In this episode of The Bankers’ Bookshel, host Paolo Sironi speaks with Dr. Jobst Landgrebe and Professor Barry Smith about their book, “Why Machines Will Never Rule the World: Artificial Intelligence without Fear”. The guests argue that artificial intelligence (AI) cannot achieve true intelligence or consciousness due to fundamental mathematical and philosophical limitations. Dr. Landgrebe explains that AI, including models like ChatGPT, is unable to solve novel problems independently, as it relies on patterns from pre-existing data. Professor Smith adds that human intelligence involves both “knowing how” and “knowing that,” which AI lacks. They assert that AI’s current capabilities are limited to specific tasks and cannot replicate the complexity of human thought or active perception. The authors emphasize the importance of understanding AI’s limitations to prevent misuse and manage expectations. They encourage a realistic view of AI, focusing on its role as a tool rather than a threat. The episode challenges the hype around artificial general intelligence, advocating for a practical and informed approach to AI development and deployment.
Dr. Jobst Landgrebe – Chief Technology Strategist, Indivumed Therapeutics
Dr. Jobst Landgrebe obtained his MD/PhD in cell biology in 1998. He is a licensed physician and studied medicine, biochemistry and mathematics. He works as head of R&D in a cancer research biotech company based in Hamburg. His current research interests are theory of science (for which he is a visiting professor at the University of Italian Switzerland) and biomedical/biomathematical cancer research.
Barry Smith – Professor of Philosophy, Computer Science, and Biomedical Informatics, University of Buffalo
Barry Smith is one of the world’s most widely cited contemporary philosophers, known especially for his application of ideas derived from logic and ontology to the solution of problems in domains outside philosophy, including economics, biology and medicine. Most recently he has been working on extending this approach to the military and intelligence domains, where his proposals have been adopted as baseline standards by the US Department of Defense and by the US Intelligence Community.
On the book:
The main thesis of Why Machines Will Never Rule the World (Routledge 2023)’s main thesis is that so-called ‘Artificial General Intelligence’ – an AI with the level of intelligence achieved by human beings – is for mathematical reasons impossible. This means that many assumptions surrounding current AI, including assumptions concerning the future takeover of the planet by autonomous robots, are founded on hype.

In this episode of ConQuest, host Roberto Capodieci engages in a thought-provoking conversation with Trilogy Media’s Ashton Bingham and Art Kulik about Scambait Networks. We get a glimpse of their inception as a duo, and discuss their fascinating work with institutions and the dynamics of their community in harnessing crowdfunding campaigns to support scam victims, showcasing the tremendous power of collective goodwill. However, beneath the surface, Scambait Networks have a darker side. Mob-like networks of scammers can exploit their employees, revealing complex power dynamics and ethical dilemmas.
This discussion underscores the dual nature of these networks, where the pursuit of good in combating scams and helping victims coexists with the potential for exploitation and unethical behavior.

June came and went bringing with it some pretty spectacular noteworthy news, that our show is ready to comment!Matteo Rizzi invited previous #NFF host himself Ali Paterson, and got Darren Franks to connect from Cape Town to help us with a more global perspective. Klarna's new deal valuing brought up some questions on the company's apparent valuation decline, the general valuations fall trend and the future of BNPL; with Money2020 Europe came an incredibly immersive experience for its audience, and also for SWIFT? For the first time, the company made a presence at the event, proving the value of collaboration across the sector, and increasing the expectations for SIBOS 2022 this year in Amsterdam for the first time. And of course, #buythedip - with the non-stop fall of cryptocurrencies and even GAFAMs, is it possible to achieve healthy returns? What about the booming rise of African-based fintechs - such as Ghanian Fido with a new 30M$ round? Africa is non-stop breaking investment records. Is this trend to continue, and how is it possible to scale it up? This and much MUCH more in this month's installment of "News From The FinTech Front"

The WebSummit came and went, but we have several different "knowledge bites" to showcase in our podcast for the coming weeks, products of the exceptional stakeholder that were (or still are) in Portugal for this year's edition of this incredible event. We start by providing some context - why exactly is Portugal relevant (with a little update from episode 17 - in case you were already one of our listeners), and follow up with the benefits of being in Portugal, why is such a desirable location currently for new companies and iniciatives to "set up shop", the reversed brain drain observe in the past years, and the interesting relationship between the worldwide Portuguese community in strengthening their commonalities, resources and possibilities through language to leverage their individual nations. None of this is parallel to aspects such as regulation, financial inclusion, digital absorption, funding - always present in our ecosystem zoom-in shows.

Transactions at the point of sale have been shifting for some time now withapps like Uber turning payments invisible and contactless. The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed even more transactions online and consumers have begun to experiment with new ways of paying. Improved, innovative payment experiences will be in many more places in the years to come and as new companies outside of finance incorporate fintech and digital wallets gain prevalence. Up to this point, plugging in card numbers has been the default way to pay online. But physical cards weren’t built for a digital world, and they come with a steep cost for merchants. Now, embedded, invisible payments take off, that means more people will link a card, account, or wallet and pay from that on an ongoing basis - “card on file”. That creates an opportunity for account-to-account payments, made much easier by PSD2 and Open Banking, to take off as the predominant means of payment.

DeCentralised Finance or DeFi is a shorthand for peer to peer public blockchain based financial services. While this sector has seen exponential growth from a low base in the last two years, skepticism abounds. On one hand Silicon Valley VCs such as Andressen and Draper have raised 500+ million dollar VC funds for the defi sector, to most experts in banking DeFi doesn't "make sense". In this episode we explore what DeFi is, what can be done with DeFi and what if any impact DeFi will have in the FS sector over the next five years.

Experts say that AI could transform the world in the same way that electricity has done. However, just like electricity, while AI promises a vast range of applications and benefit to the European consumer, this AI does not come without its costs and risks. Modern AI techniques such as deep learning are extremely data hungry and to feed AI, Silicon valley firms rely on gathering vast amounts of data from consumers. In recent years, this insatiable hunger for data has led to a strong reaction from European consumers who are feeling increasingly concerned about privacy and data protection. At the same time, this need to protect data privacy while deploying AI presents new opportunities for European fintech and technology firms to innovate. In this episode we explore the risks as well as opportunities that this healthy tension between AI and privacy presents for the European fintech ecosystem. An episode hosted by Ajit Tripathi and Matthias Kröner, with the participation of industry experts Liz Brandt (CTRL-Shift), Gil Perry (D-ID) and Fabian Eberle (Keyless).

This trend has accelerated further during COVID 19, As payments, lending, asset management and capital markets increasingly rely on digital technology and automation, cyber risks to consumers data and payments are also increasing correspondingly. In this episode our guests share their insights on what fintech is doing in Europe to protect customer data and customer assets.

Paolo Sironi and Matteo Rizzi are pleased to host Joan Rodrigues Frade – lead ITC architect of the 7 Billion EUR “Connecting Europe Facility” (CEF) – and Kelly Liljemo – organizer of the “Digital Initiative Challenge” (DIC) -.
To build a Digital Single Market, the CEF funds a set of generic and reusable digital infrastructure elements, known as Building Blocks, which offer basic capabilities that can be reused in any EU project to facilitate the delivery of digital public services across borders and sectors.
The DIC tasked EU’s SMEs and startups to come up with innovative ideas using these solutions, boosting their businesses and helping the EU Commission understand how to build solutions SMEs and startups can use.
