they could extend their good run of Western League form. In one of the few fixtures not called off in the morning, the Green Army came out in force to watch Welton take on a much improved Devizes Town side. However, despite passing an earlier pitch inspection, the referee called the game of at 3:20 pm, without a ball being kicked. Even a trip to the local builders merchants could get the game on, much to the disappointment of all concerned. With tempers running high, I turned to Bob Allard, the sober voice of reason, for his reflections on a bizarre turn of events.
Lloyd Edgell was formally announced as Radstock Town at the start of December, following a dreadful November for the Miners on and off the field.
Player walk outs and heavy defeats left Radstock fighting for their Western League Premier Division survival, yet Lloyd's first full month in charge turned around the ailing Clubs fortunes, registering 2 wins a draw and only one narrow defeat over the Christmas period.
Lloyd, a former soldier, has been associated with Radstock Town for 18 years, representing the Club at Under 18, reserve and first team level. At 25, Lloyd is one of the youngest managers in the Western League and whilst his committment to the cause cannot be questioned, he has no qualifications to be a coach.
The Somerset Football Association have confirmed that for a coach like Lloyd, who is working with an adult team, it is also possible to bypass the ‘Level 1’ qualification, which is aimed at coaches working with younger players and go straight onto the Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football.
The Level 2 course is a 75 hour course, requiring coaches to complete 12 sessions with their own team, produce session plans and complete an assessed 35 minute training session.The course will cost Radstock Town, a Charter Standard Club, £200, but I'm sure we can find someone to support Lloyd and sponsor the course fee.
January is a busy month of a Cup action for Bath. Saturdays 30 points to 13 victory away to Newport Gwent Dragons is quickly followed by the visit of Bordeaux Begles to the Rec on Thursday. Bath hooker Ross Batty talked to me about Bath's good Cup form, competition for first team places and his New Year battle with chocolate!

An excellent November for Bath was capped with a Derby win against West Country rivals Exeter Chiefs. Five wins from five left Bath third in the Premiership and represented real progress on their form from last season. I talked to Tom Heathcote about the Exeter game, as well as looking ahead to the Amlin Cup trip to Italy this weekend.
My first trip to Farleigh House in over a month and this week I got to speak to none other than Bath Rugby Head Coach, Gary Gold! We looked back on an impressive November for Bath and discussed what Sundays Cup win against local rivals Exeter, might mean for the Premiership clash at the end of the month.
A 75th minute goal from Valerijs Sabala was enough to give Latvia victory in this historic match against Yeovil at Huish Park.
Sabala's goal from a right wing cross was one of very few chances the visitors had in a match where the Glovers had by far the majority of chances but failed to convert. The match as a whole mirrored several of the home side's Championship defeats this season; more possession, more chances but ultimately nothing to show.
Town manager Gary Johnson, himself of course the Latvian manager for two years previously, was able to welcome back Wigan loan signing Frazer Fyvie and had a new face between the sticks too, keeper Stuart Taylor who arrived on a month's deal from Reading. In the Latvian side was Vitalijs Maksimenko, part of last season's playoff winning Yeovil lineup.
After surviving an early penalty shout when Artis Lazdins went down right on the edge of the box, Yeovil soon settled down and went close twice to opening the scoring. Joel Grant couldn't quite get on top of a Paddy Madden ball in and Joe Ralls cross shot narrowly missed the far post.
Played in a competitive spirit, the first half lacked any further scares for either keeper, with Taylor barely tested with anything harder than a back pass or two. At half time, Gary Johnson switched ten of the eleven players, just leaving centre half Liam Fontaine on for the second period.
The game immediately looked livelier with those ten fresh pairs of legs, Yeovil looking the more likely to break the deadlock. Sam Foley was at the heart of most attacks, creating a chance for Joey Jones who headed wide from a corner and Kieffer Moore who sliced a shot wide, although the striker was flagged for offside too.
Foley also tested Latvian gloveman Aleksandrs Kolinko early in the second period and both he and Kevin Dawson sent shots high over the bar during an extended spell of pressure.
Kolinko saved from Dawson and then watched as Liam Davis pulled an effort wide of goal but Latvia then against the run of play took the lead. A ball came over from the right and Sabala tucked the ball in at the far post.
Sub Daniils Turkovs shot wide on the counter attack two minutes later and the final chance of the game fell to Jones whose bullet header was cleared off the lines with four minutes remaining.

Two nil down from the 1st half and Radstock have a mountain to climb if they are to get anything against this well organised Odd Down side. But with an important FA Vase match to come at the weekend, will the home side take their eye of the ball?
The Miners travelled to high flying Odd Down on a chilly Tuesday night. Odd Down, unbeaten in 12 matches going into the game, got of to the perfect start, scoring in the first minute. Less than six and a half miles separates these two clubs, but the gap in terms of league positions is considerably greater.

Welton Rovers entertained Western League strugglers Keynsham Town at West Clewes on Saturday, October 19th. The Green Army cantered to a comfortable 3 nil win, but it could have been so many more. Welton chances were dampened by a first half downpour, whilst the second half saw a comedy of errors, including a missed penalty.
Individual scores of 100 or more are a relatively uncommon occurrence in club cricket so to reach 200 in a club game is some feat. Midsomer Norton CC now have two current players in this exclusive 200 club and they are brothers Chris and Nigel Tabb.
Chris Tabb notched up his first double-century for Midsomer Norton in the last week of August in a home fixture against Wiltshire side Nationwide House CC. His 153 ball innings of 201 not out included 26 fours and 4 sixes.
In reaching this milestone – his first double century – he matched the performance of brother Nigel Tabb in a 1988 fixture against Blagdon CC, again at Withies Lane. Nigel ended his innings on 205 not out. Nigel was at the wicket with Chris in his recent innings when the brothers shared a partnership of 133 runs for the second wicket.
Radstock Town came away from Huish Park with their heads held high, after a memorable night at the home of Championship side Yeovil Town. Yeovil used the Somerset Premier Cup match to give their first team players a run out in what has been a difficult start to the season.
Carl Crabtree was kept busy in the Radstock goal from the first whistle. Yeovil should have taken the lead after only 4 minutes when Luke Ingram managed to clear the ball of the line only for the follow up to ricochet of the bar. But it was Radstock who should have scored first on 14 minutes, when a long ball forward found the diminutive Mario Matteus in the Yeovil box, evading the Yeovil defence, only to miss a virtually open goal.
That was about as good as it got for the Miners. The inevitable happened after seventeen minutes and fifteen seconds when a quality corner was headed home by the giant Kieffer Moore.
The bombardment continued for the last 20 minutes of the first half, with Yeovil adding a further 3 goals. Four nil down at half time and the travelling Miners fans feared the worse for the second half.
Yeovil added a fifth shortly after the brake, but that severed only to galvanise the visitors. Radstock goal keeper, Carl Crabtree and captain Lloyd Edgell, himself a lifelong Yeovil fan, led a valiant rearguard action, the Radstock defence holding firm for a further 32 minutes.
Yeovil eventually scored their 6th goal on 82 minutes and were gifted a 7th following a questionable referring decision and a hotly disputed penalty. Eight nil it finished, but the Miners can return to Radstock with heads held high. Part timers against the pro's, David versus Goliath. A performance memorable for its commitment couldn't quite be classed as a pyrrhic victory, more a valiant defeat.
Bath's good start to the season continued with a third win from four matches, but their inability to add to their 33 points from the first half still suggests room for improvement. Guy Mercer scored a brace of tries and was upbeat about Bath's start to the season and their upcoming trip to Sale.
Yesterday I caught up with Toby Booth, 1st Team Coach, at the Bath Rugby Media Session. When I last spoke to Toby he talked to me about the "new" Bath way, a way that had been severely tested at Saracens on Sunday. We reflected on the lessons learnt from Bath's first defeat of the season and looked at how the new scrummaging laws are bedding in.
Paulton entertained Merthyr Town in this top of the table clash at Winterfield Road. Both sides finished in the Southern League Division 1 South & West play offs last season, so this match was always going to be a hotly contested affair. After a cagey 1st half, both teams through everything but the kitchen sink at each other in the 2nd half. Somerset Football Association held its annual ‘County Awards Evening’ on Thursday 11th July at Somerset County Cricket ground, Taunton.
The evening was an opportunity for Somerset FA to recognise and reward outstanding contribution and achievement to football from Schools, Clubs and Volunteers within Somerset over the last 12 months.
The last award of the evening was for Outstanding Contribution to Community Football, this was picked up by the outstanding Claire Burton (Purnell Sports / Midsomer North Youth & Mini League), Claire lives and breathes football and is an instrumental figure in local football.
