The Museum of Lost Sounds. Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937), the godfather of radio technology, believed that sound never dies ... it just gets weaker and weaker to the point where we can no longer detect it with our ears. Any sound could, in theory, be recovered. Any sound from any time in the past. A lost sound could be heard again with the right equipment… a powerful equipment…
In fact, all sounds are lost sounds... to the moment someone can hear them... The construction of a Museum of Lost Sounds promotes the perpetuation of a community's personal and collective memories, of the creative potential of memory... The soundscape built by the biophonies, geophonies and anthropophonies of a territory... and the silent world...

In this episode we will listen to Idalina Gameiro from the village of Penha Garcia, in Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal. Idalina is the voice you hear in the beginning of this podcast.
Her memories of Catarina Chitas and the moment when she realized she had to learn and sing… Idalina remembers that day… Catarina Chitas was no longer lucid and was “singing the lá lá lá song, in a loop,” It had a tremendous impact on Idalina…
Catarina Chitas - or Ti Chitas as she was known - was born in Penha Garcia in 1913 and died in 2003. Her voice is in the national collective memory after the first recordings by ethnographers Ernesto Veiga de Oliveira and Benjamim Pereira, in 1963.
We also hear another song… A lady came to Idalina’s grocery store and shared a new song she remembered the previous night… "I really like talking to the old ladies" says Idalina…

“Here from Penha Garcia, Catarina Chitas speaks. She is a person who has no studies at all. I was raised outside, keeping cattle, keeping everything, keeping goats, and pigs, and cows. And working, mowing, harvesting the wheat, weeding, doing everything. This is my wisdom. Now, since then, I've been a cook, I've been a baker, I've been a weaver, everything has passed through my hands. Only school studies I never had. ”

For episode 1 we will listen to Josefina Pissarra, 85, from the village of Penha Garcia, in Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal.
In the 30s and 40s of the 20th century people did not eat meat, they did not have it to eat. But on Carnival Day, the pig was killed and they made what they called “o jantar da carne” (the meat dinner). Carnival Day, in the 30s and 40s, was the only day of the year when the people of Penha Garcia ate the same thing. A festive day.
At another time of the year, one of the traditions of Easter and All Saints' day was the ”Bica dos afilhados”. The bread that was eaten in the village was rye bread - wheat was rare in the region of Idanha-a-Nova - and the “Bica” - a flat round bread made with olive oil - was wheat. The godmothers made this bread that they distributed to their godchildren… “It had a meaning”, said Josefina.
