- Many dog owners say they want their dog's behaviours to change... but are we willing to change ourselves?
- In this episode, we explore a simple idea that has a huge impact on dog training: if nothing has changed, nothing will change. More often than not, lasting behaviour change starts with the owner, not the dog.
- We discuss how our daily habits, consistency, timing and expectations shape our dogs' behaviour, and why repeating the same actions while expecting different results only leads to frustration.
- Diving into the science of learning, looking at how operant conditioning creates the repetitions that eventually become classical conditioning—turning trained behaviours into lasting emotional associations and habits.
- If you're serious about creating long-term change in your dog, this episode will challenge you to first look at the other end of the leash.

- Panos sits down with renowned trainer Jay Jack for a direct and thought-provoking conversation about the craft of dog training and personal development.
- Jay breaks down his concept of “windows of opportunity” — explaining that most windows in life are natural… except for “work.” Work is not something that magically presents itself. It must be created, pursued, and stepped into deliberately.
- The conversation then shifts to one of the most important drivers of growth: mistakes. Rather than avoiding them, Jay explains how mistakes are essential for development. Panos and Jay unpack how trainers — and dog owners — can reconcile their errors, take ownership, and use those moments as fuel for long-term progress instead of shame or stagnation.

- Training your dog isn’t about flashy skills or perfect reps in perfect conditions — it’s about reliability in the real world.
- In this episode, we break down what proofing really means and why so many dog owners get stuck when behaviour “falls apart” outside the training session.
- We talk about why you started training in the first place, how your lifestyle should shape your dog’s training, and why rushing the process usually backfires.
- We cover the importance of developing your own communication with your dog, creating consistency across environments, and understanding that some behaviours aren’t “fixed” — they’re managed.
- Training, at its core, is about learning a shared language and culture with your dog, not blindly following rules forever.
- Learn the rules first… then earn the right to break them. This episode is a practical reminder that there’s no one right way — you need to find your way with your dog.

- Dan returns for round two, and this one goes deep.
In this episode, we unpack intrinsic motivation in dogs—from prey drive to play drive—and how those drives differ, overlap, and actually show up in real-world training. Not theory for theory’s sake, but how these concepts matter when you’re working dogs day in, day out.
- Dan shares lessons learned from years of working dogs, alongside his experience with reactivity in pet dogs. Watching dogs work provides perspective—how dogs think, act, and learn—and that perspective is often missing when people rely solely on what they see online.
- We also talk context. Techniques, clips, and hot takes on social media mean nothing without experience behind them. Keeping an open mind is easy to say, harder to do—especially when exposure is limited.

- Most dog owners walk their dogs every day… and still end up with pulling, reactivity, and chaos on the leash. Why is that?
- In this episode, Panos and Luke break down the 20/20/20 Rule — a simple, repeatable walking structure that balances discipline, freedom, and training.
- You’ll learn why the walk should be split into three clear phases:
• A structured loose leash walk to set the mental tone
• Free time with purpose — including real-world training
• A structured return to help your dog regulate and settle
- This episode explains how to stop turning walks into overstimulation sessions and start using them to build focus, reliability, and a calmer dog at home.
- If your dog “gets plenty of walks” but still behaves like they’ve had three coffees, this one’s for you.

- Others believe it could create unnecessary barriers and punish responsible dog owners.
- We weigh the pros and cons, consider examples from places where such systems exist, and ask what responsible ownership really looks like.

- Panos shares a recap of 2024, his favourite episodes of last year and what lessons he's learnt in his dog training experience.
- This week's topic was all about dog's being creatures of patterns and as a dog owner, the importance of acknowledging patterns in your dog's behaviour.
- Your patterns of behaviour influence your dog and now that we are back to the beginning of the year, after some time off, you may notice new or challenging behaviour in your dog.
- A dog can be predictable if you can understand their patterns via body language, situational awareness and what motivates the dog. It's easy only once you can be aware of it.

- We had the privilege to have a very interesting conversation with Gary about his 40 years of experience in the dog training industry and some fascinating stories that have come with it.This lead to a discussion of certain 'extremists' that threaten our industry on many levels, and you may find it surprising the conclusion Gaz has come to after all these years being a service to dogs and our community.
- Gaz Jackson has trained in excess of 20,000 dogs in obedience, protection, or detection, supplying canine and handler training to police, army, prisons, air force, and state and federal agencies internationally. - Gaz now works full time as an author and speaker around Australia and overseas and provides dog training private lessons, seminars and workshops.
- What’s most impressive about Gaz Jackson is the number of things he’s achieved through dog training:
- 1st Megafauna Fossil detection Dog
• 1st Bio Archaeology Dog
• 1st Quoll Detection Dog
• 1st and 2nd Koala Detection Dog
• Trained the world’s youngest Narcotic Dog at 11 weeks of age

- One of the most important concepts we try to help our dog training clients understand is that dogs will continue to display whatever behaviours that are rewarded.
-
This includes desirable and undesirable behaviours, and it seems that a lot of dog owners may not understand the ways in which they are accidentally or unintentionally rewarding (reinforcing) certain behaviours in their dogs...

- This week Brittany of "The Pet Girl" joined us via zoom, generously giving her time and expertise on the current state of prong collar bans in the state of Queensland Australia
- We also discussed Brittany's extensive past as a dog trainer, and how she is always on the search to further her own development as a dog industry professional
-
From Brittany's website:
-
"If you asked me 6 years ago what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, I had absolutely no idea; I just knew that animals HAD to be a part of it.
- As a long time dog owner, I had always taken a responsible approach to my dogs’ health and wellbeing, opting for a more natural approach to their lifestyle and more specifically their diets.
- I found that I was always asking questions beyond the norm and I quickly realised that a lot of the questions I was asking, nobody really knew the answers to. The more I researched and learnt, the more I wanted to share, and this is how The Pet Girl came about.
- My goal is to help pet parents be informed and smart about pet ownership and do the very best they can. I want to create a generation of pet parents that value having fit, healthy and confident pets that not only survive through life, but absolutely THRIVE.

- When it comes to skill development, it is a necessity to have momentum and a direction of what you are trying to achieve.
- Otherwise, habits and skills are seldom to be to be acquired.

- Sometimes we take on so much in our day-to-day life, and to make things worse, we suffer more in our head than we actually need to.
- In this week's episode, Panos comes back from a week out of Sydney to reflect on a few things: how stress affects learning, teaching, and relationships.
- To accept your current situation, whatever it be, your dog's behaviour, pressures of work, feeling overwhelmed with life's demands, etc.
- Once you see it for what it is, make plans moving forward, and over time, learn to read these patterns and be proactive.
-
You are only best for others when you, yourself is at your best, this applies to your relationship and training with your dog and, of course many other factors to other areas of your life.

This week Panos and Luke answer and discuss questions from Saharai, who works at Napa County Animal Shelter and Adoption Centre, in California, USA.
-
The shelter receives all dogs of any calibre. There are many variables making that job difficult on many levels. Not only for caring, feeding and exercising them, but adopting a behavioural training system to help the dogs that need it the most unfortunately can be the most difficult yet critical for some dogs' adoptability.
-
Saharai sent in many questions. These regard how dog behaviour and training practices in such a stressful, high-demand and low-funded environments like shelters can be achievable and replicable.
-
Panos has had some experience in working day-to-day duties in an animal shelter for multiple years along with training volunteers, staff and the dogs of the shelter, which helped him to answer Saharai's questions.
-
Saharai shares some great content on Instagram of the cool things she does at the shelter. These include training, rehabilitation, enrichment, and showing her raw passion. Check her out on Insta at www.instagram.com/_wolfmother_

Today's Q&A comes in from another listener, Sarvesh - all the way from India.
He has a few questions about aggression cases in some dogs he's working with that likes to get another perspective on.
Remember it is difficult to give specific advice about aggression without seeing the dog and their owners in person.
Panos gives advice general in nature and not too specific as he understands it can be a dangerous thing to be absolute about giving guidance as it can result in a dangerous outcome.
Make sure you listen right to the end as Panos adds an extra thought that is most important for all new trainers to hear.

What is impulse control?
Today's short episode is a brief explanation, example and guide on how to develop impulse control in our dogs.
Panos believes impulse control is a life skill for both dogs and humans and must be developed and maintained to get the most out of our dogs especially while they interact with the world around them.
It compliments obedience training and behavioural issues and is one of those foundational techniques that should be a part of your dog training toolbox.

Roger, an avid listener of our podcast, has sent in a question following on from EP12- Why do we have dogs in our lives?
Panos goes into some detail about what to consider when giving advice on why people should train their dog, how they should train their dog and how to make them take it seriously.
This can be a hard task, the best answer of which Roger had already stated is, be a good role model, practice what you preach and help inspire others to take on the task of being the best person for their dog.

Happy New Year to all our listeners!
Panos reflects on his lessons of the year. It has been a wild year personally, professionally and globally.
The reason why Panos has dogs and dedicates himself to dog training is that dogs complement our lives, and should not complicate them.
He wants owners to learn from their dogs just as much as we teach them.
Remain disciplined, maintain what we already have before adding more, and having structure but switching up routines.

This question comes from our listener Paul, who's wondering how small dog syndrome works and if it's real.
Panos explains his thoughts on the topic and what it means when a small dog is reactive to everything around them.
Is it their ego, because they think they are bigger than what they actually are? Or are they fearful which results in the barking, lunging and snapping?

Panos had the opportunity to sit with Alex Edwards and discuss topics from Alex's socialisation classes, stories of his 5 dogs, how Covid has affected our dogs, Alex's journey abroad learning from some of the world's top dog trainers and much more.
Alex owns and runs Refine Your Canine Dog Training. He is a Melbourne based dog trainer with over 7 years experience.
Alex is very passionate about dogs and effective dog training. Proper dog training creates a special bond between the owner and the dog that enhances the experience of dog ownership. Alex has a special natural ability with dogs that can only come from a lifetime of dog ownership and a love of dogs.
Alex is a firm believer that training your dog should be fun and challenging. He believes that the dog should want to come back every time. The dog should feel that it has learned something, achieved something and also enjoyed the day. Dogs that train with Alex are testimony to this, many of them getting very excited when they know they are going to doggy school.
Alex specialises in time efficient dog training, focusing on getting the best results in the shortest time. So he uses time proven methods but leaves plenty of room for fun and innovation.
He is always looking for new ways of improving the experience and adding to the enjoyment of training sessions for both owner and for the dog. He has dog training programs for basic to advanced dogs, from puppies to adult.

This week, Panos answers a question from Amanda: "How do I encourage my husband to build a better relationship with our dog? Our dog is difficult to walk as he's reactive to other dogs and needs to be carefully managed. This is not what we wanted when we adopted him but we took a chance and this is what we have."
This is a very common and interesting topic that can be relatable to many owners, particularly of rescue dogs. Try these tips out and let us know if it worked for you.

Brent Dry is passionate about working with people to get the best out of their dog in whatever they are working on. Teaching clients how their dogs learn and why they are behaving in a particular manner is a role that he truly enjoys.
When working with clients, Brent likes to empower them with the knowledge of how their dogs perceive their world.
Brent loves the people he's in contact with everyday through his business and he aims to give them everything he can each time they are in a class. I also love mentoring students who are studying to become dog trainers themselves. Giving back to these keen people gives him so much satisfaction.
Professionally training since 2008, Brent and his wife Cat have had many dogs including Rottweiler’s, and they now have a Belgian Malinois called Zia. They love learning new techniques to train and different ways to motivate dogs.
You can find The K9 Company at www.thek9company.com.au where you'll also find Brent's new video course - great for remote learning during Covid-19.

The National Dog Trainers Federation (NDTF) Certificate 3 in Dog Behaviour & Training is Australia’s only government-approved and nationally recognised professional dog trainer certificate.
It is Australia’s longest running and most comprehensive dog trainer certification program. The course is also a nationally recognised qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
The NDTF’s professional dog training courses combine theoretical canine behavioural education with an industry leading ‘hands on’ component.
Unlike some other courses, the NDTF has cultivated a team featuring a wide variety of experts from various specialist dog training and canine behaviour-related backgrounds.
Most importantly the NDTF does not force its students to take on any particular style of training; there is no ideology to be found here. We would encourage you to be very careful when anyone tries to tell you how you "MUST" conduct yourself, or impose their ideology on you. That advice applies to dog training and beyond!

Panos explains the difference between a formal command (e.g. COME) and informal command (e.g. LET'S GO). We all wish to have clear communication with our dogs - put some of this advice into practice and see how you go.

"Good management" is a term you may have heard many times throughout our podcast episodes. It truly is the foundation upon which your dog's training must be built. When we build a house on an unsteady foundation of sand, we should expect to suffer the consequences. Dogs are no different.
A dog whose foundations are built on solid bedrock will have a happy and fulfilling life as a member of its family.

This week we discuss how one bad experience for your dog can throw things off - even to the best of us. It's called life. Being an experienced dog trainer doesn't preclude you from ending up in unforeseen circumstances.
Panos talks about a recent incident where a dog attacked Nuki & Spades due to the poor management of the attacking dog's owners. We are always going on about good management! But you can't rely on management when it comes to other dog owners.
The consequences of such incidents are referred to as single-event learning in dog training. This can refer to both good and bad experiences. Having built a solid training foundation helps them bounce back from potentially long-lasting negative effects.
We cover the importance of having a plan for desensitisation and how to move forward when the sh*t hits the fan!

Today's question comes from zazenhub on Instagram, who's asking for ways to stop their dog begging and stealing food at dinner time.
Panos addresses the 3 D's of a durational command ("Bed") as well as the power of good management. Most unwanted behaviour in the home is a symptom of lack of structure. Teach your dog what you want him to do, set some consistent rules, and always be patient.

Stress and burnout is rampant within the canine industry. Perhaps it's a combination of a highly emotionally charged topic (trainers are rightly very passionate about their clients and animals), along with the fact that most dog trainers are "lone wolf" operators - out on their own, without "colleagues" in the usual sense.
The irony here is many people enter the dog industry from a love of nature and animals, and yet they end up spending a lot of time away from nature, in the digital world, trying to run a modern business.
Panos recorded this episode from the beautiful Turon Gates property in rural NSW and muses on the importance of recharging batteries in nature, and how you might go about this.

This week we were privileged to sit down with Pat Stuart of The Canine Paradigm, which means we've now interviewed both of The Canine Paradigm lads! Pat is our first in-studio guest on Life With Your Dog.
Pat's introduction to dog training was a baptism by fire when he brought an adult Belgian Malinois into his home that required way more skill to own and train than he had ever expected, and so began his obsession with dog training and behaviour.
In 2015, Pat took the plunge and began training dogs full time after a more than 12-year career in Army Special Forces.
He has been lucky enough to be mentored and coached by some of Australia and the world’s best dog trainers. Most notably Michael and Bart Bellon who Pat has been studying under for several years, learning their NePoPo® system.
Pat is a certified NePoPo® instructor as well as an active competitor in PSA, a certified decoy and the PSA Assistant Regional Director for Australia.
Pat believes his greatest strength comes in educating people, and he has a passion for passing on knowledge in a way people can go out and implement immediately.

Today's episode covers 2 topics. Walking your puppy can be a challenge, and learning some basics can really help. Panos doesn't teach 'loose lead' walking for puppies under 6 months old, but building a foundation to help for those future times really makes a difference!
If you are thinking of it, or already own 2 puppies from the same litter, Panos & Luke discuss the importance of following guidelines to prevent future issues. The 2 main issues here (but not limited to these) are separation anxiety and aggression problems. Enjoy this Puppy 101 episode - any questions hit us up on our different platforms.

Dogs barking at the TV can be a fairly common problem. Interestingly, it is more prevalent with modern TVs as the old-style TVs (before LCDs) were very hard for dogs to actually see the TV picture.
Panos goes through how to use COUNTER-CONDITIONING and DESENSITISATION to address this issue. As always, successful dog training comes down to GOOD MANAGEMENT! Set yourself and your dog up for success, not problems.

Taking a break from our usual Q&A episode, this week Panos sits down by himself to mull over what dogs have taught him in his many years of working alongside these majestic creatures. In these uncertain times that bring increased anxiety, dogs have the ability to take us out of our HEADS and bring us more into our BODIES. Anxiety is a fear of the unknown FUTURE - while dogs can bring us into the PRESENT!
We teach dogs to live in our society, while our dogs teach us to live in the now. Being present is a side effect to this understanding. Keeping up with routine with our dogs even though you can slip out of yours. If you have training goals with your dog, the ritual of training and practice is further strengthening your discipline with a new skill, project or goals of our own. Dogs are optimistic, and this encourages us to be more positive even when we feel down and out.

This episode comes to you from Coronavirus quarantine! Luke has been unwell so we took precautions and recorded this remotely over the internet.
"Punishment" can be a highly controversial topic within the dog training industry. There can be serious animosity between the balanced and force-free communities. However the smart approach is to realise that both can learn from one another and meet in the middle.
Many terms can be misconstrued, but even putting a dog in "time out" or withholding pats counts as punishment! Many people who claim to never use punishment are very likely using it without acknowledging this...
Panos goes through many different examples and scenarios, drawing on his personal experiences of dog training to navigate this controversial but NECESSARY topic for your dog's long term wellbeing.

In these times of uncertainty and anxiety, some are forced into lockdown, some are home for self isolation quarantine & others are having to work from home.
What does this mean for our dogs? Panos talks about opportunities for training, exercise and not getting distracted by your dog while working from home.
Maintain structure, but switch up the routine as much as possible. See the opportunities rather than the negatives in this pandemic.
We hope and pray that you and your family are doing ok in the trying times. Our best survival technique is staying happy, healthy and strong, learn from our dogs, be in the present moment and look after family and community.

This week we discuss the benefits of play, and different styles of play with dogs.
A game of tug or fetch can be used to reward behaviours in your training. It becomes a relationship-building exercise to help strengthen your bond.
Play also provides the opportunity to teach dogs to follow commands in high states of arousal, which can improve impulse control.

We've all heard this saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. It's often used in reference to people not wanting to, or not feeling able to, learn new things in life. So how true is it in reference to dogs? Panos goes through this question with some real life examples of dogs he's had experience with in the past!

When training your dog there are a huge number of commands that you could eventually teach to them. Some are more about safety, and then others are more about "tricks" or showing off the animal's skills. However few commands are as important as the three essential commands covered in this episode.

This week's question from our listener Luke is about ensuring that family & friends do not inadvertently reinforce the wrong behaviours in your new puppy. Remember, the first 17 weeks are a CRUCIAL learning & socialisation period for your puppy - meaning any experiences will have a permanent effect on the dog. Panos goes through some tips to ensure these are positive experiences, while also addressing the 'embarrassment' you may feel from having to be strict with your family and friends.

It's that time of the year for family getaways, and if your dog can't join in, a friend may have volunteered to look after the pooch.
- Things to consider before taking on the responsibility are:
- Making sure the dog gets along with the other dogs it's starting with or is good with the rest of the family.
- That there is adequate space for the dog or extra dogs and the property is secure.
- Regular exercise & training.
- Does the dog have separation anxiety/distress?
- Feeding guidelines.
- Does the dog have medical issues or requires meds?
- Firework phobia?
- Panos goes through these topics, and how it is important to consider them before either taking on a friend's dog or letting a friend look after your dog.

Dog parks seem to attract a lot of dog owners for the simple reason that most dogs have a really fun time playing with other dogs. Even though this is true, there are many issues that are created at dog parks.
The dog park could potentially be a dangerous place. Not all dogs are social in the way we would expect, which can lead to your dog having a really bad experience. Panos has trained over 1000 dogs in his career, and a big percentage of dogs he sees that are dog aggressive/reactive are a result of a bad experience at the dog park.
Also it can be a place where your dog learns to ignore you and place a higher value in other dogs, which isn't the worst thing, but can potentially affect your training. This doesn't mean all dog parks are bad or that your dog is guaranteed a bad experience but this episode is to share some light on the topic.
To dog park or not to dog park is up to you to decide, but make sure you make a well informed decision before entering.

One of the most important tools you have in managing and training your dog is the walk. We discuss why a structured walk of rules and boundaries - along with play and engagement training - is important.
Panos explains how he walks his own dogs and what he teaches to his clients so that the dogs are being fulfilled - mentally and physically - on the walk.
The walk should be an enjoyable time for both sides of the lead. - Hint: It may not be what you'd previously thought. Often we assume that "training" is limited to when the dog trainer shows up, but it's far more encompassing.
- *Understanding dog body language, basic understanding of teaching the main commands, regular exercise and mental stimulation.
- *Learn what dogs need to live and thrive in our world, keep rituals and be consistent with all practices.
- *Training is more than merely teaching commands - it is about enriching their needs on many levels and educating yourself accordingly.Thank you for listening, and please enjoy the show! In our first episode of Life With Your Dog, we take the time and opportunity to introduce ourselves.
Panos is the owner of Nooch's Pooches, based in Sydney. He has been specialising in dog behaviour and training for over 10 years. Panos talks about what got him into dog training and the journey it has taken him on.
Luke is fascinated by how dogs learn and how they positively affect our lives. Together with his mum, he also hosts the "Our Human Condition" podcast that focuses on "How can we live a life that transcends the challenges everyone faces?".
Panos was originally a guest on their podcast, before he and Luke decided to start Life With Your Dog together!
This is the beginning of a new journey. In this episode we discuss a general outline of what is to come in later episodes. Each future episode will centre around a theme connected to dog training and behavioural theory.
