"Although it doesn't make sense now, I know one day it will," and today is that day. In this episode, I reflect back on an internship I was supposed to do, that didn't end up working out, that still changed my life either way. Not to give too much away, but let's just say I was on the line for $12K on an Airbnb when I needed to decide...
Now, 2 months out of when that internship would've ended, here's the episode:
1:46 Brief background of situation
5:22 The moment I realized I wasn't going to do it
8:47 The perspective gained from realizing "I should've been in ___ right now"

In a fantastic roundtable-style discussion with Mike and Hunter, I ask them to reflect on their most recent jobs and what their journey taught them. In the high turnover field of strength and conditioning/sports performance, I ask and they answer some very real questions we all face.
Mike and Hunter met coaching at UC Davis, Mike went private to TCBoost Sports Performance, Hunter went professional to the Sacramento Kings, and now they're back in college at Illinois State and Arizona State, respectively.
An honest and candid conversation with some great coaches and better friends, I hope you enjoy.
-5:59 Why did you want to switch from each of your previous jobs to the next one?
-28:49 What was one thing when switching jobs that was a positive challenge (fulfilling) and one that was a negative challenge?
-41:40 What was the biggest lesson learned from each of your previous spots?
-57:39 Why did destiny kept you at each previous job as long as it did, despite maybe wanting to leave earlier?

If I typed out all the lessons, that would defeat the purpose of the episode, right? Here's a top quote from each lesson.
-2:02 #1 "It's valuable for yourself as a coach, but also on the flip side for the athlete, to describe 'hey, I love the big goals, let's break it down into a little bit smaller goals. I think it'd be super impressive, based on where you're currently starting at, let's shoot for this first."
-5:44 #2 "At the end of the day, to be good at your sport, you have to be good at your sport. So how do we do things, work on things in training, for the sport that actually go towards the sport?"
-9:01 #3 "Why are we here? Are we here to get really good at that one medball throw or hurdle jump variation? Or are we here to get better at the sport?"
-15:40 Bonus "All of the athletes who are also good, do the same things. You can't do the minimums if you want maximum results"

You owe it to yourself as a professional to become the best consumer of social media as possible. This isn't for casual scrolling, this is for the people you intentionally follow and the content you intentionally seek out to help yourself become the best version of you as a professional you can be. Listen to this full episode to learn the perspective and context it takes to maximize your social media consumption.
0:32 Why becoming a better consumer of social media matters
1:14 The weird times we live in, inspired by Bret Contreras on a different podcast: the ones who are actually experts/good at what they do are rarely the ones who look the best on social media
2:16 Creating context. What's your context and what's their context?
4:12 First big red flag...WHO DO YOU TRAIN???
6:25 Next red flags: have you heard their voice, TOO many followers..., bold claims/clickbait, too narrow of content/lack of big picture
10:23 Green flag: what would you expect good social media of someone in your similar situation/situation you aspire to be look like?
11:18 Green flags: training similar population, give good logic and reason (even if don't have a similar population), not too buzz-wordy/easy to consume
15:21 Take home points: What's your truth vs their truth, tying everything back to the big picture, it's OK to be critical, how to implement things you consume

Being a coach (sports performance, strength and conditioning, etc.) and within coaching a lot there are going to be good and bad days, just like any other job, in contrast to the somewhat monotonous training day/week. That combined with the classic imposter syndrome creates quite an interesting emotional rollercoaster. A little different of an episode, here's an honest confession about recent feelings I've been having on this topic. Hopefully at the end of this you feel heard and understood with some thoughts as to what you can do about feelings like this.

“As long as I’m clear about the impact I’m trying to make, that’s not necessarily dictated by where I’m at. It’s allows me to be anywhere and making that sort of impact.” -Steve Breitenstein (#88)
“No matter what your personal philosophy is, whether you’ve defined it or not, you have one, and you live one. And people are going to see what your philosophy is by what you do." -Kyle Voigt (#59, #63)

There are often many solutions to our problems not only outside of our actual field, but even within our field just a sector or two over. It's important as a professional to get outside of your own echo-chamber because that's where perspective and future innovation is. In this episode, I share three of a biggest lessons I believe every professional in sports performance can learn from coaching in the private sector to help them level up. Spurring from the unique challenges of this sector, this different perspective is sure to get your brain going on how you can maximize your impact no matter where you are.

There's a theme that has led Dr. John Abbott to the path of his PhD and consequent coaching/sport science which has brought him to the Chicago Cubs: always have a plan. And not that plans don't change, but the diligence and intent behind making a plan leads to preparedness which leads to execution. Multiple of his stories encapsulated how his success achieved in the moment was the result of his preparation before hand. Then it led to more responsibility, more opportunities, and so on. A challenge all coaches face is the limited time they have with their athletes. But what if you can use that time together to also impact the time when they're on their own? Using a "question-based-interaction coaching style" is an awesome tool for you to use to help accomplish that. Not to give it away, but changing how you use your words, coaching, and interactions to this new style can greatly affect your athletes by helping them learn how to coach themselves. This is something I've been experimenting with, I've learned a lot, and I've seen a big improvement in my athletes. Empowering you to take control of your story!

With the recent trend of sport science, I condense my previous and current sport science experiences into a podcast summarizing the biggest concepts when it comes to not only understanding but actually integrating sport science. "What do I believe in as a sport scientist?" and "What are common themes I say when talking about sport science with others?" were questions that guided this episode. Nicely put into 3 concepts (and a quick bonus), hopefully this will shed some light and add some perspective to your current understanding of sport science and help you more effectively implementing it into your job as a professional.

Intervention-based speed and agility coaching is a spin on coaching to give the athlete what they need day. Inspired by conversations with Lee Taft and Steve Breitenstein, this concept begs the question "are we coaching the program or are we coaching the athlete?" It's not a matter of calling it "evidence-based" or not, it's a matter of what it means and the actions it drives. Let's get better together #TSPnation!

Essentially, sports on this "let's do what we want until we get a wake-up call (often an injury), then let's ask questions" process. Although it's partly understandable why this is, it's impossible to answer those questions without any baseline/assessment data, and that's how to fix it. Let's get better together!

In the 30th edition of The Talking Shop Podcast, I elaborate on a 10-paragraph article that completely rocked my brain. It was recommended to me by someone in my network and I believe it's exactly the type of content is needed in today's sports performance world. It's easier to talk about what's great and how to optimize what's already good; but true improvement comes from honest evaluation of what's sub-optimal and how to improve that. Let's get better together! Link to the article:

The checklist goes like this: (1) your values, (2) being on the field, (3) understanding the game, (4) the skill. Get your pen and paper out! Let's get better together!

What an awesome opportunity I have to share my experiences and the experiences of others in sports performance and professional development. What you can get out of my experiences: there's so many people in your circle that have had awesome opportunities relevant (ish) to what you want to do, not to mention experiences not relevant to your profession but can still help you change/improve your perspective, go ask them! Let's get better together!
In the 25th edition of The Talking Shop Podcast I summarize the 5 most recent interviews. This is for those of you that want the big talking points to either help them commit to listening to the full episode or want the big talking points without listening to the full thing. In the 23rd edition of The Talking Shop Podcast, I talk shop with my own twin brother Anthony Tometz. Anthony is a middle school math teacher and has been doing so for two years. Since coaching and teaching are both similar professions, Anthony shares a lot of interesting perspectives when it comes to teaching philosophy, interacting with students, and having a growth mindset. Something a little different, but very relatable. Let's get better together! Here's what was mentioned in the episode:
-Insight by Tasha Eurich
In the 22nd edition of The Talking Shop Podcast, I share a simple organization scheme/pyramid to help organize core values. These are categories of core values that you can use to help personalize your own pyramid and/or your athletes' pyramid. If we are a summation of our decisions, core values help us make those decisions; that's why this episode will go very far for you. I explain my own as an athlete and a person. Listen to the episode for the explanations but this is how the pyramids go:
-From bottom to top: larger purpose, gratitude, growth mindset, fitness/training/nutrition, game identity, momentum management
-My own pyramid: larger purpose, gratitude, growth mindset, authenticity/sophistication/passion, personal development, professional development, emotional intelligence
I'd love to hear your feedback. Let's get better together!
In the 21st episode of The Talking Shop Podcast I chat with the Senior Sport Scientist and Research Analyst of Total Sport Diagnostics, Alexa Lobato. In the 16th edition of The Talking Shop Podcast I discuss everything about research: the study design process and the literature consumption process. There's actually many parallels that make research like social media. This isn't to say all research is bad or that we don't need it, research is very important, but learning how to more effectively consume it by understanding the behind-the-scenes of research is a good first place to start. Let's get better together.
In the 15th edition of The Talking Shop Podcast I go through my presentation about my experience as a sport scientist, aimed towards helping others start implementing sport science into their own situation. A good understanding of the why and selecting an effective what, essentially what I talk about in this episode, will go so much further than jumping into sport science just because it's increasing in popularity. Remember, we can all get better together. What was mentioned:
-Mike Tuchsherer's Emerging Strategies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdGP120e4B0

In the 12th edition of The Talking Shop Podcast I make a second version of explaining the what and why behind my podcast. There were some thoughts/comments that I missed on the first take (#1) and with a few interviews under my belt I elaborate on those at well. Short, sweet, and to the point. Remember, we can all get better together.
In the 11th edition of The Talking Shop Podcast I chat with the always smiling Meg Conger. She's an absolute stud Crossfitter but her background in sports, in combination with an unfortunate injury, have led her to where she is today. With the lens of a sport psychologist, she has a lot of interesting perspectives about where to get the most value out of training for sports. Remember, we can all get better together.

In the 9th edition of The Talking Shop Podcast I share my 5 tips I've accumulated over 2 years of posting on social media as a coach/content creator. This isn't to say I'm an expert, or that I have it all figured out, but this is geared towards utilizing social media to build a following; personal social media accounts to not apply. I could list all my tips here...but that would defeat the point of the point! Check it out. Remember, we can all get better together.
In the 8th edition of The Talking Shop Podcast I chat with my co-worker JRod. His almost 10 years in the sports performance world has given him so many different experiences that have led him to have a ton of interesting ideas and opinions on coaching. Largely molded by his athletic training background, JRod is huge on preparing athletes. Additionally, he talks a lot about adding value to his athletes both in and beyond the training session. Remember, we can all get better together.
In the 7th edition of The Talking Shop Podcast I chat with my good friend from undergrad Trey Osterholt. He has a science background and is currently doing some pretty fancy stuff for the National Institutes of Health out in DC. Here's some things we mentioned:
https://www.training.nih.gov/programs/postbac_irta
the supplement he mentioned was "phosphatidylserine"
Remember, we can all get better together.
In the 6th episode of TSP I talk about everything you need to know about pursuing, obtaining, and utilizing certifications in the sports performance field. I go through my 5 main points about this topic: driver's license, relevance, scope of practice, investment, and experience. To sum it up, you need a driver's license to drive but having your license doesn't make you a good driver, that's where experience comes in. Remember, we can all get better together.
In the fifth episode of The Talking Shop Podcast I chat with my good friend Michaela Mooney. She has a variety of experiences in the fitness world ranging from CrossFit, to college softball, to wanting to be a physical education teacher. However, she's had a recent change to wanting to be in special education. All these experiences have accumulated to a lot of unique perspectives that I think everyone could get something out of.
In the fourth episode of The Talking Shop Podcast I discuss the major downfalls of social media and how to beat them. The barrier for entry to post on social media is extremely low and how easy it is to get someone's content in front of your eyes is just a matter of dollars. Expertise in sports performance goes way beyond social media and being flashy. Learn to evaluate and pursue their content off of social media. Remember, we can all get better together.
In the 3rd episode of The Talking Shop Podcast I'm going to take a dive into, and give examples about, what this thing called "context" means. With content being thrown at you from all directions about sports performance nowadays, it's important to develop your lens for how you can get the most out of what you consume to apply to your individual situation.
In the second episode of the talking shop podcast I share my story of undergrad, to grad school, to a potential PhD, to talking shop with a sport coach that has helped shaped how I think about sport science. This illustrates how everything I've learned and have been advised to do has been combined for quite the story and some awesome professional development advice.
In the first episode of The Talking Shop Podcast I discuss what this podcast is about and how I'm going to go about developing and publishing future episodes. This is attempting to evoke discussion and challenge what you and I believe in through conversation.
