For so many of us, being nice is something that we do moment by moment, but if we are in tune with our motivations, often we use being nice to deal with something inside of ourselves. But what if we could be people who are naturally disposed to love and care for others without it being tainted by our own guilt, shame, or desire to control people and situations? Today, Derek talks about what kindness looks like.If you'd like to connect with us or share a prayer request, feel free to fill out a connect card here: vineyardaltoona.churchcenter.com/people/forms/288405We're always grateful for your continued financial support. Our culture is full of people who struggle to make decisions with conviction. Even though we admire people who are able to make decisions like that, often we are making halfhearted decisions, constantly afraid we are missing out on something better. Is there any way we can become the kind of people who make decisions confidently with conviction? This weekend, Derek will address the question "How do I know if I'm doing the right thing?"If you'd like to connect with us or share a prayer request, feel free to fill out a connect card here: vineyardaltoona.churchcenter.com/people/forms/288405We're always grateful for your continued financial support. Conflict is something that creates anxiety in most people. We have a hard time knowing how to do conflict well. We either avoid it altogether, or we overreact and regret it. Many of us have a desire to change things about our lives, but we struggle to actually make the changes we desire. We can see it in the cycle of New Year's resolutions. Whether it's to lose weight, become more financially responsible, improve mental health, or something else, we all struggle to make changes in our lives. The reality is we struggle with self-control. Much of the time, the reason we struggle with it is because we haven't addressed a key component. Today, Derek begins our new series called "Finding the Power to Change" by addressing the key component that will help us grow in self-control.If you'd like to connect with us or share a prayer request, feel free to fill out a connect card here: vineyardaltoona.churchcenter.com/people/f…s/288405We're always grateful for your continued financial support. We may be familiar with the story of the birth of Jesus, but the story of the birth of Jesus is actually recorded in the Bible to tell a much larger story. Love is central to human existence and necessary for the joy, peace, and hope that we all long for. People often try to find or earn love on their own merit, but the only real source of love is God. We can experience true and lasting love when we participate with Him in His mission of love. Today Jeri finishes our Advent series. Most people in our culture want to be happier. The pursuit of happiness is so central to American ideals that it is written into the Declaration of Independence. The problem with the pursuit of happiness, though, is that it's an emotion, a feeling. Pursuing an emotion or a feeling has the effect of making us erratic, especially since we have such a difficult time trying to figure out what will make us happy. Faith in Jesus offers us something that's like happiness, but it has the effect of making us more stable. That thing is joy. Today, Derek talks about how to be a person of joy.If you'd like to connect with us or share a prayer request, feel free to fill out a connect card here: vineyardaltoona.churchcenter.com/people/forms/288405We're always grateful for your continued financial support. If you pay attention as you read through scripture, one thing that is evident is that God is passionate about those who are not his people. Because this is true, God constantly calls his people to love foreigners. Today, Derek talks about how Christians should think about foreigners. In some spheres of the church there has been a divide between people who are deeply passionate about personal holiness and people who are deeply passionate about Christian social engagement. We who live the west exist in what is possible the wealthiest era of human civilization. And despite our great wealth, there still burns within many of us the desire for more. More money, more possessions, more experiences. We believe that "If I just had more.... I would find satisfaction". How should we respond to such desires? In an age such as this, the practice of generosity exposes and resists the idolatry of wealth. And it forms us, not only to trust, but to participate in God's abundance, goodness, and generosity. If you'd like to connect with us or share a prayer request, feel free to fill out a connect card here: vineyardaltoona.churchcenter.com/people/forms/288405We're always grateful for your continued financial support. In our culture is common for us to separate the spiritual things we do from the other things we do. We have a tendency, then, to put some things in the spiritual category while other things we would put in a secular category. We would put church and church activities in the spiritual category. When it comes to caring for the poor and marginalized, we assign those activities to the realm of social non-profits, government agencies, or politics while we hold tight to the belief that the Church should stick to spiritual matters. Because of this separation, we find it challenging to hear and obey the clear teaching of scripture that God's people are to care for the poor and marginalized. Today Derek will continue our series with a message called "It's All Spiritual".

What lengths would you go to in order to keep someone from making a mistake? What if that mistake had eternal implications? The way the Church engages in issues of justice, mercy, and marginalized people is something with eternal implications, but increasingly these things have been abandoned to the realm of politics and non-profit work. Today, Derek talks about how justice and mercy ministry is central to the Gospel.

Throughout this sermon series, we have talked about what it looks like to live out our mission statement: "Transforming the spaces we inhabit by the power of the Gospel." Some steps along the way have been living a life of service, and emotional health. Today, Jeri will wrap up the series by talking about intentional community and how an intentional path of discipleship is vitally important.

Living a Gospel-oriented life is difficult. It’s hard to live a fully-integrated Christian life in every sphere because when we find ourselves in uncomfortable or anxiety-producing spaces, our broken patterns come through. But often we are blind to these processes. How do we discover them and grow past them? Today Derek talks about the role of emotional health in the spread of the Gospel.

The premise of this series has been that our own encounter with Jesus is what propels us into the world to share Good News. Every church wants to see new people come to faith in Jesus in the midst of their respective community. Most Christians also understand that part of the role of a believer is to share faith with those who don't yet know Jesus. But so often we are at a loss for how to make that happen. The Bible shows a picture, though, of a people who are so captured by encounter with Jesus that they can't help but share what they've experienced. Evangelism, then, is not trying to convince people to cross some line, but it is an invitation to come and experience the goodness of Jesus we've experienced. Today Derek begins our new series on this topic called "Come and See."

We live at a time in American history where it has become common for people to deconstruct their Christian faith, and some never reconstruct it. Even if we never deconstruct our faith in a big way, many of us struggle with what's supposed to happen in our lives after we say yes to Jesus and get baptized. But God intends for us to live in his eternal life now and forever. So how do we live into that? How can we stay Christian for the long haul? Today Derek will conclude our series through 1 John by answering that question.

Ingrained in each of us is an understanding that the world is not as it should be. According to John, those who are born of God through faith in his Son, Jesus, will overcome the world. What does it look like to overcome? Is it winning at life, or is there something else, something more? How do we as followers of Jesus live the life God has promised in Jesus? It's only through faith and trust in God that we can live an overcoming life. Today Jeri brings the message.

Over and over the Bible says that God is love. The Bible also says that God's people are called to love those around us. Unfortunately, there has often been a breakdown somewhere, and the reputation of the Church is often not one of love. What is wrong? How do we fix it? Today, Derek talks about how we are called to experience the love of God in such a way that we would be able to give it away.

It is a common thing for people to attribute things to God, whether it's teaching, prophecy, or other occurrences. But what happens when contradictory things get attributed to God? How do we react when two people claim to speak for God but say opposite things? John's call in 1 John is for the church to discern what spirit is speaking before adopting a teaching. Today, Derek talks about how we can discern the spirit behind things.

God is love. This is one of the key values expressed in the book of 1 John as the author urges the readers to hold onto what is true. Hate is easily cultivated in our world, regardless of religious affiliation. But hate should have no place in Christ’s Church. To take it a step further, the author of 1 John reminds the readers that merely claiming to love is not enough. It’s easy to verbally communicate that we love someone or something, but do our actions follow suit? 1 John describes genuine love as costly, and Jesus modeled this as He laid down his life for us.

One of the more stunning reversals in scripture is the fact that on Good Friday the disciples of Jesus hid away, afraid for their lives, but only a short period of time later, they were boldly proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus. We are in a series called “Breakthrough” that is focused on understanding the Kingdom of God.
If we are followers of Jesus, we know that it is important to share our faith. But, if we're honest, often we struggle to talk about it. We tend to adopt a wrong picture of what it is to share the Gospel because we think of it only in terms of telling people. The Gospel Jesus modeled was not just telling; it was also showing. Today Derek talks about how we not only tell people about the Kingdom, but we also show people the Kingdom.

We are in a series called “Breakthrough” that is focused on understanding the Kingdom of God.
When asked by John whether Jesus was actually the Messiah, he responds by describing the miracles that were happening. The way the Kingdom shows up surprised everyone around. The Kingdom is full of surprises, and often our expectations are wrong. Today, Derek talks about this in a message called “The Surprising Kingdom”.

We are in a series called “Breakthrough” that is focused on understanding the Kingdom of God.
There are so many tensions presented to us in scripture. One of the biggest tensions is the one presented in the gospels that the Kingdom of God is already here, while at the same time the Kingdom of God is not yet here. Today Evan explores the Already-Not Yet nature of the Kingdom of God.

Today we are beginning a new series called “Breakthrough” that is focused on understanding the Kingdom of God.
One of the topics that will help you understand the Christian life in a much deeper and richer way is the Kingdom of God. Understanding the Kingdom of God gives us context for understanding why things are wrong in the world and how we can cooperate with Jesus to see the wrongs made right. Today, Derek is building a foundation for the series in a message called “Whose Side Are You On?”

This week is our Grand Opening in our new location.
Derek is beginning a new series called "Welcome to the Vineyard". This week he talks about how Jesus' vision for who is welcome in the church is filled with unexpected people. It's not the most religious that Jesus welcomes, but it is those who are humble enough to accept his invitation.

Today we finish our series in Nehemiah.
We all like the idea that we can be whatever we want. But when it comes to the Church, we inherit an identity and a mission. We are called to be a people that are marked by God’s presence. Nehemiah 10 contains a recommitment to the covenant to be a people of God’s presence. Today, Derek shows the commitments we must make to be a people marked by God’s presence.
Join us in person on September 26 for our Grand Opening in our new facility!
So often what makes a good person, a good endeavor, or a good company collapse isn't external circumstances. What frequently causes things to implode is internal issues that haven't been dealt with. In our pursuit of joining what God is doing, one of the critical things to constantly address is our own brokenness. As we continue our series in Nehemiah, Derek talks about how to address your own brokenness so that you can do all that God is calling you to do.
Today Jeri continues our series in Nehemiah. Anytime we try to do what God invites us into, we are going to face opposition. Jeri explains how God designs us to break through opposition.
Sorry for the gap in recordings!
This week Derek continues our series in Nehemiah. Everyone has a role to play, and nobody plays alone. As we head toward our September 26th Grand Opening in our new building, it will take everyone operating in their God-given role and assignment.

In our first week in the new building, Derek calls us to remember what God has done, recommit ourselves to serving the Lord, and lay down the idols that we have.
Today we finish our series on our third core value "We Pursue Wholeness with Authenticity".
Last week, Derek talked about how the first step in our pursuit of wholeness is worship. When we begin our pursuit of the Kingdom of God, we begin by worshiping Jesus. What follows worship is serving. Greatness in the Kingdom looks like serving those around you.
Today we are continuing our series on our third core value "We Pursue Wholeness with Authenticity".
After defining what we mean by pursuing wholeness and authenticity, it is helpful to take a look at how wholeness comes in our lives. There are many ways we can get off track if we don't do the first things first. This week Derek talks about worship as the critical first step toward wholeness.
Today we continue our series on our third core value "We Pursue Wholeness with Authenticity".
Authenticity is one of our culture's core values. So much so that one of the greatest things you can be in our culture today is completely authentic. That has become our cultural goal. For followers of Jesus, though, we understand that the ultimate goal is the Kingdom of God. We will not stop in our pursuit of the Kingdom until everything in and around us reflects God's rule and reign. But authenticity in our pursuit is actually helpful. Authenticity is the mechanism that humbles us and magnifies Jesus as we pursue the Kingdom. Today, Derek talks about why we don't just pursue wholeness, we pursue wholeness with authenticity.
Today, we are beginning a new series on our third core value: "We Pursue Wholeness with Authenticity". One of the ways we frequently fall short in life is we don't have the right measurement of success. We measure success by what we are comfortable with or by what we can conceive of. But as followers of Jesus, our measurement of success is nothing short of the Kingdom of God. Today Derek talks about the measurement of wholeness we pursue is the Kingdom of God.
As we wrap up our series on highly valuing outsiders, Jeri talks about the value of investing in children, who are often outsiders in our culture.
Taking a week break from our core value series, Derek brings us a Father's day message.
We are continuing our series on our second core value as a church "We Highly Value the Outsider".
When we think of highly valuing the outsider, we may have thoughts about people who want to be included but aren't. But what about those people who don't want to be included? How do we love those who actively oppose us? Today, Evan talks about loving our enemies.
As we look toward what God has in mind for Vineyard Altoona in the coming months and years, we want to be people who are primarily focused on the spread of the Gospel and loving people well. In this message, Betty talks about where we are headed as a church in the context of these things in a message called "Loving the Outsider like Jesus".
As we look toward what God has in mind for Vineyard Altoona in the coming months and years, we want to be people who are primarily focused on the spread of the Gospel and loving people well. In this message, Derek talks about where we are headed as a church in the context of these things in a message called "Becoming All Things to All People".
We have a special guest for this week, Larry Fulmer! Larry is the senior pastor at the Salvation Army, serving with his wife, Ashley Fulmer.
Larry brings us the story of the amazing faith of the centurion and how his faith was not hindered by the chaos of the situation but was transfixed on Jesus.
Today we finish our series "Keep In Step".
One of the things we all so desperately need in our day is wisdom. We search all over the place for counsel that will help us navigate life well. As we seek to be people who join what God is doing, Derek talks about how we can have access to God's wisdom by the Spirit of God.
Today we are continuing our series called "Keep in Step".
Each and every one of us is given gifts by God when we begin life as a follower of Jesus. For so many of us, though, we either don't know that to be true, or we don't know the extent to which we are to use them. In this message, Derek talks about how we receive gifts, the humility they should produce, and the gratitude to God we demonstrate when we use them to the fullest extent God intends.
We've said frequently that we, as a church, want to join what God is doing. It's a core value that we hold. One of the foundational pieces of being able to join what God is doing involves hearing God communicate with us. If we want to keep in step with the Spirit of God and join God in all times and spaces, we need to cultivate a posture to hear God speak to us. Today Derek talks about how we can orient ourselves to be receptive when God speaks.
Today we are continuing our series called "Keep in Step".
As the Vineyard, we want to be 'right now' people. People who follow God and do what He is doing, even when it looks unfavorable or risky. Evan shows us in the story of Peter and Jesus walking on water the reason for our fervency in doing what God is doing. To be "right now" people is to know and magnify Jesus.
Today we are starting a new series called "Keep in Step".
Now that we have resumed in-person Sunday morning worship gatherings, what is important? What is God doing with us? Who are we going to become? Does everything just go back to normal? Today Derek begins this new series talking about being a people who keep in step with the Holy Spirit and how this connects to the season we are in as a church.
What is the significance of the resurrection of Jesus? Does it matter if it really happened? Can we even know for sure? As we celebrate Easter at Vineyard Altoona, Derek answers all of these questions and more!
Today we are continuing our series for Lent called "Have Mercy on Us".
Sometimes our preconceived notions of what God is going to do gets in the way of what God is actually doing. As we look to next Sunday's celebration of Easter, Jeri invites us one more time to open ourselves to God to be formed into people who can engage in the mission of God in humility.
Today we are continuing our series for Lent called "Have Mercy on Us".
Confirmation bias is the human tendency to prefer information that confirms what we've already decided while suppressing information that contradicts it. Every one of us is prone to confirmation bias. The Jewish leaders had been waiting for the Messiah for centuries, but when Jesus shows up as the Messiah, he doesn't look like they decided he should. Consequently, the very people who have been waiting for the Messiah end up missing Jesus. We all have a confirmation bias that seeks to affirm what we've already decided. But what if our confirmation bias causes us to miss the invitation of Jesus? Derek's message today is called "How Could We Miss Jesus?"
Today we are continuing our series for Lent called "Have Mercy on Us".
Elizabeth Ebling, one of our very own, will be bringing the third message in this series. She encourages us to not only walk with our God, toward justice and mercy, but doing so with humility.
Today we are continuing our series for Lent called "Have Mercy on Us".
We all love good stories of kindness, where someone does something for someone in need. When God calls us to repentance, one of the things He calls us to be is people who love mercy. We are called to be people who not only do kindness but love to do merciful acts for people. We all have plenty of reasons we could give for why we don't do that, but God invites us to experience His mercy so that we might be people who could love to extend mercy everywhere. Today Derek talks about what it means to love mercy.
Today we are continuing our series for Lent called "Have Mercy on Us".
Lent is a season of repentance where we intentionally allow God to search us to remove from our lives things that don't belong. When God calls us to repentance, He calls us to become the people He created us to be. One of the foundational things God calls us to be is people who actively do justice. Today, Derek talks about what it means to do justice as we dig deeper into Micah 6:8.
Today we are beginning a new series for Lent called "Have Mercy on Us".
Lent has been referred to as "spiritual spring cleaning". It's a season where we intentionally open ourselves to God to allow him to point out areas of our lives that don't align with who he has called us to be. Because this is true, Lent is a season where we are offered an invitation by God to repent, or turn around, from the ways we live life contrary to who God created us to be. Today, as we begin Lent, Derek talks about what repentance is and explains that holiness looks like humility before God, and justice and mercy toward those around us.
This week we finish our series "CORE", which is a look at the foundations of who we are as Christians and as a church.
We all long to know that our lives have meaning and purpose. We want to do something that matters. If we are Christians, we know that we find meaning, fulfillment, and purpose in doing things that God designed us to do. We often refer to that as calling. But so many people struggle to know what God's calling for their lives is. Maybe we don't even believe we are able to be called. In this message, Derek talks about what it means to be a called people by looking at the kind of people God calls into Kingdom service.
This week we continue our series "CORE", which is a look at the foundations of who we are as Christians and as a church.
We've spent a few weeks building a base of who we are, why we exist, and the values that dictate how we conduct our mission, which is to equip people for Kingdom release. With all of that in place, how does someone begin to walk out the life we've been called to? If we've already begun to walk out the life, how do we continue in the life. In this message, Derek talks about how everything in the Kingdom comes by grace and surrender.
This week we continue our series "CORE", which is a look at the foundations of who we are as Christians and as a church.
So much of our culture is concerned with appearance. Social media is all about putting out an appearance of who we want people to think that we are. We've become conditioned to polishing our image. But God has so much more in store for us. He desires for us to actually be on the inside the kind of people that we portray on the outside. We believe that the best way for us to become those people is not to hide who we actually are or pretend we don't struggle, but rather we live out authentic, vulnerable lives that are pursuing the wholeness God has called us to live in. Today, Evan expands on our third core value "We pursue wholeness with authenticity".
This week we continue our series "CORE", which is a look at the foundations of who we are as Christians and as a church.
It seems like all across our culture today people get cast as the outsider. The experience of being an outsider is common among most people. We know what it feels like. But God's desire has always been to bring the outsider in, to welcome those who are on the margins. So as we follow Jesus, we too are to be people who extend welcome and hospitality to those who are outsiders and marginalized. Today, Derek talks about Vineyard Altoona's core value 'We Highly Value the Outsider'.
This week we continue our new series "CORE", which is a look at the foundations of who we are as Christians and as a church.
When it comes to making decisions, people have all kinds of strategies. Some choose to do what makes them happy. Some choose to do what is most expedient. Some choose to do what will give the biggest bang for the buck. All of these choices have one thing in common: they leave us in control. But what we see in the Bible is that being a Christian means we have handed over control of our lives to Jesus. So when it comes to making choices about our lives, we defer to what God desires. As a church, that is to be our posture. Today, Derek talks about Vineyard Altoona's core value 'We Join What God Is Doing'.
This week we continue our new series "CORE", which is a look at the foundations of who we are as Christians and as a church.
One of the most misunderstood words around the Christian faith is the word 'church'. We all assume we know what it is, and we all have our own ideas about why it exists. But do we actually know what God intends for the Church? What is the purpose of the Church of Jesus Christ? What is the purpose of Vineyard Altoona? Today, Derek talks about the purpose of God's people, the Church, in the world, and in particular our church.
This week we begin our new series "CORE", which is a look at the foundations of who we are as Christians and as a church.
Story is so powerful. The story that you are living helps you answer all the big questions of life: Where do I come from? Who am I? What's wrong with the world? How does what's wrong get fixed? As people, we often need to be reminded of the story that we are living. For those who follow Jesus, we have inherited the story of the Bible as our story. In this message, Derek talks about the biblical foundations of our story.
