We talk about Enneagram Type 9 - The Peacemaker; their strengths, weaknesses, and comparison to Bible characters.

Enneagram Type 9

Nines are accepting, trusting, and stable. They are usually creative, optimistic, and supportive, but can also be too willing to go along with others to keep the peace. They want everything to go smoothly and be without conflict, but they can also tend to be complacent, simplifying problems and minimizing anything upsetting. At their Best: indomitable and all-embracing, they are able to bring people together and heal conflicts.

  • Basic Fear: Of loss and separation
  • Basic Desire: To have inner stability "peace of mind"

Key Motivations: Want to create harmony in their environment, to avoid conflicts and tension, to preserve things as they are, to resist whatever would upset or disturb them.

Biblical Figure: Jonah, John

Strengths

  • You connect easily with others and make them feel at ease, and you care about helping others reconcile with God and with each other.

Personal Recommendations

  1. It is worth examining your type's tendency to go along with others, doing what they want to keep the peace and be nice.
  2. Exert yourself. Force yourself to pay attention to what is going on.
  3. Recognize that you also have aggressions, anxieties, and other feelings that you must deal with.
  4. The choice is simple: you must sacrifice your peace of mind (in the short run) for the satisfaction of genuine relationships (in the long run.)
  5. Exercise frequently to become more aware of your body and emotions.

We talk about Enneagram Type 8 - The Challenger; their strengths, weaknesses, and comparison to Bible characters.

Enneagram Type 8

Eights are self-confident, strong, and assertive. Protective, resourceful, straight-talking, and decisive, but can also be ego-centric and domineering. Eights feel they must control their environment, especially people, sometimes becoming confrontational and intimidating. Eights typically have problems with their tempers and with allowing themselves to be vulnerable. At their Best: self- mastering, they use their strength to improve others' lives, becoming heroic, magnanimous, and inspiring.

  • Basic Fear: Of being harmed or controlled by others
  • Basic Desire: To protect themselves (to be in control of their own life

and destiny)

Key Motivations: Want to be self-reliant, to prove their strength and resist weakness, to be important in their world, to dominate the environment, and to stay in control of their situation.

Bible figure: Samson

Strengths

  • You’re a straightforward, even aggressive, leader, and you care intensely about justice.

Personal Growth Recommendations

  1. It goes against the grain, but act with self-restraint.
  2. It is difficult for Eights, but learn to yield to others, at least occasionally.
  3. Remember that the world is not against you.
  4. Eights typically want to be self-reliant and depend on no one. But, ironically, they depend on many people.
  5. Eights typically overvalue power.

We talk about Enneagram Type 7 - The Enthusiast; their strengths, weaknesses, and comparison to Bible characters.

Enneagram Type 7

Sevens are extroverted, optimistic, versatile, and spontaneous. Playful, high-spirited, and practical, they can also misapply their many talents, becoming over-extended, scattered, and undisciplined. They constantly seek new and exciting experiences, but can become distracted and exhausted by staying on the go. They typically have problems with impatience and impulsiveness. At their Best: they focus their talents on worthwhile goals, becoming appreciative, joyous, and satisfied.

  • Basic Fear: Of being deprived and in pain
  • Basic Desire: To be satisfied and content—to have their needs fulfilled

Key Motivations: Want to maintain their freedom and happiness, to avoid missing out on worthwhile experiences, to keep themselves excited and occupied, to avoid and discharge pain.

Bible figure: King Solomon

Strengths

  • You’re a straightforward, even aggressive, leader, and you care intensely about justice.

Personal Growth Recommendations

  1. It goes against the grain, but act with self-restraint.
  2. It is difficult for Eights, but learn to yield to others, at least occasionally.
  3. You do not have to have everything this very moment.
  4. Always choose quality over quantity, especially in your experiences.
  5. Make sure that what you want will really be good for you in the long run.

We talk about Enneagram Type 6 - The Loyalist; their strengths, weaknesses, and comparison to Bible characters.

Enneagram Type 6

The committed, security-oriented type. Sixes are reliable, hard-working, responsible, and trustworthy. Excellent "troubleshooters," they foresee problems and foster cooperation, but can also become defensive, evasive, and anxious—running on stress while complaining about it. They can be cautious and indecisive, but also reactive, defiant and rebellious. They typically have problems with self-doubt and suspicion. At their Best: internally stable and self-reliant, courageously championing themselves and others.

  • Basic Fear: Of being without support and guidance
  • Basic Desire: To have security and support

Key Motivations: Want to have security, to feel supported by others, to have certitude and reassurance, to test the attitudes of others toward them, to fight against anxiety and insecurity.

Bible figure: Peter

Strengths

  • Just like the name, you’re loyal and committed. And like Ruth, you care deeply about the people and places you’re called to. In an unhealthy state, you can let fear dictate your choices, but like Ruth, you can learn to take risks that lead to great joy and God-centered glory.

Personal Growth Recommendations

  1. Remember that there is nothing unusual about being anxious since everyone is anxious and much more often than you might think.
  2. You tend to get edgy and testy when you are upset or angry, and can even turn on others and blame them for things you have done or brought on yourself. Be aware of your pessimism.
  3. Sixes tend to overreact when they are under stress and feeling anxious.
  4. Work on becoming more trusting.
  5. Others probably think better of you than you realize, and few people are really out to get you.

We talk about Enneagram Type 5 - The Investigator; their strengths, weaknesses, and comparison to Bible characters.

Enneagram Type 5

Fives are alert, insightful, and curious. They are able to concentrate and focus on developing complex ideas and skills. Independent, innovative, and inventive, they can also become preoccupied with their thoughts and imaginary constructs. They become detached, yet high-strung and intense. They typically have problems with eccentricity, nihilism, and isolation. At their Best: visionary pioneers, often ahead of their time, and able to see the world in an entirely new way.

  • Basic Fear: Being useless, helpless, or incapable
  • Basic Desire: To be capable and competent

Key Motivations: Want to possess knowledge, to understand the environment, to have everything figured out as a way of defending the self from threats from the environment.

Bible figure: Thomas

Strengths

  • You’re driven by logic and straight-thinking more than emotions and can tend to be distant and aloof when you’re unhealthy. But when you’re Christ-centered and whole, you bring brilliance and insight to scriptural truths.

Personal Growth Recommendations

  1. Learn to notice when your thinking and speculating takes you out of the immediacy of your experience - be in the moment!
  2. You tend to be extremely intense and so high-strung that you find it difficult to relax and unwind.
  3. You see many possibilities but often do not know how to choose among them or judge which is more or less important.
  4. Notice when you are getting intensely involved in projects that do not necessarily support your self-esteem, confidence, or life situation.
  5. Fives tend to find it difficult to trust people, to open up to them emotionally, or to make themselves accessible in various ways.

We talk about Enneagram Type 4 - The Individualist; their strengths, weaknesses, and comparison to Bible characters.

Enneagram Type 4

  • Fours attempt to control their shame by focusing on how unique and special their particular talents, feelings, and personal characteristics are.
  • Fours are self-aware, sensitive, and reserved. They are emotionally honest, creative, and personal, but can also be moody and self-conscious. Withholding themselves from others due to feeling vulnerable and defective, they can also feel disdainful and exempt from ordinary ways of living. They typically have problems with melancholy, self-indulgence, and self-pity. At their Best: inspired and highly creative, they are able to renew themselves and transform their experiences.

Basic Fear: That they have no identity or personal significance

Basic Desire: To find themselves and their significance (to create an identity)

Key Motivations: Want to express themselves and their individuality, to create and surround themselves with beauty, to maintain certain moods and feelings, to withdraw to protect their self-image, to take care of emotional needs before attending to anything else, to attract a "rescuer."

Biblical figure: JOSEPH - DAVID

Strengths:

  • You feel deeply and emotions are central to your experience—as is being unique.

Personal Growth Recommendations

  • Do not pay so much attention to your feelings; they are not a true source of support for you, as you probably already know. Remember this advice: "From our present perspective, we can also see that one of the most important mistakes Fours make is to equate themselves with their feelings.
  • Avoid putting off things until you are "in the right mood." Commit yourself to productive, meaningful work that will contribute to your good and that of others, no matter how small the contribution may be.
  • Self-esteem and self-confidence will develop only from having positive experiences, whether or not you believe that you are ready to have them.
  • A wholesome self-discipline takes many forms, from sleeping regular hours to working regularly to exercising regularly, and has a cumulative, strengthening effect. Therefore, practice healthy self-discipline and stay with it.
  • Avoid lengthy conversations in your imagination, particularly if they are negative, resentful, or even excessively romantic.

We talk about Enneagram Type 3 - The Achiever; their strengths, weaknesses, and comparison to Bible characters.

Enneagram Institute Type 3

  • Threes try to deny their shame, and are potentially the most out of touch with underlying feelings of inadequacy. Threes learn to cope with shame by trying to become what they believe a valuable, successful person is like. Thus, Threes learn to perform well, to be acceptable, even outstanding, and are often driven relentlessly in their pursuit of success as a way of staving off feelings of shame and fears of failure.
  • Threes are self-assured, attractive, and charming. Ambitious, competent, and energetic, they can also be status-conscious and highly driven for advancement. They are diplomatic and poised, but can also be overly concerned with their image and what others think of them. They typically have problems with workaholism and competitiveness. At their Best: self-accepting, authentic, everything they seem to be—role models who inspire others.

Basic Fear: Of being worthless

Basic Desire: To feel valuable and worthwhile

Key Motivations: Want to be affirmed, to distinguish themselves from others, to have attention, to be admired, and to impress others.

Biblical figure: JACOB, SAUL, JOSEPH

Strengths:

  • You’re driven and success-oriented, sometimes to the point of caring more about how you appear to others than you should. But you’re faithful and focused—a lot like Moses.

Personal Growth Recommendations

  • For our real development, it is essential to be truthful. Be honest with yourself and others about your genuine feelings and needs.
  • Develop charity and cooperation in your relationships. You can do this by taking time to pause in a busy day to really connect with someone you care about.
  • Take breaks. You can drive yourself and others to exhaustion with your relentless pursuit of your goals.
  • Develop your social awareness. Working cooperatively with others toward goals that transcend personal interest is a powerful way of finding your true value and identity.
  • Threes adapt so much to the expectations of others that they lose touch with what they are really feeling about the situation. Develop yourself by resisting doing what is acceptable just to be accepted. It is imperative that you invest time in discovering your own core values.

We talk about Enneagram Type 2 - The Helper; their strengths, weaknesses, and comparison to Bible characters.

Enneagram Institute Type 2

  • Twos attempt to control their shame by getting other people to like them and to think of them as good people. They also want to convince themselves that they are good, loving people by focusing on their positive feelings for others while repressing their negative feelings (such as anger and resentment at not being appreciated enough). As long as Twos can get positive emotional responses from others, they feel wanted and are able to control feelings of shame.
  • Twos are empathetic, sincere, and warm-hearted. They are friendly, generous, and self-sacrificing, but can also be sentimental, flattering, and people-pleasing. They are well-meaning and driven to be close to others, but can slip into doing things for others in order to be needed. They typically have problems with possessiveness and with acknowledging their own needs. At their Best: unselfish and altruistic, they have unconditional love for others.

Basic Fear: Of being unwanted, unworthy of being loved

Basic Desire: To feel loved

Key Motivations: Want to be loved, to express their feelings for others, to be needed and appreciated, to get others to respond to them, to vindicate their claims about themselves.

Biblical figure: JOHN (the beloved disciple)

  • Twos are keenly aware of everyone’s needs, which is noble, except in doing so Twos ignore their own needs. Twos are natural givers, but they struggle to receive, either from a neighbor or from God.

Strengths:

“Service” is your middle name; you love giving to others and, as long as you’re healthy, don’t need attention to do so. (If you’re unhealthy, you’re probably looking for affirmation from others when you serve.)

Personal Growth Recommendations

  • Remember that if you are not addressing your own needs, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to meet anyone else's needs without problems, underlying resentments, and continual frustration.
  • Try to become more conscious of your own motives when you decide to help someone.
  • While there are many things you might want to do for people, it is often better to ask them what they really need first.
  • Resist the temptation to call attention to yourself and your good works.
  • Learn to recognize the affection and good wishes of others, even when these are not in terms that you are familiar with.

We talk about Enneagram Type 1 - The Reformer; their strengths, weaknesses, and comparison to Bible characters.

Enneagram Institute Type 1

  • Ones attempt to control or repress their anger and instinctual energy. They feel that they must stay in control of themselves, especially of their instinctual impulses and angry feelings at all times. They would like to direct these energies according to the dictates of their highly developed inner critic (superego), the source of their strictures on themselves and others.
  • Ones are conscientious and ethical, with a strong sense of right and wrong. They are teachers, crusaders, and advocates for change: always striving to improve things, but afraid of making a mistake. Well-organized, orderly, and fastidious, they try to maintain high standards, but can slip into being critical and perfectionistic. They typically have problems with resentment and impatience. At their Best: wise, discerning, realistic, and noble. Can be morally heroic.

Basic Fear: Of being corrupt/evil, defective

Basic Desire: To be good, to have integrity, to be balanced

Key Motivations: Want to be right, to strive higher and improve everything, to be consistent with their ideals, to justify themselves, to be beyond criticism so as not to be condemned by anyone.

Biblical figure: PAUL

  • A self-proclaimed lover of the Law and a Pharisee, enforcer of the “right way,” even to the point of murder. This, of course, describes Paul before the Damascus Road experience.

Strengths:

You’re strong-willed and justice-oriented, and you’re willing to make a stand for what you care about.

Personal Growth Recommendations

  • Learn to relax. The salvation of the world does not depend on you alone, even though you may sometimes feel it does.
  • You have a lot to teach others and are probably a good teacher, but do not expect others to change immediately.
  • It is easy for you to work yourself up into a lather about the wrongdoings of others... Similarly, beware of your constant irritation with your own "shortcomings."
  • Your Achilles' heel is your self-righteous anger. You get angry easily and are offended by what seems to you to be the perverse refusal of others to do the right thing—as you have defined it. Try to step back and see that your anger alienates people so that they cannot hear many of the good things you have to say.

Trending Up is all about improving ourselves and our relationships, so we're journeying with the Enneagram to learn more about ourselves and how to better relate with others.

The Enneagram is a personality test that is broken up into a set of nine distinct personality types, numbering 1-9.

1 is the Reformer. 2 is the Helper. 3 is the Achiever. 4 is the Individualist. 5 Is the Investigator. 6 is the Loyalist. 7 is the Enthusiast. 8 is the Challenger. 9 is the Peacemaker.

Points to consider from the Enneagram Institute

  • It's common to find a little of yourself in all nine of the types
  • We are born with a dominant type this inborn orientation largely determines the ways in which we learn to adapt to our early childhood environment.
  • People do not change from one basic personality type to another.
  • The descriptions of the personality types are universal and apply equally to males and females, since no type is inherently masculine or feminine.
  • Not everything in the description of your basic type will apply to you all the time because you fluctuate constantly among the healthy, average, and unhealthy traits that make up your personality type.
  • The numerical ranking of the types is not significant.
  • No type is inherently better or worse than any other.

The ideal is to become your best self, not to imitate the assets of another type.

Type One (The Reformer) is principled, purposeful, self-controlled, and perfectionistic.

Type Two (The Helper) is generous, demonstrative, people-pleasing, and possessive.

Type Three (The Achiever) is adaptable, excelling, driven, and image-conscious.

Type Four (The Individualist) is expressive, dramatic, self-absorbed, and temperamental.

Type Five (The Investigator) is perceptive, innovative, secretive, and isolated.

Type Six (The Loyalist) is engaging, responsible, anxious, and suspicious.

Type Seven (The Enthusiast) is spontaneous, versatile, acquisitive, and scattered.

Type Eight (The Challenger) is self-confident, decisive, willful, and confrontational.

Type Nine (The Peacemaker) is receptive, reassuring, complacent, and resigned.

Join us as we talk about the importance of our thoughts and the mold-ability of our minds to become what we behold.

Our minds are wonderfully incredible machines and yet they are extremely moldable. That is why it is important to be aware of what we are putting in, because what we behold, we become.

Article about couples looking like each other

https://journals.plos.org/plosgenetics/article?id=10.1371/journal.pgen.1006655

Heather Thompson Day (Twitter profile: https://twitter.com/HeatherTDay)

Study that showed that our mind cant tell the difference between thoughts we think and reality.

  • The more we focus on negative words and thoughts the more you can actually damage key structures that regulate your memory, feelings, and emotions.
  • Negative thinking is self perpetuating. The more you expose your brain to it the more it will automatically generate additional negative feelings.

Disrupt Negative Thoughts!

The faster we can interrupt our brains reaction to real or imaginary threats, the quicker we can generate feelings of safety and well-being and train our brains that this is how we deal with negative thoughts.

  • Talking badly about people or environments generates mutual distrust. It undermines your brains ability to build empathy and cooperation. The brain cannot distinguish between fantasy talk and reality when perceiving negative events. It ALWAYS assumes real danger exists.
  • The human brain needs a tremendous amount of energy to function, and it takes even more energy to build new neural circuits to change the ways we normally communicate.

Remember: The words you use to describe someone else, are the words that others who hear associate with you.

Bible Texts:

2 Corinthians 10:5 “...We also capture every thought and make it give up and obey Christ.”

Genesis 6:5

“The LORD observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.”

What is empathy illustrated video by Brené Brown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Evwgu369Jw

Anniella Rigacci (Sebastian's Cousin) Post on Facebook:

There is not a right or wrong way to react or respond during a traumatic event or crisis. People respond/react in different ways. In the midst of a trauma or crisis, it is not appropriate nor is it helpful to tell someone how they should react or respond to what is happening. “Just pray about it” or “God has a plan” is not helpful at this time. “You should do this... instead of this...” is not helpful at this time. This can create cognitive distortions. Someone that is experiencing a traumatic event or crisis, someone being triggered by a secondary traumatic event, someone experiencing vicarious trauma... is in a high stress/emotional state and is most likely unable to think logically or rationally, nor should they have to. What is most helpful is connecting with them emotionally, connecting with their right brain. Empathy is extremely important during this time. Take deep breaths with them. You don’t even have to say many words when you are empathizing. “I am here, I am with you, I see you, I hear you.”

Traumatic events are happening all around us. People are angry, hurt, depressed, anxious, paranoid... they want to blame someone or blame themselves for what is happening. These are thoughts and feelings that are normal, and feelings people are allowed to feel and process. Telling someone to not think or feel is counterproductive. It does not matter if you agree with their thoughts or feelings at this time. You can try to have a logical, rational conversation with them at another time. Everyone has the right to their own processing and healing of traumatic events. If empathy is hard for you, due to your own thoughts, feelings, and reactions, I would recommend giving yourself space, giving people space, staying away from social media or news outlets, especially during breaking news events, because they can be extremely triggering.

To anyone going through a crisis and/or experiencing any symptoms of trauma... I am here, I am with you, I hear you, I see you.

Join us as we continue to talk about the keys to life that God has left for us in the Bible.

God's Keys are His commandments that are found in Exodus 20 & Deuteronomy 5

They are God’s keys for our relational success

10 things you don’t have to worry about

First 4 commands - our relationship with God (Vertical)

Last 6 commands - our relationship with others (Horizontal)

Throughout the last 6 keys, it is as if God is saying throughout, “I VALUE PEOPLE”

  • I value your parents and family
  • I value your belongings and those of others
  • I value your life and the life of others
  • I value faithfulness in relationship

Love for Others

“Honor your father and mother, that you may have a long life”

IOW = “You can enjoy a life of harmony with your family and those around you, because of the principles that I am teaching you.”

Through the Spirit’s power I was obedient and respectful to my parents, trying to think about how they felt, and not just the way I felt.

“Do not murder”

IOW = “You do not have to kill or murder to survive. Life is not the survival of the fittest.”

I loved others by not “killing” anyone’s reputation, or hating anyone and getting back at them for something they did to me.

“Do not commit adultery”

IOW = “You do not have to take from others what isn’t yours, because I can lead you to the best that you need. I know your heart.”

I stayed pure, not going against my promise to God to use my sexuality only for the loving purpose for which He created it.

  • Emphasizes the importance of a family
  • Shows the relationship that God wants with you - one of faithfulness

“Do not steal”

IOW = “You do not have to take from others what isn’t yours, because I will give you all that you need. I know what you need before you even tell me.”

I respected other people’s belongings, not taking anything for myself that God didn’t provide for me.

“Do not bear false witness”

IOW = “You don’t have to lie to survive, you can be someone of integrity that is true to their word.”

I did not lie to others, or about them; instead, I told them the truth in love.

  • False testimony can be unfairly condemning the innocent and/or clearing the guilty.

“Do not covet your neighbor's wife or possessions”

IOW = “You do not have to covet and lust over what others have, because if you seek Me first, I will provide all that you need.”

I didn’t waste time wishing I had what others have. I trusted, instead, that God has provided everything I need.

  • Focuses on an inward attitude, rather than an outward action.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Join us as we talk about the keys to life that God has left for us in the Bible.

God's Keys are His commandments that are found in Exodus 20 & Deuteronomy 5

They are God’s keys for our relational success

10 things you don’t have to worry about

First 4 commands - our relationship with God (Vertical)

Last 6 commands - our relationship with others (Horizontal)

Matthew 22:37-40

“Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?”

Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’This is the first and greatest commandment.

A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

Love for God

“Have no other Gods”

IOW (In Other Words) = “You do not have to have other gods, I AM ENOUGH”

I spent time with God each day before I did anything else, thinking about His love and asking Him to guide my day.

“Do not make an image - to be worshipped”

IOW = “You do not have to have carved images of various gods, because I am beyond anything you know of (on earth, heaven, in the water or sky) and more powerful than anything, and above you and your mind; also because I am nearer to you than any idol or image you may create.”

I asked God to stay more important to me than anything or anyone else.

“Do not take the name of the Lord in vain”

IOW = “You do not have to use my name in vain, because I will come through for you.”

I chose not to do or say things that would be disrespectful to God, or would misrepresent Him.

“Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy” (holy = honor it & treat it like Jesus did = serving and healing others)

IOW = “Join me on the day that I have set apart to be with you.”

I kept my “date with God” on the Sabbath, joining Him in helping others and learning more about Him in nature and His word.

In our relationships, we project feelings and emotions on others. Edgar and I talk about projection and how God projects good on us.

Projection is a defense mechanism that people subconsciously use in order to cope with difficult feelings or emotions (https://www.everydayhealth.com/emotional-health/psychological-projection-dealing-with-undesirable-emotions/)

Projection is the single most derailing and destructive phenomenon in intimate relationships. It hurts our partners by casting them into a false role, and blocks authentic communication. (https://www.monikahoyt.com/projection-in-relationships/)

How to avoid it:

  1. Look within - Is the actual issue/problem with you, pause before you "attack" and see the role you play.

  2. When you get triggered, stay with the feelings - Don't attack the person, but express how their actions made you feel.

  3. Be aware of stress - the higher your stress level, the fewer emotional resources you will have.

What to do when your partner is projecting

  1. Be patient and loving - self evaluate

  2. Respectfully disengage - understand that the issue is with them and not really with you. Do not retaliate.

  3. Do not explain, defend, argue, teach, analyze, counter-attack, or criticize - Seek to understand your partner but do not pick up what isn't yours.

Projection in the Bible

Adam and Eve projected their guilt and shame on God as they hid from Him. They believed their internal condemnation was God's attitude toward them.

God practices healthy projection on us as He projects what He sees in us and what He can accomplish in, for, and with us before it is a reality.

  • Gideon (Judges 6)

  • Sarah and Abraham (Genesis 17)

You are inherently valuable because you were made in the image of God (with His logo); this value cannot be added to or taken away by what you do or don't do. God gives it to you because He loves you.

Join us as Edgar and I talk about the importance of our perspective and how the Bible helps us to have a good outlook in life despite what may be happening around us.

Perspective is important because it is how you view life and that around you.

Differentiation of self

“The ability to be in emotional contact with others yet still autonomous in one’s own emotional functioning is the essence of the concept of differentiation.” (Kerr & Bowen. 1988)

“Differentiation is a product of a way of thinking that translates into a way of being….Such changes are reflected in the ability to be in emotional contact with a difficult, emotionally charged problem and not feel compelled to preach about what others “should” do, not rush in to “fix” the problem and not pretend to be detached by emotionally insulating oneself.” (Kerr & Bowen 1988)

Understanding the conflict context you can have joy in the midst of uncertainty and troubles.

If you know God’s character, you can hope that He has good plans for you (Jeremiah 29:11-13)

Reality of this world: Hurt People, Hurt People

Don’t let a noun (person, place, or thing) take your joy.

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4)

Edgar and I continue our dialogue about conflict but we discuss it from a biblical viewpoint and see how the Bible paints this conflict.

We can find a battle between good & evil in almost every corner of culture; we see it in movies, books, and religions.

In looking at these battles between good & evil, there are casualities and unfortunate events that occur simply because of the fact that the context is that of a conflict.

In the Bible, we also find that there is a major conflict between good & evil, namely, God and Satan.

A fundamental principle for God is that He does not force you to do anything, because He knows that love cannot be forced. In this conflict, we find that God has to navigate through His ideal will and remedial will to help each and everyone of us in our best interest in light of the context of conflict.

History between God and Satan

(Genesis 3, Revelation 12, 13 -14, 17, 19)

  1. Satan wants Gods position, power, and prominence - Isaiah 14, Ezekiel 28
  2. Satan is cast out from heaven - Revelation 12
  3. Satan tempts Adam and Eve - Genesis 3
  4. God delivers promise of future deliverer and conquerer over Satan - Gen 3:15
  5. Satan attacks Jesus all through His ministry - Matthew 4
  6. Satan attacks Jesus’ followers and church - Revelation 12-13

Difference between Christ and Satan

  • Satan desires to ascend through pride and is brought down in the end
  • Jesus descends through humility and is exalted in the end

Life is a roller coaster, it’s full of ups and downs; in the same way our spiritual life is full of ups and downs.

Proverbs 24:16

"For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes."

Just as a child, when learning how to walk, falls often, so we in out journeys fall - but we are encouraged to get up and keep going.

The truth is that the struggle is itself a sign of life. In our struggle we can call out to God and cast our cares on Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).

Many Bible characters struggled, including Job, David, and Joseph. In their struggles and confusion, they continued to trust in God though they did not understand why they were in their predicament.

Jesus also struggled in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:38) and at the cross (Matthew 27:46) and he shows us that it is okay to express our pain, emotions and feelings when we are going through the struggle. It's okay to have questions.

The reality is that God wants us to find Him sufficient in the midst of our struggle rather than just demanding that He deliver us from it. God also wants to help you in your situation so that you may help others in the same situation.

One day we will see how God used our pain and losses to accomplish far more than we could ask or imagine.

Edgar and I wrestle with the concept of Worship and translate it to a modern, more-practical understanding.

Worship is anything we see is worthy of our: time, affection, money, energy, desire; meaning that we worship that which takes our time, money, affection, etc.

Worship tends to be seen as an event that occurs once a week, but in reality, worship is every single day.

Joseph Kidder in his book Majesty: Experiencing Authentic Worship, says:

"Worship is an encounter with God. It happens when our hearts touch the heart of God... Worship is finding ourselves engulfed with the grace, mercy, and warmth of God’s presence. Thus worship can take place anytime, anywhere, under any circumstance, when we meet God and desire to be changed by Him... Worship is an active response to God whereby we declare His worth. Instead of being passive, it is participative. Nor is it simply a mood or feeling, but a declaration of our awe and wonder."

We worship God in response to what He is done and-because He is worth our worship. Worship is about what you do, and not what is done for you by the church and pastors, since God already did all for you - we respond/react to God's initiative.

Bible passages:

Romans 12:1-2

Rev 14:7

Quality time is essential to a healthy relationship. We explore how that looks in our relationship with God.

It's about spending valuable and intentional time with God, listening (Bible & Meditating) and talking (Prayer) with Him. We do it to keep our relationship alive, because any relationship without communication and quality time fail and fall apart.

Location is crucial! Find a place where you go and automatically know this is where I spend time with God; rid of distractions and can be outside, in your car, in your closet, in your room, on the floor.

Devotional Ideas:

My Utmost for His Highest

Remember to dive into the Bible for yourself.

Think of The story:

When you read, try to understand where you are in the story (chronology) and what is happening at that time (History).

We speak of the Christchurch shooting in New Zealand that took the lives of 50 individuals and injured others who were worshipping at two mosques during Friday prayer, on March, 15, 2019.

We fear what we don't understand, therefore it is necessary to take time to understand and learn for ourselves.

It is important to take the counsel of James 1:19 to heart. “Quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger.”

  • Take time to listen

  • To understand

  • Show empathy

Be a bridge builder

  • Commit to helping others understand and see from a different point of view

We all crave community and being with others. It may look different, but at the end of the day we need each other.

We are all a part of community, whether that be through sports, music, politics, religion, or even our careers.

Bible Passages: Genesis 1:28, 2:18, 29; Ecclesiastes 4:9-12; Hebrews 10:24-25; Psalm 133:1; Acts 2:42-47; Romans 12:4-5; Mark 2:17; Matthew 5:3-4

A faith community serves as a support group where broken and real people can come together to journey with each other and draw closer to God.

Bible and Community:

  1. Community is encouraging -- you learn from others and you are able to help others grow.

  2. Community is fun -- engaging with others who love the same as you is energizing

  3. Community helps ones spiritual journey -- learning from others' past experiences and through dialogue and discussion helps you to move in the right direction.

  4. Community fosters love -- you learn to love others and to be loved

  5. Community shows that we are better together than we are alone

Prayer is opening your heart to God. Raw and real. Daily.

Prayer is opening your heart to God. Raw and real. Daily.

Bible Passages: Matthew 6: 7-13; Proverbs 16:3

PRAY = Praise, Repent, Ask, Yield

ACTS = Acknowledge, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication

"Prayer is the openings of the heart to God as to a friend, not that it is necessary in order to make known to God what we are, but in order to enable us to receive Him. Prayer does not bring God down to us, but brings us up to Him." (Steps to Christ pg. 93)

  2. In relationships you are faced with the decision to life daily based off of your choices or feelings. Will you choose to love your partner even when you do not feel it?

  3. Different works for different people

  4. Different techniques, tools, and actions work for different people. You must seek to find what works best for your situation and relationship.

  5. Goal = INTIMACY

  6. The goal of every relationship is to grow in intimacy - to get to know each other in a deeper level and wave-length.
