Arrested in Turkey and imprisoned for two years, missionary Andrew Brunson faced isolation, despair, and what felt like the silence of God. In this powerful conversation, he opens up about the spiritual crisis that shook his faith — and how that silence became the doorway to deeper intimacy with God.

Andrew also reflects on the political and religious forces behind his imprisonment, why he believes pressure on Christians is rising in the West, and how believers can prepare their hearts for testing times ahead.

👉 Listen to this gripping testimony of suffering, perseverance, and unshakable faith — a story that reminds us God’s silence is never His absence.

In this podcast episode, Kenneth and Jack discuss Armenia's history, recent conflicts, and the state of Christianity in the country. Armenia, the first nation to adopt Christianity in the 4th century, has faced significant challenges, including a genocide during WWI and recent conflicts with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh. These conflicts have led to the displacement of over 100,000 Armenians. The Armenian Apostolic Church, which comprises 95% of the population, is largely nominal due to historical oppression. Jack emphasizes the need for prayer for peace, revival, and resources for the church in Armenia, highlighting the ongoing geopolitical threats and the desire for a deeper faith among Armenians.

Earlier this year on the podcast we spoke to Release International’s associate ministry worker Petr Jasek. We talked about his experience of spending 445 days in a Sudanese prison and the impact this had on his faith. We also chatted about the launch of his book Imprisoned with Isis which tells his story. Now Release International is excited to be working with a London based theatre company to produce and tour a new dynamic production of Petr’s story across the UK in 2021.

On today’s podcast guest host James talks to Artless Theatre Company directors Jon and Chris. They chat about what inspired them to take on this project and how their material is developing.

It’s the middle of the night and you’re woken by gunfire. You grab your things and run – you don’t want to be there when they arrive at your door.

That is the experience of so many Christians in north and central Nigeria. Villages are raided, men, women and children are murdered, and thousands are made homeless. They are dying every day and the world seems to know very little about it.

On today’s podcast host Sarah is speaking to Nigerian Christian leader and Release International partner, Hassan John. Listen in as he provides some searching analysis of what lies behind the violence and how the problem is growing across the wider West Africa region. But he’ll also tell us about how God is at work even in that darkness.

On February 13, 2017 Pastor Raymond Koh was abducted off the streets of Malaysia. He hasn’t been seen or heard from since, and his car has never been found. Raymond’s case has drawn international attention from Christians, governments and human rights organisations.

At Release International we have been running a petition to the Malaysian Prime Minister and the Inspector General of the Malaysian police calling for information about Raymond’s disappearance to be released, and insisting that he is safely returned to his family. You can still sign that petition at releaseinternational.org/releaseraymond

On today’s podcast host Sarah will be speaking to Raymond Koh’s courageous wife Susanna who has shown great strength and dignity throughout this trial. Listen in as we talk about what kind of man Raymond is, what happened to him and how she has learned to show grace towards those responsible for his abduction.

Iranian Christian Ebrahim Firouzi is currently serving an extended period of internal exile in south-east Iran. This follows his release from prison late last year where he served a 5-year sentence for ‘acting against national security.’

Although this charge was framed in political terms there is no doubt that it came as a direct result of Ebrahim’s decision to follow Jesus and share his faith with his fellow Iranians.

The following interview was originally conducted in Farsi by Joseph Hovsepian, the son of martyred Iranian church leader Haik Hovsepian. We are thankful to Joseph and our friends at Hovsepian Ministries, as well as our associate ministry Voice of the Martyrs, for giving us permission to share this translated version of Ebrahim’s testimony.

Jesus told his followers to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations. But how do you reach isolated semi-literate communities whose traditions make them wary and even hostile to the gospel?

In Central Asia Release partners Hugh and Barbara are using radio to introduce the local people to Jesus. In many ways that rural world of storytelling and family dynamics has close parallels to the ancient world of Jesus and his disciples. But wherever the gospel is breaking new ground there is also inevitable opposition.

How does your faith stand up in the face of death threats and betrayal? Listen in as we discuss this important frontier of gospel ministry.

The world is still reeling from the impact of Covid-19 and everyone is affected in some way, not least persecuted Christians. As well as the regular opposition and marginalisation they face they also now have to cope with the spread of the virus and the restrictions of lockdown – in many cases without the health care provision and economic support we are so privileged to have in this country. Release International is working hard to support all of our international partners during this time of crisis.

In the UK we are approaching a sixth week of lockdown. On today’s podcast I am joined by Release workers Kenneth, James and Stephen. We’ll talk about how the restrictions are impacting and bringing innovation to the UK facing work of Release, and also how the experiences of persecuted Christians can help us to cope with lockdown.

Eritrea has been described as the North Korea of Africa – a comparison that immediately lets us understand just how difficult things must be for Christians who live there.

On today’s podcast host Sarah is joined by Dr Berhane, the head of Release Eritrea, a Release International project partner for the work in Eritrea.

Much of the work he does is extremely sensitive and we won’t be able to discuss the details, but listen in as we talk about his home country, the people he knows and loves, and his determination to continue to work on behalf of those who suffer there for Jesus.

How would you feel if you were arrested and imprisoned because of your faith? In some parts of the world the prospect of spending time in prison is an immanent risk for Christian believers. In Pakistan hundreds of Christians have been falsely accused under the notorious blasphemy laws and many are currently behind bars.

On today’s podcast host Sarah is joined by Release worker Imtiaz and Release partner Waseem who is based in Pakistan. We’re going to discover what life is like, not just for Christian prisoners, but also for their families. And we are going to be reminded of just how important it is for Christians here in the UK to remember them.

Freedom of religion, freedom of belief, is something we tend to take from granted in the West. We can believe in any god or no god - and crucially we can change our mind. When the evidence stacks up, or when we have an encounter we just can’t explain, we can change our position.

But in many places that kind of freedom does not exist. Choosing to change, choosing to follow Jesus if you are not from a Christian background is simply not an acceptable option.

On today’s podcast host Sarah is speaking to a remarkable couple from South East Asia. They made that daring choice to follow Jesus and now they are working discreetly to help others in a similar position.
