Prof. John Lowe is an Associate Professor of Sanskrit in the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford. He talks to Hussain about how he became interested in language development, and how he came to study Sanskrit language and linguistics. He discusses the way language is so powerful, and the way written language can preserve older things, can prevent change or can undo change. Prof. Adia Benton is a cultural anthropologist whose research focuses on global health, biomedicine and development/humanitarianism. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Northwestern University. Dr. George Kunnath is a social anthropologist and a Research Fellow at the International Inequalities Institute at the London School of Economics. Rita Astuti is an expert of the anthropology of Madagascar. Her writings, based on extensive fieldwork conducted since the late 80s, have been about kinship, personhood, gender, group identity and belief.
In this episode Rita sheds light on her exploration of the Vezo people. Discussing the concept of identity, Rita expressed how identity is defined in a unique way by the Vezo people. To be a Vezo you don't necessarily have to be ethnically related, rather if you perfect the role of a fisherman you are one of them!

What is the condition of Uyghur Muslims in China?
Professor Rachel Harris is a lecturer at SOAS university where she specialises in the department of Music, school of Arts. Her research is centred on China and Central Asia, especially on the Uyghurs.
In this episode Rachel shares with us her experience with Uyghur Muslims during her fieldwork in Xinjiang. Rachel sheds light on the spiritual rituals performed by the Uyghurs which have affected her emotionally. A very close bond was built with the Uyghurs during her stay. We also delved into the oppression that Uyghurs face today. The discussion took an objective stance with host Hussain Ayed, as many factors were put into place. For example, the reports of thousands of Uyghurs joining ISIS in Iraq and Syria certainly played a role on the current stance of the Chinese government. Nonetheless, millions are not responsible for the actions of a few thousand.

My guest on this episode is Professor Kerry Brown of Kings College London. Kerry is a former British diplomat in China and the author of more than 10 books on matters relating to the Eastern Superpower. He is also the director of the Lau China institute. Kerry has a very unique and insightful perspective on matters relating to the relationship the western world has with China. Specifically, he sheds light on the various possibilities of cooperation and partnership with China as opposed to the prickly standoff that is happening currently. We discuss, amongst many other things, the impact of such differing cultures on attitudes.

Amongst other things in this project, Peter maps out the social background, patronage and lineage of the Jaina mendicants Peter shares with me insights into the Jaina lifestyle, core beliefs and the somewhat paradoxical networks of merchants that have carried this religion throughout history. Andrew most notably worked on developing and authoring the translation of The Epic of Gilgamesh - which is the oldest poem known to man. His translation to date has sold a remarkable 250,000 copies. But what is more fascinating about Andrew’s work is how much in depth research he has done on the original tablets that date back several thousand years. This episode is one full of amazing stories of the past. Andrew gives us his insights on the Epic of Gilgamesh and what it means to us as humans when faced with the reality that we are mortal beings!

In particular, my guest Dr. Alex Baratta shed light on how accents can impact teachers training in the UK. Alex is lecturer in language, linguistics and communication at Manchester University.
As we all know, different regions in the UK have different accents. But teachers are seldom allowed to embrace their local accents when teaching local students. Alex gives us some insights on this issue he’s been researching for quite some time.

My guest in this episode is Dr. Alf Coles who is an academic in mathematics education at Bristol University. Maths has for such a long time been either a love it or hate it kind of relationship. I’m sure we all have this idea that you’re either a numbers person or you’re not. But Alf dispels this myth in this episode. Having worked as a maths teacher then as a researcher into how maths is taught, Alf has some remarkable insights. One that stood out to me was how the use of imagery in maths in primary school can be quite confusing for students as they get into secondary! I definitely recommend this episode to everyone who has been afraid of maths in the past and those of you with children of school age.

My guest today is Dr. Vally Lytra from Goldsmiths University of London. She is a senior lecturer in education, where her research focus is on bilingualism and biliteracy. For somebody like myself who has grown up bilingual, and for many of our listeners, this episode resonates quite deeply. Vally shares some of her thoughts and ideas on harnessing the mother tongue to improve the education experience. This of course has not been the way of thinking for many communities of migrants. For a long time it wasn’t uncommon to hear people advise against using the mother tongue of the family at home in order to strengthen their English or the language of the country where they reside.
