6 most common limiting beliefs according to ChatGPT. I asked AI what the most common limiting beliefs are and this is what came back!

Self-limiting beliefs are thoughts or attitudes that hold individuals back and prevent them from reaching their full potential. Here are six common self-limiting beliefs:

  1. I'm not good enough: Many people struggle with feelings of inadequacy and believe they are not capable or worthy of success. This belief can hinder personal and professional growth.
  2. I'm afraid of failure: Fear of failure can paralyse individuals, preventing them from taking risks or pursuing their goals. This mindset often leads to missed opportunities and a lack of personal development.
  3. I don't deserve success: Some individuals harbor the belief that they don't deserve success or happiness. This self-limiting belief can sabotage efforts to achieve goals and lead to self-sabotaging behaviors.
  4. I'm too old (or too young): Age-related beliefs can limit opportunities. Feeling too old can lead to a sense of missed chances, while feeling too young can undermine confidence and discourage taking on responsibilities.
  5. I can't change: The belief that personal traits or behaviors are fixed and unchangeable can hinder personal development. Embracing a growth mindset is essential for overcoming challenges and evolving as an individual.
  6. Others' opinions define me: Relying too much on external validation and letting others' opinions dictate one's self-worth can be a major self-limiting belief. It's important to cultivate self-awareness and confidence independent of external judgments.

Overcoming these self-limiting beliefs often involves self-reflection, challenging negative thoughts, and cultivating a positive mindset. Seeking support from friends, mentors, or professionals can also be beneficial in breaking free from these limiting beliefs.

In this episode, I explore these 6 key areas, to see how they or other beliefs maybe impacting you.

Focus on intrinsic NOT the extrinsic motivations! Intrinsic goals are better because they are internal to YOU. You can control them, things like autonomy, mastery and purpose. Extrinsic goals are external to you and often you can chase something you have no control over achieving. Examples are meeting an external goal, garnering praise or approval, winning a competition or award.

6 Principles of Time Management RUSHCast, recorded as a lunchtime LIVE recently, check in on Pete giving a quick run through of 6 key principles of time management.

The principles Pete explains in this podcast are;

Carlson’s Law – uninterrupted work is more efficient and improves 'flow'.

Pareto’s Law – 80% of your results come from 20% of your effort, the effect of the vital few & trivial many.

Parkinsons Law – time=availability and work increases to fill a vacuum.

Murphy’s Law – what can go wrong, will go wrong…….

Illich’s Law – circadian rhythm – energy fluctuates through the day, know yourself, your strengths and weaknesses and adjust your day accordingly.

Fraisse’s Law – time is subjective, when you are in flow, time passes quickest.  People spend time on what they enjoy most and put off what they enjoy least.

How do you have Effective 121's with your team? Why have 121's? Listen in to find out more....

In this session I cover the 6 KEY SKILLS managers need to carry out Effective 1:1s

1) No blame; your people do the best they can, with the information, training & support you provide them. You need to take responsibility for their current performance too. If you need to provide developmental feedback, it’s best to manage it at the time the performance shortfall has occurred (don’t save it up for your 121 see rule 5 in the next section below).

2) Empathy; the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. A core skill required for effective leaders & managers. Be caring….you’re a good person right?!

3) Problem solving mindset; be collaborative and see skills 4 & 5.

4) Be curious; seek to understand the situation, don’t jump to conclusions, seek first to understand, practise listening without judgement.

5) Be supportive through praise & recognition; this can be really difficult, particularly if it is new to you. The best way to develop is through encouraging and recognition of the good which is more effective then criticism of the poor. (Have you ever felt like you only get picked up when things go wrong, not told what went well, or what goes well is never noticed….don’t be that d*£k.)

6) Be open; openness & transparency are vital for engagement. Encourage your team member to ask you questions and respond as openly as you are able. Have the humility to admit you don’t know too, if needed.

I also cover the 6 Ground Rules for Effective 121's too;

1) Make time & space with no distractions, diarise & don’t move

2) Set clear goals that align expectations, be honest in your feedback

3) 3 stages to trust

4) PPPPP-Preparation prevents piss poor performance

5) Ask open questions and REALLY listen (2 ears & 1 mouth), 121 is THEIR time not yours.

6) Make time for developmental discussion I hope you enjoy this session and please make sure you subscribe.

In today's episode I am joined by Keith Gray. Keith currently is an expert in instructional design and dangerous goods, running his own business covering both areas. In his career he has spent almost 13 years with the FTA (Freight Transport Association) building and then heading up their training department. Keith shares amazing insights about training.

I really enjoyed interviewing Keith and it has delivered a fantastic episode so do enjoy.

The 6 areas we discuss are;

  1. How a trade association works

  2. The Training Budget – statutory vs non-statutory training (inc. quasi statutory)

  3. A Transport Manager’s professional development – beyond TM CPC

  4. Instructional Design principles – why thinking often trumps doing when it comes to designing content

  5. the beauty of Lifelong learning - see book recommendations below!

  6. DGSA Academy

Book recommendations are;

Obliquity by John Kay – really interesting book from renowned economist about how life’s goals are best approached indirectly.

The Essential Drucker by Peter Drucker – the Grandfather of management consultancy and a very sharp mind. Many of his original concepts (SMART / management by objectives) have been so embedded into business as usual that we have long forgot the origin.

21 Letters on Life and Its Challenges by Charles Handy – Although his books are about organisational dynamics, he’s really a philosopher at heart. His books are beautifully written - accessible but you also feel like you’ve learned something on every page.

The Second Curve by Charles Handy – yes, chucked another in. He makes you stand back with him and shows you a different view on the accepted principles of society and life in general.

Business Model Generation by Alex Ostewalder – This became an instant business classic on strategy when it came out. It takes a look at how different business models work (and what specifically makes them work). The ‘canvas’ in there is really useful as a lens for your own business.

Good to Great by Jim Collins – perhaps a bit dated when you look at the case studies but another good one about business principles.

Design for How People Learn by Julie Dirksen – a good primer on Instructional Design

2022 promises to be a challenging year for all Fleet Operators in the UK, in this RUSHcast I discuss the predictions for fleet operators, from myself and some of my colleagues.

The suggestions include; James and Kirk @ RoadRadar & Flare;

  1. Vehicles will become ‘smarter’ in order to increase safety and reduce ongoing costs associated with insurance or incidents. It would be great to understand the loss of a vehicle or driver today vs just a few years ago and the impact to the business.

  2. Operational costs will continue to increase – fuel, driver demand, etc will continue to put a squeeze on fleet operators

Flagship's Compliance Guy; Jamie B

LST’s to be given the go ahead- Longer Semi Trailer trailers have been on trial for the last 9 years. The trial involves longer semi-trailers of 14.6 metres and 15.65 metres in length (17.5 metres and 18.55 metres total vehicle lengths respectively)

More focus on alternative fuels and electrification. Hydrogen internal combustion engines could also become the solution for longer haul tractors and I think there will be more breakthroughs in that area of development in 2022.

More clean air zones planned. Bradford and Manchester are already planning to start in 2022 but more cities I’m sure will follow when they see how much money that they could make.

Flagship's Training Guy Mike V

Covid, or rather the government's reaction to Covid isn't over yet and I foresee more restrictions coming in January which will be lockdown by the back door (and without the Furlough) which will be challenging times for the training industry as it will inevitably lead to smaller classes and people canceling training through the fear factor. Couple this with staff shortages due to self isolation within the transport sector, January could be bleak indeed. The perfect storm of DCPC training being put back because of Covid, and the belief in some transport managers that the government's review of DCPC could possible scrap it (it won't as it's not even being considered as an option) leading them to delay training bookings coupled with the onrushing 2024 will lead to a tsunami of demand for DCPC training in the latter half of 2022. Unless the political landscape changes the winter of 2022 could be a repeat of the last two with uncertainty about lockdown and restrictions returning.

The government's conclusion of its review of DCPC training is due in March. I doubt much will change except for the inclusion of more online content and possibly placing more activities 'out of scope'

The scrapping of the requirement for B license holders to take an additional test to tow a trailer of over 750kgs while bad from a road safety point of view will provide an opportunity to training providers as companies realise that although legally not mandated the risk of allowing untrained drivers loose is too great and they voluntarily take training on. This I believe will lead to a general awareness of the value of training in the sub 3.5t category. Van and fleet products will be in demand.

Fuel prices will continue to rise further squeezing operators margins and upping the pace for electric vehicles. Training topics that will begin to appear in 2022 will be the inclusion of EV awareness and safety.

The conclusion of another government consultation is due mid year. This one is the tri-annual review into the workings of the Office of the Traffic Commissioner. I don't think much will change but expect to see a more approachable and open communication opportunity from the TC's.

The TC's are reviewing the syllabus and qualification of TMCPC itself. We don't expect too many changes although the industry is keen to move back to a National/International mix. I suspect that would be too political and would need a legislation change away from the current EU compliant version but it's one to watch. Although the value of the International exam may diminish there would be, in training terms, an opportunity for more people to take a plunge and sit a National qualification.

From April 2022 there will be a requirement for vans over 2.5t being operated for hire and reward internationally to be included on an international operators license. This affects hardly any UK operators but will at least increase the awareness in van operations and give van operators an insight into the direction of travel in terms of upcoming regulation of that sector. Oh and Pompey will get promoted to the Championship in May !

In this episode we explore what the prosed HGV Driving Licence changes look like. It’s important to note that the changes below are only proposed changes currently and a consultation took place on these proposed changes between 10 August until 7 September 2021. The results from the consultation are due within the next three months of 2021.

There are three proposed main changes, and these are summarised below.

Change 1: removing the current staging requirements for licence acquisition Basically, a car driver will be able to apply for a provisional for both C and CE entitlement at the same time. A driver can then choose which test to take first. If they decide to go straight to take a test in an articulated lorry and then pass, they would be granted the following entitlements – C+E, C, C1 and C1+E.

Change 2: considering alternative arrangements for the conduct of the reversing manoeuvres. This proposed change allows the reversing part of the test to be conducted and assessed by a third party, this will free up time for the examiners to be able to add more tests to their daily schedule. The third party will also conduct the trailer coupling and un-coupling assessment.

Change 3: allow car drivers to tow a trailer without the need for an additional test This will allow drivers who passed their car test after January 1997 to be able to tow a trailer up to 3500kg although, MAM for car and trailer must not exceed 7000kg, Those who passed their test prior to January 1997 already have this entitlement on their licences. (B+E)

6 BS 'rules' that are actually misconceptions in Transport

In the sector there is some longstanding BS that is commonly held as true but absolutely isn't. So in this session I will discuss what I think they are and why I think they are wrong.   I'll discuss why the below 'rules' are actually BS; 1) Experienced Drivers don't need training 2) 7 hours Driver CPC!?! 3) You need 40 years experience in the Sector to reach the peak 4) The best Drivers make the best Transport Managers 5) You're not a 'proper' driver if you've never driven an Eaton Twin Splitter! 6) You're not a proper Transport Manager if you can't strip and rebuild a gearbox!   All the above are rubbish, but rubbish I see regularly on Social Media!

In this episode I catch up with my old colleague and friend Andy Page; he has worked in finance man and boy, which is a pretty long time I think! ;-)

It was great fun working with Andy, we poke a bit of fun at each other whilst Andy shares some awesome insights on asset finance too.

This one really isn't to be missed so listen in today!

Andy's Linked In bio states;

'Broad career in the development of both regulated and unregulated automotive and asset financing and related services delivered through traditional and online distribution channels.

Experience in developing and managing business flows in new markets, the development and delivery of new product offers, growth of both own and dealer partner referred business and delivery of additional compliant services and training for delivery associates.

A flair for designing and delivering bespoke funding solutions across a wide range of asset types and customers from Multinational board level to sole proprietor. An interest and involvement in Fintech currently fostering concepts in new funding methods.

I have the ambition to use my experience to be an innovation leader in the asset finance industry, to meet customers’ changing needs, enhance competitive advantage and grow their business.

I will achieve this by developing solutions that deliver an exceptional customer experience, respond to changing business models and meet the demands of today’s changing environment.

Financing is undergoing a revolution with customers wanting 24/7 access to services, their own data and the integration of telematics to drive usage based pricing. Open source banking will also simplify and greatly expedite the delivery of the credit decision process.

I have fostered offers in some of these areas to enable forward thinking businesses to adapt to these opportunities. I am also available to support lenders transition to fully directly connect with their customers on line and take advantage of Open source participation to see what benefits and cost savings that can bring to funders and their customers.'

Andy is a great guy and I am sure you will enjoy this episode too. See you all next time, thanks for coming.

PQ – Partnering Intelligence

The concept of Partnering Intelligence can be attributed to work by Steve Dent in the 1990’s and outlined in his book ‘Partnering Intelligence: Creating Value for Your Business by Building Smart Alliances’.

Partnering Intelligence is based on six elements that make up a behaviour-based system that results in an environment conducive to building trust and creating mutual beneficial relationships. It is important to be ‘fluent and fluid’ in all six attributes in order to reap the benefits since the six elements build on and reinforce each other. The six elements are

Trust: The foundation of all relationships. Without trust, there is no communication. Without trust there is no win-win. Trust is the basis for all healthy and productive relationships.

Win-Win Orientation: The ability to resolve interpersonal conflicts and solve problems using win-win strategies.

Self-Disclosure and Feedback: A clear and constant exchange of information and feelings.

Comfort with Interdependence: The ability to relinquish control and include others in the decision-making process and rely on them for the completion of tasks.

Comfort with Change: The ability to do different things and do things differently, in addition to adapting to your partner’s changing needs.

Future Orientation: Working together toward a common vision and set of goals based on a plan that is mutually developed and agreed upon.

Ben is owner of Radmore Farm shop est 2006 and is brilliantly funny, emerging stand up comic. Enjoy his half dozen, will 7 things actually below;

  1. Decide what you deem successful (money/lifestyle/being your own boss etc) and be realistic. Success is different depending on who you are.

  2. Learning good delegation skills and gaining the right staff/help - and deciding when you “don’t” need people.

  3. Doing what you want, not what someone else wants

  4. Thrive under pressure and preparation for working very hard. You have to prepare to change all the time (almost daily) and according to what’s happening. These could be huge changes- complete “U turns”

  5. Don’t take things personally, let things go

  6. Control of the money and bills

  7. What “to give up”. Being able know and “Getting rid of the dead wood” is a huge part of success.

An experienced business coach with a specialist offering across many key industries providing solutions to organisations based on their individual requirements. Insightful, creative and passionate, Dyfrig partners with organisations, establishes target objectives and creates a roadmap for end to end delivery and evaluation.

Dyfrig has led operational teams and Learning & Development functions, so has first-hand experience of the pressures and rewards of leading in business. He has the ability to work at operational, tactical and strategic levels, influencing stakeholders up to board level.

Dyfrig's half dozen things are;

  1. Be clear on WHY you are doing what you are doing
  2. What do you want to get out of it personally and professionally? Why? What will it give you? Independence, autonomy, more opportunity to make a difference - a comfortable retirement?

  3. When clear on your Why….Business is about technical competence and management - but if you want to be a leader, you have to learn to lead (self-employed or employed)

  4. Before, we relied on Knowledge and Skills, as a leader its helpful / essential to focus on Behaviours, Judgement and Perception

  5. 70 businesses an hour are created in the UK - but 29% go under in Yr1 and 60% go under by Yr3, much due to a lack of managerial competence and understanding what it takes to be an effective leader

  6. There are hundreds of quotes about leadership and many explanations - leaders today do need to think role modelling the behaviours their want to see developing EQ, learn about accountability, authenticity, humility, confidence, being able to inspire and influence through positivity and 'can do'.

  7. Surround yourself with the best people available - at a price you can afford

  8. You probably deserve the place you've worked hard to get

  9. Leaders (those who are stepping up, or who have been in role a while) need to draw on all their skills, but we all have areas that we are not so good at. So ask for help and advice (it can often cost nothing) from people you know and trust; or pay for services such as finance, marketing, HR when you need too

  10. This will allow you to focus on doing what you are good at - your 'Why'

  11. Employ the best people you can, not just the first ones you find. The best companies have the best people, you might not be able to pay a huge salary, but it has to be competitive - and remember great people don't just work for a salary

  12. Remember that you can employ great people on contacts / part time - too, be creative

  13. Be Customer Centric

  14. Your business or organisation is nothing without customers - know who your ideal customers are then go out and get them

  15. 2020 survey suggest that 25.9% of customers prefer excellent service, even if it means paying more. 59.9% of customers want a balance of price and service. 14.2% of customers prefer no frills service

  16. Today's customers want a great experience (all touch points) They want you handle complaints well, they want you to care about them, they want you to be ethical, they want to know they can trust you

  17. Be willing to adapt to changing customer needs and expectations - if you won't they'll just go somewhere else - customers aren't always loyal

  18. You won't get it right all of the time, but it's critical to learn from what you do well and where you are failing.

  19. Communicate

  20. Communication is about receiving information and transmitting it. Listening is a more difficult skill than talking

  21. A 2019 survey suggest that up to 2/3 of 1,000 people would consider leaving their employer based on poor communication alone

  22. Listen to your customers, your people, your suppliers and others. Ask for feedback - even though you might not like what you hear or read

  23. Talk and engage people; tell stories, share your vision, your standards, successes and frustrations. Engage and role model excellence.

  24. For leaders who spend all day in meetings / in their office, get out more and be present. It can be more important and productive

  25. Learn to develop yourself and others

  26. The book by Marshal Goldsmith ‘What got you here, won't get you there’ talks about unconscious annoying habits

  27. It's easy for leaders to be absorbed in the day to day operation, it's common for leaders to think there isn't time formal or informal learning

  28. Successful leaders have mentors / coaches, critical friends willing to support / challenge

  29. Successful leaders are the ones who are working on their business, not just in it

  30. Learning is often difficult and it often takes time. We spent years in formal education, we might have then gone to College or University, but what has happened since?

  31. “The best investment you can make is in yourself. The more you learn, the more you earn” Warren Buffett (net worth $88 billion)

  32. If we stop learning and improving our knowledge skills and behaviours, we aren't plateauing, we are declining when compared to peers and our competitors

  33. You people need to be constantly development too. How robust are your induction processes? How to you measure performance? How do you help your people succeed (not fail)?

  34. As your business grows, you will need to delegate work to others, if they are not capable of doing the work, you won't ever be able to let anything go - a major failing of leaders and you'll end up doing it all. And there aren't enough hours in the day for that.

  35. Be flexible

  36. A recent survey stated that up to 62% of employees were willing to leave their employer based on its flexibility

  37. Some people might think this may be influenced by Millennials and their need for a more progressive workplace, however in this report; of the people willing to leave their employer, 21% were Millennials and 31% were Baby Boomers

  38. Our experience in 2020 has shown us is that Flexibility can happen in many businesses and organisations. Some people can't wait to go back to the traditional way of working, some will want to date and home and in between there will be many variations. This could work better for you as a leader and for your people too

  39. Flexibility isn't just about working processes and practices, it's a mindset - be open to change, being open to changing your mind

Those Half Dozen things we discuss are; goal setting, resilience, adaptability, great communication skills, focus, Esprit De corps - creating a fantastic culture in your people and finally Jem insisted we add a 7th thing to his a half dozen things. His final piece of advice is ......to be daring!

I had loads of insight speaking to Jem and he is such an awesome person too. I really hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did making it!
