In this weeks episode, Anna is speaking with author Matt Abrahams, about his new book Think Faster, Talk Smarter.

Many of us dread having to convey our ideas to others, often feeling ill-equipped, anxious, and awkward. Public speaking experts help by focusing on planned communication experiences such as slide presentations, pitches, or formal talks. Yet, most of our professional and personal communication occurs in spontaneous situations that creep up on us and all too often leave us flustered and stumbling for words. How can we rise to the occasion and shine when we’re put on the spot?

In Think Faster, Talk Smarter, Stanford lecturer, podcast host, and communication expert Matt Abrahams provides tangible, actionable skills to help even the most anxious of speakers succeed when speaking spontaneously. Abrahams provides science-based strategies for managing anxiety, responding to the mood of the room, and making content concise, relevant, compelling, and memorable. Drawing on stories from his clients and students, he offers best practices for navigating Q&A sessions, shining in job interviews, providing effective feedback, making small talk, fixing faux pas, persuading others, and handling other impromptu speaking tasks.

Whether it’s a prospective client asking you an unexpected question during a meeting or all eyes turning to you at a dinner party, you’ll know how to navigate the situation like a pro and bring out your very best. Think Faster, Talk Smarter is an accessible guide to communication that will help you master new techniques in no time.

What an interesting conversation!

Janani is a founder, creative director, spiritual entrepreneur. Having received a ‘traditional’ degree in Finance and English to appease the expectations of her Indian parents, Janani always knew her true passion was in creating.

She started @By.Janani as a creative outlet for her own mental health and spiritual journey in 2020, as a result of years of suffering with depression and self harm.

Janani found that when she was vulnerable with her followers on social media, her audience loudly resonated with her thoughts & feelings. From here she was led down a path of self-discovery, growth, & the finding of a unique community.

Thus sharing her personal healing journey on her Instagram & Tik Tok pages, sharing other’s stories through her magazine The Indian Standard, Janani’s purpose now is to inspire others to heal themselves and become confident in being the operant power of their reality.

Tapping into various processes like Subconscious Reprogramming, spirituality, Law of Assumption, and Hinduism in her work, Janani has created a space that allows all genders, and all people to feel self - acceptance, encourage self-trust, confidence, and ultimately, lead their lives with love.

My guest on the podcast this week is Dr. Sean Sullivan.

Dr. Sean Sullivan is a licensed clinical psychologist and founder and CEO of OnePerfect, an enterprise mental health and wellness platform that delivers personalized mindset ’shifting’ experiences called Shifts.

Dr. Sullivan began his formal psychology education at Harvard University and completed it with a psychology residency at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center and postdoctoral training based at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He has since been featured extensively in national and international publications including The New York Times, Forbes, and Huffington Post, to name a few.

Dr. Sullivan’s clinical research focuses on applying technology to improve mental health — particularly by teaching anyone how to shift their state of mind on demand. As a psychotherapist for over twenty years, he also wrote popular psychology books and articles and created countless digital mental health, wellness, and peak performance psychology courses, apps, tools, and virtual reality (VR) treatments.

Based on researching the impact of teaching his patients how to strategically shift their state of mind in a few minutes anytime (i.e. ‘shifting’), Dr. Sullivan developed Shift TherapyTM to guide anyone through shifting into a better state of mind from their smartphone in under 10 minutes anytime.

Demonstrating a major endorsement for shifting, the Regents of University of California approved piloting Shifts at University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) during the pandemic. After two years of successful pilots, UCSC’s Health Center subscribed their entire 20,000+ member community to receive Shifts in 2023.

Dr. Sullivan believes teaching ‘shifting’ is the best way to address the massive US and worldwide mental health and unhappiness crisis we currently face and would love to introduce the concept to your audience.

This week's guest is Dr. Rachel Goldsmith Turow.

This was an easy conversation as Dr. Rachel and I think and practice in similar ways.

Rachel Goldsmith Turow, Ph.D., is a psychotherapist, research scientist, mindfulness and compassion teacher, and an adjunct faculty member at Seattle University and at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Dr. Turow’s work explores the connections among attention, self-criticism, stressful life experiences, and mental health.

She is the author of The Self-Talk Workout: Six Science-Backed Strategies to Dissolve Self-Criticism and Transform the Voice in Your Head (Shambhala), and Mindfulness Skills for Trauma and PTSD: Practices for Recovery and Resilience (Norton) along with over 30 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters.

Over the years, Dr. Turow noted that many of the strategies that help trauma survivors can also build emotional well-being more generally. In particular, Dr. Turow observed (and later researched) that reducing self-criticism improved people's anxiety, traumatic stress, and depression. After several decades of observing the benefits of mindfulness, self-compassion, and cognitive behavioral practices, both for herself and among her patients and students, Dr. Turow now teaches specific mental techniques that decrease self-criticism and cultivate self-encouragement.

Dr. Turow teaches three "science and practice" Psychology courses at Seattle University: Mindfulness Skills, Developing Compassion, and Building Resilience. In each course, students practice new mental skills and other behaviors while also learning about scientific research studies related to each technique. In collaboration with her colleagues at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Dr. Turow also provides training in sensitive practice to healthcare workers serving cancer patients who are also survivors of sexual violence. She has led mindfulness, compassion, and resilience workshops nationally for audiences ranging from university and high school educators to active military personnel.

Tim and I are talking about the ever-important role of shadow work.

Shadow work comes from the reknown psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Carl Jung.

Dr. Jung taught that, in order to evolve and grown deeper in our knowledg and love of our selves, then we must go inside and look at the parts of us we try to keep hidden. This is the Shadow.

The shadow is the unconscious aspects of ourselves, including our repressed emotions, our negative personality traits, and past traumas which can and do effect our everyday, present lives.

As a clinician,  I employ shadow work with my clients as I know how beneficial and essential this work is...of moving us into a place of deeper sense of peace and contentment with ourselves.

Listen as Tim and I talk about our own shadows and the work we have done to accept them and incorporate them into our lives.

Our country has been enveloped by the horrible tragedy and murder of 4 college students in Idaho, Moscow.

While loosely following the case in November and then paying more attention in December, when the murderer had not been found, my mind kept going to the trauma and grief of the family members, friends, school peers, the first responders and the people of Moscow, Idaho.

I could not stop thinking about, praying for, and hoping they are all receiving trauma care.

Enter today's guest: Clinical Forensic Therapist, Cathy Cassidy.

Together we talk about Primary and Secondary Trauma, Intuition, Resilience and Self Care.

I first discovered Cathy on Tiktok, where she has been posting quite a bit of helpful information on the Idaho case, the investigation, and trauma.

Cathy specializes in sex crimes and mood disorders.

Cathy has two master's degrees, one in Counseling Psychology and another in Forensic Psychology. She has a long work history of working in psychiatry as well in the Department of Corrections. Presently Cathy maintains a private practice.

Cathy has a podcast on Spotify and Apple called: True Crime: Predators and have a YouTube channel called: Sexual Abuse Topics with Cathy Cassidy, Clinical/Forensic Therapist where she attempts to educate the public on signs and symptoms of sexual abuse and how to handle it as a care giver. This week Tim and I are joined by 4 out of 5 of our kids.

We've been talking about doing a show around our experience with raising step-kids. Together we have 5.

And this year we have 4 of them home for the holidays and we thought what better than to have our own kids come on the podcast and talk about what it has been like from theirperspective.

I was pleasantly surprised at how everyone said "sure, I'll come on the podcast and talk about my experience...."

But then I became a little nervous, too!

This was an honest, vulnerable, and at times, emotional, family conversation about what it has been like for all of us.

It's one habit change at a time.

In this episode Tim and I talk about how Covid threw millions of us off our structured pre-pandemic routines.

And now that we are moving past lockdowns and life is looking more like pre-2020, many of us are still struggling with getting back into a routine that works for us. One that we can feel good about.

My guest this week is badass Rebecca Saunders.

At 22, Rebecca packed a small bag and booked a one-way ticket to Sydney with her laptop and just $500 in her pocket as she boarded that plane. With little money but determined to make her new hometown work, Rebecca did whatever she could to make ends meet, and after a year of rejection letters and polite ‘No’s’, Rebecca discovered the only way for her to stay and get her Permanent Residency was if she started her own business and sponsor herself. And so, her production company, Deli Agency was born, signing global networking behemoth, LinkedIn as its first client.

Fast forward a decade and her production company operates worldwide across Australia, New Zealand, UK and the USA. When Covid hit, Rebecca had 100% of her production clients cancel. Her revenue hit zero and she told her staff she was closing the business, for good. But Rebecca knew, once again, failure wasn’t an option, instead she transformed her business and hit the 7 figure mark for the first time! In a truly incredible coming of age tale, the pandemic turned out not to be purely just a professional success for Rebecca - after 25 years wearing a wig she decided that she was ready to reveal herself to the world, live an authentic life and lean into her own uniqueness! Her next powerful step is helping fellow videographers get business savvy, earn more money and make bigger profits.

Colette Beyer is back on the podcast talking about how to feel and be empowered in this day and age of concern around personal safety.

Check out episode #65 with Colette as she discusses how to develop Situational Awareness.

Colette Beyer is the founder and chief evangelist of X2, a human potential accelerator empowering female athletes and veterans to channel their innate drive to become winning entrepreneurs.

Colette is a lifelong combat sports practitioner and endurance athlete who pedaled 3,900 miles across the United States on a bicycle without training (which she highly does NOT recommended).

After the age of 30, she traded her lucrative career in political communications to serve in law enforcement. While serving, she became obsessed with studying high performance lifestyles and reverse engineering the success mindset, habits and routines of the world’s top 2% of women in business and sport.

X2 was born out of Colette’s personal desire to find a new mission and purpose after leaving law enforcement. She quickly identified that female veterans and athletes also struggled to find their way after retiring from service and competition, respectively, often turning to drugs and alcohol as a result.

Colette believes that female athletes and veterans possess special qualities that set them ahead of other entrepreneurs, including an innate drive to win, strong work ethic and a can’t quit, won’t quit attitude. After seven years and

thousands of hours of research, she arrived at a simple, yet

transformative framework designed to create clarity for female athletes and veterans seeking to leave a legacy as entrepreneurs.

I am back with a solo episode talking about the importance of taking care of ourselves not just physically but emotionally and psychologically.

Self care is something that can "fly" by as we get caught up in the busy-ness of our lives...we forget to check in and then we end up, in some cases, burning out.

I know. This happened to me a few weeks ago.

And also in this mini episode I talk about the importance of doing your own inner child work. If the narrative in your head is keeping you stuck, then look within and pay attention to your thoughts.

Many of us have "noise" from our past. Inner child work allows us to move up and out of the past.

Caveat: If you are experiencing traumatic memories this requires the work of a licensed therapist. Please reach out to a therapist who specializes in trauma work.

In this week's episode I am discussing the different levels of mental health care.

I am so often asked for assistance in helping clients/friends understand how to know when increase a family member's level of psychotherapeutic/psychiatric care.

How those in the mental health profession, in general, think about services for individuals.

When do we think a person needs a "higher level of care" and what that looks like.

I'm speaking in generalities, as each individual is looked at on a case by case. However, this conversation ought to help you understand what the different levels of mental health care are.

My guest is one badass!
