Because just one epsiode speaking to Deborah MacNamara about her book, 'Nourished: Connection, Food And Caring For Our Kids (and everyone else we love), wasn't nearly enough, I followed up with this episode. In this hour I savour some of the insight received and more content, highlights from my convesation with Deborah, content from the book and reflections on topics covered such as comfort food, how mazlow went wrong, love and caretaking, being the good provider, food as addiction, vulnerable feelings and more. By the end of the podcast, I was connected to my own memories of food and my own vulnerable feelings as I asked Deborah's poignant question, out loud and for all of us to curiously explore our own answer to. "If one person could cook for you, who would it be?"

Enjoy.

"Just because you eat food doesn't mean you're nourished."

Deborah MacNamara returns to the podcast with podcast host Julie Cusmariu to discuss her groundbreaking new book, 'Nourished: Connection, Food, And Caring For Our Kids (and everyone else we love). Deborah MacNamara takes us on a deep and insightful journey through storytelling, a fantastic riddle (the answer to which is revealed in this podcast at the end), provocative questions, developmental science and robust research to help us make sense of our relationship to food and to reclaim nourishment. I couldn't agree more with what Dr. Gordon Neufeld declared “After reading this groundbreaking work, it will be impossible for you to ever view food as just food again.” And I just loved this question posed by Deborah on page 74 of the book and to those she interviewed for Nourished "If you could choose one person to cook for you, who would it be?” What a great and poignant question to ask each other and our kids.

There is so much to gain from reading this book, so much to digest and take in, so much to savour and explore. May it provide you with as much nourishment as it did for me. Thank you Deborah and thank you everyone for tuning in and for the work you are doing in this world as providers and caretakers.

"Stunningly beautiful, an ode to love, relationships and food. Dr. MacNamara shows how true nourishmentis about connection and how the family meal can be a celebration of emotional closeness." Mona Delahooke, PhD.

When the opportunity arises and you can take a moment to tune ‘it’ all out, if you so choose, maybe this brief meditation (almost four minutes) might resonate for you; a ‘time out’ to slow down, to let ‘it’ go, to momentarily put down the overwhelm. I acknowledge and honor where you may be, the experience you may be living, what you may be navigating, who you may be caring for in addition to yourself. May you feel ease, some relief and care for yourself and each other (those who you know and those who you do not yet know).

If we honor and care for your own capacity, would you agree that we make more room to care for and honor and ‘see’ others❓

May you find benefit. Wishing you the best.
Wishing you more peace inside. Praying for peace for all beings. ❤️🙏🌎

The title of this meditation shares the name of this 4 week virtual group program Nicole Schiener, (Registered Psychotherapist and Compassion Fatigue Professional), and I are hosting in February 2024 for Sensitive Changemakers, Helping Professionals, Caregivers and Creatives. @peaceandpossibility 😘

Alane Freund is a cherished guest on the podcast and we have had many conversations, always with a unique focus through the lens of High Sensitivity. "I don't know, but let me listen" said Nicholas Janni on a previous podcast conversation of ours. I did that today. It's a gift when I can just show up and be available to what is present and broadcast from that space. The unknown, the creative space, to step into a flow state. I trusted and together with some live listeners and you (for whenever you tune in), we listened, and breathed and danced. I pulled some oracle cards which were pretty out of this world neat and it was transformational for me and the listeners who were live. Tune in and benefit from the intention of this hour, to transmute and transform your energy and calm your nervous system and feel uplifted by your own source, your own availability. May you benefit and share with those who you know will too.
Thanks for tuning in.

7 Tips to Have Great Birds & Bees Talks — https://birdsandbeesandkids.com/free-tips/
Amy Lang, MA has been a sexual health educator for over 25 years. Surprised by her discomfort with just the idea of talking with her young son about his body, she knew she needed help. Amy did a bunch of research to learn how to talk with kids about bodies and sexuality and realized she could help other parents with this important part of parenting.

In 2006 she started Birds & Bees & Kids. With her lively, engaging, and down-to-earth style she helps parents become comfortable and confident talking with their kids. Amy’s books, online solutions center, and podcast called “Just Say This”, show parents they really can become their kids' go-to birds and bees source.

How can you use the wisdom of your body to take the next best step for yourself?
Tune in for an experience in to this place inside you.

The experience of feeling heard is precious AND transformative. I can attest to this as a coach, host of a podcast and as a human being. It’s a privilege to be both the listener and the one speaking in this precious space of feeling heard. Well-being is enhanced, creativity too and it’s simply yet powerfully healing.

Also in this episode I talked about the work of Sonja Lyubomirsky’s (a previous guest on the podcast) research on 'savouring' as a happiness boosting strategy, I shared a beautiful moment between my 8 year old and I on our morning walk to his school around discernment, and offered an experience to feel and connect internally from unknown to known, from the dark to light, from what may be hidden to what wants to be revealed.
May you benefit and thank you for sharing this with those you know may benefit too. 🎧

I'm back! After a few months away from the podcast, I am so glad to be returning. Are you being heard? What are you hearing inside you? Settle in and take this moment to breathe, move and see what you can hear, inside.

Ideas shared, questions raised for reflection on this episode:
When you take a moment to tune in, what are you hearing?
What have you been hearing for a while but have been putting off (too busy for), that thing that is trying to grab your attention to say "choose me to do, to enjoy, to express to create".
Art and creativity and play for healthy self expression and mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health.
What is your art?
Is it enough?
Am I enough?
Can I welcome in softness?
What happens when I move?
What is impacted when I find my rhythm?

Lots touched upon. See what resonates for you and where it touches you.
So great to be back with you.

This week on the podcast Deborah MacNamara returned to grace the podcast waves and offered insight to help us orient in these changing times. As she said “we can’t orient to something that is always changing” and yet she managed to orient us nonetheless despite these changing times in the midst of this global pandemic. Also, a conversation with Deborah MacNamara wouldn’t be complete without speaking about emotional health and well-being and what we can do to allow our feelings to be safely expressed. I was reminded, yet again how critical play is for emotional health and well-being not just for the children and youth we are raising and caring for, but us adults too. Deborah’s dedication and work towards asking this question she raised in our conversation, “what does it mean to be human and how do we stay well?” of course confirms why @drdeborahmacnamara’s words and research and wisdom are imperative and needed and welcomed and so beneficial to us all.

Part 3 of The Mother's Day Revue.
Favourite bits and brand new hits from the podcast series #Motherhood #LetsCreateAVillage.

Featuring Fariha Naqvi-Mohamed(@CanadianMomEh), Michelle Osbourne(@UncomfortableBliss) other special guests including Asha Frost (@ashafrost), Nic Strack(@nicstrack), Tanya M. Odom (@TMODOM) and Ellen Bettmann.

Topics covered:
Diversity and inclusion, race (and talking to our kids about it) privilege and cultural appropriation, creating change, gender identity, motherhood after 40.

“Change doesn’t happen when we stick to people who look like us, who think like us, who dress like us. That’s not where you see change happen. Change happens when you make yourself uncomfortable, when you step out of your comfort zone, when you walk into something not knowing what to expect but you keep an open mind. That is how change happens. “ Fariha Naqvi-Mohamed,

"Shine baby shine. Let's all shine. I think one of the greatest gifts that we are given is being able to connect with another human being. We all want to have a connection in some way. Right? And so when you find that human being, that person, whoever that you connect with, you have to hold on to it, use it as a gift and just really live with it.

"I just think that the less you care about what people think, the happier you will be in your life."

""Your light doesn't dim when you ignite someone else's flame. It just makes the world shine that much brighter.” unknown

*57:38 Fariha Naqvi-Mohamed www.CanadianMomEh.com @CanadianMomEh
Montreal Gazette Columnist, Digital Influencer, Speaker and a woman making history as the first hijab wearing woman TV journalist in Quebec and the 2nd in Canada.

"I did study journalism and communications and so I knew that I always wanted to kind of work from home when I wanted, when I would one day be a mom. That was something I knew from the age of eight years old. Wow. I just, I knew that I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to be a journalist, but I also wanted to be able to stay at home if possible with my children and raise a family and I knew that. "

"I was the first woman in my family to put on my hijab. I owned that space that I chose for myself to be, to be a woman who expressed my strong feminist views by choosing how the world sees me and choosing what the world sees of me."

" I'm a public figure. I'm very public in terms of the work that I do, but it takes a toll on me. And when I'm dealing with this level of hate and especially if it comes from different directions, by email, by DM, it just feels like online is a negative place. I have to retreat.
I have to kind of take care of my own mental health and take a little bit of time offline and reconnect, with my family, with my friends. I kind of get myself into a better place where I can, I can tell myself that, you know, I start to feel sorry for the person that who would really feel compelled to spend their time in that manner. "

"...the invitation and also the experience of putting yourself in the place where you can experience other people who have a different point of view. You know, where you may not agree, but like you used these words, to lean in.... to be open...because that's how we grow and stretch."

"Change begins by when we come out of our comfort zone and we get to know each other."

Queer Enby Mixed Asian Mom (They/Them) speaking about her journey coming out as genderqueer with her husband and toddler. Nic was also live in the chat room when I was broadcasting and we had a meaningful exchange over the use of their pronouns. Listen for that.

"Through becoming pregnant, um, and having essentially all of my masculine side be visually erased, right. People were automatically assuming constantly that I was female. Um, I missed that part of me. "

"I have spent more time just rooting into what it means for me to sometimes look out these eyes and think that someone would think that I had a male body. Um, or to sometimes look out these eyes and not have any sort of an attachment to what, just have no experience of gender and to not be able to necessarily articulate it to other people, but to know that it's okay for that to be my truth and for me to explore what that means for me as well as what that means for my family. "

*01:57:47: Asha Frost www.AshaFrost.com @AshaFrost
Asha Frost is an Anishinaabe woman from Neyaashiinigmiing (Cape Croker). She is a Medicine Woman, Mentor and Visionary who believes that we heal when we awaken to the beautiful medicine that we carry within. She facilitates healing in her practice, through the use of Shamanic Healing, Homeopathy and Indigenous Based Ceremony.

"...as Canadians we always, you know, I hear us say, we're just such nice people and we're so diverse and we're just so multicultural. And you know, we always are focusing on those aspects, which is great. And part of that is true, but there is a very dark history to Canada that people don't. Lots of people, when I share this, they said, I had no clue. I had no idea. Why do we not learn about this in school? Why do we not? And it's starting to change. "

"Where is this coming from and who is this teaching coming from and what are you taking from them?
Also are you honoring the whole story? So that dark history of Canada, do you know anything about it? Do you know the missing and murdered indigenous women? Do you know about the water advisories on so many of our first nations across Canada? Or are you just wanting to take the pretty stuff and use it for your own wellbeing? So it's that taking on our g that I have felt in my body rumbling up that I'm finally ready to speak about."

"Dear White People, It’s a privilege to learn about racism instead of experiencing it your whole life. " Black panther girl, Quartney chante- from the Check Your Privilege account on Instagram

*02:17:51 Tanya M. Odom, Twitter: @TMODOM- Global Diversity and Inclusion and Education, Consultant and Executive Coach.

Using empathy and compassion to talk about race and privilege with our kids.

"How do we get people to think about beyond who I just know and who I'm connected with and care about?"

"What we don't always want to do is to say we're all the same, right? We're all humans, but we also have difference."

*02:33:55 Ellen Bettmann@EHBett : Human rights and social justice activist; anti-bias educator; grandma x 8; co-author Hate Hurts.

Practical language and phrasing about how to have difficult conversations.
"Thank you for telling me that. I really want to understand..."

Ellen addresses Robin DiAngelo's powerful book White Fragility and how can we respond
when 'uncle Bob' at a big family dinner says something racially offensive. And how do we talk to our kids about this.

“For me the hardest thing to learn and maybe the most important, this was for me, but I think it’s important for all parents, is don’t expect perfection from them or from you. You’re human. You don’t have to be perfect. What matters is that you go for love as much as you can. “

33:27- Accepting Emotions
