Ivan sails to South Africa and South America... a world away from Hackney and Austerity . There's an unfortunate incident involving Crepes Suzette.. and he meets "Esmerelda" a beautiful, rich young Brazilian girl...
Ivan starts work as a saloon boy and steward, sailing to South Africa. Hard work, the waiter known as Mabel, and drag shows in the crew bar.
1953 continued : more jobs, and Ivan signs up for sea school aged 16 - dreaming of exotic foreign travel. His parents are not happy.
1945--1953. Peacetime. Life in a prefab, arrival of a baby brother, getting into Grammar School.... and bunking off. First business - as a teenage entrepreneur, and first, short-lived, jobs.

The Family Courts can barely cope with the volume of new care cases - brought by local authorities seeking to take children away from their families. It's a crisis - say both incoming and outgoing Presidents of the Family Division. Yet there is dramatic variation between local authorities, as illustrated by research by Professor Andy Bilson, who tracked two cohorts of children, using FOI. He found that in Southampton, a child born in 2011-12 was twelve times more likely to be adopted by the age of 5, than a child born in Greenwich. Sanchia Berg reports .

In 2010, Bill Malone travelled from his home in Australia to London, to hear Gordon Brown apologise for the child migrant policy that ruined his life. He'd been a bright pupil at St George's Enfield, but had been sent to Bindoon in Western Australia. His education was halted, he was repeatedly sexually abused. I took him back to his old London school, to meet some of the pupils. He told me then that an apology wasn't enough - former child migrants should have compensation. Today the IICSA has said that's what they should have.
