Can you really turn your day around in just sixty seconds? Sometimes all it takes is a few moments of resting in the presence of Jesus to relieve anxiety and find what we need to keep going. In this week's episode, we'll learn a short and simple practice that will help you turn away from whatever is going on in your life and focus on Jesus, asking for more of his love and life. [This episode is part of the summer replay series of my favorite episodes. New episodes return in Fall 2021!]

This Week's Practice: The One Minute Pause

This practice is adapted from Get Your Life Back: Everyday Practices for a World Gone Mad by John Eldredge.

How to Do the Practice:

  • Step away from the noise and chaos of your day.
  • Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
  • Remember that Jesus is with you and cares for you.
  • Pray: Jesus, I give everyone and everything to you.
  • Ask for union with God and for more of his life and love to fill you.

Two Ways to Use the Pause:

  • Set a reminder on your phone to go off at a couple different points in your day
  • Use the pause in moments of overwhelm or anxiety

Download The One Minute Pause app from John Eldredge to be guided through the practice (the app is completely free).

Do you ever spend time reading the Bible and feel like you didn’t really get anything out of it? You read the words, but they didn’t really connect with your heart. In today’s episode, we’ll do a practice together that will allow us to listen and receive from Scripture in a new way. [This episode is part of the summer replay series of my favorite episodes. New episodes return in Fall 2021!]

This week’s practice: Lectio Divina (or, Divine Reading)

For a free printable guide to use as you do this practice, visit lindsaysterchi.com/free.

These steps are adapted from Adele Calhoun’s Spiritual Disciplines Handbook.

The passage used in this episode’s practice is Ephesians 3:14-19 (NIV).

  • Silencio (Silence)
  • Close your eyes, take a couple deep breaths, and rest in God’s presence.
  • Lectio (Read)
  • Simply read or listen to the passage of scripture, slowly and without rushing.
  • Meditatio (Meditate)
  • Read or listen to the passage a second time. Notice if a word or phrase stands out or connects with you.
  • Oratio (Respond)
  • Read or listen to the passage a third time. Based on what you’ve heard or experienced, respond back in prayer to God.
  • Contemplatio (Contemplate)
  • Before you leave this time, rest in God’s presence and offer a prayer of surrender. Consider how to carry what you’ve heard or experienced into the rest of your day.

Ideas of scripture passages for this practice:

  • Ephesians 3:14-19 (the passage used today)
  • Colossians 1:9-14
  • Psalm 63:1-8
  • Psalm 23

What if spending just five minutes reviewing your day could lead to significant growth and change? In this episode, we’ll learn the short but powerful practice of the daily review. As we pay attention to our lives in the presence of God and make small adjustments along the way, we’ll see steady and sustainable growth over time that will change our lives. [This episode is part of the summer replay series of my favorite episodes. New episodes return in Fall 2021!]

Show Notes:

This week’s practice: Daily Review

  1. Decide when you will do the review.

  2. Ask God to show you what He wants you to remember about your day.

God, help me to remember my day the way YOU want me to see it.

  1. Draw four arrows (up, down, left, right), leaving space between each one.

  2. Write down one thing that comes to mind for each arrow.

Up: What was my high for today? When did I feel most like myself or most alive?

Down: What was the low for today? When did I feel least like myself?

Left: When was I moving away from God? When did God feel distant?

Right: In what ways did I move towards God? When did God feel close?

  1. Look over what you wrote and ask God if there’s anything He wants you to see or know.

  2. Close with a prayer of surrender, knowing that tomorrow is a chance to begin again.

Example prayer: God, I thank you for the good moments of my day, and I receive your grace and mercy for the low points. I pray that tomorrow, you will give me the strength and courage to show up in my day and with others as my full, true self in Jesus. I thank you that you were with me today, even in the moments when I didn’t even FEEL you there. I pray that tomorrow, I will be aware of your constant love and presence. Thank you that tomorrow is a chance to begin again and receive fresh mercy and grace to start a new day. Amen.

Have you ever gotten to the end of the day and realized you didn’t give God a second thought? We know God is always with us, but it can be a struggle to remember that in the middle of a busy day. This week’s episode will teach you a practice that will help you learn what it means to “pray continually,” and to find stillness and connection with God that will last beyond your quiet time. [This episode is part of the summer replay series of my favorite episodes. New episodes return in Fall 2021!]

Show Notes:

1 Thessalonians 5:17

This week’s practice: Breath Prayer

Identify a short phrase or sentence that expresses what you need from God right now, and pray it throughout your day to remember God’s presence with you

How to Practice Breath Prayer:

  1. Spend some time reflecting in God’s presence to identify what you most need from God right now.

What is one thing you want to ask of God right now?

What is one thing you need to remember about God?

  1. Looking over your list of responses, pick what most resonates with you today and turn it into a phrase or sentence that will be your breath prayer to God.

Examples:

God, give me patience.

Jesus, fix my eyes on you.

Holy Spirit, give me strength.

  1. Put this prayer somewhere you’ll see it throughout the day.

Examples: put on a post-it or set a reminder on your phone.

  1. Pray your breath prayer right in the middle of your busy day, especially when you feel anxious or overwhelmed (this doesn’t have to be out loud, of course!). Allow the prayer to re-focus your heart and attention on God, reminding you that He is always with you

Do you ever feel like your mind never slows down? Our minds are crowded with thoughts and lists, worries and stress, and it can feel like inner stillness is impossible. In this week’s episode, I’m sharing a practice called “download” that can help you get the mental clutter out of your head, and clear some space for inner stillness and peace.

[This episode is part of the summer replay series of my favorite episodes. New episodes return in Fall 2021!]

Show Notes:

This week’s practice: Download

Clear your mental clutter by writing down your scattered and messy thoughts. This will help you still and focus your mind so you can pay attention to yourself and to God.

How to Practice Download:

  1. Grab a piece of paper that you don’t mind throwing away when you’re done, and a pen.
  2. Set your phone timer for five minutes.
  3. Write down your thoughts to get out the mental clutter.
  4. Write stream-of-consciousness, jotting down anything that pops in your head.
  5. Write a to-do list of nagging tasks taking up brain space.
  6. Focus on one issue, problem, or source of anxiety. Write out all your thoughts, questions, or stress about just that one thing.

BONUS STEP: Try first doing this practice of download, and then following that with the practice of five minutes of silence (from last week’s episode). See if it helps to get things out of your head and onto paper before you sit in silence makes it easier to be still without your mind racing or being distracted.

Have you ever noticed how much noise there is in our lives? Because of this, silence can feel kind of radical, and a little uncomfortable. In this episode, we’ll talk about why silence is the best place to start if you want to grow and connect with God. I’ll walk you through how to get started with a 5-minute practice of silence, and we’ll discover why this simple practice is so powerful. [This episode is part of the summer replay series of my favorite episodes. New episodes return in Fall 2021!]

Show Notes:

What Silence is NOT:

  • Praying words to God
  • Getting warm fuzzy spiritual feelings
  • Hearing answers from God

What Silence IS:

  • Creating space for God
  • Resting in God’s presence
  • Allowing your mind to slow and settle

How to Practice Silence:

  1. Pick a time in the next 24 hours to do this practice and put it on your calendar.
  2. When it’s time to begin your practice of silence, set a timer on your phone for five minutes.
  3. Close your eyes and open with a simple, one-sentence prayer: God, I’m here and I’m listening.
  4. Simply be still and rest.
  5. When the timer goes off, end your time with a short, one-sentence prayer of gratitude for the time of quiet in God’s presence.
  6. (Bonus step) Reflect on how the experience was for you. How did you feel? Did the experience of silence bring RELIEF or RESISTANCE?

Does life feel like a performance of trying to get it all right? It can even feel like we have to perform to gain God's approval. But God isn't impressed by our success or disappointed by our failures. In this episode, we'll look at why viewing God as our "audience of one" isn't always helpful, and what it means to live WITH Him instead of FOR Him.

This Week's Practice: Reflection on Surrendering vs. Performing

Listen to the song "Lean" by Nichole Nordeman (you can find it here.)

Ask God to show you where in your own life you might be performing, rather than simply surrendering. And whatever you do today, imagine that God is doing it WITH you, that he is right there beside you each step of the way.

Who are the loudest voices and influences in your life? While it's great to learn from other people, sometimes we are looking to the wrong source to teach us how to live. In this episode, we'll pay attention to who we follow and why, and how to know when it's time to turn down the outside voices.

This Week's Practice: Reflection Guide

When you notice that someone you admire online has a loud voice in your life, whether that’s positive overall or negative, ask yourself:

  1. What about this person is appealing to me?
  2. Is what they are sharing real, or does it feel staged or manipulated to look better than it is?
  3. Is what they share helpful?
  4. How do I feel when I engage with their content? Do I feel encouraged and inspired? Or do I feel shame and less-than?
  5. When I’m inspired by what someone else says or does…How might that look like uniquely for me? What would it mean to live that out as ME in my unique life, rather than simply trying to copy how someone else does it?

When you want to change, what do you do first? But before we take action or try to fix what's wrong, there's another question we must consider first. In this week's episode, we'll explore what it looks like to start with the right question when it comes to our spiritual growth.

This Week's Practice:

  1. Spend some time reflecting on this question: What does God want to form in me right now?
  2. Then, ask God to show you: What practices will create space for God to do that?

Do you ever feel like you keep running up against the same wall over and over again? When we feel stuck, we generally have one of two responses: We either fight and try really hard, or we give up in defeat. In this episode, we'll talk about the first essential step to breaking through the walls that keep us from moving forward.

This Week's Practice: Seeing and Naming the Wall

  1. Consider: Where are you feeling stuck? In what areas of your life are you struggling to change?
  2. Close your eyes and picture a physical wall. What does it look like? What does that wall represent to you?
  3. Imagine what is on the other side of that wall. What is this wall keeping you from? Who do you want to be, and what does life look like on the other side of it?
  4. Imagine yourself beside the wall and think about your posture towards it right now. Are you fighting against it, trying really hard to break through? Or are you turning away from it, pretending it’s not there or trying to run away from it?
  5. Imagine that Jesus is there with you at the wall. How does it feel to know he is there with you, and that you’re not alone?
  6. What might Jesus want to say to you about this wall, this place where you feel stuck?
  7. Consider if there’s a next step that you can take with Jesus to begin moving forward wherever you are stuck.
  8. Receive the invitation of Jesus to surrender and rest in his presence as you face the wall together.

Do you ever wonder if you are missing out on the life you are supposed to be living? We want to know God's will for our lives and the big picture plan, but maybe it's a lot simpler than we think. In this episode, we'll talk about what God's will REALLY is for your life, and why growth does not always mean change.

Mentioned in this episode:

  • “What if we found out God’s big plan for our lives is that we wouldn’t spend so much of our time trying to figure out a big plan for our lives? Perhaps He just wants us to love Him and love each other.” Bob Goff (via Instagram)
  • Matthew 22:37-40

Reflection Guide:

  1. Think about your life as it is right now. Name your people…your work…the everyday tasks and routines that make up your days. What does a typical day hold for you?

  2. As you consider your days…Do you believe that your life is enough just as it is right now? Do you believe that YOU are enough?

  3. What would it look like to grow in loving God and people in your life as it is right now?

  4. How do you feel when you hear this statement: Maybe, you are exactly where you are supposed to be. How does that hit you? Is that hard for you to believe? Does that bring relief or anxiety? Bring all of those feelings into God’s presence, and see what He might have to show you.

  5. Ask God to show you the significance and purpose in how you spend your time. Rest in His presence, trusting that what you do matters…surrender any angst or anxiety you are carrying about the future, and trust that if something DOES need to change, God will show you in HIS timing.

Have you ever reacted to something with an intensity that was WAY out of proportion to what actually happened? Even if we KNOW we are overreacting, our emotions are still real and won't just go away. In this week's episode, I'm sharing my own experience of overreacting, why it didn't work to run from my feelings, and what I did instead to move on with my day.

This Week's Practice: Moving Through Uncomfortable Emotions

  1. Stop running from the emotion and allow yourself to feel it.

  2. Remind yourself that Jesus is with you and ask him for help.

  3. Name reality, while also recognizing that your irrational emotions are real.

  4. Remember that intense emotions don’t last forever.

  5. Identify next steps (if any), then let it go and move on.

Do your days seem to go by in a blur of mundane, meaningless tasks and to-dos? This week, we'll learn about a 16th-century monk who found God simply by washing dishes. We'll talk about practical ways to find meaning, even in the most boring, routine parts of our days.

This Week's Practice: Practicing the Presence of God

What We Learn from Brother Lawrence:

  • Even mindless and mundane tasks can be filled with purpose and meaning.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:31: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
  • It’s possible to connect with God even when you’re doing things that feel like a distraction from God.

Practical Ways to Practice the Presence of God

  • Set an alarm on your phone to go off every hour with the reminder: Practice the presence of God
  • Put a prayer in a visible place (by your computer, on the fridge, etc.): "God, thank you that you are always with me."
  • Say a one-sentence breath prayer throughout your day (Learn more in Episode 4)
  • Practice a daily review to notice how God was with you during all parts of your day (Learn more in Episode 7)

What do you hope to get out of your time with God? We might know the "right" answers to this question. But when we notice and name what our heart is really expecting, we'll probably find mixed motivations. In this episode, I'll share two things I often want from my time with God, and what He lovingly offers me instead.

This Week's Practice: Why do you spend time with God?

Spend some time considering these questions:

  • What do you hope to get out of your time with God?
  • What expectations or agendas do you bring into your time with God? (My examples: answers and feeling a certain way)

As you notice and name your motivations (without guilt or shame), confess those desires to God. Say a prayer of surrender, and trust that God will show you what HE has for you as you draw near to Him.

We usually think we need to ADD things to our lives in order to grow. But what if what you really need is to remove a few things? On this week's episode, we'll consider what's taking up space in schedules and our minds, and let go of a few things in order to create MORE space for God to fill.

This Week's Practice: What Do You Need To Remove?

Spend a few minutes reflecting on these questions:

  • What is taking up space...? In my schedule? In my mind? In the in-between moments of my day?
  • Write down a list of whatever comes to mind.

Ask God to show you:

  • What is taking up space that God might be inviting me to let go of?
  • What can I remove in order to create space for stillness, to create space for God?
  • What would it look like to let go of this?

Can you really turn your day around in just sixty seconds? Sometimes all it takes is a few moments of resting in the presence of Jesus to relieve anxiety and find what we need to keep going. In this week's episode, we'll learn a short and simple practice that will help you turn away from whatever is going on in your life and focus on Jesus, asking for more of his love and life.

How would you answer the question: What do you want? And why does that even matter? In this week's episode, we'll see why Jesus often asked this question in Scripture as we consider what it is that we REALLY want.

This Week's Practice: Naming What You Want

  1. Read the story of the blind beggar in Mark 10:46-52.
  2. Put yourself in the place of the beggar and imagine how it would feel for Jesus to call you out of the crowd.
  3. Imagine Jesus asking you the question: What do you want me to do for you?
  4. Write down any desires that come to mind.
  5. Say a prayer of surrender, releasing those desires to Jesus.
  6. As you pray, recognize that what you REALLY want is more of Jesus...or confess that you WANT to want more of him.

What would it look like to show up in the world as your full and true self? Not hiding who you are, but also not feeling the pressure to perform. In this week's episode, we'll do a simple practice that will help us identify who we are, and who we are NOT. We'll also talk about why that matters when it comes to spiritual growth.

This Week's Practice: Identifying Who You Are, and Who You Are Not

  1. On a piece of paper, draw a circle, leaving some space on the outside as well. The circle represents you, who you are. The OUTSIDE of the circle represents NOT you, the things that are outside of who you are (as it relates to personality and how you're wired).
  2. As you do this practice, ask God to show you how HE sees you.
  3. Inside the circle, write down some words that come to mind when you ask yourself: What is true about me?
  4. Outside the circle, write down some words that answer: What is NOT true about me?
  5. Allow this exercise to help you let go of who you think you SHOULD be, and walk in the freedom of who you actually ARE.

  3. What do you want this one area of your life to look like?
  4. Brainstorm a list of habits or small steps
  5. Pick a small step or habit.
  6. Put the habit or small step into practice.

This time of year can leave us feeling weak and weary. There's a lot to do, and our souls can feel heavy and overwhelmed. In this week's episode, I'm sharing a simple practice that can help you keep going, plus a verse that is giving me hope in the weary moments.

This Week's Practice: Reflection for the Weak and Weary

Am I feeling weak or weary?

What am I carrying right now?

  1. Grab a piece of paper and make a list of everything on your mind, both the big things and the small to-dos (see episode 3 to learn more on the practice of download).
  2. Read and reflect on this verse from Isaiah 40:29: "He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak."
  3. Give everything on your list to God, and ask for HIS strength and power before you move forward.

Why would we want to look back on the year 2020? Maybe your only reflection on this year is that you're glad it's almost over. But before we move on, it's important to look back and see what this season has to teach us. In this episode, I'll give you some questions as prompts to help you reflect on this year as you consider what to leave behind, and what to carry forward into 2021.

  1. What was the high point of 2020?

  2. What was the low point of 2020?

  3. Who were the people you are most grateful for this past year, and why?

  4. What events or dates stand out in your mind from this year?

  5. What accomplishment or success are you proud of from this year?

  6. What is something left undone this past year that you wish you’d made time for?

  7. What did God teach you or form in you this past year?

Questions about the pandemic:

  1. When did the seriousness of the pandemic first become real to you?

  2. What did a typical day look like during lockdown, when everyone was home?

  3. What unexpected thing did you learn or do because of the lockdown/pandemic?

We don’t like to wait. We’d rather rush ahead to whatever is next. In this season of Advent, and in a time when the world is ready to move on from our current struggle, waiting well is more important than ever. If you’ve ever tried to keep a gratitude journal or list, but struggled to keep up with it, this episode is for you. Maybe gratitude is less about a list, and more about simply paying attention to what’s right in front of us. In this episode, we’ll talk about how to simply be present as a way of practicing gratitude.

This week’s practice: A Prayer of Gratitude For Your Right-Now Life

For a free printable guide to use as you do this practice, visit lindsaysterchi.com/free.

  • Start by simply looking around so that you can be present to the place you actually are. What do you see?
  • Name what is true about this season, the tangible people and activities that make up your life.
  • As you visualize your life in your mind, simply express your gratitude to God for what you see.
  • Notice any pull you feel towards the past or the future, and name those feelings in the presence of God. Ask Him to help you stay present to your life as it is right now.
  • Thank God that no matter what is going on in your life, He is right there with you in it.

Are you finding it hard to resist the pull of your phone these days? So much is going on in our world right now, and it’s hard to step away from all the noise and information. In this week’s episode, I’m giving you some easy and tangible ideas for how to limit your scrolling and put technology in a healthier place in your life.

This week’s practice: How to Drastically Reduce the Pull of Technology

For a free printable guide to use as you do this practice, visit lindsaysterchi.com/free.

  • Reduce your use of technology by going analog.
  • Read a physical bible instead of through the app on your phone.
  • Instead of typing something, grab a piece of paper and a pen and physically write. (See Episode 3: Clear the Mental Clutter)
  • Find key moments of your day that you usually fill with noise, and fill it with silence instead.
  • The next time you drive, don’t listen to music or a podcast.
  • Go on a walk and don’t bring your earbuds. Just walk in silence.
  • When you’re waiting in line somewhere, instead of looking at your phone, just take in your surroundings.
  • When you pick up your phone, know exactly why you’re doing it.
  • Key Question: What are you hoping to find here?
  • Connect with people offline instead.
  • Set a limit for your scroll.
  • Before opening social media, set a timer for five minutes.
  • Decide what times of day you will NOT be on social media.

Do you ever spend time reading the Bible and feel like you didn’t really get anything out of it? You read the words, but they didn’t really connect with your heart. In today’s episode, we’ll do a practice together that will allow us to listen and receive from Scripture in a new way.

  • Psalm 23

What do you do when you have a suddenly strong emotion? What about when you are overwhelmed or irritated, but you don’t really know why? In today’s episode, I’ll share a simple tool you can do in those especially intense moments to help you handle it in a healthy way.

This week’s practice: Handling Big Feelings

For a free printable guide to use as you do this practice, visit lindsaysterchi.com/free.

When you feel overwhelmed by an emotion, whether it’s sudden or more subtle, ask these three questions to quickly identify what’s going on, and what to do about it.

  • What am I feeling?
  • Name the emotion. (I feel sad. I feel angry.)
  • Why do I feel this way?
  • Be specific. Identify what happened, and resist the impulse to make it bigger than what it is. Focus on what’s happening now.
  • What do I need now/later?
  • Consider, What’s one simple thing I can do to feel refreshed and restored?

Ideas for what to do NOW:

  • Take a deep breath.
  • Stop talking and think for ten seconds before you respond.
  • Say a one-word prayer: HELP.

Ideas for what to do LATER:

  • Set aside time to be alone.
  • Go to bed early to get more sleep.
  • Talk to a friend about the emotion.
  • Bring the emotion to God during your daily review. (See Episode 7: The Power of the Daily Review)

Amen.

Is your time with God just one more thing to get “done”? In today’s episode, I’m sharing my first experience with spiritual practices, and how it helped me move from striving to surrender when it came to my walk with God. We’ll consider together how we view God, and name what we actually want from our time with Him.

Show Notes:

Galatians 3:3

This week’s practice: Time of Reflection

  • How does your experience with God or church in your growing up years impact your view of Him now? Do you see Him as distant or close to you? Loving, or condemning? Harsh, or merciful?
  • Do you believe God would still love you, or even like you, if you didn’t get your act together?
  • Listen to the question in Galatians 3:3 again…“After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?” How would you answer the question in that verse? After initially receiving Jesus by faith and grace, are you now working and striving to prove yourself? What would it actually look like to continue by the Spirit instead of your flesh?
  • Think about your quiet time or other spiritual practices you might do. Why do you spend time with God? Does it feel like an obligation or something to get done, or do you experience it as an invitation to be with Jesus?
  • What do you want to experience in your times with God? Name what you want to God, and ask Him to reveal Himself to you.

When life is hard, do you find that your time with God gets neglected? How do you spend time with Him when your normal routines and rhythms get thrown off? In this episode, we’ll talk about how to embrace the reality of our current season while also creating space for God during the in-between moments of our busy days.

Show Notes:

This week’s practice: Do one simple thing to create space for God today.

A few ideas:

*Close your eyes for just a few seconds. Acknowledge God’s presence with you, and ask him to help you get through today.

*Put on your favorite worship song, and pray the words to God as you listen.

*The next time you drive somewhere, choose to ride in silence in order to settle your soul.

*Choose one verse of scripture and write it on a post-it note, and put it somewhere you can see it throughout the day.

*Before you go to sleep, say a prayer of gratitude for one thing from your day.

  7. When the timer goes off, set the paper aside and turn it over so you can’t see it.
  8. Say a short prayer of surrender for all that’s on your mind: God, I give all of these messy thoughts to you.
  9. Allow yourself to rest in the outer and inner silence for a few moments.

Welcome to the very first episode of Simple Spiritual Practices! In each episode of this podcast, we’ll talk about one tangible practice that will help you know yourself and God better. Most of these practices can be done in five minutes or less, so you can easily try it out TODAY. If you are ready to experience real growth in your life, or if you want fresh ideas on how to approach your time with God, this podcast is for you.

Show Notes:

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30 (Message paraphrase)

How would you respond to the questions Jesus asked: Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?

As you hear the invitation of Jesus to come away with him, how do you feel? Does that sound compelling and freeing, or do you feel some resistance?

Is there anything you’re carrying today that feels heavy or ill-fitting? Name it in the presence of God, and imagine how it would feel for him to remove that from you.

Imagine how it might feel to “live freely and lightly” as Jesus described in these verses. What might look different about your days if this was how your life felt?

Does the idea of practicing self-care as a mom ever make you just a tiny bit angry? Maybe it feels like yet one more thing that you’re failing at. How do you take care of yourself when it doesn’t even feel like you ever get a moment alone? In this week’s episode, we’ll consider a new definition of self-care. I’ll also share really practical ideas of what to do, how to do it, and what it looks like to practice self-care even when your kids are around.

Show Notes:

Definition of self-care: “a regular practice of doing what makes you feel like yourself.” From The Lazy Genius Way by Kendra Adachi

Categories of Self-Care:

*Something fun or enjoyable

*Caring for your physical self

*Caring for your emotional health (Episode 42: When You Want Certainty and a Plan)

*Caring for your soul

*Meaningful work

This week’s practice:

Answer this question: What makes you feel most like yourself? Your answers to that will show you what it means for you to practice self-care. Then pick just one item from that list, and decide when this week you will do that thing. Commit to taking care of yourself, even if it’s just a little at a time, and be creative in finding ways to get refreshed and restored.

Does your kid ever do things that annoy you? Of course they do. Sometimes we’re tempted to correct every little thing our kids do, simply because it’s odd or different. But what if asking ourselves one simple question would help us know if a behavior needs to be addressed, or simply let go? In this week’s episode, we’re talking about why bizarre behavior from our kids might be more about us than them, and how to help our kids know that we not only LOVE them, but like them.

Show Notes:

Quotes from Grace-Based Parenting by Dr. Tim Kimmel:

“Many of our kids do things that annoy, frustrate, or embarrass us, but they are not wrong. Every time we point these things out, we tell them that they don’t measure up. This builds a foundation of insecurity in them.”

“Kids inside homes where nonmoral issues are elevated to a level of BIG problems don’t get to experience the kind of acceptance that makes a heart feel securely loved. Instead they live with a barrage of nitpicking criticism…”

This week’s practice:

Before you correct a behavior in your kid, ask yourself: Is this a moral issue? Decide if it actually needs correction, or if it’s something that needs to be either let go or actually affirmed in them.

As we prepare for school to start, we know that things could change at any moment, and the unknowns of it all can be overwhelming. There is a lot of fear and anxiety about what’s to come, and we just want a clear plan, answers, and a pandemic end date would be kind of nice too. In today’s episode, we’re talking about what to do with all the emotions we’re dealing with right now. If you’re longing for answers and clarity when it comes to the near future, this episode is for you.

Show Notes:

We ask God for a plan, but instead, God offers His presence.

This week’s practice:

Find a time this week to bring your honest emotions into God’s presence. God can handle our fear, anger, sadness, doubts, or whatever you are feeling right now. If it helps you to write it down or speak it out loud, do what you can to get it out and surrender all of it to God. Rest in His presence, knowing that He sees you, he’s with you, and His strength will give you everything you need.

Do you feel like you’re waiting for life to get back to “normal” to have more time with God? Right now, most of our days have very little structure or routine, and it’s been like that for a while. But the truth is, we need God now more than ever and we can’t afford to wait until life is more predictable (because when is it ever, really?). In this episode, we’ll talk about how to use the things you’re already doing to build in the habit of connecting with God.

Show Notes:

“One of the best ways to build a new habit is to identify a current habit you already do each day and then stack your new behavior on top.”

from Atomic Habits: An Easy and Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear

Episode 6: The Power of Just Five Minutes

Episode 9: Washing Dishes and Other Spiritual Activities

This week’s practice:

Think about the consistent parts of your day, even if it’s nothing more than getting up in the morning, eating meals, and going to bed at night. Make a plan to connect with God after one of your consistent activities, and try it out for a few days. See if those small moments of stopping to take a breath and say a prayer help you stay connected to God in a time when everything feels uncertain. Be creative in how you approach your time with Him, be willing to adjust, and trust that He is there and wants to help you.

Do you ever fear losing yourself in motherhood? Or maybe you worry that if you weren’t a mom, you might not have anything else to offer. While being a mom is an incredibly important part of your life, it is not your identity. In this week’s episode, we’ll talk about the two extremes when it comes to how we see our identity as moms. And we’ll find the freedom that comes when we stop trying to prove ourselves, and instead, discover what our true identity is.

Show Notes:

Do you tend to fight your identity as a mom? Or do you tend to lose yourself in it?

This week’s practice:

Take some time to sit with the questions we talked about today. Do you tend to fight your identity as a mom? Or do you tend to lose yourself in it? Spend some time really thinking through those questions, and be honest with yourself and with God. Ask God to show you what it means to find your identity in Him alone. Ask Him how He sees you, and who HE says you are. Rest in that truth, and allow that to transform your motherhood from trying to prove yourself to instead, receiving the love of Jesus and loving your kids in the way God has loved you.

Do you ever feel like you don’t have a choice in your own life? In this week’s episode, I’m sharing two simple sentences that are helping me show up and be present in my life as it is now. We’ll talk about how even within our limitations, we have a lot more choice than we realize.

Show Notes:

  1. This is my life.
  2. I get to choose. (1 Corinthians 10:23-24, Galatians 5:13)

This week’s practice:

For this week’s practice, come up with your own go-to phrase or sentence or passage of scripture that you most need to hear right now. You can use the ones we talked about today, or come up with your own. Write those statements or verses down, and put them in a place you’ll see often.

When you’re emotionally overwhelmed, how do you pull yourself out of it? We tend to either feel defeated and do nothing, or try really hard to fix ourselves. But neither extreme tends to work. In this episode, we’ll explore that tension, and I’ll provide ideas of small steps you can take that will begin to move you towards wholeness and healing.

Show Notes:

  1. Adjust your mindset and perspective.

2 Corinthians 3:4-5

Episode 16: Do You Want Confidence as a Mom?

  1. Be intentional with your input. Add and eliminate.
  2. Be creative in finding ways to take a break.

This week’s practice:

Review the steps we talked about today, and pick just one that you need to focus on.

Is it your mindset and perspective that needs to change? Then spend time praying and asking God to show you the lies you are believing, and the truth you can replace it with in your thoughts. Is it the external input that is hurting you? If so, what can you add and remove to fill your mind with better things? Or do you need to get creative in finding ways to take a break and get refreshed? Identify what you need, and then ask for help in figuring out how to get that.

When God thinks of you, what do you imagine He feels? This question might seem simple or obvious at first. But the way we answer it can show us a lot about how we see God, and how we see ourselves. In this episode, we’ll reflect on our gut response to this question, and learn the truth to replace the lies we often believe about how God sees us.

Show Notes:

"Imagine God thinking about you. What do you assume God feels when you come to mind?”

“The fact that I am deeply loved by God is increasingly the core of my identity, what I know about myself with confidence.”

Quotes are from Surrender to Love: Discovering the Heart of Christian Spirituality by David G. Benner

This week’s practice:

Spend some time reflecting on the question from this episode, and answer it as honestly as you can. Imagine God thinking about you. What do you assume God feels when you come to mind?

Either write out or pray your response to this question, and bring it to God. Ask Him to help you replace any lies with the truth of His unconditional love for you. Use the scripture below to remind yourself of the truth of God’s love for you.

Passages of Scripture from Surrender to Love:

Psalm 23

Psalm 91

Psalm 131

Isaiah 43:1-4

Isaiah 49:14-16

Hosea 11:1-4

Matthew 10:29-31

Romans 8:31-39

What are the burdens you are carrying right now? My guess is that you are carrying quite a bit, and the weight of it can sometimes feel crushing. In this week’s episode, we’ll hear the invitation from Jesus to learn a way of living that is light and free.

This week’s practice:

For this week’s practice, name the burdens you are carrying. You might even want to just write them out in a list, just to see them in front of you. Seeing it all at once might feel overwhelming, but it’s important to name the reality of the weight you are holding right now. Then, read the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28-30.

Receive the invitation from Jesus to be gracious with yourself, to allow him to restore you, and to walk with him and learn from him. Ask Jesus to help you exchange your heavy burden for his light one.

As you see the differing opinions and disagreements going on right now, are you starting to lose your faith in humanity a bit? In today’s episode, we’ll talk about a few practical things you can do to both take care of yourself AND love other people well, even when we don’t agree.

Show Notes:

  1. Gather with your people. (See Episode 22: How to Find and Develop Friendships)
  2. Listen more than you speak. (James 1:19)
  3. Know when to step away from it all.
  4. Remember that our hope is not in people, but in Jesus alone.

This week’s practice:

This week, take an honest look at how you’re feeling about other people, and pick at least one of these ideas to help you restore your faith in humanity. Have a conversation with a friend who is safe and loves you. Approach conversations with a desire to listen; ask questions and seek to understand. Maybe you choose a day to stay off of all social media, or you unfollow a few people. And most importantly, draw near to Jesus so he can remind you that HE is our only hope.

Do you ever look back on a day or a week or a month and wonder: What did I actually DO in that time? It can all be a bit of a blur. In this week’s episode, I’m sharing a short and simple practice that helps me pay attention to my life. If you want to be more aware of what God is doing in you and your family these days, this practice will help.

Show Notes:

Make a list. Here are a few questions to get you started:

  1. What are you grateful for today?
  2. What questions do you have for God?
  3. What did you do that was life-giving today? What was life-draining?
  4. What do you want for yourself and your family today?

This week’s practice:

Try writing something down as a practice of paying attention. Use one of these questions to get you started, or come up with your own. Pick one of the questions, and then set a reminder on your phone with that question for the next three days. See if this simple practice of paying attention helps you to be more aware of what’s going on in your soul and what God might be doing in your life these days.

I wish I could ask you this question face-to-face: How are you doing, REALLY? But more important than me asking you this question, is for you to ask yourself: How am I really doing? In this episode, I want to invite you to a short time of self-reflection with a few questions. I want us to pay attention to our inner world for the purpose of figuring out what we need to move forward in a way that’s healthy for us and for our families.

Show Notes:

  1. How are you feeling? (SASHET: sad, angry, scared, happy, excited, tender)
  2. What’s not working right now? What are the pain points? What are some potential solutions or changes that might help?
  3. What do you need to feel like a human?

This week’s practice:

This week’s practice is to spend a few minutes paying attention to your inner world, to see what it might want to show you. Ask yourself, How am I feeling? What’s not working right now? And what do I need to do in order to feel like a human?

Either write down a few thoughts, or talk it through with a friend. If you have some tangible takeaways, that’s great! But if not, it’s enough for now to simply notice and name what you see. That’s a great place to start, and sometimes paying attention to what is true is all we need to adjust our perspective and get a fresh start.

Anyone else had a day lately when everything just fell apart? These falling-apart days will happen whether there is a global pandemic going on or not. Whether these days are few and far between for you, or you feel like EVERY day is a falling-apart day, there IS some hope for us in the middle of the struggle.Because these difficult days can serve as reminders of just how much we need Jesus.

Show Notes:

John 15:5

This week’s practice:

Make a plan for the next time you have a falling-apart day. Maybe you retreat to a room alone for a few minutes. Have John 15:5 written out and ready to reflect on whenever you have a tough day. Use these hard days to remind yourself of how much you need Jesus, and choose to dwell in his presence instead of going to a place of despair.

Does anyone else feel the pressure to make the most of this “unprecedented time” in history? But maybe this looks less like big goals or projects, and more like doing the things we’ve always done before. In this week’s episode, we’ll see that we don’t have to try and come up with a bigger and deeper goal for this time. It’s enough to show up for today, and simply live the life that is uniquely ours.

Show Notes:

Make the most of this time. Not because we’re in a pandemic, but because this is your life.

Psalm 90:12

Ephesians 5:15-16

This week’s practice:

Spend some time praying and reflecting on what it might mean for you to make the most of this time. As you do this, let go of any pressure you feel to do big things or to try really hard to get stuff done. Reflect on Psalm 90:12 and Ephesians 5:15-16. Write down a few thoughts on how you can be fully present in your life just as it is right now, and ask God to help you make the most of the time in a way that lines up with the life He is inviting you to live.

There are a lot of big events and markers of milestones we’re missing out on right now, especially with our kids. The loss looks different for everyone, but in a month that is typically full and busy with celebrations, the empty calendar can be a stark reminder of all that’s being lost. In today’s episode, we’re talking about taking the time to name the losses, and how to hold grief and gratitude together.

Show Notes:

There is a lot to grieve, and there is a lot to be grateful for. We don’t have to choose one or the other; we are allowed to feel both.

This week’s practice:

Take some time this week to slow down and name what has been lost, both for you and your kids. Maybe it’s a graduation, a trip, a big event, or simply the loss of your everyday routine and sense of normalcy. Whatever it is, name what has been lost…speak it out in the presence of God, share it with a friend…allow yourself to grieve that instead of stuffing it down. Give yourself permission to hold both grief and gratitude together.

Does anyone actually like waiting? Whether you’re waiting for a decision to be made, the next stage to arrive with your kids, or simply waiting for life to get back to normal, waiting is not something we typically get excited about. In today’s episode, we’re talking about what God’s Word says about HOW to wait, what we are actually waiting FOR, and what to DO while we wait.

Show Notes:

Psalm 27:13-14

Psalm 27:4

This week’s practice:

Read Psalm 27 in its entirety. I highlighted a few of the verses in this episode, but all 14 verses of this psalm are worth reading, especially right now. As you go through your day, occasionally pause and ask yourself: Where am I looking right now? How can you shift your gaze and your focus to the beauty of the Lord? As we look at his face, everything else falls into its proper place. And as we wonder what to do while we wait, our next steps will become clear as we dwell in the presence of God.

Do you wish that time would just speed up a bit? I really want to be present with my kids, to make the most of this time. But I’m also ready to just move on. If you find yourself struggling with that tension too, then today’s episode is for you. I’ll share a simple practice that might help you deal with all the complex emotions you might be feeling right now, and it just might help you become more present with your kids as well.

Show Notes:

Episode 18: It’s Only a Season

If you want to be present with your kids, first learn to be present with yourself.

This week’s practice:

Take some time to pay attention to how you are feeling. What do you miss? What are you feeling sad about? What do you want right now?

Get all of it out, whether that’s through download and writing it all out on paper, or sharing it with a friend. Then, intentionally surrender all of it to God. Imagine physically laying it down in his presence, and ask Him to help you and give you the strength you need to keep going.

Are you starting to feel like you’re just not cut out to be a "pandemic mom”? Do you think that if you were more organized or motivated, you would be handling this better? But maybe, we’re all just doing the best we can, and we can let that be enough. In this episode, I’m sharing the encouragement that I most needed to hear this week, along with a prayer from scripture that has been a lifeline for me.

Show Notes:

Ephesians 3:14-21

This week’s practice:

You are enough because you are in Jesus, and his spirit in you gives you everything you need. When you need to be reminded of that this week, go back to the passage we read today in Ephesians 3:14-21. Sometimes life feels too overwhelming and we don’t have the words to pray, so it can be helpful to take some right out of Scripture. Say these verses as a prayer this week, and ask God to remind you of what is true about you.

We know how we are supposed to answer this question: Is Jesus enough? Of course he is! But it’s one thing to make a sweeping declaration of surrender, saying we’ll give him our very lives…but what about when our comfortable and familiar routines are interrupted? In today’s episode, we’ll consider where we’re truly looking for life, and we’ll hear Jesus’ invitation to us that can change everything.

Show Notes:

John 4:10, 13

This week’s practice:

Take some time to read the story we talked about today in John 4: 1-26 and ask yourself: What are the wells that YOU are going to for life? As you search your heart in the presence of Jesus, my prayer is that he would remind you that he is the true source of life and joy and purpose, and that even if life never looks the same again, we don’t have to be afraid, and we can have hope because of him.

Do your days as a mom just feel like one interruption after another? Maybe you feel like as soon as you start to get into a task or get a moment of peace, your kids will need you, and some days it feels like you can’t get ANYTHING done. And now that everyone is always home all the time? Well, LIFE feels like one big interruption these days, and it can be hard to know just what to do with that. Today we’re talking about how to respond to interruptions, and we’ll see that Jesus offers an incredibly helpful example of just how to handle them.

Show Notes:

Matthew 14:13-23

What We Can Learn From How Jesus Responds to Interruptions

  1. When you encounter interruptions, respond with love and compassion.
  2. When it comes to your plans and your schedule, have open hands and a surrendered heart.
  3. Be creative in finding time to care for your soul.

This week’s practice:

Read the story of Jesus that we talked about today in Matthew 14:13-23. Notice the love and compassion of Jesus as he responds to the crowd, and how he handles being interrupted. Ask God to give you wisdom and compassion for your kids as you learn to love and serve in the way Jesus did.

Start your day by saying a prayer of surrender over your schedule and your plans, giving your day to God, ready to respond to interruptions in patience and love.

In this week’s episode, I’m sharing just a few ideas of how to take care of yourself during this time of panic and pandemic. This is basically what I have been reminding myself of lately. I want to give us some suggestions of anchors that can help us feel a little more rooted in a time when it seems like everything is up in the air and uncertain. These are just a few simple things to help you get what you need as a mom during this season

Show Notes:

  1. Stay present and pay attention to what is being formed in you. (What does God want to form in me through this?)
  2. Continue the habits and rhythms that will keep you healthy. (also see Episode 6: The Power of Just Five Minutes and Episode 21: How to Actually Pursue More of God)
  3. Bring your honest emotions to God and to others.

This week’s practice:

Spend some time reflecting on the question: What does God want to form in me through this? Believe that God wants to do something in you during this time, and spend a few minutes asking him what that might be. It’s okay if you don’t have a huge revelation or even a specific answer. Simply ask the question, listen, and write down a few ideas. Instead of just trying to get through this time, choose to be present and pay attention to God in it.

Do you struggle with comparing yourself with other moms? Do you feel like you just do things differently, and sometimes you wonder if you’re doing it right? In today’s episode, we’ll talk about how to let go of some of that pressure as we consider what our standard of motherhood SHOULD be, and why comparing ourselves to how other people do it might actually lead us in the completely wrong direction.

Show Notes:

It’s okay to do it differently than other moms. The important question is this: What does it look like for YOU to be a mom?

How do my kids experience my presence with them?

This week’s practice:

Take some time to get still and quiet before God and ask Him this question: How did you make ME as a mom? Ask God to show you how He uniquely created you, and how that might impact the way you live out your motherhood.

If you are struggling to see your unique gifts as a mom, maybe ask a close friend or your small group what they see in you. Take the opportunity to encourage one another as moms.

We are not meant to do life alone, and this is especially important when it comes to our mom life. Maybe you feel isolated or lonely, surrounded by kids all day but feeling incredibly alone. In today’s episode, we’re talking all about friendships: how to find them, how to actually make TIME for them, and how to go deeper than surface-level and connect with people in ways that are actually meaningful.

Show Notes:

Practical Steps to Develop Community:

  1. Look around and see who is already there.
  2. Take an easy risk and extend an invitation.
  3. Give the gift of going first.

This week’s practice:

Take the time to reach out to someone around you. If you already feel connected in your friendships, send a text, make a call, or meet up, just to reconnect and share what’s on your heart lately. Ask yourself what it would look like to take that friendship a little deeper, to be more authentic about what’s really going on in your life, so that you can better support one another.

If you recognize in listening to this episode that you feel lonely, first, bring that loneliness to God and believe that He will meet you in it. With His help, take one of the practical steps we talked about today to develop community.

How do I actually, tangibly pursue more of God? In this episode, we’re going to get really practical and talk about what that actually means. I’m going to share an example from my own life of how God is challenging me to make some changes in a pretty unexpected area of my life. If you’ve been wondering what it actually means to pursue more of God in your life, than this episode is for you.

Show Notes:

The Three Layers of Going Deeper with God:

  1. Have daily, intentional time with God. (see episode 7: When You DO Have Quiet and Time)
  2. Practice the presence of God throughout your day. (see episode 9: Washing Dishes and Other Spiritual Activities)
  3. Change the habits, routines, and rhythms of your daily life.

This week’s practice:

Take some time to consider where you’re at when it comes to these three layers. Are all of these layers in place for you? Where do you feel the need to grow the most? When it comes to your habits and the parts of your life that might not feel blatantly spiritual, where might God be inviting you to surrender?

Identify one small next step you could take today to develop one of these layers in your life. Remember that God wants to meet you in EVERY area of your life. Take some time to think and pray about this, and trust that God will show you what to do as you take his invitation to surrender all of it to him.

Have you ever wondered if there’s more to your walk with God than what you’re experiencing now? And what does “more” even mean? Today we’ll talk about the invitation to move beyond survival mode in our walk with God, and together, we’ll ask the question: When it comes to my walk with God, what do I really want?

Show Notes:

1 Thessalonians 5:17

James 4:8

Jeremiah 29:13

John 5:1-15

This week’s practice:

Read the story of the paralyzed man in John 5:1-15. Reflect on the question Jesus asks: Do you want to get well?

Ask yourself:

Do I want to grow?

Do I truly desire more of God?

Am I willing to surrender and then follow God’s leading in my life?

Pray your honest responses to God, and trust that He will meet you there.

Are you stuck in survival mode? There are some seasons as a mom when that’s just your reality. The goal is simply that everyone stays alive, and that’s about as much as you can manage. But sometimes, we get stuck there, when really, it’s time to move on. In this episode, we’ll talk about why it’s so important to discern what season you’re in, and what it looks like to pursue more than simply getting through the day.

Show Notes:

We are made for more than just barely making it through the day.

This week’s practice:

This week, take a few moments to discern your season. You can do this on your own, or it would be a great thing to discuss with a friend or in your small group.

Are you in survival mode?

Is that truly the season you’re in, or are you stuck there and it’s time to move on?

What are some simple steps you could take to move out of simply surviving to thriving as a mom, wife, and follower of Jesus?

It seems that as soon as you think one stage will never end, everything changes all at once and you find yourself in a brand new season. Whether you are soaking up every moment of where you’re currently at, or you’re ready to get on with it and move on to the next stage, this episode is for you.

Show Notes:

Ecclesiastes 3:1

This week’s practice:

This week, take some time to think about your current season, and reflect on these questions:

What are you going to miss about this season?

What are you NOT going to miss about this season?

How does the reminder that it’s only a season give you hope?

How can you slow down and notice the good things that won’t be there in the next phase?

Imagine the ages of your kids a year from now…five years from now…and ten years from now. What are you looking forward to? What will no longer be there that you will miss?

Have you ever had a day or a week where you just feel like you’re running on empty? It’s not like anything majorly bad has happened, but enough little things have added up to make you feel like you have nothing left to give. In today’s episode, I want to give you some practical things you can do to refuel when you’re just feeling DONE, and we’ll talk about we REALLY need when we’re feeling empty.

Show Notes:

  1. Pay attention to your physical health.
  2. Remove or minimize mindless distractions
  3. Choose silence over stimulation. (see Episode 6, “The Power of Just Five Minutes”)
  4. Lower the bar.

This week’s practice:

Make a plan for what you’ll do when you’re feeling empty. Instead of waiting until you’re drained to decide what to do, write down some tangible action steps you can refer to the next time you need to get refreshed. Use the areas we talked about today to get you started, or come up with your own.

Do you feel defeated as a mom, like you just can’t seem to do this parenting thing well? I believe that it IS possible to be confident as a parent, and in today’s episode, I share exactly why that is. My hope and prayer is that after listening to this episode, you would feel like you have what it takes to be the best mom for your kids. You are a good mom, and you have everything you need.

Show Notes:

2 Corinthians 12:9

2 Peter 1:3

2 Corinthians 3:4-5

This week’s practice:

Spend some time reflecting on the verses I talked about today. Focus on what God’s Word says about who we are, and what we have if we are in Jesus.

Read through 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, 2 Peter 1:3, and 2 Corinthians 3:4-5. Maybe even pick one of those and read it slowly…ask God to speak to you through it, maybe write down what you take away from those verses. Let God’s Word remind you that because of the power of God in you, you are capable of being a good mom, and God has given you everything you need.

If you’ve been a mom for more than five minutes, I’m guessing you have experienced what we’re talking about today. Worry and anxiety seems to just come with the territory of motherhood, because there are SO many things that could go wrong with our kids, and with our parenting. In today’s episode, we'll talk about how to release the burden of our anxiety as moms, and a tangible practice that we can do instead.

Show Notes:

Matthew 6:27

Philippians 4:6-7

This week’s practice:

This week’s spend a few minutes every day praying for your kids as a tangible way of turning your anxiety into prayer. Pray about your worries about your kids, and then release that to God. Also spend time thanking God for your kids and naming specific ways you see Him moving in their lives.

Let’s talk about mom anger. Most, if not all, moms deal with this on some level, yet we often think we’re the only ones. A lot of us didn’t even realize we struggled with anger until we had kids. In today’s episode, my hope is that you would feel less alone in your struggle with anger, and that together, we can find some help and hope for just how to deal with it.

Show Notes:

Ephesians 4:26

Philippians 2:12b-13

How to Deal with Anger:

  1. When you feel anger rising up, take a five-minute reset.
  2. Believe it’s possible to change. Don’t just give in to your anger, but actively fight to respond in a better way.

In a moment of responding in anger:

  1. Take a deep breath and just stop talking.
  2. Pray, out loud if you need to, and ask Jesus for help.
  3. Apologize to your kids for responding in anger.
  4. If possible, take a five-minute reset.

This week’s practice:

Sit down and make a plan for what you’ll do when you feel angry. Instead of waiting until the heat of the moment when you’re losing your cool, take some time when you are calm and things are quiet to decide ahead of time what you will do.

Examples:

  1. When I feel anger stirring under the surface, I will close myself in my room for two minutes of silence and prayer.
  2. When I catch myself yelling, I will stop, take two deep breaths, apologize to my kids, and walk away to regroup.
  3. Instead of yelling, say in a calm voice the words “I’m feeling angry” and then state why. Rather than SHOWING your anger by yelling, express it in a calm and rational way.

Does the start of a new year make you feel like you need to change your entire life all at once? Maybe you put pressure on yourself to suddenly fix everything that feels wrong in your life all at one time. In this episode, we’ll talk about a simpler, much more doable way to approach change as we start a new year.

Show Notes:

The Next Right Thing by Emily P. Freeman

Small Steps for Spiritual Growth:

Read one chapter of the bible.

Read one verse of the bible.

Turn off the radio on your drive to pick up the kids from school, and spend that time in silence and prayer.

Say a prayer of gratitude for your day before you go to bed.

Listen to one worship song, and really listen to the words and reflect on them.

This week’s practice:

Think about a goal you have or an area of life that feels overwhelming, and just do the next right thing. Instead of trying to change your whole entire life, pick one thing to do and let that be enough. Write it down, check it off, and rest in knowing that you don’t have to do it all. Just do the next right thing.

Do you ever feel disappointed that the reality of Christmas doesn’t live up to the dreamy expectations in your mind? Christmas is such a special time, but real life still happens. Our kids are still kids, and we are still US, with all our insecurities and anxieties. So it can feel like a letdown when things don’t quite go according to plan. In this episode, I’m sharing a story of my own unmet expectations this season, and how one short phrase gave me the grace I needed to hit the reset button and turn things around.

Show Notes:

“Always we begin again.” St. Benedict

Lamentations 3:22-23

This week’s practice:

This Christmas season, when you inevitably run into a moment that falls short of what you were hoping, remind yourself of the wisdom of St. Benedict: Always we begin again. Say it out loud or make it a prayer in the middle of the chaos, just as a reminder that you get to start over.

Do you ever feel like you are just somehow doing it wrong as a mom? I have those moments frequently, and it seems like I question pretty much everything when it comes to parenting. But what if the secret to being a good mom really came down to just one thing? In this week’s episode, we’re going to set aside all the competing voices and opinions, and focus on the one thing that truly matters.

Luke 10:41-42: “Martha, Martha,”the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

This week’s practice:

When you start to feel overwhelmed by all the “shoulds” and expectations, say this prayer: Jesus, you are all you need. Put this prayer in a place you will see it often, or set a reminder on your phone to prompt you.

Have you ever thought of washing dishes as a super spiritual activity? Most of us had dreams and visions of what it would be like to be a mom. But a lot of days, it feels like all we’re doing is cleaning up after everyone. In today’s episode, we’ll look at the life and practices of a 17th-century monk, and see how we actually have quite a bit in common with him as moms. Listen in as we learn from Brother Lawrence how the most boring, normal, mundane parts of our day can actually lead us right into the presence of God.

Show Notes:

“The Practice of the Presence of God” by Brother Lawrence

What we can learn from Brother Lawrence:

  1. Even the smallest tasks, the ones that FEEL insignificant, can actually be filled with purpose.
  2. It’s possible to connect with God even when you’re doing things that feel like a distraction from God.

This week’s practice:

Follow Brother Lawrence’s example and practice the presence of God. Make it your goal to remember God’s presence with you even during mundane moments of your day.

Set an alarm on your phone to go off every hour, and label it “practice the presence of God.” Or write a short prayer and put it somewhere you’ll see often: "God, thank you that are always with me.”

Do you ever feel like being a mom is a distraction from your walk with God? It’s easy to feel that way when your kids interrupt your quiet time or seem to steal your peace. But what if being a mom is what actually CAUSES you to grow? In today’s episode, we’ll talk about why the chaotic and stressful moments of motherhood are actually the places God wants to grow us the most.

Show Notes:

We need the quiet to encounter God and grow in our relationship with Him. AND we need the loud and chaos of hard things…LIKE being a mom…to grow too.

The things formed in me in the quiet can only be lived out in the loud.

How God grows our faith through motherhood:

  1. Growing in the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
  2. God being our strength in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)
  3. Denying ourselves to follow Jesus (Matthew 16:24-25)

This week’s practice:

Read over the verses mentioned in today’s episode, and consider how God might use your motherhood to grow you in each of these areas.

Galatians 5:22-23

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Matthew 16:24-25

When you DO have quiet and time to spend with God, what does that actually look like? What do you do, and what if you feel like you’re not getting anything out of it? In this episode, I’ll share what my own personal quiet times look like, and give you some tangible ideas to try if you feel stuck in a rut.

Show Notes:

Components of my quiet time:

  1. Prayer and Listening: Say a short prayer recognizing God’s presence with you, and spend some time in quiet and listening. (Note: prayer and listening are woven throughout my quiet time.)
  2. Writing: Write something down. Try journaling, or just write a few bullet points capturing where your heart is today. Try the download practice we talked about in episode 6.
  3. Reading: Read directly from the Bible. Here are a couple resources if you want to try using a reading plan:
  4. YouVersion: https://www.youversion.com/
  5. She Reads Truth: https://shereadstruth.com/

If you’re struggling in your quiet time…

  1. Not connecting with Scripture? Try dropping your reading plan for a while. Pick a book of the bible and only read a few verses at a time, and spend more time quietly reflecting on what you’ve read.
  2. Feeling disconnected from God? Try spending more time in silence, just being with Him and listening.
  3. Struggling with focus? Try writing something down to get your mind centered.

This week’s practice:

Experiment with your quiet times to figure out what works for you.

  1. Pick a consistent time to spend with God, and stick with it for a week.
  2. Identify where you feel stuck in your quiet time, and name one thing you can do to change it up.

What if you could connect with God in just five minutes? Five minutes isn’t a lot of time, but we can either use that time to check out OR to connect with God in a powerful way. In today’s episode, we’ll talk about two simple tools anyone can use that can be done in a short amount of time.

Five minutes is actually not a lot of time. But depending on how you can use it…how it FEELS can be completely different.

Two Simple Five-Minute Tools

  1. Silence: Turn off all the outside noise and sit in silence for five minutes with no agenda but to be still in God’s presence.
  2. Download: Get a scrap piece of paper and write down your messy, scattered thoughts, just to get them out of your head and onto paper to clear the mental clutter.

*Take it one step further: First, download your messy thoughts for five minutes, THEN spend five minutes in silence. See if getting the mental clutter out helps you enter silence and stillness.

This week’s practice:

Set aside five minutes of your day, and instead of checking out, find a simple way to connect with God. Try the practice of silence or download, or whatever will help you focus your heart on Jesus.

Suggestion: Set a reminder on your phone for a time later today that you know you’ll have five minutes, or maybe do this right after you finish listening to this podcast. Everyone has five minutes, so instead of checking out, choose to use that time to connect with God.

How do you have a quiet time as a busy mom with not a lot of quiet OR time? In today’s episode, we talk about the purpose of a quiet time, and how it might look different depending on your unique season.

––

This week’s practice:

Spend some time reflecting on these questions. You can jot down your answers, or talk about it with a friend or your small group:

What do you think of when you hear the phrase “quiet time”? What’s your gut reaction, and how do you feel about it?

What might it look like to move this from an obligation, to an invitation to simply connect with Jesus?

Have you ever felt like an outsider as a mom? Like you just don’t fit in to the typical or ideal picture of what a mom should be? In this episode, we’ll talk about how our unique differences and challenges as a mom can be a gift, and how we’re never as alone as we think.

2 Corinthians 1:4

"who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God"

This week’s practice:

Sometime this week, take a risk and open up to another mom about a struggle you’re facing in your motherhood. It’s tempting to think we’re the only mom struggling, but when we give the gift of going first we usually discover we’re not alone and we can support each other.

If you’ve ever felt way in over your head in your role as a mom, then this episode is for you. Sometimes we wonder if being a mom is this hard for everyone, or if it’s just us. In this episode, we’ll learn how feeling desperate as a mom can actually be a gift, if we allow it to drive us to the presence of Jesus.

Show Notes:

1 Corinthians 2:1b-5

This week’s practice:

Download your free phone wallpaper HERE or at newhopechurch.cc/listen!

“Let your desperation drive you to Jesus.”

On the days you’re feeling desperate as a mom, let this be a reminder to go to Jesus instead of giving up in defeat.
