With half the Crew out on assignment at AX2019 (to be covered in more detail next episode), Gwyn and Tony take some time out to discuss Trigger's latest theatrical offering, Promare, which recently topped 1 billion yen at the Japanese box-office.
According to Tony though, Promare might not be as original a production as many think and may actually have its origins in a Kabuki production that few outside of Japan know about...
Promare's lead writer, Kazuki Nakashima is also an active contributor to the Shinkansen Kabuki Troupe.
Many of the major plot elements of Promare seem to take inspiration from one of the troupe's more famous productions, Aterui (pictured).

It's been a good two decades since we last saw Ryo Saeba and crews latest antics in animated form grace our screens (no, we don't talk about Angel Heart around here).
City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes hit Japanese cinemas on February 8 and appears to have struck a nostalgic chord with audiences since some cinemas are still screening it over two months later. Shinjuku itself has been caught in the grip of mokkori fever, with collaboration cafes, and promotions all over the place - some pictures of which I've included below.
But how does the movie stack up? Does it try to reinvent everyone's favorite lecherous sweeper for 2019 or does it stick to doing what Ryo does best?Tune in to find out!

The (first?) Flying Dog Festival included many moments one wouldn't normally expect at an event supposedly held to celebrate 10 years of the Flying Dog record label. Like Kouichi "Spike" Yamadera barking on stage, or 13,000 people roaring to video's of Gunbuster, or name dropping the Bahamut from Megazone 23, or Shoji Kawamori giving a short lecture to a packed sports stadium on the history of Macross.
On the other hand, much of what fans were expecting didn't necessarily happen as planned, with Yoko Kanno pulling out of the event on hours before the doors opened due to a bad bout of influenza.
So what happened? How did things go down? Join us this episode to find out!

This episode, following bribes involving copious amounts of pizza, we gather a panel of experts, academics and industry insiders to try come up with an answer to this question which is as old as anime fandom itself (spoiler alert - we fail spectacularly).
Featuring special guests Callum May from The Canipa Effect, Kim Morrissy from Anime News Network, Craig Norris from the University of Tasmania and the SpeakerPODcast Crew.

In case you’re wondering, the title of this episode refers to the series of Macross nooks we found while visiting Macross The Art (pictured above).
Similarly, this episode is a series of reports and discoveries the likes of which have never been covered by a single podcast ever before!
We visit Macross the Art, uncover long-lost VF-0 lineart, hear a live audio commentary by Shoji Kawamori himself and learn all about the making of the notorious SDFM episode “Phantasm”.
But that’s just the beginning! We then meet conductor Kenichi Shimura and experience Yoko Kanno’s BGM work on Macross Frontier performed by a full orchestra. After that, it’s time to talk to the scenario writer of Macross, Kenichi Matsuzaki about the Supervision Army and hear mechanical designer Kazutaka Miyatake discuss his new personal best work.
It’s more deculture than ever before, so throw on some headphones, kickback, and enjoy.
These shots were instrumental in the making of "Phantasm".

This is the second podcast that we recorded at Super Dimension Convention in September. Instead of the usual round table format, we tried something a little different...
A table, an open mic, a very noisy dealers hall... and you.
Maybe this isn't the best idea. Maybe it's the best idea ever. Maybe it's just really really noisy. How it turns out, is up to you, the fans at the con who were generous enough with their time to sit down and talk with us. So thank you - you all know who you are. I hope.
Special thanks to Andrew Collie for spontaneously co-hosting and Revan for getting the word out and also for the photos. Thanks guys!

THE event for Macross fans outside of Japan, Super Dimension Convention was held in Torrance, California on September 15 this year and was a resounding success thanks to the tireless work of dedicated staff and fellow fans.
We sit down in the aftermath of the con to discuss how it all went. Oh, and also Redman, Penguins, and VF-X. With special guests Frank from Georgia and Dylan the cat. It's the next best thing to being there!
(On a side note, we accidentally recorded this episode with the window open. Sorry for any extra ambient noise.)

With just over a year and a half having passed since initially being greenlit, we put the question to fans and fellow podcasters - "What would you like the next Macross to be?"
This episode is all about you, the fans, and what you think the future should hold.
Special thanks to the guys over at Gundamn, the Anime Nostalgia Podcast, Warui Deshou, the Repacked Podcast, and everyone else who sent in submissions. We couldn't;t have done this show without you!

This may well be the longest, most info-packed podcast we have ever done - but it certainly wasn't planned that way!
We start off on a rather somber note this episode, as the Crew shares their thoughts on the recent passing of Unsho Ishizuka. Then it's time for a "quick" news and event catchup before discussing the Macross panel at Anime Expo 2018 that Adrian and Mike helped out at.
Waiting for the premiere of Good Job at Akihabara.
We then have a partial recording of said panel (it cut off before the end of the panel), followed by a wrap-up that was recorded immediately post-panel.
Oh, we manage to drop by Akihabara for the return of May'n and Megumi Nakajima and the debut of their first ever Music Video together! Adrian also meets a certain Macross-related artist that has actually had their work published outside of Japan. Care to guess who it could be? Tune in to find out!
All this and September hasn't even started yet!

In a word, it was MOSPEADASTIC! So many Mospeada toys and kits. And of course, we're here to talk all about it this episode. Hope you guys like your toys, because we talk about a lot of them!
First, though, we need to catch up on all the recent Macross news and announcements - and there's a lot to discuss!

Just who the hell IS Tony?
You’ve heard his voice on the podcast before, but this episode we thought we’d give him a chance to tell his Macross story.
Growing up with one foot in the US, one in Taiwan, and another in Japan, this strange 3-legged creature has a unique history with the franchise and its fandom.
We also report back from a Kazutaka Miyatake talkshow where we got to ask the designer of the SDF-1 and the Yamato about his work on Macross Delta. Oh, he also had some Gundam and Blue Submarine No.6 tales to tell too.
We were recording in a new venue with new software this episode. Hopefully the sound quality didn't suffer too much as a result but, as always, if you have any feedback, comments or suggestions, get in touch with us via Facebook or Twitter.
Miyatake was heavily inspired by Cambodia's Angkor Wat when designing the Protoculture ship Sigur Berrentz.
Just who did come up with these iconic Gundam concepts? The answer may surprise you.

It was supposed to be a quiet Sunday morning podcast but then we kinda news-jacked ourselves from the future and well... it's complicated, okay?
What's not complicated is the sheer amount of cool anime stuff that's been happening recently! We visit the Cowboy Bebop cafe, watch Macross Delta Passionate Walkure in MX4D, hear a bunch of Macross 2 songs performed live in concert, discuss Sentinel's new Mospeada Ride Armor and go to not one, but two Shoji Kawamori talkshows to hear all about the creation of Passionate Walkure and the designing of the Armored VF-31 - that's right, it's double the Kawamori this episode of the SpeakerPODcast!

Having just come out of a live Macross drawing in the heart of Asagaya Anime Street, we grabbed a table at a nearby cafeteria to drop this latest episode of the SpeakerPODcast!
Surrounded by hungry students and locals looking for the cheapest curry udon in town, we hope you'll excuse the noise (let's just call it "ambience") as we discuss seeing Macross Frontier art drawn in person before getting into our thoughts on the first trailer for what may well have been the first live action anime adaptation ever announced - Battle Angel Alita. Or, as it is now called, Alita: Battle Angel.
Adrian recounts an encounter with Batou/Domel/Solid Snake/Rider/Gato voice actor Akio Ohtsuka, Gwyn meets Leiji Matsumoto and encounters a rather unique corner of Yamato fandom, while Renato traipses around South America with Gainax co-founder Hiroaki Inoue - and yes, that IS a Macross 2 book under his arm.

While out on assignment, SpeakerPODcast co-host Save, managed to catch some audio of Les Claypool at Anime Los Angeles 2016. Listeners may remember Les from the US Renditions panel at Macross World Convention 2015. This panel covers some of the same territory, but also includes some amazing anecdotes about Akira and Macross Plus (head over to the 36:20 mark for Macross Plus). Since this is a panel recording, the audio is a little on the low side, but stick with it as the SpeakerPODcast Crew found many of Les’ anecdotes to be simply amazing, and hope that you do too.
Thanks again to Save for the audio!

Back in 1994, a script for a live action Hollywood adaptation of Macross was briefly shown during a Newtype.Shonen Ace video special, a VHS bonus for readers of Newtype & Shonen Ace magazine. While entertainment industry insiders like Harry Knowles claimed to have heard Hollywood rumours four years later in 1998, very little has ever been revealed about what was actually in the script.
Until now.
This pre-vis concept of a Zentraedi came 2 years later with the script, but shares common elements with the Zentraedi described in the initial treatment.
Doug ‘Calamori’ has uncovered an initial treatment for a possible Macross live action movie from 1992. Auto-tuned idols? A 4000 meter long Macross? Cycloptic, insect-like Zentraedi?

A few notes & corrections, courtesy of Renato: Yasui Kazumi, the famous musician who wrote DYRL and was the wife of composer Kazuhiko Kato, died not from leukemia, but from lung cancer. While Yasui Kazumi doesn’t Kato himself actually does have a Wikipedia entry, so this might be helpful: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazuhiko_Kato_%28musician%29 *Here is “Kaettekita Yopparai (I only live twice)” song that I mentioned- someone has helpfully translated the lyrics into English and included them as a comment:

Back in August, on a quiet evening, Ken ‘Valkyrie’ Brennan dropped by the Ishbar to talk about WonderFest, the history of MacrossWorld, and all things garage-kit related. Richard and Jason check in from the US to discuss Macross THE FIRST, and Adrian wakes up long enough to discuss the joys of software copyright infringement.
Due to some major technical difficulties, this episode of SpeakerPODcast very nearly became our first unreleased episode. As it is there is still a lot of background noise (still trying to work out where it was coming from!), but hopefully we managed to clean the audio up enough to make it listenable.

Oh yeah, we also meet some guy called Shoji Kawamori.
There have been a few changes made to the podcast format this time around. For starters, we’ve dropped the ‘what we’ve been watching’ segment in order to focus more on Macross-related stuff. Since we also went more than a little overtime, theres no Macross Fan Voxpop this episode.
And what did we learn from all this? Well, for starters, its not a very good idea to record a group of people while theres a box of jellybeans on the table. Also, what is seen at Comiket cannot be unseen, no-matter how hard you try.

With the final (that we know of) 30th Anniversary events drawing to a close, we decided to try something special this episode by renting/recording in the special Firebomber-themed karaoke room at Ikebukuro Joysound.
As such, the sound is little different than usual, but hey, what better ambience for a Macross podcast than rooms full of people singing Firebomber and Frontier songs in the background while we discuss our impressions of The MUSICALTURE, the FB7 movie, Firebomber live in concert, the VF-4G, Macross 30, and the fateful day when Renato, Gubaba, Yoshiki Fukuyama and a bag full of Orgus VHS tapes collided….literally!
Also, this episode features another Macross Voxpop, as well as the debut of Antibiotictab!

The gang is back together with special guests Matt Alt and Patrick Galbraith for a drunken cacophony of sushi shirts, the moepocalypse, Renato’s Grandmother and the truth about Matt’s relationship with Lord Graham.
Oh and there’s something about Macross 7 and Frontier in there too. Sorta. I think.
The chaos simply couldn’t be contained, so I ended up splitting the cast in two:

It's been a few months since we last checked in, but Macross waits for no-one! In this episode, we discuss the HAPPY NYAN YEAR FESTIVAL in Yokohama, Chie Kajiura's inaugural MYLENE NIGHT, and special guest TIM ELDRED drops by to discuss his history with Macross and comics. So sit back, pump the volume up, and remember, as Save says, ‘Who cares? Aya Endo!’

This is the first episode of SpeakerPODcast we attempted to record. It was done on the weekend after Wings of Farewell hit cinemas in Japan. This was long before any sort of English translations were available so we discuss general opinions about the film at the time, as well as report on the various events that were happening in Japan to commemorate both its opening and the final end of the Macross Frontier rollercoaster that had been going strong for the past 3 years.
Please keep in mind that there were several technical issues and the acoustics were far from great (this is something we have improved in subsequent episodes).
I hope you have as much fun listen to it as we had recording it.

Hey there Out-Cast listeners! The podcast you are about to listen to was edited on a plane. Unfortunately, as a result, we don’t have any music, but . . . on A PLANE!
Feel free to take a moment to dwell upon just how awesome that is. A plane. That’s possibly even more awesome than editing something on a boat. And speaking of boats, there’s quite a bit of boat discussion to be had this episode, along with some chat about a tiny little event that seems to have almost slipped by us unnoticed . . . TGS 2011. So here it is at long last. The Out-Cast’s TGS 2011 Special. Enjoy it however you can. Preferably on a boat. Or even A PLANE!

Well, our next podcast episode is fully complete, ready to upload, and locked in a room that none of us have the key to... So you guys get a mailbag special instead! This time it's just me and Kyle so get ready for the Out-Cast as you've never heard it before-- without Gwyn keeping us on track!
Mailbag Special #2!
Do you think that Matsuno's return to Square for Tactics Ogre will be permanent and will games like Vagrant Story 2 will be made? How are the SD upscales on JP blu-rays? Should small developers go portable only, and leave the big HD games for Square and Capcom? What in the hell is wrong with Japanese TV? What do you guys think of the new Devil May Cry reboot? Is it possible that Halo 4 is a handheld game? Will Nintendo push the 3DS as their lead system? Has the success of Monster Hunter in Japan had a bigger impact than it seems world wide ? What is this I hear about arcade games in Japan having member cards that track your wins/losses and unlockables? (And more arcade related questions!) What did each of you think of Parasite Eve 1 and 2? Did any of you manage to check out Tales of Graces f for the PS3? At which price does the PSP2 need to enter the market to have the slightest chance of outselling the 3DS? What do you know about the pet interaction system in the Last Guardian? How often do you 3 meet outside the podcast and what are your main activities? What was the mysterious game Richard played? Why would a company allow people to play their game but not allow them to tell anyone about it? Is Child of Eden really that good? Is there a PS3 version of Child of Eden with the PSMOVE? Richard, did you really buy a 360 without the Kinect bundle? Is Japan a nice place to live in general? What was the most striking difference between America and Japan? Other than all the different types of writing is Japanese an incredibly hard language? If you had to play ONE game for eternity, cant be before the PS1 and N64 days, what game would it be?

What on earth is the Out-Cast? Well, this was a series of podcasts I did back in 2010~2012 on videogames and videogame culture in Japan for an old website with a completely different crew. I'm republishing them here on DecultureShock, but for anyone who is interested, the original website can be found here.
