Sale went 12-4 with a 2.11 ERA and 237 strikeouts in 27 regular-season starts in his second season in Boston. He was among the favorites to win the Cy Young this season before he dealt with shoulder issues in the season's second half. Nunez hit .265 with 10 homers and 44 RBIs in 502 plate appearances. He played second base and third base.

After a franchise record 108 regular season wins, the Red Sox went on to dispatch the Yankees, the defending champion Astros, and finally the Dodgers tallying a total postseason record of 11-3. The World Series MVP was Steve Pearce. Pearce a June aquisition from Toronto, had 3 homers and seven RBI in the final two games. Another accolade was Alex Cora who became the first manager from Puerto Rico to win a title and just the fifth rookie skipper overall. Boston outscored the Dodgers 28-16 and had a better batting average of .222 compared to .180 The Red Sox now have tied the Athletics for most world series championships with 9 behind the Yankees and Cardinals. Pearce hit a twon run homer on Kershaw’s sixth pitch. Solo homers by Mookie Betts in the sixth inning and JD Martinez in the seventh quieted the LA crowd. Pearce added a solo drive of Baez in tne 8th to end the Dodgers season.

Behind an amazing David Price performance the Red Sox eliminated the defending champion Houston Astros 4-1 to advance to the world series. For the first time since 2013 the Red Sox are going to the world series and now await the winner of the Dodgers and Brewers. Price finished with nine strikeouts and no walks. He entered the game with a 6.16 ERA in the postseason as a starter, the third-worst ERA for anyone with at least 10 playoff starts. The key to Price’s success last night was his changeup. He threw it 39 times out of 93 pitches. On those changeups he forced 12 swing and misses. It was a different story for Astros ace Justin Verlander who entered the game with a streak of 24 consecutive scorless innings in postseasn eliminations games. This streak was ended when JD Martinez crushed a home run over the Crawford boxes and off the ConocoPhillips sign in left field in the third inning. On the pitch prior to the home run it looked like a strikeout but the umpire missed it and the Red Sox caught a break. Three innings later, Rafael Devers put the nail in the coffin as he hit a three run home run off Verlander. Devers home run wouldnt have been a home run in any other park.

However after review it was determined that Mookie Betts had his glove interfered with by a fan and Altuve was ruled out. Houston starter Charlie Morton gave up three hits, three runs, and two walks in just 2 ⅓ innings.

In game one of the ALDS against the Indians Verlander took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He allowed two hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Happ is slated to start game one of the ALDS. Happ has been one of the Yankees best pitchers of late going 7-0 in the 11 starts he made since being traded from Toronto in July. Happ went 1-1 with a 1.99 ERA in four starts against Boston this season. Chris Sale is on the mound for the Red Sox. Sale has thrown just 17 innings since July 27th because of a shoulder inflamation. Later in the inning, Michael Brantley delivered a two-out RBI single to give Cleveland a 4-0 lead. Yonder Alonso hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh, extending the Indians’ lead to 5-0. The Red Sox rallied on Xander Bogaerts’ RBI double and Mitch Moreland’s sacrifice fly, ending Bieber’s night in the 7th. Adam Cimber entered and retired both batters he faced, allowing an inherited runner to score on an Ian Kinsler groundout, to end the inning with Cleveland retaining a 5-3 lead. Gomes then drilled his 12th homer of the season off Tyler Thornburg in the eighth.

Giancarlo Stanton followed with an RBI single off Heath Hembree, and Torres' sacrifice fly increased New York's lead to three. In the 9thinning Chapman loaded the bases on walks before Martinez's two-out, two-run single pulled Boston within one. Third baseman Miguel Andujar then bounced a throw to first on Xander Bogaerts' grounder, with pinch-runner Jackie Bradley Jr. racing home with the tying run
Red Sox ace and Al pitcher of the month for July Chris Sale was supposed to start game one, but due to an injury Brian Johsnon was on the mound. It was a rocky start for Johnson as the Yankees tagged him for three runs in the first on a three-run homer by Didi Gregorius, then added another run in the second The true hero of the night was Steve Pearce who ignited the Red Sox comeback. While Pearce was fantastic, you also have to tip your cap to Mookie Betts who was for 4 for 4 on the night and reached base all 6 times he was up, Benintendi who was 3 for 6 and had 3 RBIs, JD Martinez who had 2 doubles, and newly acquired Ian Kinsler who had 3 hits and 2 RBIs on the night.

Los Angeles reliver Jake Jewell was carted off the field with what appeared to be a gruesome injury to his right ankle after covering the plate on run-scoring wild pitch in the eighth. Barnes pitched a scoreless 8thinning, but left 2 men in scoring position for Kimbrel. Kimbrel loaded the bases, but escaped en-route to his first four-out save of the season. Kimbrel now has 23 saves on the season. Boston starter Rick Porcello gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings. Heaney was tagged for six runs in 3 1/3 innings.
