Ever wanted to get a tan? That’s probably all of us at some point. We’re all probably aware of the health risks of staying too long in the sun too. So, many people resort to tanning beds (AKA “the safer option”). Newsflash: they’re not. Tanning beds are – and will never be – safe OR safer than the sun.

Which is why today, in dedication to Skin Cancer Awareness Month, I’ll share with you in detail how tanning beds affect our skin and overall health.

IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT:

  • The hidden risks of indoor tanning
  • How you can get tanned WITHOUT the exponential health risks

Caught early, skin cancer is highly treatable. This is why – as a dermatologist – I want you to understand how to monitor changes that might occur on your skin. Of course, prevention (AKA proper sunscreen and sun-protective clothing application) is better than cure. Despite our best efforts, however, prevention isn’t 100% guaranteed.

So, as part of my series for Skin Cancer Awareness month, let’s dive into the visual clues we need to look out for (with the 3 most common types of skin cancer) and how to prevent precancerous growth from fully developing into skin cancer.

IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT:

  • When to go to your Dermatologist for a skin evaluation
  • How skin cancer starts and progresses – AND how it can be treated
  • Risk factors associated with skin cancer

If you’re wearing sunscreen every day (which I’m sure you do, Superwoman!), then you’re already following the number-one rule for sun protection. The 2nd rule – proper re-application – is just as important, however. See, friction, heat, sweat, and other environmental factors remove sunscreen off of our skin. In fact, it gets removed every 2 hours more or less. And so does your sun protection. With that, as an introduction for Skin Cancer Awareness Month, I’ll teach you how to reapply your sunscreen with success every day. Sun protection may never be perfect 24/7 but every minute matters.

IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT:

  • Methods for making sunscreen re-application easier
  • Sunscreen reapplication methods for various situations
  • Sunscreen products that are perfect for helping you re-apply sunscreen on-the-go

Did-you-know that most people only apply half of the sunscreen amount they need? Yikes! On top of not reapplying sunscreen, many don’t even apply the right amount. This gives us a picture of how much (or how little) sun protection many people actually get.

People forget that as long as you’re exposed to UV rays, your skin can get sun damaged. Which is why today, I’ll dive into how you can increase sunscreen efficacy and better protect your skin from sun damage.

IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT:

  • Exactly how much sunscreen you need to apply, in various situations
  • Why re-applying your sunscreen (every 2 hours, ideally) should be the standard
  • Tips on choosing the right sunscreen and keeping your skin as safe as possible from the sun’s oxidative effects

On a scale of 1-10, how important is cleansing for you? My beauty, you know I’m a generally flexible person (I recommend both medical-grade and budget-friendly drugstore products, after all!) This episode today is for you if you want to learn how a woman who grew up with no medical professionals in her family, turned out to become a physician assistant turned entrepreneur with a dream and passion for professional white coat innovation.

Lara Francisco PA-C is a female clinician-turned-entrepreneur who worked as an Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant for over a decade before she made history by creating the first ever lab coat for women. She used this experience to become the founder of Medelita, a medical uniform company with the mission to create exceptional medical apparel that meets the specific needs of her colleagues in medicine. In the years since then, Lara has grown Medelita to become the industry leader in tailored lab coats and scrubs built for performance, functionality, and style.

Get ready to learn about this incredible woman’s inspiring story of turning pain into purpose. My guest today, Jessica Bachus, discusses how she was able to turn a difficult life situation into impacting many children’s lives.

Dolls for Daughters® was founded in 2007 after Jessica Bachus’ daughter Kenzi was stillborn at 24 weeks. Overcome with grief, she felt compelled to channel her emotions into something that would honor Kenzi’s memory. With this notion, Dolls for Daughters® was created so that Jessica and her family could provide dolls to young girls at Christmastime who would otherwise go without. Jessica collected over 150 dolls the first year. Since then Dolls for Daughters® has come a long way. In 2017 Dolls for Daughters® provided toys and more to 11,512 children in the state of Colorado. Since 2007 more than 47,200 children in Colorado have been given toys and more from this program. In June 2018 Dolls for Daughters® & Kenzi’s Kidz became Kenzi’s Causes. This change was made to encompass their vision for the future and the addition of other programs that impact low-income children in Colorado.

Jessica has a servant heart and this episode will leave you with inspiration to give back to your community.
