What does the future of work and learning look like?
What do you need to know to prepare?

According to Dr. Michelle Weise, “for the future of work, we are all going to have to be very skilled problem solvers and system thinkers” and “that really does require a different approach on the part of higher-ed institutions in cultivating those kinds of learners.”

Michelle’s work focuses on the bottom 25% of income earners and what needs to change to help them to overcome barriers that prevent them from achieving academic and career success. One of the largest barriers Michelle describes is solving for time and lack of funds.

We talk about the role of A.I's role:

  • Helping to bridge the gap for employers to understand if a potential employee has the skill set they need.
  • Helping employees to feel confident that the education or training that they are pursuing will lead to work.

Right now, we are teaching in silos. Things will need to become more interdisciplinary. Michelle provides examples of organizations that are doing it well.

If you are average, you will change jobs like 14 times.

Technical skill will get you that first job. But those who pivot, advance, and move into leadership positions are more likely to have… a strong foundation in the humanities. Wow. But it is STEM studies that have higher perceived value.

Lecturers Molly Campbell and Krista Jackman think the humanities have a PR problem. “People think, ‘Oh, that career path doesn’t have one particular outcome.’ People are saying that like that’s a flaw when it’s actually the whole point, to prepare you for a wide variety of careers.”

In response, they pitched the Mellon Foundation. Now, they elevate the impact of the humanities in their community and have “very fuuuuuuull calendars.” Their six HUGEmanities initiatives are changing the way people see, and assign value to, the liberal arts.

  • English, psychology, history, art history, the classics, philosophy, theology, anthropology or theatre majors
  • Someone in sales

After listening to this podcast, Academic and Career Advising Services can help you explore colleges like the University of New Hampshire or help you get the most from your liberal arts degree, just like Molly and Krista.

WARNING: This is not your parent’s career advice. This is Gen Z-er, Justin Nguyen’s, careers-for-peers approach that has 18, 19 and 20-year old's binge-listening his podcast and contributing crowdsourced, real-time data for young job hunters.

He leads from experience. After college-age, Justin sent out a fruitless pile of internship applications, he discovered, over a dish of ice cream, that the real path to Fortune 500 internships is networking. Then he landed three of them.

While prestigious internships look amazing on a LinkedIn profile, sleepy data points alone do not produce job offers. Justin recommends something else, something much easier, to add to LinkedIn that really opens the doors of career opportunity.

Justin is the founder of GetChoGrindUp, a movement to help students navigate their way through college. He is also the host of an iTunes top 100 podcast, Declassified College Podcast (on Apple).

In today's "Monday Mashup," Meg and Bobbie discuss their recent experience of presenting a 75 minute workshop to the Maine Career Development Association, on Podcasting and YouTube as a Career Development and Job Seeking Tool. Bobbie & Meg really enjoyed the experience and of course it wasn't without its mishaps which we discuss in this podcast. The presentation was a part of the MCDA's bi-Annual State Conference. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, the MCDA had to shift the conference to a Zoom format (which is actually working out really well). FYI, for anyone working in the career advising field, there are more presentations coming up if anyone wants to join the MCDA and check them out! It is only $20/year to join and all are welcome.

Bobbie & Meg want to thank the MCDA. They were so honored and excited to be a part of this program. They especially want to thank Nicole Lazure and Peter Osborne who were both a huge source of support throughout the process.

Hoping to become a school superintendent? Currently teaching, but looking to move into a role in administration? Want ideas on how to better serve the youth in your community?

Today's podcast is with Sue Austin, assistant superintendent at MSAD 60. Sue started her career working as an education tech at the Odyssey House, moved into teaching which eventually led to her current position. She tells our listeners just how she did that and offers tips for anyone out there that has the same goal.

Sue is also the Director of The Ryan Home Project which works to help house displaced teens in her district. She talks about why she and others started this project and how she hopes it can become a model for other districts to implement as the number of teens without a place to sleep each night is alarming.

Sue has always loved horses and she turned that love several years ago into a business, Lucky Clover Stables, where she boards, gives lessons, puts on shows and provides summer camps. She talks about her business and how she really would like to move into using her horses for therapy as the healing benefits horses can have on people are amazing.

We could not miss talking to Sue about her family business, Shain's of Maine Ice Cream. Anyone familiar with this brand can tell you how amazing it is!

Clearly, Sue has a lot going on, but once you meet her, you can understand how she does it...she is compassionate, smart, seemingly has endless energy and mostly, she just loves what she does and it comes through in her words and actions. Her community is lucky to have her!

No matter what you career interests may be, it is always great to listen to someone so inspiring. Enjoy!

We’re so proud to introduce today’s guest, Robin Mamlet, Managing Partner and practice leader of the Executive Search Firm, Witt/Kieffer . What initially caught our eye about Robin, was the amazing book that she and Christine Vanvevelde co-authored, College Admission from Application to Acceptance, Step by Step. We read the book and loved it and thought Robin would be an excellent resource for all of our listeners.

When Robin wrote the book, she had years of experience in admissions, beginning at her alma mater, Occidental College, then moving on to Sarah Lawrence College, The Lawrenceville School, Swarthmore, and finally atStanford University where she was the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid.

With all this amazing experience in education under her belt, she stepped into her current role where she directs search assignments for Presidents, Provosts, Vice-Presidents and Deans for the Witt/Kieffer’s most valued clients.

In today’s podcast she shares some great tips on the college admissions process, the changing landscape of college and universities across the nation, and what is required of leaders to bring educational institutions into the future.
