Messy Life Mighty Love Podcast: Recent Episodes

Abigail Alleman

A podcast where I share my messy life, the brokenness, and the beauty, as I tell stories from childhood memories to motherhood to my battle with bipolar disorder. Through each story I will lead myself and my listener to the Mighty Love greater than the deepest mess. It's encouragement for the soul who needs to hear of true hope. It's short and sweet, under 10 minutes and delivered weekly. It is my prayer that all who listen would be blessed.

Here is the original blog post:  'A Tree of Life Out of a Root of Grief' as it was originally posted at {in}courage.

In this episode I remember a 'breakthrough' in the healing of my grief over my mother's death. While I speak specifically of this grief, what I learned applies to any grief as we learn how God can and wants to create a tree of life out of every root of our grief.

Listen in if you:

  • Feel stuck in processing a certain grief.
  • Don't know if you know how to grieve.
  • Have ever lost someone or something significant.

It's been a while since I've been in this space and there's good reason for that. There's been moves, book editing, but most, the caring for my father before he went home to Heaven on August 6, 2021.

After a hiatus because of the messy days I am living as I sell and leave the home I have made in this world and make way for a new home I do not yet know, I am back. Instead of launching into the many ideas that have come from this messy time, I thought I would finish what I started and do the second part of the 'Messy Art of Listening' series I began a few weeks ago.

**Today, I share a little more deeply about the isolation which led me straight into the darkest, most gut-wrenching time of my life. My heart in today's podcast is to see the wilderness and desert of our isolation turn into the beautiful promises of Isaiah 51:3:

" For the LORD comforts Zion,
He comforts all of her waste places,
And makes her wilderness like Eden,
Her desert like the garden of God.
Joy and gladness will be found in her,
Thanksgiving and the voice of song."

Listen in today:**

  • If you have ever believed a lie about yourself
  • If you are struggling with feeling alone, especially in these days
  • If you long for deeper communion with God, but wonder how to begin
  • If you need to hear someone's own journey to know you are, indeed, not alone
  • If you want some tracks to run to get you through these isolating days

**I trust the few minutes you take to listen will be a blessing to your heart and a comfort to your soul.

Today, I talk about something I spent 10 years doing--playing lacrosse goalie. As with many things, it isn't until you really look at these past experiences, often messy, that you see the mighty love of God breaking through, then and now. And, while there really are lessons for my own life, there are lessons for us all as we live out these uncertain days.

Listen if you feel:

  • you need to remember what God has taught you.
  • you need to remember what God has brought you through.
  • your story isn't something you lean on.
  • afraid and are looking for an anchor in these days.
  • it is hard to believe you have the strength to face what is coming.
  • you need to remember the faithfulness of God.

I truly consider it a privilege for you to share a few minutes of your day with me! May God bless your heart richly because of this Messy Life Mighty Love podcast!

Today, I make a sharp departure from using metaphors with yummy food. Instead I use metaphors related to manure, yep, manure. It has always been my 'smell of home' and of a love mightier than the thrones of many kingdoms.

  • You think you have things in your life that just stink.
  • You want to find perspective on these things.

Today I talk about two of my favorite meals my mama, now nearly 18 years since she went Home, used to make. Although it can by cheesy (haha) to talk about lasagna and baked ziti and what we can learn from them, I have found we truly can see a lot about ourselves. Truly, the messy things in our lives, on every level, have much to teach us about the nature of God's mighty love and all of the ways He chooses to reveal it.

Listen if you need:

  • encouragement around the homespun things in your life
  • to remember the gift of people who have served you messy food
  • a reminder that it's not about having it all together
  • grace for today

Thanks so much for giving me 10 minutes of your time! I don't take that gift lightly!

Abby :-)

In this episode, we take a step back and look at 'messy' from the mouth and heart of a two year-old. In the end, we find how 'messy' describes us, and our first parents, well. We all lose our way and end up in some or many messes, yet there is a Mighty Love breaking through, with a plan to rescue us when we are helpless to clean ourselves up. It's a heartwarming, and yet so much more, kind of story. My favorite. Listen in!

Intro: “Messy Life. Mighty Love.” Podcast

Hello, welcome to the ‘Messy Life. Mighty Love.’ Podcast. I am Abby, your host, storyteller, fellow journeyer and friend.

Life is Messy. It’s like that scrumptious lasagna, whose pieces spill out and slide all over and possibly get on fingers and for a little, or not-so-little one, around the mouth, on the shirt and perhaps pants too. But this mess is also full of love. And it’s a mighty love like the one filling the hands and heart which made the lasagna.

Life is also messy like manure. To the nose unfamiliar it is simply the stinky poop of a cow. But to someone like me who grew up surrounded by manure on the dairy farm my family worked, it is the smell of home and of a love mightier than the thrones of many kingdoms.

Yes, truly, Life IS messy, but it is equally mighty in love.

In this Messy, Mighty podcast I want to open my life and ask you to jump right in with me. Whether its scrumptious lasagna or stinky manure, I want to lead you to the love found in every part of our messy lives.

When I first thought of starting a podcast, I was going to focus on my most recent, tragically messy journey with bipolar disorder. I was going to push hard into the blood and guts of it and lead you, the listener, to the very real hope I have found amid mental illness.

But, when I thought more and prayed, I realized this would be a disservice to you and me. You see, although I have fought hard these past five years and have won true hope, a big part of my healing has come through remembering the whole of my story. It has come through seeing my life like that mighty ‘oak of righteousness’ Isaiah prophesies about for the people of God. It has come through a good God showing me how the soil of my tender little heart which first trusted Him has grown many, many roots branching out below and producing fruit above. Its not a proud thing to see it this way, its an identity-in-God and life in Him which cannot be shaken, come hell or high-water kind of thing. This perspective has been essential for my own healing and I believe, it is essential for your healing too.

To understand the dark hand of mental illness, it’s pivotal to recognize how it slices through brains and hearts and spirits building the case that it is all a person is. I know it has done that to me. And nothing was messier then when I ended up in a mental ward in Budapest, Hungary. Then, just one week after my release, we left a life my three kids, husband and I loved one week after I got out of the hospital. It was an unbelievable, tragic mess. And the steel fist of bipolar disorder threatened to level me for good.

Yet, I found a precious paradox, the most glorious hope in that mess. A Mighty Love which the depths of hell, and the broken mess of a fallen world could never, ever destroy.

And it has emboldened me to grow stronger and stronger as I own my story and look at all the messes of my life, both big and small, and find the mighty love therein. For here, I know, I, and maybe, just maybe, you too, will be healed.

So, each Thursday, beginning next week, you will find a new episode. Here I will share a story from my messy life and lead us to the mighty love therein.

Whether you struggle with mental illness, like me, or a chronic illness or a rebellious child or strained family relationships or any other kind of deeply painful mess, I hope you will be reminded of times outside of this current mess. Times inside of your story when the love of someone which reflected the mighty love of God, can truly be seen. In this faithfulness, that I partake of through sharing my story, I also offer to you with loving hands.http://abigailalleman.com
