Michelle spoke with Shannon Russell about reinvention, especially for women navigating career and life transitions. Shannon shared her own path from 16 years in television production to entrepreneurship, coaching, and writing, and explained how to approach change as a purposeful “second act” rather than a loss.
About Shannon Former television producer with a 16-year career in TV * Transitioned after becoming a mom * Founder of multiple businesses * Author of Start Your Second Act* * Coaches women through career reinvention and entrepreneurship
Main Themes* Women often follow a “rules-based” path until life changes prompt reassessment * Career shifts can happen after motherhood, caregiving, burnout, layoffs, or simple restlessness * A non-linear path is not a failure — it’s a stepping stone * Reframing change as a new chapter or second act helps reduce fear
How to Know It’s Time for a Change* Ask: Why am I considering this move? * Identify what about the next step is exciting * Notice whether your current role still aligns with your values, life stage, and needs * Consider whether you’ll regret not making the change later
Practical Advice* Do your research before leaping * Learn the actual day-to-day of a new role or business * Talk to people in the field * Understand the financial realities * Keep early plans private until you feel confident * Start small if needed — a second act does not have to be a giant leap
Key TakeawayShannon encouraged listeners to stop waiting for the perfect time and instead move forward with clarity, curiosity, and confidence. Small steps, thoughtful research, and staying connected to your “why” can help make a new chapter feel possible.

Michelle spoke with John Cuddie, a retired HR professional with deep experience in school boards, about deferred salary leave plans — a structured way to save for a year off work. John shared how he used the program twice, what he did during his leaves, and why intentional pauses can be personally and professionally valuable.
About John* Spent 30+ years in HR with three school boards * Later worked as an employment advisor helping new immigrants and youth * Approves deferred salary leave plans as part of his HR background * Took two deferred salary leaves himself
What Is a Deferred Salary Leave?* A leave of absence funded by saving part of your salary in advance * Common structure: “four over five” + Work 4 years at 80% pay + 20% goes into a trust account + Take the 5th year off using those savings * Often includes pension/benefit considerations and a contractual return-to-work agreement
What John Did on His LeavesFirst Leave* Home projects: painting, purging, tidying * Family travel to India and Dubai * Trips with kids to Broadway/New York and a ski holiday
Second Leave* More household and personal tasks * Significant time supporting a close friend going through cancer treatment * Some travel as well
Main Takeaways* A year off can be invigorating * It can also be humbling — work continues without you * Time away helps people see they are not their job * It creates balance and makes room for other forms of contribution
What Holds People Back* Financial concerns about living on reduced salary * Uncertainty about what the future may hold over a 4–5 year planning period * Family changes, life changes, and possible cancellation of plans
Planning Considerations* Budget carefully * Think through staffing and who will cover your role * Consider family and partner dynamics * Balance practical tasks with rest, fun, travel, and connection * Use the time to invest in what matters most
Practical Advice/Next Steps for you* Start by talking to your employer or boss * Ask your payroll department about the details * Review CRA guidance on tax implications * Be ready to discuss staffing and return-to-work planning

Michelle spoke with Lori Stephenson, a career coach and leadership developer, about how to navigate life's transitions with curiosity and courage. Drawing on her own career pivot and years of coaching experience, Lori shared practical tools for self-reflection, reframing fear, and taking meaningful action toward change.
About Lori* Founder of My Big Sky — supports students, mid-career professionals, and those approaching retirement * Background in leadership development, career coaching, and career transition * Former communications and talent development professional at Accenture * Coaches individuals on self-awareness, career direction, and how to lead others
Key ThemesKnowing Yourself Before Making a MoveLori encouraged people to dig into three core areas before pursuing change:
Self-Reflection Questions to Get Started* What were my peak moments over the last 10–15 years — what was I doing, who was I with? * What energizes me? What do I dread? * What do people continually thank me or recognize me for? * How do I want to contribute? * What am I putting off or waiting for — and do I really have to wait?
Practical Tools* Do a peaks and valleys exercise across your career * Write everything down — get it out of your head and onto paper * Use AI or psychometric tools to help spot patterns you might miss * Look for non-negotiables — things you will never compromise on again * Pick one small action, give it a deadline, and find someone to hold you accountable
On Fear and DiscomfortLori referenced the work of Susan David (Emotional Agility):
"Discomfort is the price of admission to a meaningful life."
Moving from Thinking to Action Stop waiting to have it all figured out * Go from big thinking → distilled insights → one concrete step * Connect with people in person — buy someone a coffee, ask questions, get out of your own world * Ask yourself: If time, money, and approval weren't factors, what would I be doing?*
Lori's Personal StoryAfter 10 years at Accenture, Lori felt misaligned and burned out. She proactively put herself on a restructuring list, took 12–18 months to recover and reflect, and used that time to discover her passion for career coaching. She describes it as one of her proudest decisions — and proof that you don't need to have the full plan before you take the first step.

Michelle spoke with Ashley Beatty, a matrescence educator and motherhood coach, about the profound and often unacknowledged transformation women go through when they become mothers. The conversation explored a practical framework — the Matrescence Matrix — to help mothers understand their changes and make decisions that truly reflect who they are now, not who they were before.
About Ashley* Trained Matrescence Educator * Motherhood and Self-Development Coach * 20 years in education * Mom of two (ages 7 and 12) * Works with women navigating the transitions of motherhood across all areas of life
What is Matrescence?* The transition to and through motherhood — similar to adolescence * Not a one-time event — it is iterative and cyclical, recurring with each new stage of a child's development * Universal to all mothers, but unique in how it is experiencedby each individual * Largely undiscussed and unsupported, despite being a massive identity and life shift
The Matrescence MatrixDeveloped by Nikki McCahon; visualized as a pie chart with 8 domains
DomainWhat It CoversPhysicalBody changes through pregnancy, birth, and recoveryPsychologicalIdentity shifts, sense of self, emotional changesSocialHow "mom" is perceived and valued in your social circlesCulturalBroader societal views and expectations of motherhoodRelationshipsChanges to partnerships, friendships, and family dynamicsCareerShifting priorities, career interruptions, work-life alignmentSpiritualLegacy, values, religion, purposeEconomicFinancial impact of maternity leave, career pauses, childcare costsHow to Use the Matrix1. Map your changes — on the pie chart, mark how much you've shifted in each domain (outer edge = most change, center = least) 2. Identify what feels "prickly" — those areas likely signal a misalignment with your current values 3. Explore your values — acknowledge that values shift through motherhood and that's okay 4. Make decisions from that place — rather than defaulting to pre-motherhood expectations or external pressure
Key Themes Duality is valid — "I want to grow my business AND be present with my kids" — both can be true * Matrescence is cyclical — hard seasons are followed by growth; decisions made now don't have to be permanent * Shame and guilt often stem from unacknowledged changes rubbing up against outdated expectations * You can't "have it all" in every season — the matrix helps prioritize what matters right now*

Michelle spoke with Carli Fink, a certified career development practitioner, about the realities of non-linear careers, why people still idealize linear ones, and how to make smart, strategic career transitions. The conversation also made a compelling case for adult gap years as a tool for career exploration and self-discovery.
About Carli* Certified Career Development Practitioner * Runs Foreseeable Futures — a career counseling practice focused on non-linear careers * Also works part-time for a consulting company and teaches career classes at a university * Originally trained as a K-12 teacher; her own career has spanned student life, academic advising, career counselling, and workforce development
Benefits of a Non-Linear Career1. Personal fulfillment — careers that served you at 25 may not serve you at 45; transitions allow you to meet evolving needs 2. Resilience and adaptability — diverse experience protects against labor market shocks 3. Transferable skills — the same advice we give young people (keep doors open, diversify experience) applies throughout your entire career
It's Not Too Late — Reframing Career Age* Working lives are getting longer (many now work into their 70s) * Someone in their late 30s may have 30+ more years of working life ahead * At that stage, you've barely entered the "adult chapter" of your career * Key message: Dreams don't have deadlines
Signs It May Be Time to Consider a Career Change* Consistently leaving work feeling drained and depleted * Noticing systematic issues with the industry or profession, not just a temporary rough patch * Feeling disengaged or going through the motions for an extended period * Dissatisfaction that isn't resolved by seasonal changes or minor adjustments
Best Practices for Making a Career Transition1. Diagnose the Problem Correctly* Track when feelings of frustration or disengagement arise * Is it specific tasks? Certain people? Structural conditions of the industry? * Fixing the wrong problem leads to the same dissatisfaction in a new role
The Adult Gap Year Connection* An adult gap year is essentially an extended prototyping opportunity * Provides time and space for self-exploration that full-time employment rarely allows * Can be used to: + Explore new career paths + Develop new competencies + Test interests in a hands-on way + Return to a former employer with clarity — or transition into something new * Organizational sabbaticals, extended leave, or deferred pay plans can all create this opportunity
Key Quotes
"It's hard to fix the problem if you don't know what it is.""You can prototype things before you actually jump in a big way.""Working lives are getting longer — you may be much younger in your career than you realize."Resources & Links* 💼 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carlifink/

TakeawayNon-linear careers are not a consolation prize — they are an adaptive, fulfilling, and increasingly strategic way to navigate a changing world of work. Whether you're 28 or 58, it is never too late to reconsider your path, and an adult gap year can be a powerful tool to make that transition thoughtfully and intentionally.

Charles Achampong joined Michelle to share the story of how his family took a year-long trip around the world. What began as a seed of an idea on his honeymoon in Rio de Janeiro became a 10-year plan that ultimately transformed his family's relationships, perspectives, and approach to life.
About Charles Husband and father of two girls (ages 9 and 12) * 20+ years across public, private, non-profit, and philanthropic sectors * Focuses on helping communities solve complex problems * Now speaks and writes about the power of pausing and intentional living * Author of Around the World in Family Days*
How It Started* His wife planted the seed on their honeymoon — a dream to take their future family around the world * Became a 10-year financial and logistical plan * The pandemic reinforced their decision — life is short, and waiting isn't guaranteed * Originally planned as an African safari for her 40th birthday; evolved into a full world trip
Key Barriers They Faced* Financial fear — shifting from scarcity mindset to values-based decision making * Logistics overwhelm — schooling, travel routes, work; most were solvable * Illusion of readiness — there is no perfect moment; you have to interrupt life yourself * Identity — letting go of titles, productivity, and career momentum * Execution reality — fatigue, missed flights, sibling arguments; growth comes from friction
Values-Based Decision Making Most pre-trip decisions were default decisions, not deliberate ones * The gap year forced the question: What do we value enough to reorganize our lives around?* * Key family values identified: + Quality time together before kids become teenagers + Exposing children to the world beyond the classroom + Living in alignment, not just in stability * Practical exercise suggested: + Review your last 3 months of calendar — where is your time going? + Review your last 3 months of bank/credit card statements — where is your money going? + Do these reflect your actual values?
Advice for Others* "Don't wait until life forces you to pause — practice choosing a pause intentionally." * You don't need a full year; even micro-sabbaticals create meaningful disruption * The goal is disruption of routine, not just duration * Get honest about what's really holding you back — it's usually fear, not logistics * Involve your kids (or family) in the planning process

What if taking time off wasn’t a setback, but the smartest move you could make? In this episode, Michelle Dittmer of the Canadian Gap Year Association sits down with Danica Nelson, founder of Liberty Leave, to talk about adult gap years, career breaks, and why intentional pauses matter at every stage of life. Danica shares how burnout led her to negotiate six months away from work, travel through Southeast Asia, and completely rethink her path. Together, they explore financial planning, mindset, navigating hard conversations, and how a well-designed break can help you realign with your values, energy, and goals.
3 Key Takeaways* A Liberty Leave is about alignment, not escape. Danica explains that a career break is not just about resting—it is about stepping off autopilot and making more intentional life and work choices. * Planning makes the break possible. From her 4P framework to her “freedom formula,” Danica shows how practical steps like budgeting, saving, and creative income planning can turn the idea of a break into a realistic plan. * You do not take a break to come back harder. One of Danica’s biggest lessons is that rest should not be used to fuel more burnout. The real goal is building a life that feels sustainable, joyful, and true to you.

New years always bring up conversations about resolutions, goal setting and milestones that you will accomplish in the year, like beginning your post-secondary journey.
However, those wanting to start a gap year this year, may experience the complex emotions of guilt and shame, which is brought about by family culture, peer pressure, societal norms and your very own inner critic for not pursuing post-secondary right after high school.
Often, family may think that there is a highway to success and because you are considering a gap year, it’s a detour.
Guilt, shame and self-doubt are very powerful emotions and we need to acknowledge when they surface for us.
In this episode, Michelle shares her tips on how to navigate these feelings and ultimately learn to let them pass through you and to live in a space of joy.

When you’re making a decision, there’s often a few ways you gather information before moving forward.
Like doing your own research, weighing the decision on your own, and seeking the opinions of others.
Asking mom. Asking dad. Asking friends and asking influencers. And when we say “influencer”, we’re not talking about the YouTube or Instagram influencers you follow, we’re talking about the everyday people in your life that you know and trust.
However, the opinions, or shall we say biases, we seek out from others are often based on the context of the decision we have to make.
For example, who would you turn to before trying out a new hairstyle or new game? Who would you talk to if you wanted to adopt a dog? Or maybe a cat?
Now think: who are you seeking support from in making a decision about your post-secondary pathway? See how heavy that sits compared to a new hairstyle?
In this episode, Michelle shares why it’s important to be intentional about who you ask for an opinion, and consider the lived experiences and biases of these individuals. She also covers a few common scenarios you may be facing in your post-secondary decision making process, and how to ensure you’re making an informed decision that works for YOU.
Psst: Guidance counselors! This episode is for you, too!

Natalia joins Michelle on the podcast to share the AuPair experience as the Marketing Coordinator at AuPair in America, connecting young adults across the world to AuPair opportunities in the United States.
So, what exactly is an AuPair?
An AuPair is an individual who travels to a different country and lives with a host family as a child-care provider. AuPair, meaning “On Par”, or equal to, isn’t just about being the babysitter or nanny, it’s about becoming a part of a host family and exploring a different culture and country.

There is so much going on right now that it can feel overwhelming.
The weight of realizing how much help the world needs can feel very heavy. There’s no denying that.
But it’s also inspiring. People across the world are coming together to march. More people are putting on masks when in public. Donations are pouring in from coast to coast for different causes. People are inspired to do better, to make things better, because of what they are hearing and listening to. People are finding a purpose.
By finding a purpose throughout everything going on, it can help you feel more fulfilled and more in control of what’s going on as you contribute. You may not see change overnight, but you are contributing.
One way to channel your purpose is to commit to a singular project. A passion project is a purposeful project that will allow you to feel fulfilled by making a contribution to something.
But with so much happening, how do you pick one area to focus? Nobody expects you to do everything, so this is a great way to get you focused. If you’re not sure where to start, here are four steps to implementing a passion project. Anti-Racism Statement Passion Project Template Gap Year Certification

Right now families are coming closer to the deadline for making post-secondary decisions but most are lacking critical information as to what the post-secondary experience will actually be. Yes, there will be classes and profs and learning but will it be on campus? On line? Will there be residence? There are many unknown factors that will significantly contribute to your university experience. So how can we make decisions without the information? We need to rely on our values, because unlike the situation, they will likely not change.

My heart goes out to all of the 2020 graduating classes. These are my people. This is who I serve on a good day – folks who don’t know what the best steps forward are, students who want more time to figure things out, or people who feel they need a unique experience before diving into post-secondary. With the way things are trending within education and COVID-19, my prediction is that many people who were part of the 2020 graduating class will be taking gap years, but for a whole new set of reasons.
While I don’t have a crystal ball to see how everything will play out in the future, I am aware of how families are struggling with the loss of senior year right now. I know how hard it can be to find the right way to support your graduate, so I’ve put together five tips to help you get your kid through this challenging time.

Ikigai is an ancient philosophy from Okinawa, Japan. It encourages all people to live your "life's worth" – studies show that the pillars of Ikigai support overall wellbeing. Each person has an Ikigai that, once understood, will enhance daily life and personal fulfillment.
James spent his gap year working in hospitality and retail while taking the time to shift his focus into finding a pathway forward. He shares how his high school self wasn’t serious about academics and how his gap year helped him to mature, made him more ready for a college education.
He doesn’t have everything figured out – his gap year wasn’t a silver bullet. However, he learned how to move himself forward, to value education and ruled out some career pathways. Take a listen.
Gap Years aren’t all about travel. Despite what Instagram and media coverage of a-list celebrities and royalty might tell you, most Canadians don’t spend their entire gap year traveling. They will usually spend between 2 weeks and 3 months traveling. If we use an average of 5 weeks over the course of a 62 week gap year (beginning of July to end of August the following year), that makes up only 8% of the gap year! What do you do with the other time? What do you do if you can’t or don’t want to travel?
It is very important to know that if you can’t travel, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take a gap year. I can almost guarantee that there was more than simply the idea of travel that made you consider taking a gap year. Don’t forget those reasons - do you need to get more clarity on direction? Need to make money? Need to recharge your battery? Want to learn more about how the real world works? ALL of this can be done without traveling and this blog shares some ideas on how to plan a travel-free gap year.

Looking forward to an experience for a long time builds up such great excitement and anticipation! You’ve worked to earn enough money to pay for it, built up the confidence to leave home for another country, and developed skills to excel at life outside of your hometown all for these changes to your plan to come out of nowhere.
That is a huge reason as to why this change in plans is so devastating. This blog and Gap Year Podcast episode are here to help you work through the feelings that come up and provide some advice on how to move through the negative emotions into more optimistic actions.
We hope you find this helpful in a time of such emotion, stress and global uncertainty.
After being removed from it for a little bit of time, we can forget how many major stressors and transitions happen in the late teenage years. Beyond just the physical and hormonal growth, there are huge social changes that come with the transition out of childhood then into adolescence and into early adulthood. They are all tremendous leaps in one’s life! No wonder it can feel like we’re all on a roller coaster.
Jane Kristoffy is an educational strategist, educator of over 25 years and mother of teens – so she knows all about what is happening in the schools, in post-secondary, and at home during periods of transitions.
This week on the Gap Year Podcast, I discussed some of the major reasons people choose to take a gap year with Jane. Although everyone can benefit from a gap year, we both see several reasons why people choose to take this time away from formal education.
I love to talk about this topic because it is one that keeps parents and teens up at night.
Parents often approach me saying “my kid isn’t mature enough”, “they aren’t going to be ready” or “they just need some more time”. Students say similar things – saying they need more time, they aren’t ready, or they don’t know what they want to do. I hear these concerns on a regular basis and they all boil down to one common theme – not feeling ready.
This episode explores "readiness" and which factors indicate a gap year, and which can be addressed in other ways.
Lynn Trevesan is a mother of two girls, now 18 and 15 years old. But when her oldest daughter was reaching the end of high school, Lynne noticed that she wasn’t quite ready for post-secondary, despite being mature for her age and identified as a gifted student throughout her studies. As an engineer who has had multiple jobs in multiple industries over her career, Lynn knew that taking different paths would only enrich her daughter’s life journey.
While you’re probably looking forward to what your gap year has in store, there’s probably still some nerves about things you don’t know yet. Will you get into my university program after my gap year? Do you have the skills to travel? Is it going to be weird to be going back to school when I am a year older than everybody else?
Grace weighs in on all of these questions in this week’s podcast.
Grace is a current University of Toronto Student studying Biodiversity and Conservation. She spent many of her summers working at camp, where she found her passion for the outdoors. With the support of her family, she deferred her acceptance and spent the majority of her gap year working at a restaurant before venturing to Europe for some exploring.
Grace speaks about the transition from being a student to working – the freedom of not having homework, the exposure to new peers of all different ages and life experience, as well as a taste of what “adult life” is all about.
What does Grace want people planning a gap year to know?
As cheesy as it sounds, Grace did “find herself” on her gap year. She learned so much from traveling, being alone, and being in a slower environment. She started her first year of university more confident, independent confident in her ability to make new friends.
Her top advice for students in grade 12? To commit and absolutely do it, and not to let FOMO get in the way. It may seem like you’ll miss out on the university experience, but you’ll have the same experience a year later – plus, you’ll have all your amazing gap year experience under your belt as well.
Pretty cool, eh?

Everywhere I go, I hear incredible stories about gap years.
Whenever I’m at different fairs or conferences, people come up to me to tell me how great their gap year was. I can’t count the amount of times I hear, “I took a gap year, and it was the best decision I could have made.” And this hasn’t happened once or twice – it happens all the time. While they always rave about the different things they did, they always come back to how it helped them to grow and learn in ways that formal education couldn’t have.
I hear these amazing stories all the time, and I just wished there was a way to capture them and share with people who are considering a gap year – which is where this podcast came in! I am so excited to share all of these stories, along with the tips and tricks to make your gap year meaningful.
I often get asked about what sparked my passion for the gap year pathway as an option. I started out my career as a high school science teacher but left the classroom soon after. Teaching in a classroom wasn’t the right fit for me – I saw that students needed space for experiential learning, reflection, and support in defining who they are and who they want to be as they make the transition into adulthood. That’s where gap year comes in. It helps students get into the driver’s seat of their own lives – professionally, personally and in relationships.
Now more than ever, youth are getting involved in the different issues we are facing in today’s world – and with so much going on, it can make things seem scary. Taking the time during a gap year to gain some perspective, realize the gifts and talents that they have to contribute to the world, and aligning them with passions and meaningful ways of contributing to society will lead to a stronger future for humanity and for the individual.
But if gap years are so valuable, why haven’t they caught on in Canada?
While working with gap families for over a decade, I’ve listened intently to the objections of families and have some answers to that very question.
The American Dream – We are still living in the false-reality of previous generations. The idea that “the harder you work, the faster you go, the more successful you will be, the sooner you will be successful” is still part of our everyday narrative, even if it’s inaccurate. Therefore any deviation on the ‘fastrack’ has a stigma attached to it. It can be falsely seen as being lazy, not good enough to go on, or wealthy enough to go on wild, expensive adventures.
A Strong Education System – Canada has one of the top educational systems in the world. Our colleges and universities are world-renowned, with lots of power, money and international influence. This prestigious status of Canadian higher education, paired with how fiercely students are recruited for post-secondary schools while still early in high school, drive the narrative that taking a path that isn’t direct into university or college is less valuable.
Lack of Information – Guidance counselors, teachers and parents have not been supplied with accurate and helpful information on the gap year pathway, so many rely on their lived experience. Educators need to have a university education so, by no fault of their own, they are influenced by their lived experience. This will shift as more educators and parents are informed on the gap year pathway
Canada is Safe – If we live in such a safe and great country, why would we ever leave it? With gap years being so deeply linked with travel, this is a common objection to the gap year path. In Canada, we don’t have the same level of social challenges as many other countries for the most part. On the other hand, because we have it so good in Canada, travelling to new places can seem daunting. Travel also isn’t as commonplace in Canada, as compared to somewhere like Europe. Our country is so big that it makes local travel less popular – as well as the skills that are gained from stepping outside your comfort zone and into a new province or country. This lack of confidence in travel can also keep people from gap years.
In short, this podcast will help Canadians gain confidence and knowledge about their decision to take a gap year. By telling more stories and sharing ways to make gap years easier, the more meaningful this podcast will become in helping individuals and families start to shift the overall conversation about gap years.
Mission of the Canadian Gap Year Association:
The Canadian Gap Year Association (CanGap) is a registered non-profit organization filling a gap: support for young people looking for an alternative step in educational and/or career pathways through taking a gap year.
Our mission is to build a healthier, happier, more resilient and experienced Canadian youth population by connecting families with the resources they need to have purposeful gap years.
Our resources include online and in-person events, connection to gap year and youth-specific programs and activities, a recognition program, and knowledge and expertise for all those connected to gap years.
We achieve this through professional collaborations with passionate and qualified professionals in secondary and post-secondary education, travel, volunteering, personal and professional development, and government.
Families who engage with us and apply the best practices of purposeful gap years will see the young adult emerge with more confidence and independence, more awareness of their talents and passions and more driven to use these to contribute to society.
