Rainn Wilson as most of you know played one of the most socially iconic television characters of the last decade or two.

I mean, who doesn’t know The Office or the guy he played, Dwight Schrute. That role helped transform Rainn into a globally recognized and lauded actor, however if you didn’t know, he represents a ‘bit’ more than that.

For example, even before his rise to fame on The Office, he was in a bunch of notable films and TV shows like Almost Famous, HBOs Six Feet Under amongst others. Post The Office he has been a busy guy.

However, the biggest takeaway you may derive about Rainn from my conversation with him is just how spiritual he is.

In fact his latest book, 'Soul Boom, Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution' is what we based our conversation around.

We had this great philosophical discussion about life, living and of course careers.

We went big picture (pie in the sky if you will) to look at things like his thoughts on:

*why we need spirituality within our work

*how and why becoming more spiritually evolved can really help us achieve much greater personal fulfillment and ultimate success

*what we need for happiness and fulfillment in our lives

*his struggles in his career even when he was seemingly on top of the world (he makes a statement on that which may surprise some)

Also worth noting and not to worry, I did manage to slide in one direct The Office question about Dwight that you won’t want to miss.

All up, I think people are really going to enjoy this conversation for both the deepness of it all, but also the breaks of levity throughout.

I know I came away refreshed and equipped with some new ways of considering all things life, living and beyond.

I hope this chat will come to represent something similar to you too.

Faded Glory: This lakeside community is perhaps best-known for its past, with that being the famous Crystal Beach Amusement Park, which operated on the shores of Lake Erie for 100 years before closing in 1989.

Once the symbol of the village of Crystal Beach, the park’s closing took with it, its hundreds of thousands of tourists from all across the province and south of the border, along with hundreds of jobs. Unfortunately, all of this ushered in significant community transformation one would consider far from desirable.

A Vision of Revitalization: Phil, however, despite witnessing all of this, never doubted that Crystal Beach was an amazing place to live. Resultantly, he has been devoting the better part of his personal and professional efforts towards revitalizing the beach.

Visions Becoming Reality: This all started with visions of more; more for the community and more for the area. These accomplishments Phil has been part of have been built on determination, hard work and a vision for what can be, rather than what was.

This talk will be a treat for anyone with a dream to do more and see things through. The conversation overflows with charmed sentiment and inspiration stemming from a lot of hard work, dedication and perseverance in seeing a community reborn.

Join host Christopher Schoenwald of the Podcast, “LIFE AS A..” as he chats with renowned and widely respected climate crisis expert Svein Tveitdal.

Introducing

Svein Tveitdal is a Norwegian based Climate Crisis Expert and Former UN Environment Programme Director as well as environmental ambassador to the Norwegian city of Arendal.

He is also the founder and CEO of Klima2020, an environmental consultancy based in Norway which is centred on lecturing and advising businesses and local authorities that want to position themselves alongside and within this Green Shift that is beginning to take shape.

His organization places a particular focus is on bridging the gap between climate science, policy makers and the general public.

Skills & Background

His background, experiences and professional engagement reads off much like a climate activist highlight reel. Let me bring you up to speed on some of those said activities.

*Owner and CEO of the aforementioned consultancy, Klima 2020

*Former Assistant Executive Director, (UNEP) United Nations Environment Program where he was responsible for the Division for Policy Implementation and the Division for Environmental Conventions including the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) secretariat. He was also the Polar advisor to the Executive Director.

*Former managing Director UNEP/GRID- (Global Resource Information Database) which the UN used to bridge the knowledge gap between climate scientists, policymakers and the public. Svein set up the fifth global center for GRID in Arendal, Norway

*Board Chairman and participation for the likes of the Norwegian Rainforest Foundation, Climate Point AS, Climate Compensation Fund, PurityIT (Green IT provider), The Energy Farm International Foundation, and NORFUND (Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries).

These are a mere sampling of his board level activities with truthfully too many others to list

Currently, his present activities include lecturing, writing and participation in the public debate on global climate where he has morphed into a true global social influencer on this issue.

Make no mistake though, all of this illustrates the passion, drive and determination he has had towards doing his part to ensure that we as planetary caretakers, are doing the right things to ensure a sustainable existence.

Global Social Influencer on Climate Change

In fact, he has amassed a base of over 320,000 faithful and engaged Twitter followers who look to Svein for the most up to date and relevant social commentary covering the climate crisis.

Published Works

Finally, Svein has authored respected publications centred on this notion of raising awareness and spurring action towards tackling climate change issues. These publications include “Climate in Peril” (2010) a Popular guide to the IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)and “Green Shift” (2013) A handbook for environmentally friendly regions in Europe.

Reasons to Listen

In Svein’s career and professional experiences, he has seen and heard it all when it comes to climate change discussion and discourse. Resultantly, his insights carry much weight when deciphering between the progress we have made and what we are still clearly failing at.

In this talk, Svein shares his deep concern about our current plight brought on by our outward prioritization of the now over the future when it comes to taking meaningful action and actually doing something meaningful to head off this crisis we are currently faced with.

That being said, he also shares many ideas about what can still be done if we can align our own values on micro scale and work them up to macro level actions and initiatives.

Svein’s blend of experience of data, insight and experiences hit hard and fast but that is exactly what we need as far facing the realities of climate change. I would encourage all listeners to tune in to this rich discussion.

He was also founder and COO of a US and Philippines-based non-profit disaster response company, specialising in typhoon-resistant construction on remote islands. Mayer is a lifelong traveller and lover of new languages, of which he has studied six.

Now all of that is impressive unto itself however this is where things get really interesting.

A World’s First Endeavour Mayer is co-founder of Let’s Buy an Island, a world’s first project of its kind which used crowdfunding to purchase an actual island.

In 2019, a group of investors lead by Marshall banded together to make the crowdfunded island purchase ($180,000 plus tax) of Coffee Caye, a 1.2- acre, uninhabited island off the coast of Belize.

Aside from the crowd funded purchase being unique, this project also represents an unusual nation-building project too with Coffee Caye being reconstituted as the “Principality of Islandia,” complete with its own national flag, anthem and government.

In fact, through a small donation, you too can become an official citizen of Islandia.

While Coffee Caye still remains under recognized laws, borders and restrictions of Belize, unofficially to some, it has become the world’s newest “micronation”.

Worldwide Media Coverage To date, this venture and story has been covered and devoured by readers from major news outlets and publications, not limited to the likes of CNN, New York Magazine, Lonely Planet, Mirror and Telemundo amongst others.

Reasons to Listen Marshall explains this crowdfunded island purchase in its entirety including the reasoning for this business venture, hopes and aspirations for the project moving forward, as well as what it all means to him on a personal level.

Not only that, Marshall accomplishes all of the above in a highly entertaining manner through the mixing in of story, humour and facts which will undoubtedly leave listeners in an island breezy relaxed state! 😉

For those who have ever dreamt about owning an island —and really, who hasn’t?!–this is an episode you will truly enjoy from start to finish.

Think back twenty years. Heck, go back further if you can. Try fifty, or a hundred. What is one thing that has been part of our collective human experience? Any guesses?

Well, I’m thinking media. For example, the radio broadcasting of music and talk intended to reach a dispersed audience started experimentally between 1905 and 1906.

Sure, it has changed—especially in recent times. However, at its core broadcasting has always been about communicating ideas, news and events often based around things like politics, entertainment, arts and science and so on.

We’re all in for a treat today. Joining todays program is a guest who has built a phenomenal career in public broadcast and journalism. He is someone that will help us pull back the curtain on this profession.

Introducing Adam Walsh is the host and producer of the CBC show CrossTalk, a lunch time provincial radio program in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The show is a virtual town square where people meet to be informed, engaged and entertained.

A show that meets people in both their digital and actual neighbourhoods. A program that reflects contemporary Newfoundland and Labrador by serving the basic purpose of modern public broadcasting: building community by bringing people together and helping them understand one another and the world around them.

He’s been with Canada’s CBC, Canada’s public broadcaster, for over 10 years.

Awards In 2014 Adam was part of a team that won the Atlantic Canada Journalism Gold Award Television Enterprise Reporting – for an investigation into the local renovation industry. Then, in 2015 he went to China after being awarded the Asia Pacific Foundation’s Media Fellowship to report on Canada’s attempts to move further into the Chinese seafood market.

Expat Life Later in 2015 he moved to Japan through a CBC agreement with Japanese public broadcaster NHK. Adam stayed in Japan working for NHK’s international English new program Newsline as an advising producer.

He also traveled all over Japan and elsewhere covering the anniversaries of the atomic bombings in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the anniversary of the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. Adam was also in Washington DC to cover Donald Trump’s inauguration.

CrossTalk In June of 2021, Adam started filling in as the host of CrossTalk and became its permanent host in October of that year.

Tune in to learn more about Adam’s fascinating takes on his own profession, including some of his more memorable experiences and stories.

Plus you’ll hear us chat more broadly about the role of public broadcasting in the past and why it’s importance has never been greater. Hear about all of this and more in this engaging talk.

With each passing year, the interconnectedness of our world including economies, markets, governments, businesses, human relationships and so on deepens.

Now, in a perfect world all of this seamlessly fits together. Well, we all know that is not reality. That is where my next guest fits in. He works in an industry in which he, for all intensive purposes could be considered a lubricant that helps this incredibly intricate and highly complex machine of life, living and work roll on.

Introducing Ricardo Rivera is a fully-fledged Japanese translator with his own business based in Hiroshima prefecture, Japan. After growing up in Sacramento, California and attending U.C. Berkeley, international living and working came a calling.

Ricardo’s track to translation however, could be traced to his early years of being born in Tucson, AZ near the border of Mexico, where many residents flip back and forth between Spanish and English. His first language was Spanish which eventually was supplanted by English.

His yearning to connect with his roots drove him in later years to learn Spanish more fluently where he studied literature in both English and Spanish at Berkley, which included literature, linguistics, history and even translation courses.

Japan Fast forward to his arrival in Japan in 2006 where his purview of the Japanese language and society at that point was limited to “sushi” and maybe the word “Arigato” (from the 80’s song “Mr. Roboto”).

This lack of basic knowledge drove Ricardo to delve into Japanese language study during his first few years in Japan. What captured his attention more than anything was the fact that the Japanese writing system and language as a whole, really offers no commonalities with English or Spanish. That challenge was refreshing, engrossing but quite difficult.

Gradually, his immersion into the culture through stints as an English language teacher and his enrollment into a proper Japanese language course, eventually lead Ricardo to attain the highest certification level relating to Japanese language proficiency.

This in turn, amounted to finding employment with a Japan based engineering firm within their international sales department, where his role was acting as a liaison between the company’s office and clients in the Silicon Valley.

Business Finally, those additional opportunities to further build his translation skills and abilities revealed a pathway to work as a freelance translator and then eventually his founding of his own translation and interpretation business, where he has been at it for nearly 15 years.

Tune in to learn more about Ricardo’s role within this fascinating industry. Hear about his life as a translator & interpreter through this engaging talk.

Toronto based Master Cake Illusionist April Julian — of the brand new Netflix series “Is it Cake?” has been dreaming up award-winning custom cakes and desserts since 2007.

April’s love for baking and visual arts began at an early age. Even before she was old enough to use an oven, she would fill her mother’s baking pans with hand towels and pretend they were freshly baked cakes. On Christmas or birthdays, art supplies were always on the top of her wish list.

It wasn’t until decades later when she saw master cake artist Ron Ben Israel demonstrating a sugar orchid on TV that she realized there was a way to combine her two greatest passions.

Since that chance discovery, April has trained under some of the greatest cake artists in the world, and honed her own unique style and artistry.

Her award-winning creations have been featured in a number of international publications including American Cake Decorating Magazine and Cake Craft and Decoration UK.

And now you can catch her on Netflix’s new show, “Is it Cake?” which combines foodie culture with a good old fashioned reality baking competition series.

The show is hosted by Saturday Night Live star Mikey Day, and has a panel of celebrity judges who will attempt to distinguish between hyper- realistic cakes and everyday objects.

Tune in to learn more about April’s artistry in producing hyperrealistic cakes. Plus hear about some her insights about being part of a burgeoning hit Netflix show!

Elka Parsons is the owner of Elk Wines, a family owned and operated winemaking operation in the Barossa Valley, Australia. Her mission involves perfecting each vintage in order to create exceptional wine that stands up to the best in the market.

Every Elk wine is handpicked from a single vineyard, representing only the best from the Barossa and Eden Valley Regions of Australia.

Varietal regionality sits at the core of Elk Wine’s boutique brand. Elk Wines uses natural, vegan-friendly techniques to produce outstanding quality wine which embodies the spirit of the Barossa Valley.

After many years in the airline industry, in spite of her love of travel and adventure, she had the sense that something was missing. It only took a gentle nudge and a fortuitous win at the track to literally turn her passion for wine into fruition.

After a weekend at the races in Melbourne, with a small win in hand, Elka returned to the Barossa with ‘lady luck’ on her side. She sourced the most spectacular Riesling fruit, and through skill and determination created their flagship – Elk Wines Eden Valley Riesling – and thus Elk Wines was born!

Recognising that providing something unique in a highly competitive industry requires ongoing learning and exploration, Elka combines her love of travel and learning by continuing to explore vineyards across the world and studying viticulture and Oenology at the University of Adelaide.

Tune in to learn more about Elka and the winemaking industry as a whole in this engaging talk.

In addition, we’re going to learn about what this word, “technology” means for someone who not only lives and breathes it, but also plays a key role in shaping it for companies and individuals like you and I.
