What Happened to Doc Schultz?
In Sept 2017, USAF test pilot Lt.Col. Eric "Doc" Schultz was killed flying a classified type from Area 51.
The Air Force refused to release any details of the accident and has since returned "no records found" to freedom of information act requests.
In the five years that have elapsed, Schultz' good name has been tarnished by the insinuation that he exceeded his own capabilities or those of the aircraft he was flying.
For the first time, 10 Percent True sets the record straight and reveals the truth behind his tragic loss.

We started this conversation expecting to discuss the process of going from back- to front-seat in the F-15E, but ended up discussing a range of topics, from the acquisition processes of new fighters, to China.
We'll get back to talking F-15E in Part 4.

Hello everyone, welcome back to 10 Percent True
This interview is one of two special interviews I conducted to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Operation Desert Storm / Op Granby, better known as the First Gulf War.
In this, the first part of the first interview, Adam Robinson, a Royal Air Force Tornado Navigator talks about flying the Tornado and his squadron’s preparations leading up to war.
In Part 2, he’ll describe his experiences under fire, to include attacking an airfield on the very first night of the war.
Both parts were recorded back in September 2000, so that should explain some of the references Adam makes to dates and anniversaries.
Adam, thanks so much for sharing your experiences – it’s an important oral history and I am so grateful that you agreed to sit down and talk.
FYI, my second interview is with Rick “Kluso” Tollini, who was also airborne that first night of the war, lead the first fighter sweep in Iraq.
Two days later and Kluso would shoot down a MiG-25.
To hear his story, and to make sure you get notified that Part 2 of Adam’s interview is available, please subscribe.
Oh, and feel free to like and share.
Enjoy.

Hi Everybody
After a short break, I’m pleased to say once again: Welcome back to 10 percent true!

Speaking of which, my latest guest is Sqn Ldr (ret.) Chris “Toppo” Topham, a retired RAF fighter pilot and someone whose name any Mildenhall Air Fete officiando will recognise as the the pilot who, in 199s, brought the F-117 stealth fighter over to the UK for the first time.
My interview with Toppo is divided into multiple parts, starting with his RAF career flying Jaguars, and concluding with a detailed discussion of his exchange tour flying the Stealth Fighter, and an attack pilot’s assessment of the enigmatic jet.
I started by asking Toppo how he’d got into the flying business.
Enjoy

In March 1982, Argentinian forces landed on a set of tiny islands in the South Atlantic. These islands were known to the British as the Falklands, and to the Argentinians as Las Malvinas, and ownership over them remains contested to this day.
Britain’s Prime Minister responded without equivocation, and dispatched a task force of ships, aircraft and combat forces with the objective of retaking the islands.
Through the month of March, the task force sailed south. One of those onboard was Royal Air Force fighter pilot, Dave “Mog” Morgan, then on exchange with the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm, flying the Hawker Siddley Sea Harrier.
Morgan would help lead the planning of the first combat mission undertaken by the Sea Harriers, and would end the war having shot down four Argentine aircraft.
In this, the third and final interviews with Mog, he describes his air-to-air kills and the post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that affected him so greatly afterwards.

Welcome to this special 10 percent true broadcast commemorating the 34th anniversary of the so-called raid on Libya – a retaliatory, but limited strike, on key targets in Libya designed to show then-leader of Libya, Col Gadaffi, that President Reagan would not put up with state sponsored terrorism.
The raid was a multi service affair that involved air and sea elements provided by the US Air Force and US Navy.
This short episode focuses on the experiences of on of the Air Force pilots who took part in the raid, and it not intended to be a documentary of any description. Rather, it is intended provide an extremely rare first-hand retelling of the raid, spoken by someone who was there.
This is rare – it may even be the first time that the story has been broadcast using the voice of one of the Air Force participants – because all of the Air Force participants decided to remain anonymous after the event. They may have told friends and family, but they have never gone public.
The man I interviewed was the pilot of F-111F call sign Puffy 12. He told me that I could reveal his identity if I wished. However, I have chosen not to. The act of going public must be his to take, not mine.
The Air Force portion of the raid, which launched from four RAF Stations in the UK on 14 April 1986, was called Operation El Dorado Canyon. The first bombs were dropped at 0200 hours Libyan time on 15 April, and the mission became, at that time, the longest combat mission in history.
El Dorado Canyon involved F-111F precision bombers from the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath; EF-111A Raven tactical jamming aircraft from 20th FTW at RAF Upper Heyford; and KC-10 and KC-135 refuellers, which launched from RAF Fairford and RAF Mildenhall.
The F-111Fs were to fly against three target sets, while US Navy strike fighters protected against SAMs and MiGs.
Militarily, the mission was a success – the Libyans lost many MiGs and major threat radars – even if the F-111s enjoyed only mixed success.
However, one F-111 failed to return – the two-man crew of KARMA 52 drowned when their aircraft impacted the water in the Gulf of Sidra. The pilot, Major Fernando Ribas, was repatriated in 1989, but the body of the Weapons Systems Officer, Capt Paul Lorence, was never found.
Fernando was my neighbour and something of a boyhood hero. Many times, he had taken me on base to see the 1-11s and he was always kind and patient.
One day, I hope to write the definitive book about the raid to properly honor Fernando and Paul’s sacrifice. Until then, rare and all-too-short glimpses into the raid like that kindly given by Puffy 12 will have to do…
I started the interview by asking about his Air Force career prior to the raid…

Rear Admiral (ret.) Jim "Rookie" Robb flew F-14s in the US Navy for 25 years, accumulating 4,000 hours on type in the process.
This is the second part of a two-part 10 Percent True interview, in which Robb discusses attending TOPGUN as a student, instructor and Commanding Officer, and reflects on the air combat manoeuvring characteristics of the F-14. He also sheds light on some of the analytical thought process behind comparing fighter performance.
You can see Robb at TOPGUN as a student in the following film, but these guys wanted me to pay $25 per second to put it in my video, and that's just greedy. So, take a look for free when you're done watching my video! https://youtu.be/r0wXvxXQ_RQ?t=172
Robb flew an exchange tour with the US Air Force's 4477th TES, Red Eagles, and commanded the Navy component responsible for flying CONSTANT PEG sorties.
His experiences as a student flying against America's MiGs were captured on the opening pages of my book, "Red Eagles: America's Secret MiGs": https://www.amazon.com/Red-Eagles-Americas-Secret-MiGs-ebook/dp/B01DPPTRD2/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

Rear Admiral (ret.) Jim "Rookie" Robb flew F-14s in the US Navy for 25 years, accumulating 4,000 hours on type in the process.
He was the first pilot to go straight to the F-14 from flight school, and was in the first F-14 class to go through Top Gun. He later returned as an instructor, and then again as CO of the prestigious and world-famous unit.

Dave was featured extensively in the BBC's excellent series, Test Pilot, from the mid-1980s. Today, he refers to his onscreen presence as "my dark-haired, mustachioed younger brother!", and you you can catch the entire series here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFfWqd9p33k
