Beverly Willett is the author of “Disassembly Required: A Memoir of Midlife Resurrection,” a June 2022 pick by the world’s largest book club and nominated for Georgia Author of the year. From rural schoolgirl, to big city entertainment lawyer, to stay-at-home mom, securely ensconced in a fashionable part of Brooklyn, Beverly Willett achieved the American Dream. And then it came crashing down. But as she reluctantly put her dream house for sale, surrendering her hopes for a life that hadn’t turned out the way she imagined, the world opened back up. And Willett leapt toward it, embracing uncertainty. Kirkus Reviews called her memoir a “triumphant journey to new beginnings.”

Willett has also written for the nation’s top publications including The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, AARP Magazine, The Guardian, and more. In 2016, she gave a popular Tedx Talk entitled “How to Begin Again.” At work on her first novel, Willett now makes her home in Savannah, Georgia.

Mississippi native Karen Hinton is the author of Penis Politics: A Memoir of Women, Men & Power. Her memoir is about how girls and women are impacted by sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, abuse and discrimination, told only through colorful, funny and tragic stories about herself and the girls and women she knew from age 16 to 61. People Magazine recently featured Karen's story, which also has been covered extensively in other broadcast and print media. Her website, www.penis-politics.com, provides additional media, as well as a number of book reviews.

Penis Politics has been called a "Stand by Me for girls” with its evocative story of four teenage girls, growing up in small town Mississippi in the 1970s, harboring a secret that reverberates through their lives. One of the girls, the shining star among Karen and her friends, is raped by a school official in the bookroom; she quits school and commits suicide years later. Karen leaves Mississippi for a career in journalism and politics, but the echoes of Mississippi are never far behind her as she becomes a powerful public relations and political operative in Washington and New York City.

She served as a communications aide to many Democratic politicians. She was a press secretary for former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, former Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo, the late DNC Chair Ronald Brown, and former U.S. Congressman Mike Espy, the first Black Congressman from Mississippi since Reconstruction in 1986.

Known for never ducking a fight, Hinton was at the peak of her career when a catastrophic brain injury from a freak accident confronted her with the battle of her life. Emerging from a coma, learning to walk and talk again, Hinton was determined to “speak up, not shut up” on issues involving women, men and power in politics.

Hinton regularly contributes guest columns to the New York Daily News and other publications, focusing on the topics of #MeToo, sexual harassment in politics and skewering big oil, big banks and other bullies whenever possible. Earlier in her career, Hinton was a journalist in Mississippi and Colorado, a cocktail waitress in Aspen and a high school teacher in Mississippi.

Susan Salenger is the author and researcher behind Sidelined, How Women Manage & Mismanage Their Health. Sidelined examines the many ways in which some women manage and sometimes mismanage their healthcare. (Release date, April, 2022). Susan explores how women, typically the medical gatekeepers for their families, tend to be extremely conscientious about taking care of themselves, yet at the same time inadvertently undermine their own care. They often hesitate to call the doctor when they don’t feel well and worry that their doctor visit will take time away from their families or work. They may hesitate to ask doctors the necessary questions and don’t always comply with the doctor’s instructions. Salenger’s research reveals how conflicted many women are about the medical decisions they ultimately make.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Susan attended UCLA to study English. After graduation, she worked alongside her husband Fred for 25 years at their production company, Salenger Films, which produced corporate training and development films distributed worldwide. Today, at age 79, Susan lives in Northern California to be near her incredible family which includes her two daughters, four grandchildren, a cat named Max and a dog named JD (Salenger). When she is not speaking about her book or spending time with family and friends, you will find Susan power lifting to stay in shape.

While helping her friends, who were smart and successful women, she noticed many didn’t have the knowledge and confidence to manage their personal finances well. In 2011, Lisa Weldon cut a map of Manhattan into 20 pieces and walked one piece per day until she covered the entire island. After walking each day, she came home and recorded her findings in her blog, then shared her words and photos through social media. It was from this experience that she learned the power of storytelling.

The next year, she spent thirty days walking every arrondissement of Paris. Huffington Post invited her to chronicle her walks, then published her first submission on the front cover of their “Living Fearlessly” section. Oprah’s network, Harpo Productions, caught wind of her walks and invited her to give Cindy Crawford advice on turning 50.

And now? She's just released her memoir. It’s the story of a 58-year-old woman who reinvents herself by taking 30 days to walk through the pieces of her life.

Dinah Lin's life exemplifies her message: “It’s Never too Late!” She didn’t begin her career until age 36 (after being a full time mom for 15 years), received her MBA from Columbia Business School at age 40 then began climbing the corporate ladder - finally “breaking the glass ceiling” when she became a corporate Vice President at a Fortune 500. At age 58, she made the decision to move to Beijing to study Chinese and reconnect with her roots. A year turned into a decade, as she witnessed the transformation of China.

After returning from Beijing, Dinah finally realized a long held dream, publishing her best selling memoir, “Daring to Dream Once Again - It’s Never Too Late!” at the age of 73! The title, she says, is her challenge to herself, as she almost gave up her dream of writing a book, and she has a great story about this.

A bit more about Dinah’s background, she was born in Shanghai and grew up in a small town in Ohio where they were the only Asian family. As a young wife and mother she lived for 15 years in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.

Prior to moving to Beijing in 2000, Dinah was an international executive and entrepreneur with two decades of experience ranging from high-tech start-ups to Fortune 500 companies.

Dinah also served as an appointed senior official in the George H.W. Bush administration from 1989-1992 in Washington, D.C.

Glenda K. Harrison, owner of Being: Jewelry & Accessories, author and Wholistic Stylist. She calls herself Wholistic because of her in depth approach to Style, where she believes it pertains to the entire person - Soul, Mind, Body, and of course, Wardrobe. Her passion for the art of getting dressed was cultivated by her mother who allowed her to spend countless hours playing dress-up in her wardrobe, and by her maternal grandmother who indulged her granddaughters with beautiful jewelry. A graduate from the prestigious Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, she grew-up knowing fashion would one day have a special place in her life.

Glenda soon began an introspective journey which led to her first published book, a personal memoir titled, A Place Called Peace. In her story she shares how painful life lessons can lead to growth and triumph in her journey to find peace and wholeness. After her journey of self-discovery, she took on the behemoth task of giving substance to the meaning of style with her second book, TRUE STYLE: A Look Beyond the Surface - where she cleverly unravel the traits, as well as the wardrobe mastery, and then I beautifully weaves together the person who encompasses this multi-layered word called, Style.

In 2018 she launched STYLE with Glenda K. Harrison, an entire platform devoted to helping women become the masters of their true style, and on February 7, 2020, her passion came full-circle with the launch of Being: Jewelry & Accessories - an homage to the time spent relishing her grandmother's jewelry collection.*

In this episode, Kim interviews authors Leslie Inman & Roxanne Jones about their new book "Voices on the Other Side of Retirement."

Leslie Inman:

Leslie’s area of expertise is marketing and sales—and she has an exceptional track record of cultivating new markets and boosting sales, often achieved by applying novel approaches.

Leslie brings an important qualification to Retirement Voices: she is a serial retiree, having retired three times, with her most recent retirement in 2017. This has given her a deep understanding of the intricacies of this transition, and the ability to relate to women who are moving into and through this phase of life.

Leslie is a member of the Authors Guild, the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance, AARP and The Transition Network. She is a Legacy Scholar at the University of New England’s Center for Excellence in Aging and Health. She lives in Harpswell, Maine.

Roxanne Jones:

Roxanne is an award-winning freelance writer nationally recognized for her expertise in crafting content for hospitals and other healthcare organizations across the U.S. In 2015, Roxanne launched Boomer Haiku, a popular weekly blog that took a humorous and slightly irreverent look at life as a baby boomer, acquiring nearly 5,000 monthly visitors during its 3-year run.

A baby boomer herself, she’s now downshifting into semi-retirement. As a result, she’s keenly attuned to the emotional and practical challenges this transition poses for the women in the Retirement Voices community.

Roxanne is a member of the Authors Guild, the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance, and AARP. She lives in Cumberland Foreside, Maine.

While I believe that there are times to quit things like smoking or a bad relationship, for example, something I hope you never quit on is your health and wellness because your health is your greatest wealth and you’re the body you’re in right now is the one you’re going to be with for the rest of your life.

So, we might as well make friends with it, right?

What do you do when you feel like quitting, though?

Merideth Schutter is the Founder of PROtect. Smart Personal Safety. She was in the Vancouver real estate game for over a decade. It was a career she loved for numerous reasons, but primarily for the flexibility to raise her three children, work with fantastic buyers and sellers and earn commission sales on her own schedule.

As a remote worker, Merideth often felt vulnerable and alone on the job -- at open houses and on tour with new clients. This is when she created PROtect. Smart Personal Safety to help empower remote workers, solopreneurs, students, online daters and, of course, realtors on a global scale. Offering PROtect to enterprise clients as a custom branded product who wish to create a culture of caring and togetherness for their employees is at the root of Merideth’s mission for deeper corporate responsibility and safer workplaces.

Kim chats with "Brain Candy" author Deirdre Timmons about her book.

Writing is about the only thing Deirdre can do. She’s done it a lot for the past twenty years — for newspapers (remember those?), magazines, the Information Super Highway and movies that were never made. That is not quite fair. She directed a doc on burlesque, A Wink and a Smile. That forever ruined her appreciation for live theater — if no clothes come off, what’s the point? Deirdre lives in Seattle.

Dinah is now living her latest dream, being an inspirational speaker and best selling author of “Daring to Dream Once Again - It’s Never Too Late!”

Dinah’s life exemplifies her message: beginning her career at age 36 (after being a full time mom for 15 years), getting her MBA from Columbia Business School at age 40, climbing the corporate ladder and finally “breaking the glass ceiling” to become Vice President at a Fortune 500, before moving to Beijing at age 58 to study Chinese and reconnect with her roots. A year turned into a decade, as she witnessed the unprecedented transformation of China. Dinah escaped with her family on the last boat out of Shanghai in 1949.

She grew up in a small town in Ohio where they were the only Asian family. Early marriage and motherhood dashed her dream of becoming a diplomat working to improve relations between the U.S. and China. She has always felt a deep sense of gratitude for being both Chinese and American. Prior to moving to Beijing in 2000, Ms. Lin was an international executive and entrepreneur with two decades of experience ranging from high-tech start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. Her expertise include marketing, corporate communications and international business development.

Dinah also served as an appointed senior official in the George H.W. Bush administration from 1989-1992 in Washington, D.C.

In this episode, Kim asks Dinah to share how she's made her dreams realities throughout her life and even to this day at age 77.

Widowed at the age of 50, Judy Freedman has been reinventing herself for more than a decade. She started blogging in 2007, when she was approaching her 50th birthday. Her original blog, A Year To 50, captured her feelings as she approached this milestone midlife age.

It was a life-changing year for her when her 24 year marriage ended after her husband took ill and passed away two weeks shy of her 50th. Shortly after losing her spouse, she also became an empty-nester when her daughter graduated from college and her son graduated from high school.

Her readers wanted to know what was going to happen to her after this significant loss, so Judy created the now award-winning blog, A Baby Boomer Women’s Life After 50, targeted to the millions of baby boomer women (born between 1945 – 1964) who are going through a similar life journey in mind, body and spirit.

Join Kim as she asks Judy to share five things she learned in her 50s.

After establishing her career in the public health system in Canada, Kim Hall recognized a gap in the provision of in-home, private-pay rehabilitation services. She started Physio2U in 2012, and has lead its growth to become the largest in-home physical therapy company in Western Canada. Since Kim is a trained physical therapist, she has worked hard to develop her business acumen, leadership and entrepreneur skills.

In 2016, she was winner of Western Canada for the Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards and in 2017 she was recognized as a YWCA Women of Distinction for Entrepreneurship. Kim also contributes to her industry as a member of the Board of Directors for the College of Physical Therapists of BC and as a mentor for internationally educated physiotherapists through the University of British Columbia.

Kim can relate to many women in mid-life as she has recovered from a painful divorce, cared for her ailing parents who have both passed away all while starting and scaling a business with 20+ staff members.

Darla Andrews developed a passion for fitness at the age of 19 and began teaching group fitness classes at a small gym in San Diego. At 22 years old, she had her first daughter and by the age of 40 she had her fifth daughter.

By age 40 she had let taking care of herself go by the wayside. She was overweight, tired and not happy with how she looked or felt. She got herself back into shape, found her passion for fitness again and transformed both her body and her life.

Her journey back to getting herself in shape, led her to realize that there are no limits to what can be done when you push beyond what you think you can do. At age 49, she competed in her first figure competition and became an NPC National Masters Figure Champion and at age 51, earned her Pro Card in the INBA and placed second in the 2015 Natural Olympia.

In 2009, Tricia Kershaw started Kershaw Consulting engaging clients such as Interior Designers, Architects and International Furniture Designers. Recognizing something was missing she followed her heart and her passion which was helping seniors, so she moved into the fastest growing industry in North America…. Senior Living.

Her passion for seniors started in high school volunteering at long-term care residences and then later in life helping her own family members. She soon learned how challenging it could be for seniors trying to navigate appointments, paperwork, and phone calls where you rarely talked to a live body and just basically trying to understand what was needed in order to move forward in what was considered retirement.

Tricia followed her passion, loves dealing with seniors on a daily basis, and is currently working for Amica Senior Lifestyles in Vancouver, BC.

In this episode, I asked Tricia:

  • Tell us your story on how you started doing what you do.
  • When’s a good time to start considering assisted living options for your parents?
  • What’s important when looking for a place?
  • What should one look for when visiting places?
  • What questions are good to ask?

For more information about Amica Senior Lifestyles visit: https://amica.ca

One of the things Tricia said during the podcast was for family members to get their paperwork in order: Power of Attorney and Representation Agreement (speaks to medical, is required in BC). Here’s the description and weblink for the Rep Agreement:

A Representation Agreement is the key legal document in British Columbia for personal planning/advance care planning. It is a legally enforceable document and used in case of incapacity, for end-of-life, and other support needs.

Krys Pappius is a Lifestyle Design Coach and Transformation Catalyst. Her mission is to help women 45+ create juicy lives.

In 2003, Krys was living what many would call “a good life”. She was in her 9th year of a

career as a police officer, a stable, well-paying job, she owned her home and car, she had

no debt, and she was an avid traveler.

Then a serious car crash woke her up. After facing possible death, she realized that while

she had all the trappings of success, her life was unfulfilling and boring. Krys began a

journey to transform her unfulfilling life into one that was self-directed, interesting, colorful

and even slightly scandalous.

Her 10-year search for a juicy life lead to the discovery that anything is possible when you

get really clear on what your dream life would look like, clarify and own what you are really

made of and capable of achieving, and live with purpose.

Krys’ passion is to share what she has learned with success-driven and adventurous women who feel stuck and uncertain as they look to the future. Krys believes that midlife and beyond is a great time to be alive because, absent any socially set milestones or traditions, we get to do life on our own terms, if we just take the time to clarify what we want and implement the changes that need to be made to get us the results that we want.

First through teaching women how to have beautiful skin and how to make the most of their features with the proper makeup application, then through mentoring them to reach their goals in their own Mary Kay businesses.

For the last 13 years as a volunteer with the Look Good Feel Better program she has facilitated sessions for women undergoing cancer treatment because she believes that we all feel better when we look better. 5 years ago she also started volunteering at the North Shore Hospice for the Everyday Counts program where women get makeup, hair and then a keepsake portrait.

She offers women she meets a complimentary 1 hour skin care and makeover session where she finds the right products and colors for their skin and they leave looking and feeling beautiful with tips on how to recreate the looks themselves. She knows that “When you take care of yourself and feel good about yourself, you have more to give to others.”

In this episode, Kim asks Monica:

  • What's make-up for?
  • What are some concerns you get from midlife women about make-up?
  • What are some tips you can share?
