This was a packed review show since we missed the one in November. We started with the discussions on Assertiveness and included the conversation about Santa and Holidays. While most people will see holidays as a joyous time, the reality is that they are usually accompanied by stress because of logistical challenges and seeing people you normally don't see. How do you handle yourself during and after the holidays. Then we did a quick overview on the shows about commitment issues and then we finished up with discussing how to repair false beliefs.

The show has talked many times about how implicit biases can affect a person without them knowing it. That means the first step a person must go through is to be able to identify the bias. Once identified, then you must take the time to work on repairing those false beliefs that have been created from those past experiences and traumas.

Holidays are a great time to reconnect and spend time with friends and family, but when doing that, it can lead to a lot of stress. There is the reality of trying to fit in as many meals to make sure you see everyone. There is the reality of spending more than you should. There is the reality of family dynamics and possible past arguments. How do you manage all of these situations, enjoy your holidays, and be able to recover afterward?
Tune in to see Recovering from the Holiday Hangover with a Plan Through a Therapist's Eyes.
When thinking about Holidays, the usual sentiment is that they are a joyful time that you get to spend time with family and friends. While this is true, the reality is that when looking at all the expectations that surround the get togethers and being around people that you normally don't spend as much time with, it can be very stressful and exhausting. Unless you are the kids in the family, they usually do not experience the holidays the same.
To help overcome that, the panel discusses what you can do during those times, why it affects adults more than children, and how you can make it through the holidays.

We then were led on a discussion by our own Mr. Pope where we did a deep dive on the idea of Emotional Freewill versus Determinism. What did you think about those shows? Do you agree with the panel and where they landed on each topic?

When a client starts therapy, one of the first thoughts that is brought up is why do I need to talk about my past traumas? When you first bring up past experiences, it hurts because it is painful. There is no way around those early experiences as you start opening up, but when you look at how a person heals and grows, it requires that you go through discussing those traumas.
Tune in to see Why You Talk About Emotions Through a Therapist's Eyes.
When brought up by our own Mr. Pope about the idea of a neurologist who thought that human's lives were determined for them, we had to dive into this topic further. Pope leads the conversation where we talk about the effects that genetics, experiences, traumas, etc. will dictate the life we are going to have. We push back on the idea of how free will can counter those tendencies. Whichever way you lean, it was a great conversation.

This was an interesting topic when Chris produced it for the panel. It seems weird to discuss parenting strategies when it comes to adult friendships, but when you listen to the discussions it starts to make sense. We compare the how the love and logic approach is good for your adult friendships. Then we review the lost decade. This covers how not having those connections with friends outside of your spouse or your children can affect your mental health and how you must be purposeful in starting and building those friendships.

After you are hurt, the first thing that most people try to do is try to figure out what happened and ask themselves what they did to cause it. In a lot of situations, when you are hurt by someone else, the most important thing to remember is that it is not your fault. We further investigate this by re-addressing shame-based feelings and to look at how the blame game can easily be directed back to you when it should not be. To handle the emotional pain, we look at how you can manage these experiences.

This is one of those topics that Chris has been reluctant to cover because he wasn't sure how to broach it. This month was a weird one as we only had two shows, but one of them was the introduction to something we have been spending months building. In episode 232, we introduce the This Will Not Defeat Me project that is designed to help those that have dealt with past trauma. To kick this off, we built a video experience for those that went through sexual abuse and talked to Chris Davios about his experience and what it means for him to work on this with us. Between him and our own John-Nelson, we had a great conversation covering the shift of religion and society over the last few decades.

This month we had great topics ranging from how nutrition can affect your mental health to what we control. The first show was important because the food you put into your body can give you a better chance to maintain a better mental health state. The next topic was discussing what do we really control emotionally. This allowed us to discuss our locus of control and how shifting it can help us manage ourselves in different situations. Finally, we wrapped up by asking the question, do we control our attraction? What do you think? Do you agree with the panel from the shows?
Tune in to see the May Month in Review Through a Therapist’s Eyes.
This show starts by asking the question "Are we in control of our own experience with attraction?"
We talk about the physical nature of attraction and how there are three different stages of romantic love: Lust, Attraction, and Attachment. During those phases our bodies will release specific hormones during each stage of a relationship. When then move on to the psychological aspect on how we handle attraction. Do we let those hormones take over? Do we continue the attraction to the other person even after the hormones have stopped being produced?

This is one of those questions that most people either think they know the answer or are afraid to really answer. What do we really control emotionally?
