The Destination Angler podcast is THE podcast for anglers who travel. We go to the source, the local guides & experts, to build your knowledge of top fishing locations around North America.
Our destination is the legendary South Fork of the Snake River, a world-famous Blue-Ribbon fishery in eastern Idaho. Joining me is Sage Unsworth, regional fisheries biologist, expert angler, and fifth-gen Idahoan, who gives us the skinny on the South Fork from top to bottom covering the top sections anglers need to know about, selective trout strategies, and the science behind fish counts. Also, the controversial rainbow trout management program to conserve Yellowstone cutthroat, stories of squirrel-induced starvation, the dos and don’ts of fish handling, and why you can’t be a jerk as a fisheries biologist.

Our destination is Abell Ranch, a 1,500-acre slice of trout heaven on Colorado’s South Platte River with former guide and fifth-generation Coloradan, Clint Packo, who just might have the coolest job around: running Abell, restoring trout streams, and brokering some of the West’s most iconic ranches.
Abell is known for its three miles of gin-clear water, rare solitude, and some of the best hopper fishing in the state. Along the way, we tackle big questions—like how do you design a trout stream? And who drops $38 million on a ranch…and actually makes it work? Stick around to the end for a wild story involving a tarpon, a blacktip shark, and a few unexpected cartwheels.

Our destination is the fabled Smith River with Evan Youngblood, Livingston, Montana. The Smith is a remote, permit-only float in central Montana that offers fly anglers a truly unforgettable multi-day experience. Winding through a stunning limestone canyon, the river holds healthy populations of eager wild brown and rainbow trout.
Evan unravels the mysteries of fly fishing success on the Smith and explains why anglers covet an opportunity to float this remote 59-mile beauty. A great storyteller, Evan regales us with tales of stack mends, groover duty, and peregrine falcons as only a seasoned guide could tell.

Our destination is the Berry Islands in the Bahamas for trophy bonefish and permit with guides Percy Darville, Freddie Dames, Travis Sands, and Soul Fly Lodge owner Kyle Schaefer. The Berry Islands are known for miles and miles of undisturbed, beautiful sand flats, large fish, and plenty of solitude.
About our guests, 28 years ago, Freddie worked on a lobster boat for weeks at a time until his wife had enough and switched to a fly-fishing skiff. Travis’s high school principal let him skip school to become a fly fishing guide. As an early pioneer of Bahamian fly fishing 58 years ago, Percy was the only guide around who would take fly anglers fishing. With over 100 years of experience between them, our guests share tips on big fish behavior, ideal conditions, and why the Berry Islands can be a demanding place to fish, in a good way.

Scott was born and raised in Sheridan playing sports, hunting, and fishing in the Bighorn Mountains. He soon became obsessed with fly fishing, spending 250 to 300 days a year on the water. After a stint in an open pit coal mine, Scott ditched the hard had for a fly rod to guide full-time on the Bighorn.
Today Scott gives us the rundown on the world-renowned tailwater in Montana, the canyons of Thermopolis, and the headwaters in the Wind River Range. Plus, best wade sections, stories of close calls with rattlesnakes, and a guide story so gross you’ll hate to love it.

Our destination is the world-famous Grey Reef on the North Platte River with Blake Jackson, co-owner of the Ugly Bug Fly Shop, Casper Wyoming. Grey Reef is one of the great tail waters of the west, offering a 70-mile western fly fishing experience with oversized, football-shaped wild trout, and plenty of solitude where 50 fish days are common.
Blake grew up in Wyoming doing what Wyoming kids do – hunting, fishing, and playing sports. After college, he quickly realized a fly-fishing guide could not afford to live in Bozeman and returned to Wyoming, where he now co-owns the fly shop.
Today, we explore the Reef, Miracle Mile, and Fremon Canyon and the conservation story behind the trophy fly fishing here, plus slow-it-down streamer techniques, local fly patterns, stories from Mongolia, Wyoming elk hunting, naked customers, and why you need to cast to the center of the stream.

Today we have a special edition of the Destination Angler Podcast on a very important issue affecting our cold-water fisheries – climate change. Like many of you, over the past few years, I’ve been watching the news and hearing more and more about our climate. No matter where you stand on man-made or natural, it’s hard to ignore things seem to be warming up, especially this past summer, which was the hottest summer on record.
As I began to look into this I came across a report on the Impact of Global Warming on Trout in the Interior West that 50% of cutthroat trout habitat will be gone by 2080 if nothing is done. Can you imagine a world where half of our Cutthroat trout habitat is gone?
To help us better understand climate change, our guests are Helen Neville, Senior Scientist, and Sara Porterfield, Water Policy Associate with Trout Unlimited. We debunk fact from fiction, the impact of our warming climate on our cold-water fisheries, and most importantly what we can do about it.

Our destination is the hallowed grounds of the Beaverkill River in the Catskills Mountains just a few hours north of New York City. Our guest is expert fly designer and guide, Joe Rist, owner of Trout Town Flies, Roscoe, NY. Considered the birthplace of American dry fly fishing, the Beaverkill is often called “the most celebrated trout stream in America”. And for good reason. It’s a freestone river, steeped in history with an incredible diversity of hatches, known for highly selective trout, creating some of the best technical dry fly fishing in the east.
Joe is a 3rd generation angler who has spent most of his life plying these waters and developing creative and effective patterns that are deadly when those standard fly patterns just aren’t fooling trout anymore. Stick around for the back half of the show as Joe gives us the low down on the Beaverkill from top to bottom and a master class in fly tying and technical fly-fishing skills.

Our destination is Taos, New Mexico, and the pristine Rio Grande River. Our guest is expert fly angler and guide, Nick Streit, owner of Taos Fly Shop. The Rio Grande is a rugged and unpressured river as it flows through the gorge just outside of Taos, NW. A great numbers fishery, the Rio Grande is designated one of America’s Wild and Scenic Rivers where 50 to 100 fish days are possible.
Nick got into the family business at an early age, guiding before he could even drive. By the age of 17, he was a member of the U.S. fly fishing team that took second place in the World Championships in Wales, of all places. In 2004 Nick re-opened the Taos Fly Shop originally started by his dad back in the early 1980s. Nick also enjoys photography and his work has been featured in publications such as Southwest Fly Fishing and New Mexico Magazine.
So strap on your hiking boots if you love solitude, incredible scenery, and a physical challenge, cause we're going deep into the Rio Grande gorge. And be sure to listen to the very end cause Nick shares some great advice on what he calls “fishing deliberately” to improve catch rates.

Our destination is the Cumberland River tailwater near Jamestown, Kentucky. Our guest is expert fly fishing guide Hagan Wonn, owner of Cumberland Troutfitters. Known around Lexington as the kid with “a fishing problem”, Hagan started guiding clients with an Old Town Canoe and shares some funny stories about that. Our destination is Fernie, BC, and the famed Elk River with expert fly angler and guide, Spencer Schey, Kootenay Fly Shop. The Elk is a classic Cutthroat freestone stream deep in the heart of BC, known for drop-dead, gorgeous scenery, and miles and miles of pristine, wadable water. Word has it, the dry fly fishing is so good that nymphing is a four-letter word. And if you like to mix it up, the Bull Trout fishing is pretty darn spectacular as well.
Spencer covers the Elk from top to bottom and makes the case for why a 3x tippet and a non-slip loop knot is THE way to go for chasing “snotty” Cutts in gin clear water. And with a nickname like Mountain Pig, Spencer is just the guide for off-the-beaten-path angling opportunities. One thing’s for sure, you’ll get a kick out of Spencer!
