ustice Kemmerer was honored as Junior Firefighter of the Year during Monday night’s DuBois City Council meeting.The award was started in honor of Melanie Weaver, an influential member of the DuBois Volunteer Fire Department who passed away in November. Weaver also worked as a medic with local ambulance services and was a fire training officer in DuBois.The recipient of the Melanie Weaver Junior Firefighter of the Year “has exceeded requirements both scholastically and to the DuBois Volunteer Fire Department.”Kemmerer is a girl junior firefighter with Fourth Ward Hose Company.

Aviana Gillaugh is a part of the Turn about Boxing Group and she help teach Knockout Parkinson's Symptoms at Christ the King Manor every Wednesday the program is non-contact boxing, warm up stretching, balance and mobility, strength, cardio, agility and so much more. This boxing program satisfies all exercise criteria, is community based, and provides a very social, vigorous, and sustainable source of long term exercise. This young lady is a Coach and Fighter for Team 814, the founder of Turnabout Boxing and its Parkinson's/movement impairment disorder program(s), an honor student, and so much more. Abby Freemer is participating in Penn State DuBois’ THON Hair Auction and plans to cut up to 6 inches off of her hair at $300 per inch. If you aren’t sure what THON is, it’s Penn State’s student-run philanthropic organization that raises money for the Four Diamonds fund for pediatric cancer research. The Hair Auction will take place on Wednesday, February 8th at Penn State DuBois as part of the dancer send-off spaghetti dinner. Dancers will dance a week and a half later (no sitting, no standing) for 46 hours. PA Thespian Conference: Julia Wirths, Michaela Albers, and Leah McFadden wrote a one-act play, My Hands Are Tied, that we presented to over 800 students from around the state. Julia Wirths and Michaela Albers directed that play for which Gage Pardee was named to the All-star cast. Julia WIrths was named Most Valuable Thespian. Avah is 12 and looking for a way to make extra money for the Christmas season. Rather than stare into the abyss and wallow in self pity she has decided she would like to bring Christmas excitement to young kids around the area. She is asking $20 per visit ($25 if you would like her to leave behind Grinch dust for your children). She will spend 5-7 minutes creeping around the outside of your home while your kids watch with excitement. She will creep around and peek in windows, from behind trees and bushes and can also pretend to steal your Christmas pantookas, dafflers, and wuzzles (don't worry, they will be placed neatly on the side of your house). She plans to even leave a Grinchy gift behind! For her safety she will not enter any homes. Everything will be done outside. If you would like pictures with the Grinch, that is great. But keep in mind they will need to be taken outside and she will not be able to communicate by voice. Instead she will find other creative ways to interact with your children. If you would like to share pictures of your interaction with the Grinch please use the hashtag #GrinchedbyAvah . She would love to see the pictures you have taken 💚 She plans to Grinch around every Saturday and Sunday from 3-5 up until Christmas. Schedule is flexible to an extent. She can visit the Clearfield, Woodland, Curwensville, and Grampian areas. Please be kind and know that this is her first year doing this! If all goes well she plans to continue doing this in future years.Thank you all so much for supporting Avah through this Grinching season. She spent $420 dollars of her earnings on toys for kids in the Community!

This year our high school students led our DCS Operation Christmas Child shoebox packing party, and we were able to send off 108 shoeboxes to children all over the globe! Our elementary students here at DCS were all guided by our high school students through selecting what items to pack in a shoebox, praying for their shoebox recipient, and taking their class photos. It was a wonderful day for all the students and staff to work together to bless other young children around the world with the message of Jesus Christ. Something as simple as a few gifts in a shoebox in the hands of a child who may have never before received a gift can be a great segway for a gospel presentation.

Hayden Bell was nominated for Kids in The Community because she is always one of the first kids to rush in and help with any situation. Hayden helped her Girl Scout Leader prepare for meetings and crafts. Hayden would always give her own time to help friends and other scouts. She is always attentive to anyone that may need a friend, and always running to comfort tears. Hayden is a model of good behavior and always a positive attitude.She is a positive force in our community. She is spreading kindness to other children daily. She makes a huge impact on those around her at school, Girl Scouts, softball, etc. She will always make sure everyone is included and has a friend. That has such a large impact on kids in social settings. Everyone deserves a friend and to not stand alone if they wish not too.

The visionary/founder of the organization is Aviana Gillaugh (pictured above), who at the time of inception she was a 14-year-old student and female boxer
This organization, and its purpose, is the realization and physical representation of her heart and soul, combined with the passion she has for the sport of boxing and what it represents to her. Aviana’s vision serves as the lens of the organization, and the guiding force driving its mission. Aviana wanted to create an organization to promote boxing and utilize it as a mentoring tool to effect positive change in individuals, the overall community, and the whole of society.

According to Scouts BSA, the rank of Eagle Scout requires a Scout to earn minimum of 21 merit badges, show leadership skills, and plan an Eagle Project. This needs to be done before the Scout turns 18.
For Angelo, the Eagle Project was giving back to a park that had given a lot to him growing up. Angelo cleaned up and stained the pavilion, added a bench, and replaced the teeter-totter boards.
Angelo is starting his senior year at DuBois Central Catholic. Angelo and his brother, JD, did this project together.

A local boy and his mother spend each Veterans Day traveling around the area to give veterans a token of their appreciation for their service.
Melissa Strong and her son, Levi, of DuBois, still had many stops left when they attended the Veterans Day ceremony in Reynoldsville Wednesday morning. She and Levi had a bag of United States pins that they had individually bagged with a photo that Strong had taken at an air show.
Gage Fleeger, Marlee Wood and other members of Lock Haven University Nursing Honor Society raised money to purchase items to fill Jared Boxes for the children and adolescent patients for the benefit of Penn Highlands DuBois Behavioral Health Hospital.

Members of National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) have been busy creating Pura Vida style bracelets as a fundraiser to support Ukrainian children. With the guidance of their advisor, Mrs. Sarah Peterson, the NJHS students set up shop in the PAHS Library & Makerspace where they designed and created the bracelets. Each one is hand-made and represents US support of Ukraine using a combination of red, white, & blue, and yellow & blue string.
NJHS sold them from Monday, April 4, 2022 until Friday, April 22. All proceeds will go to the Save the Children charity which will provide aide to Ukrainian children. The total amount raised was $1,571.

The 6th grade team presented a mini Spring Fair on Thursday, April 14 to raise money to aid the children of the Ukraine. Booths available such as an egg hunt, face painting, football throw, guessing jars, pet rocks, Lego towers, corn hole, bingo, relay races, bottle flip and Tic-tac-toe.
They raised a total of $4,065.00

For Easter she invited Brockway families to an Easter Family Fun Event at the Brockway Presbyterian Church on April 8 at 5 p.m. They provided egg coloring, Easter egg hunts, raffles and crafts. Project Grace provided pizza, drinks and snacks as well as a book for the children who attended. Children also enjoyed the movie “Zootopia” at the event.
Easter baskets, books and pizza made Easter in Brockway this year thanks to Project Grace.

One of Ms. Hackett's classes at the DuBois Area High School had won the Vocabulary.com vocabulary bowl one-day challenge. They had to use the app to review and learn new vocabulary words.
They do this all year, but this was a special one-day challenge that the app sponsored. Ms. Hackett's class of 8 students mastered 530 new words on March 10th.Overall, the DuBois Area High School came in first place in the world for this challenge.
Alexis Pontzer her original poem "Sweet Dreams" has been selected for publication in Appelly Publishing's 2022 Rising Stars Collection. Anticipation is rising for the release of the 2022 Rising Stars Collection, which will showcase the work of many talented young authors from across the United States.

DuBois, PA – One person was reportedly killed in a shooting in DuBois Thursday afternoon, and the suspect is in custody.
Official details remain limited, but the victim has been named by the Clearfield County Coroner as 46-year-old Jude Srock on DuBois.
DuBois City Police Chief Blaine Clark announced the name of the alleged suspect, 60-year-old Glen Johnston of DuBois, who is in custody at the Clearfield County Jail.
It happened in a parking lot on South Franklin Street near West Long Avenue in DuBois around 4:15 Thursday.
Officers arrived within two minutes and found a 46-year-old man on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head. Information was gathered on scene. Officers from the City Police, Sandy Township Police, PA State Police, Penn State Police, Lawrence Township Police, Clearfield Borough Police and Curwensville Borough Police set up a perimeter to locate the alleged suspect.
The suspect, 60-year-old Glen Johnston, was located near Stanley Road, a traffic stop was performed by the PA State Police, and the subject was taken into custody without incident.
Police say at no time was the community in danger.
Chief Clark did not give an exact motive for the shooting, but said that it was “domestic”. He says it was not drug-related or an active shooting situation.
Police would like to thank the entire community for their assistance, donations and prayers.

The local Marine Corps League and the Military order of the Purple Heart and the DuBois Area High School teamed up for a clothing drive to support local veterans.
Throughout both Clearfield and Jefferson Counties, many veterans from our community and surrounding areas are currently patients in various nursing homes, homeless, or have fallen on difficult times. These men and women are in need of basic clothing such as socks, undershirts, underwear, sweatpants, and sweatshirts. Therefore, the Marine Corps League, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the DuBois Area High School teamed up for a community service project to honor our local veterans.

Julia Wirths, a Junior at DAHS, has won the regional level of Poetry Out Loud for the third consecutive year. She will advance to the state level which will be virtual due to COVID.
Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition for high school students across the country. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.
In a typically red county, several blue candidates made an appearance at a Democratic petition signing event in Clearfield on Friday. Current Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman was there, campaigning as he runs for US Senate.
Brockway Borough spent the last of the first disbursement of the American Rescue Fund money in the borough by helping the Brockway Kaimanns with a project. Council President Chris “Smoke” Benson said that this donation fully exhausts the American Rescue Fund money. Another round is expected in June.

Hope Squad members are trained to be aware of their peers and watch for warning signs. They learn to show empathy to their peers, listen without judgment, and reduce stigma regarding help-seeking and mental illness.

Cameron Pennington is participated in Penn State DuBois’ Thon Hair Auction and plan to cut 10 inches off of his hair and donate it to Wigs for Kids or another similar place. If you aren’t sure what Thon is, it’s Penn State’s student-run philanthropic organization that raises money for the Four Diamonds fund for pediatric cancer research. The Hair Auction took place on Wednesday, February 9th at Penn State DuBois as part of the dancer send-off spaghetti dinner. Dancers will dance a week and a half later (no sitting, no standing) for 46 hours. Cameron raised a total of $3000 to cut off his hair. The total raised by this event was over $12,000.
A new program coming to our local DuBois Middle School that could quite literally save lives... It's called Hope Squad, empowering kids to talk to each other and identify the signs that someone is considering suicide, and teaching them to speak up when they know someone needs some help.

Skills USA group of young students at the Clearfield County Career and Technology Center in Clearfield. These young people helped the non-profit charity, REST Inc
REST exists to support informal kinship families, like grandparents raising grandchildren. The teens involved in this outreach are as follows: Savannah Anderson (President), Karly Framer, Chloe Rowles, Will Rainey, Raven Myers, Lydia Swatsworth and Makenzie Hullihen.
Led by Advisor Mick Jerome, these young leaders went before the Clearfield County Commissioners to advocate for kinship families, educate the community about the strengths and challenges these families face, and bring general awareness to an important issue. Additionally, they secured space at the CCCTC to hold the First Annual REST Kinship Family Christmas party, planned and prepared the food, and participated as “Santa’s Helpers” for nearly 100 kinship family members.
Now, this group is working to hold a Volleyball Tournament fundraiser for REST in order to meet the needs of kinship families across the county.

In our 2021 Make-A-Wish week in DuBois, we had some incredible donations from clubs! The Polish Club and the Independent Political and Social Club each brought in $4,400, which means they each provided the average cost of a wish for a child. The Sandy Club brought in two full wishes at $8,800 raised. And the Olympic Athletic Club brought in a whopping $25,000 this year.

The Brockway School Board honored solicitor R. Edward Ferraro for 60 years of service. Ferraro was hired as the solicitor on December 4, 1961, by the then-joint school board of multiple school districts which eventually consolidated into the Brockway Area School District. Former board member Robert Cherubini presented Ferraro with the text of the original Brockway Record story about Ferraro’s hiring. The board also found the minutes of that meeting, showing that Ferraro’s father made the motion to hire him.

Cam Gump has a dream to be an artist someday. He recently won 1st place at the Sunny 106 Kids in Business event at the DuBois Mall. He runs a booth called Comic Book Inc. where he sells these cool superhero themed bookmarks and other comic oriented goodies.
His Mom Nicole Dawn reached out to FCCF to see if they would put some of the bookmarks in their Imagination Boxes. They said that they would, but they would need 300 of them. Cam accepted the challenge and hand delivered 300 custom superhero bookmarks to FCCF!
He also donated all his proceeds from his Comic Book Inc. stand to First Class Children's Foundation to help other kids get Imagination Boxes.

She has also volunteered at many churches, the souper bowl, nursing homes, DuBois Little League and Penn Highlands Healthcare. She was employed at Falls Creek Sheetz and Treasure Lake. In her free time she enjoys spending time with family and friends, taking pictures, and going on hikes.
This fall Emma will be attending Saint Vincent College to major in Environmental Science.

She personally donated 11 inches of hair. Ava says she has been inspired to donate her hair and has wanted to do it since she was very young. She says she'll try to do it again once her hair grows longer again!

Trent started his small business with Kids in Business in 2018. He calls it Trents Bee-lious. He is now 14 years old and is booked solid at fairs, Craft and vendor shows all over and almost every weekend.
His next event is on Saturday, September 25th for Relay for Life Car Cruise in.
He is saving up for a food truck so he can go more places. He enjoys working for himself and hopes someday he can get the right guidance in becoming a young entrepreneur.

Ryan and Lucas Gramling of Philipsburg stopped by CenClear with their mom, Kris Wehrer, to donate some birthday cake kits that they had created. Instead of celebrating in the traditional fashion, twins Lucas and Ryan celebrated their 11th birthdays June 22, 2021 by creating 11 birthday cake kits. The kits can be provided to families in need in the CenClear preschool program to celebrate their children’s birthdays.

Chloe Neal is the Clearfield County Fair Queen. Chloe is 17 years old and a senior at DuBois Area High School.
She’s involved in multiple sports and extracurricular activities at DAHS. She is also a volunteer firefighter and an EMT. Chloe enjoys reading, writing, and traveling. Chloe is the current Clearfield County Fair Queen where she hopes to learn and grow more in her agriculture knowledge and share that knowledge with the community.
In the future, Chloe hopes to become an intrauterine and pediatric surgeon. She plans to attend John Hopkins University after graduating high school, duel-majoring in biology and psychology.

The 1st Street Lemonade Kids raised money to buy school supplies for their fellow classmates… that’s kids helping kids! They started the lemonade stand and wanted to be part of collecting even more donations.
Many people stopped by a local lemonade stand and all proceeds will go towards "Stuff an Ambulance" for Amserv/Dusan with school supplies event.
They raised $118 and bought needed supplies for local kids.

Sarah Swope is a 2021 graduate of DuBois Area High School. Sarah is currently serving as the 2020 Clearfield County Fair Queen. In this role she has volunteered extensively in our community at many different local events like helping with pumpkin painting at Octoberfest in DuBois. She helps in fundraising efforts for the Children’s Miracle Network and advocates for the Clearfield County Fair and the Pennsylvania Agriculture Industry. She was named a top five finalist at the Pennsylvania Fair Queen Competition in January. Sarah is also involved in our local 4H, serving as President of the Clearfield County 4H Teen Council as well as being a member of the Clearfield County Beef Club. She is an extremely active member and role model to younger 4H members.
At the 2021 Clearfield County Fair, she will be showing her three lambs. All will be sold at the Fair’s Youth Livestock Auction and the proceeds of one will benefit the 4H and FFA scholarship fund as well as local charities. Sarah is a freshman at Penn State University where she is majoring in the Sciences.
Each year, the Clearfield County Fair Queen raises a lamb, which is sold to benefit Children's Miracle Network and the 4H and FFA Scholarship Fund. My Lamb, named Curly, will be sold at the 4H and FFA Junior Livestock Sale at 9:30 am on August 7th at the Clearfield County Fairgrounds Livestock Arena.

During her years at DAHS she has dedicated her time to National Honor Society, Student Council, Beaver Buddies, Special Olympics, Breakfast with Santa, DuBois Little League, Hahne Cancer Center, Grady’s Decision, Rotary Club of DuBois, The American Red Cross, and The Salvation Army. Taylor has been an “A” honor roll student and has lettered 3 years in softball, basketball, and volleyball. She was the President of the Interact Club and was named Captain of the softball, basketball, and volleyball teams. She currently holds two part-time jobs at the DuBois Dutch Pantry and Sarah’s Soft Serve and Food. Taylor will be attending Slippery Rock University this fall majoring in Secondary Education and plans to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics.

After a deadly shooting over the holiday weekend in Philadelphia, some lawmakers say it's a sign for that our state needs to be more focused on preventing gun violence.
On July 4th, about 90 to 100 shots were fired into a crowd gathered outside a streetwear store in Philadelphia hosting a neighborhood cookout to celebrate its one-year anniversary. One of the two men killed was a first cousin to state Sen. Sharif Street's wife, April.
The council spent a large amount of its meeting discussing the intersection along Routes 219 and 28. PennDOT has found the money to complete the estimated $3 million project. A concerned business owner approached the council, asking them to support his request to have some access from Main Street to his parking lot. Council President Chris "Smoke" Benson said that the council did present that option to PennDOT and the access to the parking lots will be up to the engineers.

During their years at DAHS, both boys participated in marching band (Jake on drumline and Jordan on tenor sax), concert band, choir, select choir, and theater. The twins are both employed at Martins. They have volunteered at First Class Children’s Foundation events since the organization began. Jake plans to attend college to earn a degree in teaching. Jordan plans to attend college to earn a degree in business administration.

Lakin was a member of student council and the National Honor Society. She has also had the honor of being the 2020 Homecoming Queen. She is employed by Fox's Pizza. In her free time, she likes to spend time with her friends and family. This fall, Lakin is attending Penn State University to major in Industrial Engineering.

He an another classmate had organized a Hat Day. In which the students and teachers could pay a dollar to wear a hat to wear a hat and all the money raised would be donated to the family. They raised $800.

Abigail Guiher is a senior at the DuBois Area High School. While at DAHS, she participated in National Honor Society, Student Council, and Girls’ Varsity Basketball.

May 25, 2021: Superintendent Jeff Vizza wrapped up the meeting by thanking the whole community for its role in keeping the school open for much of the year. Vizza had a t-shirt with several puzzle pieces printed on it, which he called the “Team Puzzle,” and each piece represented stakeholders in the district. He referenced the shirt while he thanked the community, teachers, administrators, staff, students, and more who worked to keep the school running.
The DAHS Rotary Interact Group had participated in 2021 Sidewalk Chalk Walk. The showed their appreciation and honored our community with decorative chalk work. They tried to reach all local/state police, fire stations, EMS, hospitals, the VS clinic, outpatient clinics, nursing facilities, a few covid clinics, all schools in the district and then also thru out the downtown area. They rocked it! "Serve before Self".

The goal this year is to provide every student at Juniata Elementary with their own Imagination Box, a personalized box with books, school and art supplies, games, and snacks. FCCF is also working on raising money to provide a book vending machine for CG Johnson Elementary, in which kids could use "caught being good tokens" to "purchase" new children's books as a prize.

Brockway School Board Member Robert Cherubini expressed his condolences to the families of Brockway community members who recently passed away, former staff members Dixie Murray and John Bernardo. Dixie was a speech therapist who also worked with the band front. John was a physical education and health teacher.
Caleb McCartney had done his Eagle Scout Project for the Furniture Bank that is located in DuBois. This project will improve the Furniture Bank significantly by adding more color to the area and making it feel more like a place than a warehouse.

Business Owner Ron Matson came to the meeting to talk about the intersection project by Sheetz. Matson said that PennDOT told him that the estimate came in at over $3 million, which is $1 million more than the grant for the project. Brockway Council president Chris "Smoke" Benson said that the goal is to keep the $2 million in Brockway, and he is trying to get a meeting set up to discuss the estimates.

A recent data breach exposing the data of over 70,000 Pennsylvanians was the topic of discussion at a recent press conference held in Harrisburg. Lawmakers, led by State Rep. Jason Ortitay (R- Washington, Allegheny) called for an investigation seeking further information about how a company which was given a no-bid contract by the Wolf administration failed to protect the personal data of tens of thousands of Commonwealth residents.

Friendship firefighters were out earlier this spring for the annual church wash downs at St. Catherine's and St. Michael's Catholic churches. Some future members also helped and had an opportunity to flow some water under the supervision of current Friendship members (their dads). It was an opportunity for some pump practice for drivers as well.

Sandy Township has approved a new emergency response system program, meant to connect EMS and fire departments so they can all be in the loop about what emergencies are happening and who all will be helping at the scene. It's called the IamResponding program, which uses text and emails to alert crews and collect info about how many people are on their way to the emergency.

Celebrate the arrival of warmer weather and help clean up the DuBois area! Although many teams have already committed to doing cleanup projects, they’re still looking for many volunteers to help out on April 24.
You can volunteer to do anything, big or little, that will help freshen up DuBois again on Earth Day weekend.
That includes litter pick-up, sweeping gravel and other debris from sidewalks and parking lots, washing dusty or dirty windows and fixtures, making small repairs, or repainting things that have become chipped.
You can commit to cleaning many areas around DuBois, like your own street, the Downtown area, the DuBois City Park, or any place that you think could look better with a little elbow grease.
Spring is the perfect time to clean up and make everything fresh again.
Annual Spring Clean Up Day is Saturday, April 24. Sign up as an individual, group, office, business or family.

“Ty the Quarter Guy” who has been collecting quarters every year since he was 3 or 4, now 16, and donates during Punxsy’s LUACL campaign- this past December he had a donation of over $4500. Ty started when he was three years old.

Kendra Mitchell, first grade student at DuBois Central Catholic surprised her family when her mom and dad asked what she and her brother, Austin were going to give up for Lent. Last year, Mrs. Mitchell said, “Kendra gave up Sprite. This year, Kendra announced, “I am not giving up anything. I am going to DO something.” During one of Kendra’s classes with Mrs. Jenny Pisarcik, Mrs. Pisarcik explained to the children that you do not always have to ‘give up’ something for Lent, you could ‘do’ something instead.
When asked what she was going to do, Kendra stated she was going to collect food for their elderly neighbor and others at Christ The King Manor, DuBois. In support of their daughter’s endeavor, Mrs. Mitchell placed information on Facebook and Kendra placed a box outside of their home with a sign she made, ‘LENT DONATIONS. . . Thank You! Kendra’. Kendra was so excited when one day she went to her box and found another box, large in size and filled with items from Sam’s Club.
Kendra has collected items donated by her family, the community and her church family. When asked what kinds of items she has collected, Kendra stated, “We have all kinds of stuff that I can’t even name it all.” She went on to say, ‘We are making the bags at the firehall because there is a lot of room!’ Mrs. Mitchell says there are enough items to fill a minimum of 50 bags for seniors. The bags will include everything from food, to entertainment and personal items.

Our club decided that since we had leftover funds from the previous year, we didn't need to do a fundraiser for ourselves. So, we decided to do one for charity. Two of our officers previously raised a lot of money through selling Krispy Kreme Donuts, so we decided to do that as our fundraiser. We believed we would make the most profit with this company. We sold them for two weeks during November. They were supposed to be delivered and distributed in December; however, sports and activities were shut down for two weeks, so our dates got postponed. We were finally able to distribute the donuts at the beginning of January. We ended up having extras so we donated those to essential workers. We raised over $1,000 for Make-A-Wish and donated the money shortly after the donuts were delivered.

Ethan graduates from DuBois Area High School this year and has been accepted to the United States Naval Academy.

Jonah Averill is working on his Eagle Scout project. His project is a Flag retirement box for the Reynoldsville Veterans Park. This box will be used to put old worn United States flags in and then they will do the proper ceremony to burn the flags.
So far Jonah has raised over $1000 towards his project. He has been selling small American flags at different functions to help with the costs.
Jonah current has raised enough money to purchase the drop box and other items/ skills have been donated. He currently still needs to find someone to airbrush the box or wrap the box. He will need to fund raise for the cost or one of those to finish the box. Jonah is planning on selling flags at the Bellamauro on April 11 during the Reynoldsville Cub Scout Spaghetti fundraiser dinner between 11-?

In a challenging time filled with virtual events, the Penn State DuBois Hair Auction to benefit THON still ended the night with $7,615 raised to support children battling cancer. This puts the overall campus goal to support THON 2021 at $19,441.77.
Each year, student activists at Penn State DuBois work tirelessly to support the efforts of THON, Penn State's Dance Marathon, that raises millions of dollars toward the fight against pediatric cancer. The Hair Auction is the biggest fundraiser of every THON season.

Although originally Penn Highlands Healthcare was offering COVID-19 vaccines to just people ages 75 and older due to limited supply, they will begin offering vaccine scheduling to everyone who falls in the Phase 1A category starting next week, Feb. 22, 2021.
Sarah Swope attends DuBois Area High School where she serves as Vice President of the school’s National Honor Society, is a member of the school’s Book Club, Quiz Bowl and Poetry Out Loud competition and serves as a youth mentor at Wasson Elementary School. Sarah was also voted the 2020 Clearfield County Fair Queen.
Even though she haven't been able to participate in many of the events she would have in a normal year, the things that she has been able to do have allowed to meet many amazing people.
She's met many talented little artists when she helped with the kids paint pumpkins at DuBois Octoberfest to the agricultural and community leaders she met at the Clearfield County Farm Bureaus annual meeting and ice cream social, her title has given her plenty of opportunities to meet the talented and caring people that make Clearfield County strong!
The Brockway Area School District vaccinated staff members Friday afternoon.
Brockway was able to give the first shot to 128 employees, including administrators, aides, bus drivers, and teachers.
Superintendent Jeff Vizza was thankful for the help from Penn Highlands Healthcare.
Staff members who were vaccinated fell into the Phase 1A of Pennsylvania's vaccine plan.
The staff members will receive their second COVID-19 vaccine shot on March 12.
Brockway High School as of Feb, 9, 2021, is currently operating remotely due to the number of COVID-19 cases in the district. The school is still in session, but students are attending online classes while the teachers report to the building. The elementary school is operating as normal.

Summer Anderson talks about the upcoming 2021 Randy Carlson memorial Hockey Tournament, benefiting a cancer-related cause each year. Although the tournament isn't until May, they are currently looking for applications for cancer-related causes to have as their beneficiary this year.
Aaron Gankosky spearheaded a project because he felt the fire department in Brockway's sign along Main Street needed a little extra company. Gankosky started work on the project just before the country shut down for the coronavirus pandemic. That shutdown delayed the project’s completion, and it added new challenges.

The Brockway Borough Council adopted a resolution to help guide public gatherings and demonstrations in the borough.
The new resolution aims to help the borough plan for events like demonstrations and rallies while still protecting the rights of its citizens. People wishing to hold a rally must contact the borough office during regular business hours ahead of an event. The borough is asking that the contact happens at least five days before the event.
Solicitor Ross Ferraro explained that the resolution will help keep the borough prepared, but the community still has the right to assemble.
A new program coming to our local DuBois Middle School that could quite literally save lives... It's called Hope Squad, empowering kids to talk to each other and identify the signs that someone is considering suicide, and teaching them to speak up when they know someone needs some help.

Senator Jay Costa, serving Allegheny County, says Gov. Wolf's proposed budget has steps in the right direction, including more school funding and higher wages for the lowest earners.
Senator Cris Dush, serving our area, gave his thoughts after watching Gov. Tom Wolf's budget address. He says, firstly, he does not agree with how the address was given virtually without giving a chance for the House and Senate to discuss together, calling it a "performance".
Senator Dush also acknowledges that many business owners will fall into the category of making $85,000 or more, meaning they will not get tax cuts and will in fact see a 46 percent increase for personal income taxes if they are considered high earners. Dush says a tax increase of that much would destroy small businesses at a time when they are already struggling.
Shea McKinney of Penfield, a 4 year cancer survivor at just 11 years old recently donated 12 inches of her hair to help children like herself. Her mother, Misty McKinney, said in December, Shea made the decision to cut her hair and donate it to "wigs for kids" making a wig for a little girl like her who lost her her. She chose Wigs for kids because they don't charge the recipient anything for their hair, which made Shea very happy.

Elliot Gelfand, a DuBois native who has been a practicing attorney in Pennsylvania for the past ten years, has announced his candidacy for the DuBois area district justice seat, left vacant with retirement of Judge Pat Ford since October.
Gelfand says he feels he's a well qualified candidate because, although you do not necessarily have to be an attorney to run for judge, it certainly helps to know the background of the court system.
If elected, Gelfand says he'd like to have a seamless working relationship with law enforcement, work alongside the District Attorney Ryan Sayers of Clearfield County to establish a drug court, make things work more smoothly between the four district courts in our area, and also re-establish Teen Court to help with young offenders.
Gelfand intends to cross-file on both the Republican and Democratic tickets for the primary municipal election, which is scheduled for May 18.

A Punxsutawney man who was originally accused of and arrested for allegedly stealing from an elderly woman has now been found innocent and all charges have been dropped.
33-year-old Jay Alexander Philliber had been acting as the power of attorney for 72-year-old Joannne M. Garrett of Punxsutawney.
He had been accused by her son of stealing $350,000 in both cash and merchandise from the woman.
However, according to Philliber's lawyer, Blair Hindman from Clarion, the district attorney found that Philliber was using the money as the woman had instructed and had been quote “like a son to her.”
Although a large amount of her money had been spent by Philliber, Garrett was wealth. Hindman says he had asked Philliber to use the money to do things like take her out for dinner and go on vacations with her.
Hindman says it's unfortunate that it took more than a year to clear the charges and make things right again. In the meantime, he says Philliber's reputation has been damaged and his life forever changed by the accusations.
They deserve to be recognized because of all the joy they have brought us neighbors since the pandemic started. In April they drew a chalk bear hunt for families taking walks around the neighborhood. They also made up Easter treats and left them at doors to make people smile. These little girls are always so friendly and giving. They are always offering to help anyone. Most recently we all (at least 20 of us) found an ornament made by these girls at our doorsteps with a note that they just wanted to spread holiday cheer. They sure do.

The Brockway borough is getting some stoplight maintenance soon. The light on Routes 219 and 28 went on the blink recently, and when the borough looked into the problem, they found that the light needed maintenance. It had minimal work done on it over the past five years.
Council President Chris "Smoke" Benson said that the borough found a balance for the maintenance that will keep the light working until the eventual intersection project in the area begins.

Melissa Strong and her son, Levi, of DuBois, still had many stops left when they attended the Veterans Day ceremony in Reynoldsville Wednesday morning. She and Levi had a bag of United States pins that they had individually bagged with a photo that Strong had taken at an air show.
“This is our fifth year,” Strong said. “I take the photos, I pick a new one each year. We put a magnet on the back of them and a label expressing our gratitude and appreciation for our veterans.”

Clearfield's CCCTC building (the Clearfield County Career and Technology Center) is one of the extra "pop-up" spots in Pennsylvania where you can be tested for COVID-19.
The testing site opened on Sunday, and up to 450 people can be tested daily at each site, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Thursday, Dec. 31.

Grace Prontock is 9 years old and serves in her community well by stocking food in the free pantry in front of the Soul Platter Cafe. Grace collected gently used children's books for her birthday this year to donate to the little free library which she stocks weekly. She was very happy to collect over one hundred books and has been distributing a few as needed in the free library.

The board signed its Attestation Ensuring Implementation of Mitigation Efforts form from the state, saying that its efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the district meets state mandates. Superintendent Jeff Vizza said the community needs to work together to keep the schools open.
If the district has four active cases in a rolling 14-day period in one of its buildings, that building will have to close for cleaning and contact tracing. If that should happen, teachers will still report to their classrooms and students will use Google Classroom to continue schoolwork.

In spite of the pandemic, Brockway continued with its new Christmas tradition of a jeep parade and tree lighting.
The event is organized by Scouts BSA Troop 40. This is the second year that Troop 40 has led the tree-lighting, but it had been involved for many years before, having previously decorated the tree. Troop 40’s April London spearheaded the event. She said that Troop 40 hopes that the community can still enjoy Christmas.

He says it's a great look into one of the developers of DuBois, who lived an incredibly interesting life.

Grace Preston lives with her parents and sisters in Brockway, PA . She has her own little business that she has run for years now and much of the proceeds from that business she donates to animal shelters and other humane organizations in memory of a beloved pet of hers named Snickers (more than $14,000 she has raised and donated over her lifetime to help animals) . Grace is a hard worker and she is very diligent in her business pursuits. She is always looking for ways to give back and has done so many times over her life.
Brockway Junior-Senior High School will have every day instruction until it goes on Thanksgiving Break on Wednesday. When school resumes on December 1, students will come on an every-other-day basis. Brockway's blended learning model has students whose names begin with A-L learning in person while M-Z is remote, and then the roles will switch the next day.
High School Co-Principal Brian Mulhollan said that this is the best option based on the numbers.

Lilly Driscoll raised more than $1000 for cats in need. Her and her mother reached out to friends and family and requested they make raffle baskets and they were posted on Lilly's live for Kitties Facebook page they sold tickets for the baskets. The money was divided between two animal based area charities--Ruth Watsmunski who fosters and homes stray cats and Hopes Dream Rescue and Sanctuary.

The new budget has no tax increase and will be voted on in the December meeting.
Councilman Armando Fortunato said the finance committee was able to quickly get to the budget without a tax increase.

These two won first place in Kids in Business 2020 with their great little business!
They decided to donate the proceeds from their bracelets to 2 charitable organizations: the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Stocking Hope! Both Dani and Katie want to do good and try to help out whenever they can. They did the Operation Smile last Valentines, creating cards and messages with their classmates and sent them with M&Ms and snicker bars to soldiers deployed in Afghanistan. During the school shut down at the height of Covid-19 pandemic, they organized a prayer rally with their class at 3pm for 3 days, to pray together for all affected families and health care and service workers.

Vizza told the board that the first marking period is almost over, and since the district wants to be in school for 180 days, the whole community needs to stay focused on implementing the district's safety plan to help keep the schools healthy.
Superintendent Jeff Vizza brought the board up to date on a survey sent out by the high school to see what the needs of the community were in the event of shut down. This lead to rumors in the school, so Vizza directly addressed them.
Lizzie and Lainey wanted to make Christmas ornaments for the Kids in Business event. They talked about what they could do with the money and they decided that giving it away seemed like a nice thing to do.
They chose Juniata Elementary’s Make-A-Wish drive because they wanted to help kids who aren’t feeling well. Half of the money raised will be sent in during their Make-A-Wish drive this December.
Their family attends Trinity United Church of Christ in Troutville and our church has been raising money for a new roof. The other half of the money will be placed in the roof jar at church.
A group of four Reynoldsville Girl Scouts worked hard through the start of the coronavirus pandemic to complete a project that earned a prestigious Bronze Award, going above and beyond their original plan.
The girls, Chloe Sawyer, Madison Ross, Payton Hiles and Eva Malmgren are members of Junior Troop 20253, and chose to work together on adding buddy benches to the playgrounds at C.G. Johnson Elementary School. When they decided on this project, they did so hoping it would help children find friends to play with and not be left out during recess.
Brockway Borough is breaking with tradition and moving its Halloween celebration from a Sunday to a Saturday.
The one-time move is because October 31 is a Saturday this year, and the borough council feels that celebrating on the day would be a welcome change.

Madee Finalle, Madison Rusnica, Ella Wilson and Lauren Hoover all worked at the DuBois Food Pantry starting the week after school shut down. They spent the first two weeks taking out shelves, and cleaning and painting two rooms. Then every Thursday they helped fill orders, take orders, direct traffic, and pack produce at the food pantry. They also worked throughout the year packing dog and cat food as needed.

Each student participating in fall sports (including band and cheerleaders) will be given four “tickets” for family members to use at each game.
Masks must be worn and social distancing must be observed.
All fall sports and events will be free to attend.
