Child Find refers to the federal requirement under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that all children in need of special education services are identified, located and evaluated. “When a child is drowning, don’t teach him how to swim.” -Gary Landreth
Guidelines when setting limits:
-Limits are not punitive
-Deliver the limit calmly
-It is up to the child decide if they will obey the set limits
-Parents must consistently implement the limits
Criteria for when limits are needed:
-Is this necessary?
-Can I consistently enforce this limit?
-If I don’t set this limit, can I allow this behavior to happen consistently?
How to set limits (ACT):
Acknowledge the feeling
Communicate the limit
Target the alternative

Prior to her work with LENA, she served as a teacher, non-profit leader, K-8 school founder, and education consultant. She’s dedicated her career to expelling inequities in education to ensure all children are granted an unlimited life of opportunity, and she's now proud to do that through the power of early talk.

-Nearly half of all children under the age of 8 have their own tablet.
-Children under 8 years old spend an average of 2 hours per day on screens (not including TV).
-Children between 8-18 spend 7.5 hours a day on screens.
Effects of too much screen time in children: behavioral problems, lack of sleep, increase in childhood obesity, increased violence, developmental delays, phantom swiping, and screen addiction.
Benefits of less screen time in children: increased creativity in children, better behavior, stronger family bonds, and developmental progress in kids.

In this episode Jack and Lindsay talk with the Mesquite ISD's Coordinator for Elementary Language Arts, Andrea Bailey, about the free ReadPlayTalk Parenting Classes that are being offered by Mesquite ISD Community Education this spring.
In episode 13, Jack and Lindsay chat with ReadPlayTalk Community Board Member and founder of Puzzle Piece Kids, Natalie Evans. With Natalie’s speech pathology background, we talk about the importance of “talk” for a child and what consistent conversation does for them emotionally and mentally. The mission of Puzzle Piece Kids is to enhance the lives of children and teens by helping them find their voice and giving them the confidence to use it. PPK's speech therapy prepares children and teens to successfully participate within their home, school, and community. Children learn so much from their parents and from conversations in general. Through talk, kids gain the confidence that they need to express themselves. This empowers them to go into the community and communicate with the different individuals that they come into contact with. The importance of talk can be communicated simply by leading by example. Talking with children allows for both parties to ENGAGE in conversation. Asking questions encourages back and forth conversations. Mesquite ISD will be introducing LENA Start to the Mesquite community in the summer of 2021! LENA Start focuses on the language development of a child by teaching and empowering parents to better communicate with their child. “Play is the young child’s natural language.” - Dr. Audrey Robinson
“Play is often talked about as if it were relief from serious learning, but for kids it IS serious learning.” -Mr. Rogers
Dr. Robinsons recommends at least once a week for 30 minutes have a designated play team, and allow the child to lead during that time.
“I think it’s really important for kids to be able to play by themselves… they don’t always need to be entertained by a TV, tablet, or a device, or a sibling or a parent. We need our kids to look inside themselves and be able to come up with ways to entertain themselves and then later on that play builds that skill of problem solving too.” -Dr. Audrey Robinson
“Playing doesn’t always equal out to something symbolic, even if it looks like that on the surface.” - Dr. Audrey Robinson
Three things that you can pay attention to when your child plays:
- Repetition: How much your child is playing out a specific task or scenario over and over.
- Intensity: Notice when there are changes in the way that your child plays.
- Context: Playing out a scenario similar to an experience that he/she has had.
