Owen loves the Grinch this year. More than Santa. ...Not more than presents, but still A LOT.
In this special Christmas episode, Mama joins Owen to read Dr. Seuss' classic "How the Grinch Stole Christmas".
WARNING: Owen does a lot of shouting in this episode. It's mixed so that it's not painful, but it's still yelling.
Owen watches the waveforms as we record and then yells a lot.
A lost episode! Recorded back in December, this episode has Owen and Dad out in a park with a sled.
This is the first in a series of "dreams" as told by Owen. There will be more. Hopefully many more.
For context, Bingo is a character from a kids' show called Bluey
The Owen Hour returns after its extended hiatus!
There will be dreams, recordings from over the break, and, you know, weird Owen stuff.
We take a walk through the woods to the Wobble Dock, look at a lot of mushrooms, run through mud, talk about dead trees, argue about who should carry whom, and more!
Bicycle hands, Growing Vegetable Soup (by Lois Ehlert), aggressive vegetable chopping, all varieties of high-five, aggressive extreme hamboning, Owen playing solo while Dad puts his coffee in a travel mug, creative train innovations (and fliptricks), and more!
We talk Kraftwerk, Art Attack, dancing, bones, more Art Attack, a distracted dad, Art Attack, and Art Attack.
Doing a puzzle, but it's just the audio...
Also included: the new classic story Goodnight Beer
A weird, unfinished episode. We watch the garbage truck go by (twice) and play with trains and a toy firehouse. Hippo is there too. And some loud cat purring. And then an abrupt ending.
We discuss a Frog and Toad anthology, anatomy, and pumpkin spice season, and Dad turns the tables on Owen...
Today's podcast covers:
- developments in our current read-through of the Winnie-the-Pooh books (spoilers)
- This Is A Band About Cups
- a prolonged kitchen jam
- playgroup re-opening
- Owen has a meeting
- and probably more!
WELCOME TO SEASON 3!
First, the big change: we're going for longer but fewer episodes. It's a big change, but I think it's worth it. We'll release episodes each week on Monday and Thursday.
Owen is two and a half years old now and is chattier than ever. In this episode, we have a picnic on the Wobble Dock, a floating dock in a pond in a wildlife spot we often visit. We talk snacks, animals, animal sounds, and Puffin Rock.
In the Season 2 Finale, Owen talks about his measuring spoon, the weather, a family with a dog, a squished dog poop bag, and the things he didn't like. GOBO!
Owen and Dad return to the Creek for the first time in around one month. There are damselflies, podcast talk, gibberish, splashing rocks, and a lot of "why, daddydaddy?"
Owen and Dad hang out at a playground now they they have reopened. Owen's new favourite word is revealed... but he doesn't really show it off YET.
Another Making Music! This time with MUCH LESS Dad!
Owen walks you through how to skateboard using a wicker basket while Dad makes noise in the background.
Another long jam with Owen! He does a few renditions of "The Rocket Ship Song" across the... 10+ minutes of this episode...
Owen plays in the backyard with his toy flowers and garden centre and talks about camping
The bushings on my skateboard are very squeaky...
Owen shares Dad's skateboard and talks about pizza.
"I almost did a pop shove-it 160 180!"
Owen plays around on the skateboard (with Dad's help).
Note: Recorded from inside a pocket so it might sound a bit strange
Owen mixes his breakfast together in a truly... innovative way. And a thunderstorm is in the forecast!
Owen hangs out at a skatepark and looks at the letters on a plaque, all while noisy work goes on in the background.
Owen snaps a bunch of his crayons (they're his to do with as he likes...) and writes his name.
HAPPY 100TH EPISODE!
Owen decides he doesn't want to celebrate 100 episodes, talks about books, and wants to match. We revisit the Rules of Rice Bin.
Owen listens and tries to chat to some frogs in a culvert, including the Culvert Pipe Frog.
Welcome to the next 8.5 minutes of your life! You may not believe it, but this is a much abridged version of this jam. Sorry about your ears...
Owen plans out his bedtime reading list and recaps the skateboarding and biking adventures of the day.
Owen talks about Ocean Meets Sky by the Fan Brothers, his straw cup, and we talk a little bit about going to the skatepark.
Owen sleepily ignores most questions while flipping through a book. But he's also here to talk about skateboard safety.
Owen winds down for bed. He has visitors who have been keeping him VERY busy, and he is a very sleepy guy.
Owen holds the recorder and is in charge.
We talk about his diaper change, numbers, and recording a podcast. Stay tuned until the end because he drops a BOMB of a sign-off.
In the basement, we hang out in Owen's tent, talk about camping, and pretend to paddle canoes to Aunt Jess' place.
At the creek, Owen finds a funny shaped rock, talks about the finer points of rock throwing, and wakes Daddy up by throwing rocks in the water.
Owen reads a book (My Dad Is Amazing by Sabrina and Eunice Moyle) and decides to show a picture of a frozen watermelon treat to some watermelon he has in the fridge.
Owen plays with the balloon a kind woman gave to him. He also counts the cats on my shirt.
Owen and Daddy make more music together!
NOTE: THIS EPISODE MAY NOT BE YOUR CUP OF TEA. Daddy made (and continues to make) experimental music for years. Owen is now helping. Owen has some A+ commentary about halfway through, so bear with the first part if it's not your thing. It gets better.
Owen has a breakfast picnic at the park, rides his bike, and sings a song.
(The unearthly hum in the background is a number of distant lawnmowers)
The doctor is in.
Owen plays with his stethoscope, Daddy says diaphragm a lot, and heartbeats are heard.
(Sorry about the sirens in the background; I didn't even notice them when recording).
THE CREEK WEEK FINALE
Washing hands in the creek, tadpole talk, and some final splashes.
Owen throws rocks and talks about his desire for maple syrup (with pancakes) for dinner. He got pancakes with maple syrup for dinner.
Rocks that are shaped like other things, throwing rocks into the creek, scary caves and what lives in them; all this and more as CREEK WEEK CONTINUES!
WELCOME TO CREEK WEEK!
In this first of 5 episodes recorded at Owen's favourite creek, we climb rocks, build dams, and climb some more.
Owen and Daddy play kicking games, pet Shrimpy (who you should follow on Instagram @chezshrimpy), and spend some time together in the backyard.
Owen and Daddy are out for a hike, looking at mushrooms, talking about dogs and rocks and rivers, and more!
Owen and Daddy make some music together with a Kaossilator Pro, a bunch of pedals, some noise makers, a guitar, and a slide guitar (lap steel).
Owen rides his potty like a jet ski, confuses it with a horse, which he then confuses with frogs/toads.
Owen plays with trains, Daddy makes his greatest Dad Joke to date, we talk about water slides and the unbearable heat.
I admit: I didn't record a new, full episode for today. Owen went to bed before we had the chance. But I found this clip of him asking questions about the recording interface we use and it seems like a quaint little episode, so here it is! And, to be honest, he wants to do all the recording himself these days, but he just can't keep his finger off the dang button that turns it off!
SEASON 2!
We talk about the animals we saw today, Owen does yoga, Wise Words are replaced by Sage Advice (very different), and Owen bonks his head.
In the season finale of The Owen Hour, Owen has important things to say, plays with both his soccer ball and his rainbow ball, and plans out Season 2 of the podcast.
We'll be taking the weekend off, but will be back on Monday with SEASON 2!
Owen and Daddy are out for a walk in the woods. Owen tells all about animals and exciting things he's seen: moths, deer, a robin's egg, and more!
