Over the next while you will get the episodes that we have had saved up for some time. We will also be wrapping up our Justice League International series and they will be the last recorded episodes we ever do. It has been a blast to bring you the podcast all these years. Thank you for listening all this time and we hope you enjoy these last episodes as they appear. For episode 115 we sat down and discussed Sci-Fi comics. This is actually a 2 parter as we didn’t talk about any licensed properties in this one. So in this episode it’s all about the science fiction comics that really tickled our fancy over the years. Originally recorded in March 2023Enjoy ☺To find out where to find, listen, contact us and buy our comics then please visitthatcomicsmell.comDon’t forget to Like, Share, Subscribe, Rate & Review. Most importantly… Read/Make More Comics! Thanks again for listening and supporting the podcast

We have been doing a Justice League International chat across a number of episodes and years now, selecting issues that make up the collected volumes but now we have come to the end of those collections with this final volume. That doesn’t mean we will be stopping OUR JLI volumes though. From now on we will just be covering what issues we think would make up the next collection. For now though, this episode is our continuation of Keith Giffen, J.M. Dematteis (Justice League America #31-35), Bart Sears & Adam Hughes (Justice League Europe #7-11) JLI series or the “BWAHAHA” Justice League as people now seem to know it. Kevin McGuire had long dropped off by this point having now even stopped on covers but will make one or two appearances in the future. This continues to be a source of pure joy and we really can’t wait to keep talking about these for years to come. This “JLI book club” is one of our favourite topics to do here on the pod and we hope you enjoy it.

First off we want to say a MASSIVE thank you to our guest on this episode. Our good buddy Tony Esmond came to visit us and took part in our MAD conversation and it was an absolute pleasure to have him here and see him again.

For those who don’t know, Tony is one third of the brilliant Awesome Comics Podcast and the host of the wonderful Never Iron Anything Comics Review Podcast/Website. He also, along with buddy/artist Adam Falp, runs and puts out comics through their new underground comics publisher Tribute Press.

We went completely MAD for this one. We take a look at paperbacks, magazines, comics, and everything in-between, around and involved with Mad Magazine and it’s legacy. There were gifts exchanged, some thoughts and a load of laughs.

We took this time to have a little comic swap/mart in the driveway of That Comic Smell’s home. It was one of the few times we had seen each other in person. Mike had been gifted various longboxes with A LOT of comics. They were predominantly DC titles and after we had met, had a good laugh and picked our way through them all, we went back home, read a bunch of them and discussed it over Skype. This is a little blast from the past and some things that are discussed may be long past now but it just gives us a little glimpse into a time where we were still trying our hardest to stay connected with friends and loved ones. It’s also where we got free comics and showed them off! For those who weren’t there for the first time ‘Intention Fails’ are comics that we bought with every intention of reading but have then sat on the shelf for some time, unread. So we take this time to pick 3 particular titles and attempt to read them in the year. We have done it for roughly 3-4 years now. Nando, on the other hand, reads his comics as soon as he gets them. SO for him, he was sharing his top reads of 2022. The rest of the gang did this also. Just as an added extra, we all brought along some comics that we got as gifts over the Christmas period. This was just a chance to show off. They say that “No one likes a show off” Well we love one in this case. This and all the usual comics chat on…That Comic Smell! To find out where to find, listen, contact us and buy our comics then please visitthatcomicsmell.comDon’t forget to Like, Share, Subscribe, Rate & Review. Most importantly… Read/Make More Comics! Thanks again for listening and supporting the podcastThe Incredible Hulk (Stan Lee, Jack Kirby)Millar & Pinchin (Leopold Maurer)Autobiographix (Various Dark Horse Creators)Day of the Triffids (John Wyndham)Middlewest (Skottie Young, Jorge Corona)Now (Fantagraphics)Mome (Fantagraphics)The Work of Lewis Trondheim We Told You So: Comics as Art (Tom Spurgeon, Michael Dean)Minimum Wage (Bob Fingerman)London's Dark (James Robinson, Paul Johnson)Alec (Eddie Campbell)Lobo (Alan Grant, Simon Bisley)Pogo (Walt Kelly)Manga Theatre (Akira Toriyama)Donald Duck: Lost in the Andes (Carl Barks)Deathlock (Rich Buckler, Doug Moench)Karl the Viking (Don Lawrence, Ted Cowan)Garfield (Jim Davis)Captain Harlock (Levi Matsumoto)Fists of the North Star (Buronson, Tetsuo Hara)Blacksad (Juanjo Guarnido, Juan Díaz Canales)Fantastic Four: Full Circle (Alex Ross)Emotional World Tour (Paco Roca, Miguel Gallardo)Xenozoic (Mark Schultz)Lobo: Convention Special (Alan Grant, Kevin O'neil, Keith Giffen)Mort Cinder (Alberto Breccia, Héctor Germán Oesterheld)Weird Western Tales: Jonah Hex (Michael Fleisher, JOhn Albano, Jose Garcia Lopez)Pocket Thoughts (Anthology)Liget (Anthology)Dejects (Jay Stephens)Crashpad (Gary Panter)Mechaboys (James Kochalka)Star Trek: Death Before Dishonour (Peter David, James W. On this episode of the pod we look at a Scottish institution. We gather up all our collections, thoughts and memories on the wonderful “Oor Wullie and The Broons” Both incredible comic titles in their own right, originally lovingly and expertly brought to life by the late great Dudley D Watkins who was a local comics legend and actually a fairly close neighbour to the Podcast HQ. You would be hard pressed to find a person in Scotland who doesn’t know who Oor Wullie or The Broons are.

[Episode 100 of That Comic Smell is dedicated to Ian Kennedy and Steven Walsh. Thank you, for everything]

First of all we want to give a MASSIVE thank you to Richter FM (AKA, Paddy Johnston of Good Comics) for composing this amazing track/new theme music. Please follow the links above and give the Hibiscus EP and the rest of Richter FMs music a listen and follow. Also a HUGE thank you to Chartsmasher (AKA, Joan Edam) for allowing us to use their track for so long.

We hope you enjoy the new intro and outro. It’s nice to change things up a little but we’re not changing too much around here. It’s comics, comics, comics, as usual. Seeing as it’s episode 100 as well then why not issue #100s to celebrate.

There is also a little focus on how some titles seem to get published/publishers, a particular comic that Mike managed to get his hands on (De Cape et de Crocs by Alain Ayroles & Jean-Luc Masbou) and a certain ‘Krazy’ collection of Sunday strips that could double as a paving slab.

In this episode the TCS crew conclude their review/comics chat from episodes 96 & 98. We dig a little more into the recent Europe Comics title sent to us and just have a good old fashioned, chin wag about what’s been wetting our appetites this time around. Just as a warning, we didn’t catch that a bowl was slightly too close to the microphone so there may be a couple of loud points. Just to make you aware going in.

This time around the crew are talking Intention Fails and their best of 2021. We revisit, what has now become a tradition for TCSPod. The Intention Fails, the comics that we have bought but never got round to reading. We each picked 3 (or four in some cases) titles at the start of last year but did we manage to read them all? We then went on to choose another three (or more) to read through 2022. Have alisten to see if you’ve read them already or if you want to buy them up and read along with the folks here. We then make our way onto the comics that lit up our 2021 and made it to our top 3, along with some honourable mentions.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

We are going to start this New Year off with some reviews. These were done earlier in 2021 but it’s a good way to start 2022 by hearing about some comics you can now get your hands on. There are self published works here, our friends from Avery hill, the kind folks at Europe comics and more! So have a listen, get a pen and paper at the ready to list those titles you’re going to want to buy and if you already have some of these comics then have a listen and see if our ideas match up. Let us know what you think of them as well.

We would love for 2022 to be the year we get more listener mail and hear what you folks have to say.

This week Tom has a good old-fashioned catch up with friend of the pod Josh Hicks. Josh is the creator of such titles as Human Garbage (from Good Comics) and the ever popular wrestling comic Glorious Wrestling Alliance. GWA is being released in a brand new, all coloured edition from Graphic Universe/Lerner Publishing as the “Ultimate Championship Edition”. GWA is a favourite around here and we can’t wait to see how it looks fully coloured. It was great to get to chat to Josh again. Always a massive pleasure. We cover everything from what we’ve been reading, his publishing house Carp Publishing Endeavours (which publishes works from Josh, Ioan Morris and Łukasz Kowalczuk), the new book, work and soooo much more.

Be sure to follow Josh on the usual socials to keep up to date with his comics and other projects. Twitter: @ajoshhicks Instagram: @ajoshhicks

Five Years later… We are still here. This episode is just a general comics chat and catch up but we celebrate our 5 year anniversary and what a time it’s been. We have made so many friends, talked about incredible topics, had a laugh, chatted to amazing creators, had interviews with heroes, went to cons, made a comics together, just generally enjoyed ourselves and so much more. We will never be even able to begin to thank you all for sticking with us and listening this whole time. It’s been an absolute pleasure and we will keep putting them out as long as it keeps being as fun as it’s been.

If this is your first one then welcome! We have 5 years worth of a back catalogue to catch up on and thanks for joining us now.

We really hope you enjoy this, as much as we enjoy making it.

(P.S. That’s us now on our way to another big moment as well. We’re on the road to 100!)

Guess who’s back with a brand new plan of attack?! Yes! The TCS crew are all back together in the same space. We got a really nice day weather wise so took the chance to sit outside and catch up with our favourite DC superhero squad. We are back chatting about the Justice League! In this JLI Vol.5 conversation we sift through the next collected volume whilst also admiring the single issues we each have, from different parts of the world as well. We compare the printing, colouring, different editorials/collections over the decades and of course (most importantly) the smell. It was so great to sit down and just have the band back together chatting comics again.

We really hope you enjoy, as much as we do…

Our Tom got the chance to sit down, once again, with The Legend of La Mariposa’s own, the great James Lawrence (@Kingfridayjoe [Twitter], @jimmydeansausages [Instagram]) of which the second collection is currently funding on Kickstarter https://tinyurl.com/hdu96tn8 This edition collects the 3 mini comics that were made during the making of the first collection “The Demon Gauntlet” there are also other stories that were featured in various publications over time. These are all individual stories so although it’s a second collection, you can just jump right in with this one. It’s a brilliant comic and it was a lot of fun to get the chance to chat to James again as our last one was a couple of years ago now. We go into as much detail about the new collection as possible and so much more.

Come back with us to the start of the year. Christmas had not long been, Santa had not long visited the TCS HQ and all of us were bestowed with comics goodies and ready to show them off and talk about them. Now cast your mind back to the start of 2020. The Folks here at the pod went through their “Intention Fails” the comics in which they bought with reading being the number one priority, then it never happened. Well, we revisit those top 3 intention fails of ours and see how we got on. Did we manage to read them? Do we have more for the comic year? What are stuff do we waffle on about?

[First off, We want to just apologise as somewhere in the recording there are some background sound issues. You get used to them pretty quickly, but just to make you aware.]

We are getting on the hot topic items here at TCS this time. We are talking “Environmental Messages” in comics and we have some absolute belters as well. We cover all aspects and ways in which creators have tackled this extremely important topic. Some serious, to the point, more informational and even fun. It really does show you though that the environment has been on creators minds for some time and how we should have always been taking this shit seriously. Before we go deep on that though, we have a right good laugh. Get ready for some mad tangents in this one.

“You can never have enough spunk!” It’s all coming to an end. Well… The incredible web comic Sarararara is at least. We caught up with our pal (and recent Doctor) Olivia Hicks about wrapping up Sarararara, what it feels like, taking a closer look at some of the pages, themes, how it was produced and the future of, hopefully, a physical collection. It was so good getting a chance to catch up and make sure everything was ok. We had such a great laugh and we even discussed more of Olivia’s recent comics work along with her new job as ‘Junior Graphic Novel Editor’ for ‘Rebellion’ What can we say, Olivia works F***ing hard.

Just to note that this was recorded just before Christmas 2020 so Olivia can now be found at @droliviahicks on twitter and Sarararara has now come to an end. So if you haven’t read it yet then go check it out! Google Sarararara.

HO! HO! HO! Get ready because not even distance can stop the TCS crew from having their Christmas party and catch up. We delve into what we have been reading this year and what we would consider out favourites of 2020. There is also a bit of general chatter as always but we mainly stick to the comics this time surprisingly. It’s been a funny old year and we even had a bit of a break near the tail end of it to recharge and bank some more episodes. We have had to adapt to the new way of doing the show but we have plowed on and continued to enjoy talking comics and having you all listen. So thank you. A very Merry Christmas to you all and a Happy New Year.

Cheers!

Hello! Hello! Welcome to another edition of That Comic Smell. This time we take a look just outside the world of comics to find those writers, artists etc that have made comics but are very much known for other things. We find famous, authors, actors, chefs, scientists, wrestlers, musicians and many more, all dipped and continue to dip their toes into the wonderful world of comics. We also must mention that there are some audio issues here and there throughout the episode but it doesn’t take away from the great chat that we had. There are some huge names and some real surprises during this topic. We also take a moment to praise our very own David for undertaking a tremendous task lately involving all the past comics titles we have discussed.

Just a nice short one today fro everybody. We do a spotlight on Dark Horse Comics. A company that has always been consistent In getting out comics. So much so that they often are forgotten. We delve into some of their back catalogue, a little on the not so pleasant side and discuss where we know them from mainly. All in all it’s great to focus on a publisher that isn’t the usual big two.

We did have a chat before hand but that was just between us about something coming very soon… But you’ll have to wait to see what it is. In this we tackle “Comics aimed at Children” we didn’t go massively in depth but just touched some of our favourites and had a brief chat about what classes as all sges and should the libraries review how the classify comics ages.

This time on the podcast we get real. Like, really real. Yes, we are getting down, deep and dark by covering some “Heavy Comics” That doesn’t mean we can’t have a good laugh along the way though. We have a little catch up, Mke has a little technical issue at the start and we gain an echo. Disclaimer! We did actually gain an echo near Nando’s books. There was a slight problem and we couldn’t get rid of it. It’s barely noticeable, but just so you folks know going in. It’s already heavy enough without the sound going that way as well.

We recorded this episode back in November 2018. We really hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed making it. “How’s about a little chat? ” This time on “That Comic Smell” Tom sits down with comic creators and all round brillaints folks, Olivia Hicks (@missoliviahicks) and Hailey Austin (@HaileyJayAustin) to have a “Creator Conversation” This interview was from back before Christmas last year (2019) so there is some Xmas chat at the top and throughout but they cover so many other topics that you won’t even notice. The likes of, 50 shades of grey, the preservations of films, youtubers, animals, and so much more.

They also got so wrapped up in the conversation that Tom forgot to ask where to find Olivia and Hailey online etc. So here are some links for the pair of them. https://ccas.creighton.edu/news/haileys-comic-world-first-creighton-graduate https://gumroad.com/oliviahickscomics https://sararararawebcomic.tumblr.com/

“LIVE FROM SPARK CON! IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT ” Genuinely, that above quote is true. We actually got asked and took part in the online convention of none other than Little Heroes Comics “Spark Con 2020” Dave, Mike, Nando and Tom were all live streaming about the tope 3 comics creators of all time. We each gave a list and we tried to figure out where there was ones that matched up. We really got into it. It’s been great for all of us being able to sit down and chat comics regularly and to then be able to do it live was just ideal. This is an uneditied version of what went out that Saturday night. You can see the video version on the “Fair Spark Books” YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyRQDsYSrMmcP38aQZCf83Q/featured along with many more great videos from that day.

We also want to take this opportunity to thank Aaron who ran the event and all for a great cause https://tinyurl.com/y7yjgyz2 Also to the people who watched along and gave us some great comments and questions. It was a lot of fun and we hope you enjoy listening back if you missed out or fancy listening again.

“What the hell is an internet?” Hello everyone. That Comic Smell is joining the ranks of many other fine podcasts by going remote. Yes, we are unfortunately stuck like this for the next while so hope you all don’t mind our attempt at chatting over Skype. We finally get a chance to catch up and chat some good old fashioned comics. What we’ve been reading whilst stuck in doors. How we are all getting on with being indoors. How there is silver linings to every bad situation and a lot less chomping. None of us had any food. No Biscuits. No tea. It’s not right!

As a little bonus, head across to our Twitter (@ThatComicSmell) to get a daily recommendation from our very own Fernando (#NandosComicOfTheDay)

“The times they are a changing ” Cast your mind back. Back before Thought Bubble. Back before we were all trapped in a bubble. Back before 2020… You there? Right, now you are in the headspace for our newest creator conversation, which was recorded September of 2019. Our Tom kept wating for the right time to put this out that it almost never came out. But he had such a good time sitting down with Norrie and Rebecca we couldn’t have that at all. So here it is in all it’s glory. Honestly it was such a blast sitting down with these two incredibly artists/creators and not the usual skype either. We are from the same town so Tom took a trip to their home, which they kindly invited him along to.

So sit back, relax and enjoy.

“If at first you don’t succeed, wait a couple years and come back to it I guess ” Hello! Hello! Welcome to another edition of That Comic Smell. This time we are discussing the books that we have sought after. The ones that have sat on the shelves with a proverbial halo around them and angel chorus. We are talking about our absolute holiest of “Holy Grails” but in the same breathe we are also discussing the ones that have sat on our shelves dormant and unused, waiting for us just to pick them up one day and actually flick through without putting them straight back and declaring them “Intention Fails”

“I… QUIT!” This time around the folks of TCSPod take a deep dive back into our favourite team series. Yes, we are jumping back into Justice League International. This time we are taking a look at Volume 4. We go into how it works as a series overall. Do these volumes necessarily work as such, the incredible artwork and the departure of an artist and so much more.

“Oh how the tables have turned…” Get ready for part 2! Yes, Sam Williams (@samuelcwilliams) joins Tom again for another ramble. The two of them shouldn’t be let loose like this. Sam turns the tables on Tom and asks him a couple of questions to start and the pair are off and running. If you expected ANY of the questions from the book then don’t come to this one. An in-depth conversation on comics on a whole, how they are perceived, libraries, the definition of a hobby and loads more? You are in the right place. We think Sam of Good Comics (@Good_Comics) https://www.goodcomics.co.uk/ will be a returning guest, just so we can get some of the usual questions answered.

buen día! bonne journée! Schönen Tag! And a good day to you! Welcome to our all European comics special. We last did one of these before the mics were even turned on. Literally the meeting before we decided to do a podcast so this is a very special one for us. You will hear us figure out how long it’s been that we have been meeting up (roughly) to do these. We also talk about a whole host of incredible European titles from all over. Of course there is also a fair bit of rambling. We really hope you enjoy.

We are starting our 2020 off with anabsolute belter of an interview with the on and only Samuel C Williams (@samuelcwilliams) of Good Comics (www.goodcomics.co.uk @Good_Comics) Sam and Tom sat down to work through some questions that Tom had written down. Made up for it at the end with the ‘still or sparkling?’ ‘Jaffa Cake’ and many more questions This was incredibly fun and Sam is such a great person to speak to. Don’t take our words for it, listen and find out for yourself. Some topics include… Baseball, Music, Influences growing up and how that effects your kid and so much more.

“On an island in the sun, we’ll be playing and having fun” HO! HO! HOOOOO! Let’s get ready for this festive season with an episode a week shall we? What better way to start it than with an interview with one of our absolute favourite creators… John Tucker!! (@JohnTuckerArt http://www.johntucker.co.uk/ ) Full disclosure, this was one of our Tom’s first creator conversations, so you will hear John mention going on holiday in October. The fact that we saved it means that you can enjoy it now. What a great episode it is too. We won’t spoil the conversation by saying anything on it. Just know that John Tucker is an absolute gent and a pleasure to speak to. Hopefully we will see/hear some more of him around TCS HQ in the future. Go check out John’s work and we hope you enjoy this weekly dose on the run up to Christmas.

Well, well. We hit the 90s. What folks term as the absolute dregs of comics. The decade that killed comics, but is it that simple? Of course not. “My next guest has starred in such things as…” This is a new stage in evolution for TCSPod. A new type of episode in which Tom sits down with creators and asks them questions to find out a little more about the creators themselves. A bit more than just their amazing work. We all love comic creators but let’s be honest, we are all rather nosey and would love to find out about them. This is the prime opportunity. The first guest keeps it all familiar by being our very own, Fred Egg Comics himself, David Robertson. Come take a journey through some of David’s other hobbies, his music tastes, thoughts on ghosts and so much more.

This and all the usual comics chat on the only comics podcast to totally not rip off Richard Herring’s emergency questions. Not in the slightest…

“Look out Gotham! The Joker’s back in town!” We're back and bigger than ever! After a large bout of sickness, festive down time and technical problems we come to you with this Bumper Giant Size Episode. We begin by answering some VERY interesting twitter questions from listeners. Which takes us nicely into showing off our Christmas pressies/swag to each other. Some have more than others and we go all out to try and make each other jealous. If that wasn’t enough for you, we even had a main topic of our Top 3 Bronze Age comics! As we find out though, we barely scratch the surface on such an iconic and defining era in comic history. That doesn’t stop us completely smothering ourselves in bronze-age goodness and sharing some incredible favourites.

This and all the usual comics chat on the only comics podcast that one day would love to be sponsored by a biscuit. I mean I think we eat enough…

Who’d have thought it ay? We also get even more festive. Each of us bring along a Christmas comic to show off and discuss.

This and all the usual comics chat on the only comics podcast to be on Santa’s Nice, Naughty and very indifferent list…

“Nuff Said” Welcome Heroes of Gaul and Spidey Friends! In this episode of That Comic Smell we take a dive into the into the pool and get as tough as Obelix to take on those romans for ourselves. Yes, we tackle the legend that is “Asterix” but not before we have a little goodbye to another comics giant, Stan Lee. We reminisce over some of our Stan written/ influenced books and Nando reads a very touching piece he wrote upon hearing the sad news. Although there is a sadness in the first section of the podcast, Asterix and A LOT of sugar seems to make the folks here go a little mad as we laugh and gibber our way through various other topics such as toilet reading and what we have been reading lately.

This and all the usual comics chat on the only comics podcast that can be enjoyed both on and off the toilet…

Tom got some questions together for the folks and they all tried to answer as best they can. We also put the call-out to our followers if they would like to ask us anything and low and behold some of them actually did! As a little peak behind the curtain also, Nando was meant to be joining us via Skype but the connection was awful so unfortunately once we did manage he couldn’t really hear us. Sorry to all you Nando fans. This one has some unusual questions, although even more unusual answers. So strap yourselves in, this is going to be a good one.

Merry Christmas Countdown folks!

Hello and welcome to another episode of “That Comic Smell” podcast. Be prepared folks, this is a two parter. The kind people over at Avery Hill Publishing got in touch with us a while ago and asked if we would like to review some of their books. How could we turn an offer like that down? More comics to read?! You’re on. So here we are, reviewing some of their incredible titles. We had a bit of a bump in the road as we lost our original recording of them so we had to record them again, separately. So the editing master Tom! (Beginner at best) cut them together for y’all to wrap your ears around.

So sit back and relax and enjoy the first part of the Avery Hill dedicated podcast.

Enjoy.

We continue our appreciation for Jack one more time.

We discuss what the publishers have done for his birthday celebrations. Also what some of our particular "Best" moments of Kirby are.

We run as a 3 man team for about the first 20 minutes waiting for everyone else to arrive, in the time we talk about the great "Ann Nocenti" , the general layout and folks that were at the Glasgow comic con. We also speak about the elusive Previews catalogue and Giuseppe has a run in with a mystery shop online.

All this and more on the only podcast to bring you Kirby crackle in the ears... think about how that works for a second.

Happy 100th Birthday Jack! From all of us here at "That Comic Smell"

I'm sure I speak for the world of comics when saying that, without you the comic world would not be what it is today and possibly wouldn't even exist. You were a creation genius and an inspiration to everyone and anyone within comics, whether they know it or not.

In this episode we talk all things Kirby. There is not much more to say except to sit back and absorb all the Kirby chat. We are also joined by an extremely special guest: Comic Artist, creator and all round good guy Mr. Dan McDaid.

Enjoy Folks.
